  • The NEW Oracle Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange

    Oracle Enterprise Manager continues to expand its Eco-system with the NEW Extensibility Exchange! The Exchange offers a searchable listing of Enterprise Manager entities. Today it’s stocked with plug-ins and connectors for Enterprise Manager 12c and 11g. Anyone - partners, customers, ACE community members, anyone - can post an entity subject to approval of course. So in addition to plug-ins and connectors, the Exchange will have best practices, deployment procedures, templates, and essentially any Enterprise Manager entity that’s relevant. The Exchange provides Development Resources to guide contributors in the creation of plug-ins and connectors. A Community Resources page features plug-ins validated through the Oracle Validate Integration program as well as some other contributions important to customers.  You can also discover ways to get more involved with Enterprise Manager through the user and partner communities.   • Java UnknownHostException When and Why?

    I'm trying to post to a website from a Processing Sketch. (Processing is basically Java running in a fancy environment). I'm using this library : http://libraries.seltar.org/postToWeb/ but I don't know if that makes a difference. You can see from the stack trace below that this is just a wrapper for the Java standard library. Anyway, the important point is that the host "mysite.com" is up and running. I am seeing it from the browser. But when I try to post to it from Java I just get the UnknownHostException appearing. Given that the site is up. What else might this mean? The program is currently running inside the Processing environment.   • Oracle R Distribution 2-13.2 Update Available

    Oracle has released an update to the Oracle R Distribution, an Oracle-supported distribution of open source R. Oracle R Distribution 2-13.2 now contains the ability to dynamically link the following libraries on both Windows and Linux: The Intel Math Kernel Library (MKL) on Intel chips The AMD Core Math Library (ACML) on AMD chips To take advantage of the performance enhancements provided by Intel MKL or AMD ACML in Oracle R Distribution, simply add the MKL or ACML shared library directory to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH system environment variable. This automatically enables MKL or ACML to make use of all available processors, vastly speeding up linear algebra computations and eliminating the need to recompile R.  Even on a single core, the optimized algorithms in the Intel MKL libraries are faster than using R's standard BLAS library. Open-source R is linked to NetLib's BLAS libraries, but they are not multi-threaded and only use one core. While R's internal BLAS are efficient for most computations, it's possible to recompile R to link to a different, multi-threaded BLAS library to improve performance on eligible calculations. Compiling and linking to R yourself can be involved, but for many, the significantly improved calculation speed justifies the effort. Oracle R Distribution notably simplifies the process of using external math libraries by enabling R to auto-load MKL or ACML. For R commands that don't link to BLAS code, taking advantage of database parallelism using embedded R execution in Oracle R Enterprise is the route to improved performance. For more information about rebuilding R with different BLAS libraries, see the linear algebra section in the R Installation and Administration manual.   • Mongodb using db.help() on a particular db command

    When I type db.help() It returns DB methods: db.addUser(username, password[, readOnly=false]) db.auth(username, password) ... ... db.printShardingStatus() ... ... db.fsyncLock() flush data to disk and lock server for backups db.fsyncUnock() unlocks server following a db.fsyncLock() I'd like to find out how to get more detailed help for the particular command. The problem was with the printShardingStatus as it returned "too many chunks to print, use verbose if you want to print" mongos> db.printShardingStatus() --- Sharding Status --- sharding version: { "_id" : 1, "version" : 3 } shards: { "_id" : "shard0000", "host" : "localhost:10001" } { "_id" : "shard0001", "host" : "localhost:10002" } databases: { "_id" : "admin", "partitioned" : false, "primary" : "config" } { "_id" : "dbTest", "partitioned" : true, "primary" : "shard0000" } dbTest.things chunks: shard0001 12 shard0000 19 too many chunks to print, use verbose if you want to for ce print I found that for that particular command I can specify boolean parameter db.printShardingStatus(true) which wasn't shown using db.help().

  • What's new at Oracle in Gamification?

