  • My Laptop Screen keeps flickering...

    I have a lenovo g530 and the screen keeps flickering on occasion. Sometimes it is worse than others, and sometimes it doesn't seem to do it at all. I was able to capture a video of it so you could see what is happening. I kinda wanted someone else's opinion before I open it up and check the monitor cable on the board.   • Problem when waking the computer from sleep mode.

    I have a HP Pavilion dv6-2188la and when it wakes from sleep the monitor flashes (screen flickers), and every time it flashes (2 seconds) it returns me to the beginning of the password field making it almost impossible input the password. Does anyone knows what causes this problem?

    Thank you in advance for you ideas and input. I would like to periodically check to see if a third party program is currently running on a user's system from my program. I am currently launching the program as follows in C#: String plinkConString = ""; // my connection string Process plink = Process.Start(utilityPath + @"\putty.exe", plinkConString); int plinkProcessId = plink.Id; I launch the program and grab its pid in a Windows environment. As Putty/PLink may disconnect from its SSH server at some point and close, what is the best way to monitor how this process is doing in code? Is there a better way to launch this program to monitor its success or failure?

  • What to monitor on MSSQL Server

    Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!)     When opening a new monitor I am amazed that the VGA cable is always attached. Even with new high end monitors that include Display Port and DVI cables the old VGA cable is always attached while the others are just left in the box. What is the reasoning behind attaching a cable in the first place and why the VGA cable in particular?

    I hope that this one is not going to be "ask-and-answer" question... here goes: (multi)collinearity refers to extremely high correlations between predictors in the regression model. How to cure them... well, sometimes you don't need to "cure" collinearity, since it doesn't affect regression model itself, but interpretation of an effect of individual predictors. One way to spot collinearity is to put each predictor as a dependent variable, and other predictors as independent variables, determine R2, and if it's larger than .9 (or .95), we can consider predictor redundant. This is one "method"... what about other approaches? Some of them are time consuming, like excluding predictors from model and watching for b-coefficient changes - they should be noticeably different. Of course, we must always bare in mind specific context/goal of analysis... Sometimes, only remedy is to repeat a research, but right now, I'm interested in various ways of screening redundant predictors when (multi)collinearity occurs in a regression model.

  • Multi-tab application (C#)

    Hi, I'm creating a multi-tabbed .NET application that allows the user to dynamically add and remove tabs at runtime. When a new tab is added, a control is added to it (as a child), in which the contents can be edited (eg. a text box). The user can perform tasks on the currently visible text box using a toolbar/menu bar. To better explain this, look at the picture below to see an example of what I want to accomplish. It's just a mock-up, so it doesn't actually work that way, but it shows what I want to get done. Essentially, like a multi-tabbed Notepad.     Hi I am thinking about buying a DVI splitter cable online and a DVI- HDMI adapter. Can i use these to clone my monitors output so one can go to my monitor, and the other to my projector? Can anyone think of any issues with using the adapter like this? Would there be problems with signal lose or anything? Thanks

  • Is it possible to use multi keyboards with multi keyboard layouts simultaneously?

    Considering to switch to dvorak layout, but this terminal is used by multi users as the same user account. It is unacceptable to ask all people to switch layout, plus it is hard to use dvorak layout with a keyboard qwerty-ly labeled. But there are spare (USB,qwerty) keyboards, so if I plug another keyboard in and be able to use multi layouts on different psyical keyboard simultaneously (I will rearrange letters on keys), the problem get solved. solution for either windows or linux is fine. anyway thanks all.

  • multiple FileSystemWatchers to monitor files on local system?

    We're writing a text editor like tool for our internal accounting package system that has actions that can be done by our own Xml language specs. These macro commands are specified in Xml files and we need the ability to monitor if files openned have bean modified externally. The only problem is that there maybe 20-30 files with different paths openned at any one time. Would it be good to use multiple FileSystemWatchers for this scenario? Or would it be better to monitor the root drive and catch specific events that match an open file in the editor (though lots of events could be raised). Some are local drives (C,D,E) others are their network drives (U,X,G,H). Files are quite chunky too about 300-400Kb.

    I have a scenario where-in I need to create an uber jar of a multi module maven project including all modules and their dependencies. I tried using maven shade plugin. but it seems to work only when I use it at the module level. If I add the plugin entry in parent pom then the build breaks (it tries to shade the parent pom) [INFO] Replacing original artifact with shaded artifact. [INFO] Replacing null with C:\Projects\foo.bar\target\foobar-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT-shaded.pom [INFO] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [ERROR] BUILD ERROR [INFO] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [INFO] Error creating shaded jar: null It does seem to make sense since the <packaging> for the parent maven project is pom. But there should be some way to create an uber jar for a multi module project... Any ideas people???

    I am working on a multi-threaded application and need help with some pseudo-code. To make it simpler for implementation I will try to explain that in simple terms / test case. Here is the scenario - I have an array list of strings (say 100 strings) I have a Reader Class that reads the strings and passes them to a Writer Class that prints the strings to the console. Right now this runs in a Single Thread Model. I wanted to make this multi-threaded but with the following features - Ability to set MAX_READERS Ability to set MAX_WRITERS Ability to set BATCH_SIZE So basically the code should instantiate those many Readers and Writers and do the work in parallel. Any pseudo code will really be helpful to keep me going!

  • Multi-threaded downloader in C# question

    Currently I have multi-threaded downloader class that uses HttpWebRequest/Response. All works fine, it's super fast, BUT.. the problem is that the data needs to be streamed while it's downloading to another app. That means that it must be streamed in the right order, the first chunk first, and then the next in the queue. Currently my downloader class is sync and Download() returns byte[]. In my async multi-threaded class I make for example, list with 4 empty elements (for slots) and I pass each index of the slot to each thread using the Download() function. That simulates synchronization, but that's not what I need. How should I do the queue thing, to make sure the data is streamed as soon as the first chunk start downloading.

  • E-ink screens for desktop PC?

    Are there PC monitors which are e-ink displays? E-ink is so much easier to read documents on that I'd rather like a secondary monitor just for documents, but I can't find any monitors available currently. Perhaps just an e-reader with some kind of remote control from a PC, so that it can be put in a cradle and display a document, but it would also need to have a fairly large screen to make it practical (perhaps something like A4 (EU) or Letter (US) sized?)

    I am looking for additional monitor, I'm trying to save some money by looking on used and refurbished ones. Used monitors are usually noticeably cheaper, but it is quite difficult to find something close to the desired model. Their condition also vary significantly. Refurbished ones eliminate these problems for some additional money. Is there anything to look out for with refurbished monitors? Do many of the have lots of broken pixels etc?
