  • How to design network protocols

    As a programmer, you work on your software design skills. You learn about things such as modularity and reusability and how you can achieve them in code. There's plenty of literature on the subject and engineers talk about it all the time. What about if you want to design network protocols? How do you judge that protocol X is badly designed while Y is well designed? (eg. in programming you are often pointed out to a well-written piece of code in order to learn from it - what is the equivalent for network protocols?) For example, suppose I want to design a P2P protocol similar to BitTorrent or I want to make a better version of the Socks protocol. How would I go about doing a good job on this? Thanks!

    i'm making my 1st game. i'm using javascript as i currently want to learn to make games without needing to learn another language but this is more of a general game dev question its a 2d turn-based tile/grid game. you can check it here http://www.patinterotest.tk/ it creates a movable area when you hover a player and it implements the A* algo for moving the player. The Problem: i want to make the 'dynamic movable area creation' already implement a limited number of steps for a player. The Questions: what is a good way to do this? is there another algorithm to use for this? the A* algorithm needs a start and destination, with what i want to do i don't have a destination or should i just limit the iteration of the A* algo to the steps variable? hopefully you understand the problem & questions easily

  • Wrapping up an Exciting Mobile World Congress

    Its been a busy week here in Barcelona, with noticeably more energy at the show than in 2010. This year, we decided to move the Java booth to the App Planet and really engage with the increasing number of developers that are attending the event. Our booth featured 10 demos and a series of nearly 25 workshops featuring a variety of topics ranging from information about Java Verified, to the use of web technologies with Java ME, to sessions hosted by Operators such as Orange and Telefonica (see image to the left).One of the more popular topics in our booth was the use of Java in the Smart Grid. In our booth we were showing off some of the work of the Hydra Consortium whose goal it is to leverage the emerging smart grid infrastructure to securely enable the delivery of personal health data (weight, blood pressure, etc) from the home to your doctor.   • How many questions is it appropriate to ask as an intern?

    So, I just started an internship, and I'm worried that I'm asking too many questions. My mentor assigns me projects and helps me learn all the company's technologies and methodologies. However, there's so much new material for me to learn while doing this project that I have a lot of questions. I generally ask questions over instant messages or E-mail (those are the primary modes of communication for my company). I'm trying to be careful not to ask too many questions: I don't want to come off as annoying or dumb. How many questions are appropriate to ask? Once an hour? More? Less? Keep in mind, my mentor is also a fellow programmer who has his own responsibilities.

    I am looking at this question primarily from a career point of view, so I hope you answer it accordingly. I am fairly proficient with Python, can write C++ and I am a final year student of computer science engineering I am looking to learn Haskell because I have heard a lot about it. My question is: apart from learning it because of all the good I have heard about it, is it any good for my career? Is it used in the industry? I am curious to learn it but unless it helps me somehow in my career, I am not willing to make that change at this stage. Looking for some personal experiences here. Thanks!

  • How do I grok NHibernate's QueryOver API?

    I've run into the limits of what NHibernate 3.0's LINQ provider is capable of and decided it's time to learn about one of the more powerful (or at least feature-complete) options: the QueryOver API. The problem is, I have zero experience with ICriteria, and all of the tutorials I've been able to find online either: Assume I'm an ICriteria expert and simply show me how to convert ICriteria code to the new fluent interface, or Are trivial "here's how you do an inner join" examples that don't really help me understand more complex concepts like projections, subqueries, requirements, or whatever other magic the API is capable of. What should I read to really learn about QueryOver, and how to make full use of it?

  • Artist, Looking to lean how to program games, where do I start? [on hold]

    I have bean an artist for many years now I am very comfortable with using Photoshop and Flash but I want to learn how to but together my own games, I bean doing my own research into this and at the moment I am at little bit stuck on witch direction to go down. So my question is witch programming language should I learn? I have already bean looking into this what i understand is that Gamemaker with its built in language (GML) is one of the most friendly to people who are new to the game making world. I have played around with this program and was pretty happy with it but I want more also you can use Unity with language such as C and javascript and then games built with Java witch looks interesting. One more thing before you send your answer in at this moment in time I would only be able to make 2D game but 3D isn't out of the picture.

I feel really bad about it and I hope I finally learn something from it. The stupid thing is, I've done these things before and I always tell myself, next time I won't be so stupid... Then it happens again and I feel even worse about it. I know you should keep your chin up and learn from your mistakes but here's the thing: I try to improve myself, I just don't see how I can prevent these things from happening.     Based on Why is so hard to develop a MMO?: Networked game development is not trivial; there are large obstacles to overcome in not only latency, but cheat prevention, state management and load balancing. If you're not experienced with writing a networked game, this is going to be a difficult learning exercise. I know the theory about sockets, servers, clients, protocols, connections and such things. Now I wonder how one can learn to write a network game: How to balance load problems? How to manage the game state? How to keep things synchronized? How to protect the communication and client from reverse engineering? How to work around latency problems? Which things should be computed local and which things on the server? ... Are there any good books, tutorials, sites, interesting articles or other questions regarding this? I'm looking for broad answers, but specific ones are fine too to learn the difference.