    It's been a crazy few weeks in Apps UX.  We are actively working on some gamification designs in now 4 different application product areas, as well as supporting some teams in other areas of Oracle.  Since that gets to be a pretty diverse group with a lot of resources and ideas, we've started a group in the Oracle Social Network on Gamification at Oracle.  That's limited to internal users at Oracle, but if you are interested in joining,  ping me directly for more information at [email protected]. We're planning another design jam like we did here at Oracle in May and at the Enterprise Gamification Forum in San Diego in September.  This time, we're taking the show to the UK, and hosting it with a group of customers on the Oracle Usability Advisory Board.  It should be a great event!   We're also actively designing some gamified flows which we'll be testing with users at the UKOUG to see what our customers think about some of our gamification ideas. We're looking at more feedback opportunities.  Internally, we surveyed 444 folks within Oracle about gamification and we'll be posting some of our findings on that here soon.  I'll be posting a blog on gamification for our customers at useableapps.oracle.com  in the next few weeks and I'll cross-post to here when it comes out.  So even though it's been quiet on this blog, we are busy and I'm hoping to push out more content in the next few weeks!  Would love to know what's most interesting to the folks reading so if there's something you especially want to see, feel free to comment or email me about it.

  • Did Oracle make public any plans to charge for JDK in the near future? [closed]

    I recently read an article: Twelve Disaster Scenarios Which Could Damage the Technology Industry which mentioned among other the possible "disaster scenarios" also: Oracle starts charging for the JDK, giving the following as argument: Oracle could start requiring license fees for the JDK from everyone but desktop users who haven't uninstalled the Java plug-in for some reason. This would burn down half the Java server-side market, but allow Oracle to fully monetize its acquisitions and investments. [...] Oracle tends to destroy markets to create products it can fully monetize. Even if you're not a Java developer, this would have a ripple effect throughout the market. [...] I actually haven't figured out why Larry hasn't decided Java should go this route yet. Some version of this scenario is actually in my company's statement of risks. I know guessing for the future is impossible, and speculating about that would be endless so I will try to frame my question in an objective answarable way: Did Oracle or someone from Oracle under anonymity, make public, or hinted, leaked to the public such a possibility or the above is plain journalistic speculation? I am unable to find the answer myself with Google generating a lot of noise by searching JDK.

  • Hidden exceptions

    Occasionally you may find yourself in a Java application environment where exceptions in your code are being caught by the application framework and either silently swallowed or converted into a generic exception. Either way, the potentially useful details of your original exception are inaccessible. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a VM option that showed the stack trace for every exception thrown, whether or not it's caught? In fact, HotSpot includes such an option: -XX:+TraceExceptions. However, this option is only available in a debug build of HotSpot (search globals.hpp for TraceExceptions). And based on a quick skim of the HotSpot source code, this option only prints the exception class and message. A more useful capability would be to have the complete stack trace printed as well as the code location catching the exception. This is what the various TraceException* options in in Maxine do (and more). That said, there is a way to achieve a limited version of the same thing with a stock standard JVM. Enterprise Manager’s compliance library is filled with a wide variety of standards based on Oracle’s recommendations, best practices and security guidelines. These standards can be easily associated to a target to generate a report showing its degree of conformance to that standard. ( To get an overview of  Database compliance management in Enterprise Manager see this screenwatch. ) Starting with release 12.1.0.4 of Enterprise Manager the compliance library will contain a new standard based on the US Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) for Oracle Database 11g. According to the DISA website, “The STIGs contain technical guidance to ‘lock down’ information systems/software that might otherwise be vulnerable to a malicious computer attack.” In essence, a STIG is a technical checklist an administrator can follow to secure a system or software. Many US government entities are required to follow these standards however many non-US government entities and commercial companies base their standards directly or partially on these STIGs. You can find more information about the Oracle Database and other STIGs on the DISA website. The Oracle Database 11g STIG consists of two categories of checks, installation and instance. Installation checks focus primarily on the security of the Oracle Home while the instance checks focus on the configuration of the running database instance itself. This could be something as simple as “Ensure the datacenter entrance is secured.” or complex as Oracle Database STIG Rule DG0186 – “The database should not be directly accessible from public or unauthorized networks”. These checks require a human to perform and attest to its successful completion. Enterprise Manager now supports these types of checks in Manual rules. When first associated to a target, each manual rule will generate a single violation. These violations must be manually cleared by a user who is in essence attesting to its successful completion. The user is able to permanently clear the violation or give a future date on which the violation will be regenerated. Setting a future date is useful when policy dictates a periodic re-validation of conformance wherein the user will have to reperform the check.
