  • Using a BTHomeHub as a wireless booster

    - by Ploo
    I currently have a BT HomeHub downstairs but the wireless signal isnt strong enough on the second floor. I have an old BT HomeHub from the previous contract that I wanted to set up upstairs. I currently have an ethernet cable leading up into the old router. I then took my laptop and plugged it into the old router in hopes of configuring it but when I cannot reach api.home which is the address of the router. I cannot connect to the router wirelessly either since the password was changed and I'd have to change it through config. At this point I am completely stumped, any ideas?

  • Which UPS, for home use, which can automatically shutdown the PC when battery is low?

    - by Tony_Henrich
    I am planning to build a single server machine which is highly dependent on data residing in RAM for performance reasons. I am looking for a UPS which can power the PC during a blackout (very rare) and when the battery level is like %20, it sends a signal to Windows 2008 to shutdown. Even if it's only for a few minutes, that's good enough. This is for home use so I am looking for an inexpensive unit ( less than $300? ). Which brand/model is good choice? I prefer one whose battery is easily & cheaply replaced.

  • hdmi output of windows 7 does not stay alive

    - by sjors miltenburg
    I have built a server that is connected to ONLY my tv (with hdmi). If I switch my tv to hdmi and boot my server I get the expected result (windows is displayed on my tv) and I can fully interact with it, no problem. However when "some time" passes the image on my tv dissapears and it seems the server is not outputting any hdmi signal anymore. It does not wake up on mousemove or keyboard presses. I can still interact with my server through a remote desktop session. The only way to get the hdmi output back is to reboot the server. I tried to prevent the computer from "sleeping" but this did not work. I tried upgrading from windows vista to windows 7 but this also did not work. Do you guys have any other ideas?

  • Does a HDMI-to-DVI (dual link) adapter exist? I don't care about the price

    - by alex k
    My monitor supports full-resolution display (2560x1440) only when connected to through either the DVI-D dual link port, or the DisplayPort. My laptop, though, has neither of these two kinds of output. Instead, all it's got is a HDMI port (which is version 1.3, and I also read that the laptop's graphics chipset supports 2560x1440 at 60Hz). So I'm wondering whether anyone has ever seen an HDMI-to-DVI dual link adapter, which will carry my ultra-highres signal to the monitor I just bought. So far I haven't seen any, and don't even know whether such an adapter (which I understand would have to be active, USB-powered and expensive (but I don't care)) exists.

  • Bluetooth RFCOMM / SDP connection to a RS232 adapter in android

    - by ThePosey
    Hello All, I am trying to use the Bluetooth Chat sample API app that google provides to connect to a bluetooth RS232 adapter hooked up to another device. Here is the app for reference: http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/BluetoothChat/index.html And here is the spec sheet for the RS232 connector just for reference: http://serialio.com/download/Docs/BlueSnap-guide-4.77_Commands.pdf Well the problem is that when I go to connect to the device with: mmSocket.connect(); (BluetoothSocket::connect()) I always get an IOException error thrown by the connect() method. When I do a toString on the exception I get "Service discovery failed". My question is mostly what are the cases that would cause an IOException to get thrown in the connect method? I know those are in the source somewhere but I don't know exactly how the java layer that you write apps in and the C/C++ layer that contains the actual stacks interface. I know that it uses the bluez bluetooth stack which is written in C/C++ but not sure how that ties into the java layer which is what I would think is throwing the exception. Any help on pointing me to where I can try to dissect this issue would be incredible. Also just to note I am able to pair with the RS232 adapter just fine but I am never able to actually connect. Here is the logcat output for more reference: I/ActivityManager( 1018): Displayed activity com.example.android.BluetoothChat/.DeviceListActivity: 326 ms (total 326 ms) E/BluetoothService.cpp( 1018): stopDiscoveryNative: D-Bus error in StopDiscovery: org.bluez.Error.Failed (Invalid discovery session) D/BluetoothChat( 1729): onActivityResult -1 D/BluetoothChatService( 1729): connect to: 00:06:66:03:0C:51 D/BluetoothChatService( 1729): setState() STATE_LISTEN - STATE_CONNECTING E/BluetoothChat( 1729): + ON RESUME + I/BluetoothChat( 1729): MESSAGE_STATE_CHANGE: STATE_CONNECTING I/BluetoothChatService( 1729): BEGIN mConnectThread E/BluetoothService.cpp( 1018): stopDiscoveryNative: D-Bus error in StopDiscovery: org.bluez.Error.Failed (Invalid discovery session) E/BluetoothEventLoop.cpp( 1018): event_filter: Received signal org.bluez.Device:PropertyChanged from /org/bluez/1498/hci0/dev_00_06_66_03_0C_51 I/BluetoothChatService( 1729): CONNECTION FAIL TOSTRING: java.io.IOException: Service discovery failed D/BluetoothChatService( 1729): setState() STATE_CONNECTING - STATE_LISTEN D/BluetoothChatService( 1729): start D/BluetoothChatService( 1729): setState() STATE_LISTEN - STATE_LISTEN I/BluetoothChat( 1729): MESSAGE_STATE_CHANGE: STATE_LISTEN V/BluetoothEventRedirector( 1080): Received android.bleutooth.device.action.UUID I/NotificationService( 1018): enqueueToast pkg=com.example.android.BluetoothChat callback=android.app.ITransientNotification$Stub$Proxy@446327c8 duration=0 I/BluetoothChat( 1729): MESSAGE_STATE_CHANGE: STATE_LISTEN E/BluetoothEventLoop.cpp( 1018): event_filter: Received signal org.bluez.Device:PropertyChanged from /org/bluez/1498/hci0/dev_00_06_66_03_0C_51 V/BluetoothEventRedirector( 1080): Received android.bleutooth.device.action.UUID The device I'm trying to connect to is the 00:06:66:03:0C:51 which I can scan for and apparently pair with just fine. The below is merged from a similar question which was successfully resolved by the selected answer here: How can one connect to an rfcomm device other than another phone in Android? The Android API provides examples of using listenUsingRfcommWithServiceRecord() to set up a socket and createRfcommSocketToServiceRecord() to connect to that socket. I'm trying to connect to an embedded device with a BlueSMiRF Gold chip. My working Python code (using the PyBluez library), which I'd like to port to Android, is as follows: sock = bluetooth.BluetoothSocket(proto=bluetooth.RFCOMM) sock.connect((device_addr, 1)) return sock.makefile() ...so the service to connect to is simply defined as channel 1, without any SDP lookup. As the only documented mechanism I see in the Android API does SDP lookup of a UUID, I'm slightly at a loss. Using "sdptool browse" from my Linux host comes up empty, so I surmise that the chip in question simply lacks SDP support.

