  • Big Data – Operational Databases Supporting Big Data – Key-Value Pair Databases and Document Databases – Day 13 of 21

    In yesterday’s blog post we learned the importance of the Relational Database and NoSQL database in the Big Data Story. In this article we will understand the role of Key-Value Pair Databases and Document Databases Supporting Big Data Story. Now we will see a few of the examples of the operational databases. Relational Databases (Yesterday’s post) NoSQL Databases (Yesterday’s post) Key-Value Pair Databases (This post) Document Databases (This post) Columnar Databases (Tomorrow’s post) Graph Databases (Tomorrow’s post) Spatial Databases (Tomorrow’s post) Key Value Pair Databases Key Value Pair Databases are also known as KVP databases. A key is a field name and attribute, an identifier. The content of that field is its value, the data that is being identified and stored. They have a very simple implementation of NoSQL database concepts. They do not have schema hence they are very flexible as well as scalable. The disadvantages of Key Value Pair (KVP) database are that they do not follow ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) properties. Additionally, it will require data architects to plan for data placement, replication as well as high availability. In KVP databases the data is stored as strings. As there is no specific schema or rules associated with the database, there are chances that database grows exponentially as well. It is very crucial to select the right Key Value Pair Database which offers an additional set of tools to manage the data and provides finer control over various business aspects of the same. Riak Rick is one of the most popular Key Value Database. It is known for its scalability and performance in high volume and velocity database. Additionally, it implements a mechanism for collection key and values which further helps to build manageable system. We will further discuss Riak in future blog posts. Key Value Databases are a good choice for social media, communities, caching layers for connecting other databases. In simpler words, whenever we required flexibility of the data storage keeping scalability in mind – KVP databases are good options to consider. Document Database There are two different kinds of document databases. 1) Full document Content (web pages, word docs etc) and 2) Storing Document Components for storage. The second types of the document database we are talking about over here. They use Javascript Object Notation (JSON) and Binary JSON for the structure of the documents. JSON is very easy to understand language and it is very easy to write for applications. There are two major structures of JSON used for Document Database – 1) Name Value Pairs and 2) Ordered List. MongoDB and CouchDB are two of the most popular Open Source NonRelational Document Database. MongoDB MongoDB databases are called collections. Each collection is build of documents and each document is composed of fields. MongoDB collections can be indexed for optimal performance. MongoDB ecosystem is highly available, supports query services as well as MapReduce. It is often used in high volume content management system. CouchDB CouchDB databases are composed of documents which consists fields and attachments (known as description). It supports ACID properties. The main attraction points of CouchDB are that it will continue to operate even though network connectivity is sketchy. Due to this nature CouchDB prefers local data storage. Document Database is a good choice of the database when users have to generate dynamic reports from elements which are changing very frequently. A good example of document usages is in real time analytics in social networking or content management system.   • Why would 70-persistent-net.rules have no effect?

    I've got a saucy server with a lot of NICs and they end up with weird names like "rename19". I know interface names can be changed by modifying the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file. The first clue that something is wrong is that that file did not exist even though it's supposed to be created automatically.   • What do you do to balance the upper or lower case style to name file or folder between work and life? [on hold]

    I am a programmer from China. And I like to use English words to name my files and folders Whether it is for work or life. For example, suck as Movie, Work, QtProjects, Music and so on.And I keep the habit of initial the first letter for file name or folder name in Windows. But now I work on Ubuntu, and I found that all file name and folder name are lowercase in addition to the default folder such as Music, Movie and so on. And then I realize that in Linux world, most peoloe like to use all lowercase to name their files and folders for two reasons (1. Linux is Case sensitive. 2. It is fast for shell command.). And after work, when I switch from Linux to Windows, I confuse to use all lowercase or the first letter uppercase style to name my files in Windows. I'm caught in a dilemma. I think that all lowercase is more efficiency but the first letter uppercase is more readable. I thought for a long time and want to come up with a good answer to blance the two style name conversion. But I failed. I want to ask you that how you balance the uppercase or lowercase habbit in Windows, Mac, Linux between work and personal life style? Thank you very much! (My current solution is that when I am in Linux, I use all lowercase for files and folders, but when I am in Windows and Mac OS X, I couldn't find a good reason to convince me to use all lowercase ( I think in Windows and Mac OS X, the first letter uppercase style for me is more readable and beautiful).

