• Internet Explorer 8 only running as process not application

  Internet Explorer 8 on XP SP3 starts without browser window. Task manager doesn't show application, but iexplore.exe is listed twice in process window. Process Explorer reports "no visible windows found for this process" when I try to "bring to front" in the iexplore.exe properties dialog. Have reinstalled (twice), full scanned with MBAM/MSSE/SpyBot etc, re-registered ieproxy.dll (another Google-inspired tip!), run without addons (-extoff switch), and still same problem. Recently uninstalled VMWare Player and wondered whether problem related to VM network adapter somehow, but Firefox still works perfectly. This is one of my home machines, not critical, and it is backed up, so I will restore if I have to. But any and all suggestions will be gratefully received. It would be nice to understand what might have happened, and perhaps others may benefit from any knowledge that comes to light.

• Getting VPN to work from Virtual PC

  Setup: Host is running Windows7. Virtual PC is a Windows Server 2008 running under VMWare workstation 6.5. From the Host I have a VPN to e.g. TFS and other resources. From the VPC I need to connect to e.g. a SQL server via the VPN. My problem is, that I cannot get a connection from the VPC. If I'm sitting on the corporate network, all is working fine (but then I don't have the VPN). From home - where the VPN is required - it does not work. I have two network adapters defined/configued. One as BRIDGED and one as Host Only. IF I change the one being BRIDTED to NATS I have no connectivity at all from the VPC. I have no problems connecting from my host to the VPC. Thanks.

• There is a commercial tool like Xen + Remus?

  Hello, I have a project where we need a completely redundant system like the one offered by Remus with a Xen virtualization system. I wondered if there is a system like this one built by VMWare or some other company because the project is a very critical one and we do not want to have to wait that a bug is fixed by "the community" and money is not a problem. What Remus does is to build a completely redundant system where you can shutdown one machine and the other continues the work where the other left it maintaining the network connections opened, etc Any hint? • Running a VM off of an external HD via USB

  Is it viable to run (i.e. reference the vmx/vhd directly from the mounted drive) a VM (vmware running Windows Seven) off of an external HD via USB? I mean, I know it's possible, but I guess I'm asking if USB provides enough bandwidth for normal usage... If so, are there any particular brands that may be better or worse? I know that ESATA would be a more viable setup, but my laptop doesn't have an ESATA port. Currently I use the VM to segregate all of my work development servers and software from my main machine; so I will be running all development servers and tools on the VM directly.

• VMware postfix server drops connection

  Our physical server godzilla forwards mails to our virtuall VMware server b4. They are on the same net. Often connection drops, we can't ping godzilla with our b4. That means mails from godzilla won't reach b4 and the mails will be in handed into the mailq. Sometimes it takes some hours and the issue will auto fix itself, b4 will wake up and the mail will be delivered. Another thing if we remotely ssh into the b4, the b4 will wake up and and receive any mailq mails from godzilla and deliver them. netadmin@b4:/var/log$ arp -a ?   I Have a VPS.And i on my vps installed vmware workstation version 9.now i have 3 valid ip's: XXX.152.193.66 XXX.152.193.101 XXX.152.193.103 Gateway: XXX.152.193.65 now tow ip's set in host and i want to 1 ip set on vm. network vm is bridge and set ip on vm but this ip from out of internal network not ping and in vm not ping to gateway. What can I do to solve this problem? my ip is unassigned and only set on vm and use bridge network mode.and gw,mask,dns is set.but not ping. i set this ip on host and without problems is worked, But I do not know why on vm not worked. my host OS Is Windows Server 2003 and firewall is off and RRAs(routing and remote access) For VPN service is Enable. Do not host or virtual machines to create a IP route?

• Is paravirtualization evil?

  I have an VMWare ESX Server v3.5 with a few virtualized Debian Lenny VMs (kernel 2.6.22 with vmi) running Apache Tomcat 5.5. I enabled paravirtualization, and Disk IO increased from about 240MB/s to 380MB/s, making me a happy admin. The problem now is that my apache tomcat becomes deadlocked during startup, running with 200% CPU (I have 2 CPUS assigned to the VM), and don't know how to get both: A stable system and a fast system. I somewhere heared that paravirtualization is legacy anyway and won't be available on newer ESX servers. Is there a replacement for this seemingly performance-improving option, or is it discontinued becauses it is just unstable? What is the state of paravirtualization? Should I ignore it completely? • SQL Server 2005 64bit on 16GB machine uses 3.6GB memory only

  Maximum server memory is set to the maxvalue AWE is disabled (should not be needed in 64 bit anyway) Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP2 It is a virtual server using VMWare If I look in Task Manager the sqlservr.exe process only uses about 3.6 GB of memory. Is that number not real? Shouldn't it attempt to use all available memory? If I run DBCC MEMORYSTATUS I get: VM Reserved 16670136 VM Committed 3640664 It looks like a memory limit I shouldn't be seeing in a 64 bit environment.. how can I get SQL2005 to use more memory?

  Hello. I have a physical disk with a small (60GB) partition containing my guest OS. The physical disk also contains a large (240GB) block of unpartitioned space. My vmdk is defined as a physical "individual partition". I want to convert the source physical "individual partition" vmdk into a local (file-based) vmdk. The command - vmware-vdiskmanager -r sourcevmdk targetvmdk -t 2 creates a 300GB vmdk that includes both the desired 60GB "individual partition" and the 240GB of useless unpartitioned space ! How can I create a local vmdk with just the individual partition?

• Is an I/O benchmark made for hardware an accurate assessment of a Windows VM's performance under vSphere 5?