  • Application stopped unexpectedly at launch

    - by Chris Stryker
    I've run this on a device and on the emulator. The app stops unexpectedly on both. I have not a clue what is wrong currently. It uses Google API Maps I compiled with Google Api 7. I followed this tutorial http://developer.android.com/guide/tutorials/views/hello-mapview.html (made some alterations clearly) I did use the correct API Key That the final apk is signed with This is the source(If you compile it shouldn't work as it is unsigned) This is the compiled signed apk Log 03-21 00:30:38.912: INFO/ActivityManager(54): Starting activity: Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN flg=0x10000000 cmp=com.chris.stryker.worldly/.com.poppoob.WorldlyMap } 03-21 00:30:39.173: INFO/ActivityManager(54): Start proc com.chris.stryker.worldly for activity com.chris.stryker.worldly/.com.poppoob.WorldlyMap: pid=287 uid=10031 gids={3003, 1015} 03-21 00:30:39.532: DEBUG/ddm-heap(287): Got feature list request 03-21 00:30:40.185: WARN/dalvikvm(287): Unable to resolve superclass of Lcom/chris/stryker/worldly/com/poppoob/WorldlyMap; (17) 03-21 00:30:40.193: WARN/dalvikvm(287): Link of class 'Lcom/chris/stryker/worldly/com/poppoob/WorldlyMap;' failed 03-21 00:30:40.205: DEBUG/AndroidRuntime(287): Shutting down VM 03-21 00:30:40.223: WARN/dalvikvm(287): threadid=3: thread exiting with uncaught exception (group=0x4001b188) 03-21 00:30:40.223: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to instantiate activity ComponentInfo{com.chris.stryker.worldly/com.chris.stryker.worldly.com.poppoob.WorldlyMap}: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.chris.stryker.worldly.com.poppoob.WorldlyMap in loader dalvik.system.PathClassLoader@45a13938 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2417) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2512) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread.access$2200(ActivityThread.java:119) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(ActivityThread.java:1863) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4363) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:860) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:618) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.chris.stryker.worldly.com.poppoob.WorldlyMap in loader dalvik.system.PathClassLoader@45a13938 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at dalvik.system.PathClassLoader.findClass(PathClassLoader.java:243) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:573) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:532) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.Instrumentation.newActivity(Instrumentation.java:1021) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2409) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): ... 11 more 03-21 00:30:40.300: INFO/Process(54): Sending signal.   • Qt 4.6 Adding objects and sub-objects to QWebView window object (C++ & Javascript)

    - by Cor
    I am working with Qt's QWebView, and have been finding lots of great uses for adding to the webkit window object. One thing I would like to do is nested objects... for instance: in Javascript I can... var api = new Object; api.os = new Object; api.os.foo = function(){} api.window = new Object(); api.window.bar = function(){} obviously in most cases this would be done through a more OO js-framework. This results in a tidy structure of: >>>api ------------------------------------------------------- - api Object {os=Object, more... } - os Object {} foo function() - win Object {} bar function() ------------------------------------------------------- Right now I'm able to extend the window object with all of the qtC++ methods and signals I need, but they all have 'seem' to have to be in a root child of "window". This is forcing me to write a js wrapper object to get the hierarchy that I want in the DOM. >>>api ------------------------------------------------------- - api Object {os=function, more... } - os_foo function() - win_bar function() ------------------------------------------------------- This is a pretty simplified example... I want objects for parameters, etc... Does anyone know of a way to pass an child object with the object that extends the WebFrame's window object? Here's some example code of how I'm adding the object: mainwindow.h #ifndef MAINWINDOW_H #define MAINWINDOW_H #include <QtGui/QMainWindow> #include <QWebFrame> #include "mainwindow.h" #include "happyapi.h" class QWebView; class QWebFrame; QT_BEGIN_NAMESPACE class MainWindow : public QMainWindow { Q_OBJECT public: MainWindow(QWidget *parent = 0); private slots: void attachWindowObject(); void bluesBros(); private: QWebView *view; HappyApi *api; QWebFrame *frame; }; #endif // MAINWINDOW_H mainwindow.cpp #include <QDebug> #include <QtGui> #include <QWebView> #include <QWebPage> #include "mainwindow.h" #include "happyapi.h" MainWindow::MainWindow(QWidget *parent) : QMainWindow(parent) { view = new QWebView(this); view->load(QUrl("file:///Q:/example.htm")); api = new HappyApi(this); QWebPage *page = view->page(); frame = page->mainFrame(); attachWindowObject(); connect(frame, SIGNAL(javaScriptWindowObjectCleared()), this, SLOT(attachWindowObject())); connect(api, SIGNAL(win_bar()), this, SLOT(bluesBros())); setCentralWidget(view); }; void MainWindow::attachWindowObject() { frame->addToJavaScriptWindowObject(QString("api"), api); }; void MainWindow::bluesBros() { qDebug() << "foo and bar are getting the band back together!"; }; happyapi.h #ifndef HAPPYAPI_H #define HAPPYAPI_H #include <QObject> class HappyApi : public QObject { Q_OBJECT public: HappyApi(QObject *parent); public slots: void os_foo(); signals: void win_bar(); }; #endif // HAPPYAPI_H happyapi.cpp #include <QDebug> #include "happyapi.h" HappyApi::HappyApi(QObject *parent) : QObject(parent) { }; void HappyApi::os_foo() { qDebug() << "foo called, it want's it's bar back"; }; I'm reasonably new to C++ programming (coming from a web and python background). Hopefully this example will serve to not only help other new users, but be something interesting for a more experienced c++ programmer to elaborate on. Thanks for any assistance that can be provided. :)

  • Synchronizing issue: I want the main thread to be run before another thread but it sometimes doesn´t

