When you are writing code or naming products, which sources of cultural references are you most likely to draw from? Which reference sources do you think are more likely to be universally understood? For example when findbugs sees that you've implemented equals() without overriding hashCode() it suggest that you implement it by returning 42 (a reference from HHGTTG) Or why we have big endian vs little endian encoding, referencing Gulliver's Travels Not that we should act unprofessionally with our code, but if you going to tell a person that they could only (watch/read/...) one (book/movie/show/...) which one would allow them to 'get' the most jokes?

Invoking play on a QTMovie causes screensaver to deactivate on Snow Leopard

I'm trying to port a working Leopard screensaver to Snow Leopard but it's deactivating after about half a second. The screensaver seems to deactivate upon invoking play on a QTMovie. And it deactivates both upon -play on the QTMovie object itself, and -play:self on the QTMovieView. If I don't actually call -play on the object, the screensaver does not deactivate and sits still on the first frame of the movie. Setting up the same code in a regular Cocoa Application works fine, and the screensaver also works fine in preview mode in the System Preferences. Any help is greatly appreciated.

OSMF - add an actionscript cuepoint to a video?

I'm trying to add a cuepoint to a video using OSMF. I built an OSMF video player, and I'd like to use this instead of the FLVPlayback component, which seems like the only way to add an actionscript cuepoint? Anyhow, I created a cuepoint by writing this: var cuePoint:CuePoint = new CuePoint(CuePointType.ACTIONSCRIPT, 1, "good point", null); videoElement.addEventListener(MediaElementEvent.METADATA_ADD, onMetadataAdd); trace(cuePoint.time); The cuepoint time traced out to "1" (successful). I simply create a movie clip, put it on the stage and give it an instance name of char. Here's my document class, simple as can be: public class Test extends MovieClip { public function Test() { char.x = 1315; char.y = 459; addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, mouseListen); } private function mouseListen(e:Event) { char.x = mouseX; char.y = mouseY; } } And I get this error: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. at com.me::Test/::mouseListen() How in the world is it possible that it knows what "char" is in the constructor but not in the mouseListen function? What else could it be?

How to make flash video show up under navigation element?

I know that the wmode needs to be either transparent or opaque for the video to show up under other elements on the page. ASP.NET Website no Response while Processing Long Process

Dear Programmers, When my Application face a long-time process, i.e fetch a query (SELECT a, b, c FROM d) This query needs 10 seconds to be completed in the MSSQL Management Studio, but when the ASP.NET application try to fetch it, it refuse to return any response to any other requests made on that Server. I am hosting my Application on VPS Server with good specifications, and I am giving this example the (SELECT a, b, c FROM d) just to tell you the issue, it can be any process, maybe processing a movie, or even fetching some data through external API that is experiencing some slow-down,or whatever. Any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Export images from flash

First of all let my clarify that I am a flash noob, this is a freelance job I am doing for someone. I have a flash files with symbols I need to export as PNG images, for some reason the exported images have different width and height than indicated in the flash file. After checking I found out that the new dimensions don't even keep the original ratio between height and width. This happens for several symbols at different sizes. What might be the reason for this? I have also considered finding a way to take a snapshot from within flash of a slice in the flash movie, is that possible? Understand that I cannot manually take the snapshots as I need this done on a very large quantity of symbols. Thank you

Why OpenGL ES texture mapping is very slow?

I have an Android application that displays VGA (640x480) frames using OpenGL ES. The application reads each frame from a movie file and updates the texture accordingly. My problem is that, it is taking almost 30 ms. to draw each frame using OpenGL. Similar test using the Canvas/drawBitmap was around 6 ms on the same device. I'm following the same OpenGL calls that VLC Media Player is using, so I'm assuming that those are optimized for this purpose. I just wanted to hear your thoughts and ideas about it?

Displaying Powerpoint slides on a web page automatically

Anyone know of any Flash components that would do the job of displaying an external PPT/PPTX file in a Flash movie on a web page? Or a way of automatically parsing uploaded Powerpoint docs from a PHP-based CMS and displaying them on a web page. Our client needs to be able to upload a Powerpoint documents on their site without any intervention (if necessary). I know about Slideshare and the like, but the content needs to live on the client's web server due to security restrictions. Also, Adobe Presenter seems to require Adobe software/plugins on the clients machine which wouldn't be ideal. Thanks in advance

Enhanced Podcasts and MPMoviePlayerViewController

Hi, This is a bit of an odd/specific one - possibly a bug? I'm using MPMoviePlayerViewController to play a variety of files, including Enhanced Podcasts - these are audio files, but with a slideshow of images, often created using GarageBand. Until (i think) iOS 3.2 they weren't supported at all, now they are and play fine in the iPod app, but in my app the slideshow doesn't start, the full screen movie player opens, and the audio begins, but all I see is the QuickTime logo. If I scrub the track the pictures appear - and will continue to play correctly - but I see nothing if I don't scrub! Any ideas?? On a related note, these files also include a small rectangluar button containing an (i) button on the right hand side - anybody know what it is or should do?! It does nothing for me!