  • Boost.Program_Options not working with short options

    I have the following options_description: po::options_description config("Configuration File or Command Line"); config.add_options() ("run-time,t", po::value(&runTime_)-default_value(1440.0), "set max simulation duration") ("starting-iteration,i", po::value(&startingIteration_)-default_value(1), "set starting simulation iteration") ("repetitions,r", po::value(&repetitions_)-default_value(100), "set number of iterations") ... ; As you can see the three shown have a long,short names employed. The long versions all work. However, none of the short ones do, and each time I try a -t 12345.0 or a -i 12345, etc., I get the following from Program_Options: std::logic_error: in option 'starting-iteration': invalid option value I'm using Boost 1.42 on Win32. Any thoughts on what might be going on here? Thanks!

  • Preparing a MySQL INSERT/UPDATE statement with DEFAULT values

    Quoting MySQL INSERT manual - same goes for UPDATE: Use the keyword DEFAULT to set a column explicitly to its default value. This makes it easier to write INSERT statements that assign values to all but a few columns, because it enables you to avoid writing an incomplete VALUES list that does not include a value for each column in the table. Otherwise, you would have to write out the list of column names corresponding to each value in the VALUES list. So in short if I write INSERT INTO table1 (column1,column2) values ('value1',DEFAULT); A new row with column2 set as its default value - whatever it may be - is inserted. However if I prepare and execute a statement in PHP: $statement = $pdoObject-> prepare("INSERT INTO table1 (column1,column2) values (?,?)"); $statement->execute(array('value1','DEFAULT')); The new row will contain 'DEFAULT' as its text value - if the column is able to store text values. Now I have written an abstraction layer to PDO (I needed it) and to get around this issue am considering to introduce a const DEFAULT_VALUE = "randomstring"; So I could execute statements like this: $statement->execute(array('value1',mysql::DEFAULT_VALUE)); And then in method that does the binding I'd go through values that are sent to be bound and if some are equal to self::DEFAULT_VALUE, act accordingly. I'm pretty sure there's a better way to do this. Has someone else encountered similar situations?

  • DropDownList Value not changing with UpdatePanel and ModalPopupExtender

    Greetings, I have an asp.net webpage with an modalpopupextender inside of an updatepanel. When I click Ok on the popup, I can get the textbox values from the popup just fine, but the DropDownLists have the old/default value, not the new value I have selected for them. All the controls on the popup are set to enableviewstate = true, and autopostback = false (I just want to make the trip to the server when I click the ok button, not every time I change the value of the popups).   • Stupid problem with Javascript calculations and postbacks

    I'm working on an ASP.NET web app where I'm using a Wizard to take the client through a large series of steps. One of the steps includes calculating a bunch of numbers on the fly... the numbers calculate properly but when I click "next" and then go back again... some of the numbers are not retained.     An old work colleague used to quote his father about tools, "You have to be smarter than it." In the code below, Resharper is telling me, "Value assigned is not used in any execution path" (pointing to the first line). If I accept its offer of help, dt is not assigned a value ("today"). Is this a case where "I have to be smarter than it" and ignore their warning, or is this a case where the tool is smarter than me, and I'm just not understanding it? My take on the situation is that if the if statement fails, the current date is returned (the default value I want), but if I acquiesce to Resharper's "demands" it would return the default value for Datetime, which is the minimum date, which I assume is something like 7/4/1776 or 1/1/0000 or so.     I have 2 "lists" of (4) radio buttons {value = "0", "1", "2", "3"} in all lists. The first list needs to drive the second list (which may occur multiple times). So if an option is selected in the first list, the SAME option is selected in the second list. It sounds weird, but it has a purpose. The first list is more of a "select all" type of list, and the second list is an individual selection list(s). I have the value of the "selectall" list via JQuery: $("#selectalllist").change(function() { var str = $('input[name=selectall]:checked').val(); $(".radiolist").attr('checked', str); //This is my thinking }); The current selected value is stored in the str variable, and that is seemingly correct (I used alert to tell me what is stored, and it comes up what I expect). I just need to set the value of the next set of lists. The second line of the code I thought would set the checked value of $(".radiolist") to the stored value, but it ALWAYS set the value to the last entry (value = "3"). I'm wondering if I have the wrong attribute in the .attr('', str) call? Any thoughts?

    Hi, I have an Editor Grid where if a specific cell is in focus (is being edited), a window containing a tree panel pops up allowing the user to choose a node from the treepanel as the new value of the cell. This way, the user isn't actually editing the cell in question, but is using the window to choose the new value. But FTL is throwing an exception Expression name is undefined on line 1, column 3 in sample.ftl I tried with passing session instead of value stack and I could get the value in FTL. Please suggest me a way to get values from Action class to FTL from value stack. Thanks inadvance.