    - by Rox
    I have done my own small concurrency framework (just for learning purposes) inspired by the java.util.concurrency package. This is about the Callable/Future mechanism. My code below is the whole one and is compilable and very easy to understand. My problem is that sometimes I run into a deadlock where the first thread (the main thread) awaits for a signal from the other thread. But then the other thread has already notified the main thread before the main thread went into waiting state, so the main thread cannot wake up. FutureTask.get() should always be run before FutureTask.run() but sometimes the run() method (which is called by new thread) runs before the get() method (which is called by main thread). I don´t know how I can prevent that. This is a pseudo code of how I want the two threads to be run. //From main thread: Executor.submit().get() (in get() the main thread waits for new thread to notify) ->submit() calls Executor.execute(FutureTask object) -> execute() starts new thread -> new thread shall notify `main thread` I cannot understand how the new thread can start up and run faster than the main thread that actually starts the new thread. Main.java: public class Main { public static void main(String[] args) { new ExecutorServiceExample(); } public Main() { ThreadExecutor executor = new ThreadExecutor(); Integer i = executor.submit(new Callable<Integer>() { @Override public Integer call() { return 10; } }).get(); System.err.println("Value: "+i); } } ThreadExecutor.java: public class ThreadExecutor { public ThreadExecutor() {} protected <V> RunnableFuture<V> newTaskFor(Callable c) { return new FutureTask<V>(c); } public <V> Future<V> submit(Callable<V> task) { if (task == null) throw new NullPointerException(); RunnableFuture<V> ftask = newTaskFor(task); execute(ftask); return ftask; } public void execute(Runnable r) { new Thread(r).start(); } } FutureTask.java: import java.util.concurrent.locks.Condition; import java.util.concurrent.locks.ReentrantLock; import java.util.logging.Level; import java.util.logging.Logger; public class FutureTask<V> implements RunnableFuture<V> { private Callable<V> callable; private volatile V result; private ReentrantLock lock = new ReentrantLock(); private Condition condition = lock.newCondition(); public FutureTask(Callable callable) { if (callable == null) throw new NullPointerException(); this.callable = callable; } @Override public void run() { acquireLock(); System.err.println("RUN"+Thread.currentThread().getName()); V v = this.callable.call(); set(v); condition.signal(); releaseLock(); } @Override public V get() { acquireLock(); System.err.println("GET "+Thread.currentThread().getName()); try { condition.await(); } catch (InterruptedException ex) { Logger.getLogger(FutureTask.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } releaseLock(); return this.result; } public void set(V v) { this.result = v; } private void acquireLock() { lock.lock(); } private void releaseLock() { lock.unlock(); } } And the interfaces: public interface RunnableFuture<V> extends Runnable, Future<V> { @Override void run(); } public interface Future<V> { V get(); } public interface Callable<V> { V call(); }

  • image processing algorithm in MATLAB

    - by user261002
    I am trying to reconstruct an algorithm belong to this paper: Decomposition of biospeckle images in temporary spectral bands Here is an explanation of the algorithm: We recorded a sequence of N successive speckle images with a sampling frequency fs. In this way it was possible to observe how a pixel evolves through the N images. That evolution can be treated as a time series and can be processed in the following way: Each signal corresponding to the evolution of every pixel was used as input to a bank of filters. The intensity values were previously divided by their temporal mean value to minimize local differences in reflectivity or illumination of the object. The maximum frequency that can be adequately analyzed is determined by the sampling theorem and s half of sampling frequency fs. The latter is set by the CCD camera, the size of the image, and the frame grabber. The bank of filters is outlined in Fig. 1. In our case, ten 5° order Butterworth11 filters were used, but this number can be varied according to the required discrimination. The bank was implemented in a computer using MATLAB software. We chose the Butter-worth filter because, in addition to its simplicity, it is maximally flat. Other filters, an infinite impulse response, or a finite impulse response could be used. By means of this bank of filters, ten corresponding signals of each filter of each temporary pixel evolution were obtained as output. Average energy Eb in each signal was then calculated: where pb(n) is the intensity of the filtered pixel in the nth image for filter b divided by its mean value and N is the total number of images. In this way, en values of energy for each pixel were obtained, each of hem belonging to one of the frequency bands in Fig. 1. With these values it is possible to build ten images of the active object, each one of which shows how much energy of time-varying speckle there is in a certain frequency band. False color assignment to the gray levels in the results would help in discrimination. and here is my MATLAB code base on that : clear all for i=0:39 str = num2str(i); str1 = strcat(str,'.mat'); load(str1); D{i+1}=A; end new_max = max(max(A)); new_min = min(min(A)); for i=20:180 for j=20:140 ts = []; for k=1:40 ts = [ts D{k}(i,j)]; %%% kth image pixel i,j --- ts is time series end ts = double(ts); temp = mean(ts); ts = ts-temp; ts = ts/temp; N = 5; % filter order W = [0.00001 0.05;0.05 0.1;0.1 0.15;0.15 0.20;0.20 0.25;0.25 0.30;0.30 0.35;0.35 0.40;0.40 0.45;0.45 0.50]; N1 = 5; for ind = 1:10 Wn = W(ind,:); [B,A] = butter(N1,Wn); ts_f(ind,:) = filter(B,A,ts); end for ind=1:10 imag_test1{ind}(i,j) =sum((ts_f(ind,:)./mean(ts_f(ind,:))).^2); end end end for i=1:10 temp_imag = imag_test1{i}(:,:); x=isnan(temp_imag); temp_imag(x)=0; temp_imag=medfilt2(temp_imag); t_max = max(max(temp_imag)); t_min = min(min(temp_imag)); temp_imag = (temp_imag-t_min).*(double(new_max-new_min)/double(t_max-t_min))+double(new_min); imag_test2{i}(:,:) = temp_imag; end for i=1:10 A=imag_test2{i}(:,:); B=A/max(max(A)); B=histeq(B); figure,imshow(B) colorbar end but I am not getting the same result as paper. has anybody has aby idea why? or where I have gone wrong? • How do I handle calls to AudioTrack from jni without crashing?