Is there a way to catch a MOUSE_UP Event over a static textfield in Flash?

When the user presses the mouse, and releases it over a static textfield with selectable text, no MOUSE_UP event is fired - not on the stage and also nowhere else. I experienced this when using a scrollbar class on a movieclip with a nested static textfield. When the user drags the scroll handle and releases the mouse over the textfield, the dragging/scrolling is stuck. To test this, create a new AS3 fla file, place a static textfield somewhere, and put in some text. Make sure the selectable property is checked in the properties panel. Add this script to the timeline: import flash.events.* function down(event:Event):void { trace('down'); } function up(event:Event):void { trace('up'); } stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, down) stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, up) Now test the movie and click the mouse. You will notice that trace('up') will not occur when you release the mouse over the textfield.

Hey all. I'm working on an application that was originally intended for HTML, but I've recently concluded that the best thing to do for my purposes is to do it in Flash instead. One of the big things I need is to be able to bring in movieclips from external files and add them to my main movie at runtime (dynamic number of elements, skinning, etc.) Don't need full-on code for this, but I could use some assistance in tracking down the resources to learn how to do these things successfully. Tutorials, best practices… The usual suspects. I've been using Flash for a while now, and used to do this pretty easily in AS2, but I've had some hiccups using classes and addchild in an earlier attempt, so any help would be much appreciated. slowly rotate an object towards another object

I have an object that points in the direction of another object (i.e. it rotates to the direction that the second objects x and y coordinates are at) below is the code I use. var distx = target.x - x; var disty = target.y - y; var angle:Number = Math.atan2(disty, distx); var vx:Number = Math.cos(angle) * cspeed; var vy:Number = Math.sin(angle) * cspeed; rotation = angle * 180/Math.PI; x += vx; y += vy; as you can see. Not only does it rotate towards the target object, but it also moves towards it too. When I play the movie, the object instantly points to the targeted object and moves towards it. I would like for it to slowly turn towards the object instead of instantly turning towards it. anyone know how to do this.

How do I fix a font compatibilty issue from Mac to Windows, using Adobe Flash CS4?

Hi, I need to edit a Flash movie that somebody else developed in Adobe Flash CS3 on a Mac. I'm using Adobe Flash CS4 on Windows (Vista). However, the font that shows up on my computer is much bigger than on the .SWF that he produced. He used a custom font, which I had to add to my system Fonts folder. Because Adobe Flash detected the right fonts on my computer, it didn't map them to substitute fonts. I verified that Flash is indeed using the same font files that he used. I believe the fonts are being rendered differently because I'm using Windows. How do I fix this?

Read the audio input level peak in Cocoa

I'm trying to make an audio-sensitive animation, and for that purpose, I'm looking for a way to look up the current audio level. I'm looking for the peak within a set amount of time. (Think the red bar that stays on for a second or so, on an audio meter.) I've searched around for for something like this, and the only thing I could find was how to read a movie's audio levels, and how Quartz Compositions have access to this thru their iTunes Visualizer protocol. I'm looking for a way to read this from the microphone, although I'm also interested if you know how to read this from an audio file. Thanks!

I'm trying to get some information from video files and it works pretty fine with file formats like .avi, .mpg or .flv but when I try to use .3gp or .mp4 in: $movie = new ffmpeg_movie('path/to/file/test.3gp'); I get error like this : ffmpeg_movie::__construct() []: ISO: File Type Major Brand: 3gp5 or ffmpeg_movie::__construct() []: ISO: File Type Major Brand: mp42 I installed ffmpeg-php on WAMP using instructions found here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1172916/how-to-install-ffmpeg-in-wampserver-2-0-windows-xp I need those information to send them to ffmpeg using exec(). Hi, I'm a newbie to mahout.My aim is to produce recommendations on binary user purchased data.So i applied item-item similarity model in computing top N recommendations for movie lens data assuming 1-3 ratings as a 0 and 4-5 ratings as a 1.Then i tried evaluating my recommendations with the ratings in the test-data but hardly there have been two or three matches from my top 20 recommendations to the top rated items in test data and no match for most users. So are my recommendations totally bad by nature or do i need to go for a different measure for evaluating my recommendations ? Please help me ! Thanks in advance. Pranay, 2nd yr ,UG student.

I've got various flash files stored on my server. For this exmaple - here is the directory structure: Files Example - example.swf - example.xml So then on a separate webpage stored in the root of my server.. i'm embeding the flash. ... <param name="movie" value="http://www.example.com/Files/Example/example.swf"> ... Now the issue comes. Because the .swf is trying to access example.xml ... which is NOT stored in the root directory. How can I fix this problem? (I'd rather not use an iframe)
