  • How do you do the offsite hard drive backups?

    I have been doing hard drive backups for a while, which I believe a lot of you guys do as well, but am having trouble figuring out a better way storing them offsite. I am wondering how you guys out there do that. Any policy or tips & tricks when it comes to offsite store your backups, mainly hard drives not tapes. Thanks in advance. [update] Thanks for mentioning the online backup. We are actually in the middle of this process. And I 100% agree that it's the ultimate way to go. However, considering the cost, sometimes it may not be the option, as it's a quite expensive option if you also consider the application level. I guess online backup can be a very good one in the separate topic. :)

    We are trying to decide a good backup strategy for our new Hyper-V setup. We have 3 VMs on Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V host. We installed Symantec BackupExec 2010 on the host and have the Hyper-V Agent installed. We would like to perform a full backup at night to tape, and an incremental twice a day to a daily tape. Our environment needs constant protection for our database (Microsoft Access). Any thoughts? Should I be looking at different software?

  • Best server sync software/methods [closed]

    I have a test server at home and a test server at the office. I'd like to somehow sync multiple folders in both directions automatically so I can work at home and to also provide an offsite backup. I've tried Live Sync (Microsofts own product) but it chokes on large amounts of files and seems a bit rudimentary. Dropbox is also a bit small and does not adapt to our filesystem setup. I have seen a few online backup services but none seemed geared to multiple computers using the same account. I don't mind paying a monthly fee provided the service is good. Suggestions would be greatfully appreciated!

  • Restore data from one Windows edition to another

    I have a Swedish Windows 7 Home Premium on my PC, and I really want to change system language to English. I know that Home Premium can't change system language (only W7 Ultimate does that), so I consider buying an English version and make a clean install. However I do have many settings, programs etc that I don't want to lose. I therefore have two questions: Can I take a backup of my Swedish W7 Home Premium, install the English W7 Home Premium and then restore everything back to normal, except the system language is now English? Can I take a backup of my Swedish W7 Home Premium, install W7 Ultimate and then restore everything back to normal (now with the option to change system language)? Thanks!

    This may be a dumb question. I would like to use duplicity to make backups to Amazon S3 of directories, each of which contains a different user's data. Each directory could be written to at any time. So I have two questions: Should I be concerned that a scheduled backup of a directory might occur in the middle of data being written to files in the directory, resulting in a corrupted backup? And if that is a valid concern, how would I go about temporarily delaying an operation while IO was happening, to try to minimize that effect. Thanks for the advice

    I am trying to make a script to backup each of my plesk hosts to individual files, I am having two problems: I would like to remove the folder structure from archive, the tar is 3 folders deep I am getting this error: tar: Removing leading `/' from member names I need my archive to ignore folders named "catch" because I don't need them in my archive.     I've create a plain and siple backup script that only backs up certain files and folders. tar -zcf $DIRECTORY/var.www.tar.gz /var/www tar -zcf $DIRECTORY/development.tar.gz /development tar -zcf $DIRECTORY/home.tar.gz /home Now this script runs for about 30mins then gives me the following error gzip: stdout: File too large Any other solutions that I can use to backup my files using shell scripting or a way to solve this error? I'm grateful for any help.

    Setting up a new Windows 7 PC, I'm puzzled by two things in Thunderbird 3.1.9: I restored a profile from a three-month old backup, no problem. I then copied more recent files into the Mail/ directory, but TBird still shows the old messages. The last message in Inbox is dated 3/16/2011 -- how do I get TBird to display all the messages in the Local Folders/Inbox view? A large number of the existing messages are now displayed in separate tabs -- I can't tell you how many, but there could be over 1000. Which file governs this? Or can I hire someone from Mechanical Turk to come over and manually close each tab?

    i have method to backup my work on localhost based on week basis. i use multipe dos command and save in on a bat file. i use command such as copy and xcopy and save my localhost to another place. After my server grow larger, i think it take too much space. So tehre is a way to solve this problem ? maybe a software that can track changes on our php code or another method to preserve your code when thing go bad ?     What online backup tool allows you to: A) Back up Windows, Linux and optionally Mac desktops and servers to the cloud B) Do so by first backing up to a central server or appliance C) Allow restoring from that appliance when possible and if not go to the cloud For now the best option I have seen is i365 by seagate with an appliance between the local computers and the cloud. I know Microsoft also has an i365 plugin for DPM, as well as an Iron Mountain plugin. However, I feel that there must be a simpler way to do this. Can any of the "simpler" solutions like Jungle Disk or anything else going to s3, Mozy, Carbonite, Crashplan, etc do this? Thank you

    Hi, I'm facing a rebuilding of the volume on which I host the mail storage (kerio mailserver, which uses maildirs). I need to backup and restore as quick as possible the 3.5+ millions (for about 600GB) small files of the store directory. It takes more than 12 hours via rsync to a NFS share, but I also have a 1TB firewire 800 raid1 disk that I can use (from some preliminary tests it's faster). I'm working off a XServe intel. What is the fastest way to do it? Rsync? Finder copy? tar?

    I saw this question and was hoping that someone could expand upon the chosen answer (which I understood): Can you sudo mv Time Machine backup files as sudo from the trash to their original locations? I have tried doing this as root to no avail (operation not permitted). If not, can you successfully rm them via the trash via the terminal, faster than what the endless 'preparing to empty the trash' dialog suggests, and If you get the files back out of the trash can you tell if they are intact via disk utility (and how) Can you force indexing on a Time Machine drive in the same way that you would a normal drive to rebuild the TM index? I realize that a single answer could clarify all of the above, but I wanted to include details to be clear on what I am asking. Thanks for any help.

    Hello, I am looking for a rsync script that will backup specific directories from my home machine to a remote server nightly. So say: /home/me/Pictures to ssh -p 6587 [email protected]/Pictures. It would be nice if it can look for changes but im not worried so much about the changes aspect is having a script that runs at a certain time of night with cron or however. I have googled and found scripts but those scripts were specific to the operations of those creators. Any help would be happily accepted as the scripted part really throws me off. Thank you, Janice

  • Windows 2008 Domain Controller - Backup (BDC) to Primary (PDC)

    I have created a new domain controller with my single domain forest. I have also made it DHCP and DNS ready - all 3 services have synchronised with the existing W2K8 domain controller. I even migrated the FSMO roles and thought everything was fine. Indeed all machines on network appear to obtain DHCP and DNS from new server and the AD is working on the new server as my internal website uses it for login authentication. I have just noticed, via BgInfo - Sys Internals - that the new server is showing as "backup" and the old as "primary" - I thought I had already achieved this. Have the FSMO roles swapped back - as I have yet to have removed the old server from AD (dcpromo). Do I need to do anything before I run dcpromo on the old server? Any thoughts appreciated....