    - by icecream
    I was trying to write to an AudioTrack from a jni callback, and I get a signal 7 (SIGBUS), fault addr 00000000. I have looked at the Wolf3D example for odroid and they seem to use a android.os.Handler to post a Runnable that will do an update in the correct thread context. I have also tried AttachCurrentThread, but I fail in this case also. It works to play the sound when running from the constructor even if I wrap it in a thread and then post it to the handler. When I do the "same" via a callback from jni it fails. I assume I am braeaking some rules, but I haven't been able to figure out what they are. So far, I haven't found the answer here on SO. So I wonder if anyone knows how this should be done. EDIT: Answered below. The following code is to illustrate the problem. Java: package com.example.jniaudiotrack; import android.app.Activity; import android.media.AudioFormat; import android.media.AudioManager; import android.media.AudioTrack; import android.os.Bundle; import android.os.Handler; import android.util.Log; public class JniAudioTrackActivity extends Activity { AudioTrack mAudioTrack; byte[] mArr; public static final Handler mHandler = new Handler(); /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); mArr = new byte[2048]; for (int i = 0; i < 2048; i++) { mArr[i] = (byte) (Math.sin(i) * 128); } mAudioTrack = new AudioTrack(AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC, 11025, AudioFormat.CHANNEL_CONFIGURATION_MONO, AudioFormat.ENCODING_PCM_8BIT, 2048, AudioTrack.MODE_STREAM); mAudioTrack.play(); new Thread(new Runnable() { public void run() { mHandler.post(new Runnable() { public void run() { mAudioTrack.write(mArr, 0, 2048); Log.i(TAG, "*** Handler from constructor ***"); } }); } }).start(); new Thread(new Runnable() { public void run() { audioFunc(); } }).start(); } public native void audioFunc(); @SuppressWarnings("unused") private void audioCB() { mHandler.post(new Runnable() { public void run() { mAudioTrack.write(mArr, 0, 2048); Log.i(TAG, "*** audioCB called ***"); } }); } private static final String TAG = "JniAudioTrackActivity"; static { System.loadLibrary("jni_audiotrack"); } } cpp: #include <jni.h> extern "C" { JNIEXPORT void Java_com_example_jniaudiotrack_JniAudioTrackActivity_audioFunc(JNIEnv* env, jobject obj); } JNIEXPORT void Java_com_example_jniaudiotrack_JniAudioTrackActivity_audioFunc(JNIEnv* env, jobject obj) { JNIEnv* jniEnv; JavaVM* vm; env->GetJavaVM(&vm); vm->AttachCurrentThread(&jniEnv, 0); jclass cls = env->GetObjectClass(obj); jmethodID audioCBID = env->GetMethodID(cls, "audioCB", "()V"); if (!audioCBID) { return; } env->CallVoidMethod(cls, audioCBID); } Trace snippet: I/DEBUG ( 1653): pid: 9811, tid: 9811 >>> com.example.jniaudiotrack <<< I/DEBUG ( 1653): signal 7 (SIGBUS), fault addr 00000000 I/DEBUG ( 1653): r0 00000800 r1 00000026 r2 00000001 r3 00000000 I/DEBUG ( 1653): r4 42385726 r5 41049e54 r6 bee25570 r7 ad00e540 I/DEBUG ( 1653): r8 000040f8 r9 41048200 10 41049e44 fp 00000000 I/DEBUG ( 1653): ip 000000f8 sp bee25530 lr ad02dbb5 pc ad012358 cpsr 20000010 I/DEBUG ( 1653): #00 pc 00012358 /system/lib/libdvm.so

  • DSP - Problems using the inverse Fast Fourier Transform

    - by Trap
    I've been playing around a little with the Exocortex implementation of the FFT, but I'm having some problems. First, after calculating the inverse FFT of an unchanged frequency spectrum obtained by a previous forward FFT, one would expect to get the original signal back, but this is not the case. I had to figure out that I needed to scale the FFT output to about 1 / fftLength to get the amplitudes ok. Why is this? Second, whenever I modify the amplitudes of the frequency bins before calling the iFFT the signal gets distorted at low frequencies. However, this does not happen if I attenuate all the bins by the same factor. Let me put a very simplified example of the output buffer of a 4-sample FFT: // Bin 0 (DC) FFTOut[0] = 0.0000610351563 FFTOut[1] = 0.0 // Bin 1 FFTOut[2] = 0.000331878662 FFTOut[3] = 0.000629425049 // Central bin FFTOut[4] = -0.0000381469727 FFTOut[5] = 0.0 // Bin 3, this is a negative frequency bin. FFTOut[6] = 0.000331878662 FFTOut[7] = -0.000629425049 The output is composed of pairs of floats, each representing the real and imaginay parts of a single bin. So, bin 0 (array indexes 0, 1) would represent the real and imaginary parts of the DC frequency. As you can see, bins 1 and 3 both have the same values, (except for the sign of the Im part), so I guess these are the negative frequency values, and finally indexes (4, 5) would be the central frequency bin. To attenuate the frequency bin 1 this is what I do: // Attenuate the 'positive' bin FFTOut[2] *= 0.5; FFTOut[3] *= 0.5; // Attenuate its corresponding negative bin. FFTOut[6] *= 0.5; FFTOut[7] *= 0.5; For the actual tests I'm using a 1024-length FFT and I always provide all the samples so no 0-padding is needed. // Attenuate var halfSize = fftWindowLength / 2; float leftFreq = 0f; float rightFreq = 22050f; for( var c = 1; c < halfSize; c++ ) { var freq = c * (44100d / halfSize); // Calc. positive and negative frequency locations. var k = c * 2; var nk = (fftWindowLength - c) * 2; // This kind of attenuation corresponds to a high-pass filter. // The attenuation at the transition band is linearly applied, could // this be the cause of the distortion of low frequencies? var attn = (freq < leftFreq) ? 0 : (freq < rightFreq) ? ((freq - leftFreq) / (rightFreq - leftFreq)) : 1; mFFTOut[ k ] *= (float)attn; mFFTOut[ k + 1 ] *= (float)attn; mFFTOut[ nk ] *= (float)attn; mFFTOut[ nk + 1 ] *= (float)attn; } Obviously I'm doing something wrong but can't figure out what or where.

  • DSP - Filtering in the frequency domain via FFT

    - by Trap
    I've been playing around a little with the Exocortex implementation of the FFT, but I'm having some problems. Whenever I modify the amplitudes of the frequency bins before calling the iFFT the resulting signal contains some clicks and pops, especially when low frequencies are present in the signal (like drums or basses). However, this does not happen if I attenuate all the bins by the same factor. Let me put an example of the output buffer of a 4-sample FFT: // Bin 0 (DC) FFTOut[0] = 0.0000610351563 FFTOut[1] = 0.0 // Bin 1 FFTOut[2] = 0.000331878662 FFTOut[3] = 0.000629425049 // Bin 2 FFTOut[4] = -0.0000381469727 FFTOut[5] = 0.0 // Bin 3, this is the first and only negative frequency bin. As you can see, bins 1 and 3 both have the same values, (except for the sign of the Im part), so I guess bin 3 is the first negative frequency, and finally indexes (4, 5) would be the last positive frequency bin. Then to attenuate the frequency bin 1 this is what I do: // Attenuate the 'positive' bin FFTOut[2] *= 0.5; FFTOut[3] *= 0.5; // Attenuate its corresponding negative bin. FFTOut[6] *= 0.5; FFTOut[7] *= 0.5; For the actual tests I'm using a 1024-length FFT and I always provide all the samples so no 0-padding is needed. // Attenuate var halfSize = fftWindowLength / 2; float leftFreq = 0f; float rightFreq = 22050f; for( var c = 1; c < halfSize; c++ ) { var freq = c * (44100d / halfSize); // Calc. positive and negative frequency indexes. var k = c * 2; var nk = (fftWindowLength - c) * 2; // This kind of attenuation corresponds to a high-pass filter. // The attenuation at the transition band is linearly applied, could // this be the cause of the distortion of low frequencies? var attn = (freq < leftFreq) ? 0 : (freq < rightFreq) ? ((freq - leftFreq) / (rightFreq - leftFreq)) : 1; // Attenuate positive and negative bins. mFFTOut[ k ] *= (float)attn; mFFTOut[ k + 1 ] *= (float)attn; mFFTOut[ nk ] *= (float)attn; mFFTOut[ nk + 1 ] *= (float)attn; } Obviously I'm doing something wrong but can't figure out what. I don't want to use the FFT output as a means to generate a set of FIR coefficients since I'm trying to implement a very basic dynamic equalizer. What's the correct way to filter in the frequency domain? what I'm missing? Thanks in advance.

  • VHDL gate basics

    - by balina
    Hello. I'm learning VHDL and I've come to a halt. I'd like to create a simple gate out of smaller gates (a NAND gate here). Here's the code: library IEEE; use IEEE.STD_LOGIC_1164.all; entity ANDGATE2 is port( x,y : in STD_LOGIC; z : out STD_LOGIC ); end ANDGATE2; architecture ANDGATE2 of ANDGATE2 is begin z <= x AND y; end ANDGATE2; library IEEE; use IEEE.STD_LOGIC_1164.all; entity NOTGATE1 is port( x : in STD_LOGIC; z : out STD_LOGIC ); end NOTGATE1; architecture NOTGATE1 of NOTGATE1 is begin z <= NOT x; end NOTGATE1; library ieee; use ieee.std_logic_1164.all; entity NANDGATE2 is port( x : in STD_LOGIC; y : in STD_LOGIC; z : out STD_LOGIC ); end NANDGATE2; architecture NANDGATE2 of NANDGATE2 is signal c, d: std_logic; component NOTGATE1 port( n_in : in STD_LOGIC; n_out : out STD_LOGIC ); end component; component ANDGATE2 port( a_in1, a_in2 : in STD_LOGIC; a_out : out STD_LOGIC ); end component; begin N0: ANDGATE2 port map(x, y, c); N1: NOTGATE1 port map(c, d); z <= d; end NANDGATE2; Here's the code from some tutorial I've been using as a template; it compiles with no problems. library ieee; use ieee.std_logic_1164.all; -- definition of a full adder entity FULLADDER is port ( a, b, c: in std_logic; sum, carry: out std_logic ); end FULLADDER; architecture fulladder_behav of FULLADDER is begin sum <= (a xor b) xor c ; carry <= (a and b) or (c and (a xor b)); end fulladder_behav; -- 4-bit adder library ieee; use ieee.std_logic_1164.all; entity FOURBITADD is port ( a, b: in std_logic_vector(3 downto 0); Cin : in std_logic; sum: out std_logic_vector (3 downto 0); Cout, V: out std_logic ); end FOURBITADD; architecture fouradder_structure of FOURBITADD is signal c: std_logic_vector (4 downto 0); component FULLADDER port ( a, b, c: in std_logic; sum, carry: out std_logic ); end component; begin FA0: FULLADDER port map (a(0), b(0), Cin, sum(0), c(1)); FA1: FULLADDER port map (a(1), b(1), C(1), sum(1), c(2)); FA2: FULLADDER port map (a(2), b(2), C(2), sum(2), c(3)); FA3: FULLADDER port map (a(3), b(3), C(3), sum(3), c(4)); V <= c(3) xor c(4); Cout <= c(4); end fouradder_structure; My code compiles with no errors, but with two warnings: # Warning: ELAB1_0026: p2.vhd : (85, 0): There is no default binding for component "andgate2".(Port "a_in1" is not on the entity). # Warning: ELAB1_0026: p2.vhd : (87, 0): There is no default binding for component "notgate1".(Port "n_in" is not on the entity).   • Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Batman

    - by Pinal Dave
    Batman is one of the darkest superheroes in the fantasy canon.  He does not come to his powers through any sort of magical coincidence or radioactive insect, but through a lot of psychological scarring caused by witnessing the death of his parents.  Despite his dark back story, he possesses a lot of admirable abilities that I feel bear comparison to developers. Batman has the distinct advantage that his alter ego, Bruce Wayne is a millionaire (or billionaire in today’s reboots).  This means that he can spend his time working on his athletic abilities, building a secret lair, and investing his money in cool tools.  This might not be true for developers (well, most developers), but I still think there are many parallels. So how are developers like Batman? Well, read on my list of reasons. Develop Skills Batman works on his skills.  He didn’t get the strength to scale Gotham’s skyscrapers by inheriting his powers or suffering an industrial accident.  Developers also hone their skills daily.  They might not be doing pull-ups and scaling buldings, but I think their skills are just as impressive. Clear Goals Batman is driven to build a better Gotham.  He knows that the criminal who killed his parents was a small-time thief, not a super villain – so he has larger goals in mind than simply chasing one villain.  He wants his city as a whole to be better.  Developers are also driven to make things better.  It can be easy to get hung up on one problem, but in the end it is best to focus on the well-being of the system as a whole. Ultimate Teamplayers Batman is the hero Gotham needs – even when that means appearing to be the bad guys.  Developers probably know that feeling well.  Batman takes the fall for a crime he didn’t commit, and developers often have to deliver bad news about the limitations of their networks and servers.  It’s not always a job filled with glory and thanks, but someone has to do it. Always Ready Batman and the Boy Scouts have this in common – they are always prepared.  Let’s add developers to this list.  Batman has an amazing tool belt with gadgets and gizmos, and let’s not even get into all the functions of the Batmobile!  Developers’ skills might be the knowledge and skills they have developed, not tools they can carry in a utility belt, but that doesn’t make them any less impressive. 100% Dedication Bruce Wayne cultivates the personality of a playboy, never keeping the same girlfriend for long and spending his time partying.  Even though he hides it, his driving force is his deep concern and love for his friends and the city as a whole.  Developers also care a lot about their company and employees – even when it is driving them crazy.  You do your best work when you care about your job on a personal level. Quality Output Batman believes the city deserves to be saved.  The citizens might have a love-hate relationship with both Batman and Bruce Wayne, and employees might not always appreciate developers.  Batman and developers, though, keep working for the best of everyone. I hope you are all enjoying reading about developers-as-superheroes as much as I am enjoying writing about them.  Please tell me how else developers are like Superheroes in the comments – especially if you know any developers who are faster than a speeding bullet and can leap tall buildings in a single bound. • Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Superman

    - by Pinal Dave
    I enjoyed comparing developers to Spiderman so much, that I have decided to continue the trend and encourage some of my favorite people (developers) with another favorite superhero – Superman.  Superman is probably the most famous superhero – and one of the most inspiring. Everyone has their own favorite, but Superman has been the longest enduring of all comic book characters.  Clark Kent has inspired multiple movie series, TV shows, books, cartoons, and costumes.  Superman’s enduring popularity has been attributed to his superhuman strength, integrity, dedication to good, and his humility in keeping his identity a secret. So how are developers like Superman? Well, read on my list of reasons. Secret Identities They have secret identities.  I’m not saying that all developers wear thick glasses and go by an alias like “Clark Kent.”  But developers certainly work in the background, making sure everything runs smoothly, often without recognition.  Like Superman, when they have done their job right, no one knows they were there. Working Alone You don’t have to work alone.  Superman doesn’t have a sidekick like Robin or Bat Girl, but he is a major player in the Justice League.  Developers have amazing skills, and they shouldn’t be afraid to unite those skills to solve some of the world’s major problems (like slow networks). Daily Inspiration Developers are inspiring.  Clark Kent works at The Daily Planet, Metropolis’ newspaper, which is lucky because he can keep some of the publicity Superman inspires under wraps.  Developers might go unnoticed sometimes, but when people hear about some of the tasks they accomplish on a daily basis, it inspires awe. Discover Your Superpowers You have to discover your superpowers.  Clark Kent didn’t just wake up one morning with the full understanding that he could fly, leap tall buildings in a single bound, and was stronger than a speeding locomotive.  He slowly discovered these powers (after a few comic book-worthy misunderstandings!).  Developers are always learning and growing as well.  You probably won’t wake up with super powers, either, but years of practice and continuing education can get you close. Every Day is a New Day The story continues.  The Superman comic books are still being printed, and have been in print since 1938.  There have been two TV series, (one, Smallville, was on TV for ten seasons) and multiple cartoon adaptations.  There have been multiple movies, with many different actors.  A new reboot came out last year, and another is set to premier in 2016.   So, developers, when you are having a bad day or a problem seems unsolvable – remember, the story will continue!  There is always tomorrow. I hope you are all enjoying reading about developers-as-superheroes as much as I am enjoying writing about them.  Please tell me how else developers are like Superheroes in the comments – especially if you know any developers who are faster than a speeding bullet and can leap tall buildings in a single bound. • Microsoft silverlight 5.0 features for developers

    - by Jalpesh P. Vadgama
    Recently on Silverlight 5.0 firestarter event ScottGu has announced road map for Silverlight 5.0. There will be lots of features that will be there in silverlight 5.0 but here are few glimpses of Silverlight 5.0 Features. Improved Data binding support and Better support for MVVM: One of the greatest strength of Silverlight is its data binding. Microsoft is going to enhanced data binding by providing more ability to debug it. Developer will able to debug the binding expression and other stuff in Siverlight 5.0. Its also going to provide Ancestor Relative source binding which will allow property to bind with container control. MVVM pattern support will also be enhanced. Performance and Speed Enhancement: Now silverlight 5.0 will have support for 64bit browser support. So now you can use that silverlight application on 64 bit platform also. There is no need to take extra care for it.It will also have faster startup time and greater support for hardware acceleration. It will also provide end to end support for hard acceleration features of IE 9. More support for Out Of Browser Application: With Siverlight 4.0 Microsoft has announced new features called out of browser application and it has amazed lots of developer because now possibilities are unlimited with it. Now in silverlight 5.0 Out Of Browser application will have ability to Create Manage child windows just like windows forms or WPF Application. So you can fill power of desktop application with your out of browser application. Testing Support with Visual Studio 2010: Microsoft is going to add automated UI Testing support with Visual Studio 2010 with silverlight 5.0. So now we can test UI of Silverlight much faster. Better Support for RIA Services: RIA Services allows us to create N-tier application with silverlight via creating proxy classes on client and server both side. Now it will more features like complex type support, Custom type support for MVVM(Model View View Model) pattern. WCF Enhancements: There are lots of enhancement with WCF but key enhancement will WSTrust support. Text and Printing Support: Silverlight 5.0 will support vector base graphics. It will also support multicolumn text flow and linked text containers. It will full open type support,Postscript vector enhancement. Improved Power Enhancement: This will prevent screensaver from activating while you are watching videos on silverlight. Silverlight 5.0 is going add that smartness so it can determine while you are going to watch video and while you are not going watch videos. Better support for graphics: Silverlight 5.0 will provide in-depth support for 3D API. Now 3D rendering support is more enhancement in silverlight and 3D graphics can be rendered easily. You can find more details on following links and also don’t forgot to view silverlight firestarter keynot video of scottgu. http://www.silverlight.net/news/events/firestarter-labs/ http://blogs.msdn.com/b/katriend/archive/2010/12/06/silverlight-5-features-firestarter-keynote-and-sessions-resources.aspx http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/12/02/announcing-silverlight-5.aspx http://www.silverlight.net/news/events/firestarter/ http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/future/ Hope this will help you. • What if &ldquo;Microsoft&rdquo; were in our shoes? About Windows Phone

    - by Vijaya Malla
    This is what I think about Microsoft Windows Phone. If Microsoft were in our shoes looking at various phones available their configurations, memory, front facing cameras etc. Microsoft disappointed the USA customer base again by not getting Nokia Lumia 800. The Past: If we talk few years ago, few business people were on their Blackberry’s and few Gadget lovers were on crappy Windows OS devices. The world was all going right till Apple came with a revolutionary device iPhone, which completely changed our perception towards phone and how great a smartphone can be. It’s not just phone but the whole technology industry. The romantic appealing of the phone and smooth touch and feel of it made everyone to get one of those bad boys. The sales went up for not just Apple for AT&T too. Even though everyone complained about the signal strength of AT&T, everyone wanted to be on it because they have iPhones. All world wanted iPhone back then except Microsoft with few comments on how it is not going to be in market. But it did great and rocked the industry. A few years later with iPhone and Android taking over the smartphone market Microsoft realized that it should be in the game too. Worked on the design of it, and gave us the best Mobile OS ever. Everyone thinks that iOS is a great OS for phones but if you have touched a Windows Phone and use it for real then you will realize the strengths of it. so last year we welcomed Windows Phone 7 The Present : Windows Phone 7 has the fastest growing market. The phones are cheap, you can buy from any carrier out there. The phone became smarter and smarter with the recent update “Mango (7.5)” and with the collaboration with Nokia, Microsoft created a new eco-system for smartphones with the best smartphone hardware and best smartphone software. Everyone in the world was excited about the collaboration. As we fly over cloud 9 imagining about Nokia made Windows Phones we all heard a good news from Nokia “Nokia World”. Nokia showed the world what a best hardware making company can do with Windows Phone 7.5 OS. Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 took the spotlight. Everyone here in USA and all over the world wanted to own a Nokia Lumia 800 because of the design, software, proprietary apps from Nokia (maps, ESPN, drive and music). If USA market had Nokia Lumia 800, then it would have been the best step Microsoft and Nokia had ever made in their history of smartphone market. With all the numbers going to Android and IPhone, its not clear on why Microsoft/Nokia did not release Lumia 800 here in USA. Its unclear if Microsoft had learnt the lesson or not. if it had learnt the lesson I guess Microsoft needs to get the Nokia Lumia 800 to the USA. The Future: This is where we hope we get the best form Microsoft. I was an iPhone user, I used 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4 and then moved to Windows Phone and never felt so happy with my iPhones’. From the day when Nokia announced the partnership with Microsoft and said that they going to come up with a new Nokia windows phone, I was dreaming for my Nokia Phone. but looks like it is not going to happen any time soon. My thoughts about the Market :  Nokia has the biggest market base in the world. Even though people moved to Android or iPhone over the years in other parts of the world like India and China, people still love to use Nokia. Everyone who uses a Windows Phone now will wait for that day when Nokia Lumia comes to the USA but what either or both of the companies should do for a better market share is to make a very aggressive move with the hardware and bet on the devices. I am pretty sure that it will work. everyone here in the USA will like to have a dual core windows phone with front facing camera and all other crazy things that android/apple phones offer. I think we just have to wait for that day and hope that day comes soon. Love Microsoft and Nokia Thank you for reading.

  • Christian Radio Locator iPhone app

    - by Tim Hibbard
    For the last three months or so I've been working on an iPhone (and iPad) app in my spare time. It all started when I took the kids to Minneapolis and had a hard time finding radio stations to listen to on the trip. I looked in the App Store for an app that would use my GPS to show me Christian radio stations nearby, but there wasn't one. So I decided to build my own. Using public information from the FCC and a few other sources, I built a database in Google docs that contains the frequency for all Christian radio stations, where the tower is located and how far the tower can reach. I also included any streaming audio information and other contact information like Facebook or Twitter that I could find. Google spreadsheets publish in JSON format (yes, really) and Xcode can automatically deserialize JSON into a properly formatted entity. This is one area that Xcode is far superior to C#. In a just a few lines of code, I can have a list of in-memory strongly typed objects from a web-based JSON feed. To accomplish the same thing natively in .NET would be much more work and wouldn't feel nearly as clean when it was said and done. The snazzy icon shown above was built by my very talented wife. She hasn't yet provided any feedback on the app's user interface, which is why it is so plain and boring. I used a navigation view controller and EGO pull to refresh table view to construct the main window. Pulling down to refresh initiates a GPS lookup, which queries the database for radio stations in range (yes, you can pass parameters to Google spreadsheets and get a subset back in JSON). Pulling up on the table extends the range of the search and includes stations that may not be close enough to get clear audio. This feature is not that intuitive and the next version contains an update to that functionality. Tapping a cell will show a detail view that displays additional information about the station. The user can click to view the station on a map, click to listen to an online stream (if available) or click to see the station's Facebook or Twitter pages. Swiping back and forth on the table changes the information that is displayed on the right hand side of the table cell. It scrolls through the city where the tower is located, how far the phone is from the tower, the range of the tower and in the next version a signal strength indicator. This was pretty easy to implement once I figured out how to assign the gesture recognizer delegate.  Tapping and holding on a cell will jump the user to the map view screen. Which is pretty cool, but very hard for even a power user to discover. To tackle the issue of discoverability, the next version has a series of instructions displayed at the bottom of the screen to show the user the various shortcuts. Once the user has performed the swipes and long holds, the instructions disappear. I've learned a lot developing this app. Spending over a decade exclusively in .NET made the learning curve a bit steep, but once I learned the structure and syntax of Objective-C, I've learned to appreciate the power and simplicity of it. Here are a few screenshots. I would really appreciate any feedback and especially iTunes reviews. Technically it is open source and a smart googler could probably find it. I just haven't promoted it as open source.     Cross posted from timhibbard.com

  • Unable to suspend with FGLRX enabled

    - by schmmd
    I am unable to suspend in a fully updated (as of yesterday, 29 March 2011) Ubuntu 10.10 installation (kernel 2.6.35-28). Following is a list of some of my hardware: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Video: Radeon HD-567X-YNF3 Initially, when I went to either Suspend or Hibernate the machine would almost go into suspend, but it would never power down. Instead it would bounce back to the login screen. This was due to a problem with the USB3 ports being unable to suspend (noticed this in /var/log/kern.log). Disabling the USB3 ports in the BIOS fixed this issue. Now Suspend and Hibernate power down the machine. It successfully awakens from Hibernate. However, it will not return from suspend. The mouse and keyboard are not powered and the monitor has no signal. These devices are still not powered after a restart. I must power-cycle the machine. The pm-suspend log ends after it states that it entered suspend (i.e. there is no information any resume code running). I discovered that acpitool -s suspends the machine and resumes successfully exactly once. The second time the machine will not resume. I am not sure how these two tools handle suspend differently. UPDATE: the problem was introduced somewhere between 2.6.35-22 and 2.6.35-28. I have both kernels install presently. Suspend works fine with 2.6.35-22 but not with 2.6.38-28.

  • Problems Running GTA San Anread under wine

    - by Samyon Sahnovitch
    Although I can actually run San Andreas under wine first of all this is the menu: Well when I press the first menu item, I can play but there are some weird "bugs" with the graphics. The sky turns black, some 3d figures appearing on the screen etc. + the game is very slow. Intel built in graphic card so drivers are built in as well. When I run it on Windows - same computer everything works fine. Output from lspci if it will help. 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev 07) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) 00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 03) 00:1a.1 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 (rev 03) 00:1a.7 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 (rev 03) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 03) 00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 2 (rev 03) 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) 00:1d.1 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 03) 00:1d.2 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 03) 00:1d.3 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #6 (rev 03) 00:1d.7 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev 93) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation ICH9M LPC Interface Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801IBM/IEM (ICH9M/ICH9M-E) 4 port SATA Controller [AHCI mode] (rev 03) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.6 Signal processing controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) Thermal Subsystem (rev 03) 02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. • Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

    - by Bakhtiyor
    I have mailserver configure using dovecot+postfix+mysql and it was runnig fine in the server(Ubuntu Server). But during last week it stopped working correctly. It doesn't send email. When I try to telnet localhost smtp I'm connecting successfully but when I do mail from:<[email protected]> and hit Enter it hangs on, nothing happen. Having reviewed /var/log/mail.log file I've found out that probably(99%) the problem is on postfix when it is trying to connect to MySQL server. If you see the log file given below you can see that it says Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2). Nov 14 21:54:36 ns1 dovecot: dovecot: Killed with signal 15 (by pid=7731 uid=0 code=kill) Nov 14 21:54:36 ns1 dovecot: Dovecot v1.2.9 starting up (core dumps disabled) Nov 14 21:54:36 ns1 dovecot: auth-worker(default): mysql: Connected to localhost (mailserver) Nov 14 21:54:44 ns1 postfix/postfix-script[7753]: refreshing the Postfix mail system Nov 14 21:54:44 ns1 postfix/master[1670]: reload -- version 2.7.0, configuration /etc/postfix Nov 14 21:54:52 ns1 postfix/trivial-rewrite[7759]: warning: connect to mysql server localhost: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) Nov 14 21:54:52 ns1 postfix/trivial-rewrite[7759]: fatal: mysql:/etc/postfix/mysql-virtual-alias-maps.cf(0,lock|fold_fix): table lookup problem Nov 14 21:54:53 ns1 postfix/master[1670]: warning: process /usr/lib/postfix/trivial-rewrite pid 7759 exit status 1 Nov 14 21:54:53 ns1 postfix/cleanup[7397]: warning: problem talking to service rewrite: Connection reset by peer Nov 14 21:54:53 ns1 postfix/master[1670]: warning: /usr/lib/postfix/trivial-rewrite: bad command startup -- throttling Nov 14 21:54:53 ns1 postfix/smtpd[7071]: warning: problem talking to service rewrite: Success I tried netstat -ln | grep mysql and it returns unix 2 [ ACC ] STREAM LISTENING 5817 /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock. The content of /etc/postfix/mysql-virtual-alias-maps.cf file is here: user = stevejobs password = apple hosts = localhost dbname = mailserver query = SELECT destination FROM virtual_aliases WHERE source='%s' Here I tried to change hosts = 127.0.0.1 but it says warning: connect to mysql server 127.0.0.1: Can't connect to MySQL server on '127.0.0.1' (110) So, I am lost and don't know where else to change in order to solve the problem. Any help would be appreciated highly. Thank you.

  • eBay Leads Mobile Commerce

    - by David Dorf
    For the first time, more smartphones where shipped than PCs. This important milestone helps reinforce that retailers need a strong mobile commerce strategy. IDC reported that for the 4th quarter of 2010, manufacturers shipped 100.9 million devices versus 92.1 million PCs shipped. One early adopter for the retail industry is eBay, the popular online auction and shopping site. In July 2008 they released their first mobile app and have increased investments ever since. In 2002 they bought PayPal for use with its online channel, but its becoming a force in the mobile world as well. In June 2010 they acquired RedLaser, the popular barcode scanning mobile app. Both pieces of technology enhance the mobile experience, and are available to other retailers as well. More recently, in December 2010 they acquired Critical Path Software, the developer of their eBay, StubHub, and Shopping.com mobile applications. Taking their mobile development in-house was a clear signal that mobile commerce is important to their strategy. Pop on over the eBay Inc's mobile commerce stats page to see just how well they are doing. You can use the animated map to see where people are using the app on any given day, and you can compare sales of the different categories. eBay's hottest category is Cars & Trucks, garnering 16.5% of the total $2B (yes, billion) in mobile sales in 2010. To understand why that category is so large, let's look at the top 10 most expensive cars sold on eBay mobile in 2010: $240,001 Mercedes-Benz: SLR McLaren $209,888 Lamborghini: Gallardo $208,500 Ferrari: 430 $199,900 Lamborghini: Gallardo $189,000 Lamborghini: Murcielago $185,000 Ferrari: 430 $175,000 Porsche: 911 $170,000 Ferrari: 550 $160,000 Bentley: Continental, GT $159,900 Lamborghini: Gallardo eBay claims they sell 3-4 Ferraris on their mobile app each month. Yes, mobile commerce is not limited to small items. While I would wait to get home and fire up the PC, the current generation that has grown up with mobile phones has no issue satisfying their impulses. Dave Sikora of Digby told me he's seen people buy furniture sets, mattresses, and diamonds via their mobile phones. I guess mobile commerce is rapidly becoming the norm.