  We support an enterprise application running on Windows Server 2008 R2. One of our customers has chosen to install to VMWare, and what I'm finding is that the VM's are relatively slow compared to hardware. Our product development team has advised that many VMs appear to run particularly slow on I/O benchmarks, which impact performance in production. I've tried the AttoSoft I/O benchmark and find that for smaller I/O blocks (1-32K) the VM I'm looking at is 25x slower than hardware and for larger I/O blocks (1-8MB) it's 10x slower. Is this a fair benchmark? If not, any suggestions for a fair test?

  I've a windows machine in which a linux server is run by a "VMWare player". From the windows machine, I want some folders to be mounted on the Linux virtual server. All this is done in a maven build (which is quite irrevelant here, in fact). From what I understand, to make these windows folders available as mountable ones, I have to do the following operations Share the folders as Samba ones using net share, this I have done. Access my virtual server and check which folders are already mounted (which seems to be doable using a less /etc/fstab), this I'll do soon Mount my samba shares using smbmount All that seems to my by far too hackish code. Could the same be done using ... say ... JMX/SNMP or any other high-level technology ?

• virtual machines: optimal host os to run Windows XP guest os?

  My department doesn't have the budget to upgrade my ailing Dell D620 laptop. However, I do have the option to buy my own personal computer, then use my company-issued ISO image to run Windows XP as my guest os using virtualbox or vmware. Therefore, last month, I bought an Acer AX3910-U3012 desktop that had Windows 7 as the host os (and 8G RAM). In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop. • Access a windows dynamic hard drive through a virtual machine on ubuntu?

  I have a Windows 7 OS and am thinking about transitioning to a dual boot set up with Ubuntu 12.04. From what I recall, it is not possible to natively access Dynamic Windows Partitions in a Linux OS. My thought is that it might be possible to have a virtual machine (running windows) installed within Ubuntu access the physical dynamic drive. The problem comes to whether VMWare can access the physical disk "high enough" to be able to mount it within the windows virtual machine as a native device or if it gets passed through from the native Linux OS. This is really the only thing holding me back from switching to a dual-boot set up as the dynamic disk is made up of 4 or 5 hard drives and I would very much like access to the data on both OS's. Alternatively, is there another solution for combining multiple physical hard drives into one virtual hard drive that would be readable on both OS's?

• Unable to login into CentOS

  I had setup a multinode cluster using CentOS with VMware yesterday. Today when I reboot the nodes I get the below error on startup. "there is a problem with the configuration server status 256 centOS" (/usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 ) I am unable to login as root or any user as the screen is frozen. The solutions online is to change the permissions for some tmp files. My problem is I am unable to access the terminal as I cannot login. Also on reboot I do not have any recovery options in CentOS. I only see command line GRUB. I am new to linux and Hadoop.Pls help asap.

  Has anyone tried to run vmconvert on a Windows 2008 64 bit server running Exchange 2007? Here is what I did. I stopped the Exchange processes and IIS and ran vmconvert. When I moved the new server to my vmware server 2.0 for windows and booted it. All seemed well except I could not send or receive email. All outbound was stuck in the queues. I was able to log in via OWA so that tells the network setup/NIC bindings were OK. Any ideas?

  suddenly my virtual centos server (5.6 on VMWare-VSphere) is not working... It started with the url not responding, nor the ip. (NO HTTP response, no ping). When I entered on the server via ssh to start troubleshooting I noticed that most of commands don't work anymore: top- machine hangs (it's not slow anyway) ps - machine hangs (funny enough apache server and web app are running and sending me emails) on some directory ls -l - machine hangs after first file, if ls l.txt the file show only the first file "more" command, also hangs on some file. So there are very little things I can try. I recovered my virtual machine from yesterday and before yesterday, and they show the same behaviour, it hangs on commands (but yesterday they were working). There is no firewall on the machine, there is on the host though. I can connect with ftp but I can't download files nor list directory apart the user top directory... Working hard right now, any idea appreciated

• How can I improve the rendering performance of this old DOS application?

  I have very old DOS Application (CadSoft Eagle - PCB Designer) and I want to work with it on my workstation with Windows 7. Then I install Windows 98 and that software into VmWare Player. But that software has serious problem with redrawing screen. It's very slow in comparison with my Intel Celeron 333MHz with Windows 98. I have same problem if I try to use DOSBox on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz). I also trying run this application directly on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz) with compatibility mod set to "Windows 98", but I get "(0Dh): General Protection Fault". Can someone give me good advice how I solve that?

• Windows Server 2008 freezes when I run programs as administrator

  I am working on a machine running Windows Server 2008. Every program I have tried to run (firefox, notepad, wordpad) works fine, but if I right-click on any item on the desktop or the start menu and select "Run as Administrator" it freezes. I can move the mouse around and open/close the start menu, but the items in the start menu do not change color when the mouse hovers over them. I googled for answers for some time but had no luck. Does anyone have any ideas that I could try? (Update: I forgot to mention that the machine is virtual and I am using VMWare Workstation. In order to answer the questions below, I have been going to the same snapshot of the system each time. This lets me start the system in the exact same place each time in order to answer your questions and test.) (Update: When I run any process as administrator and it freezes, I can start task manager, but I cannot see the new process (notepad, etc...) )

• Trouble loading an ISO

  I've created a boot disk and ISO image with paragon. I boot up the Virtual pc with the disk in and I get to my recovery page. When I am supposed to select an ISO image? My Virtual PC doesn't acknowledge any of my physical hard drives on my host PC. I've also tried copy/paste the files into my datastore and they do not show up. I've tried the option during the set up to start with the ISO but again I am not able to browse to my external hard drive that I have stored the ISO on. VMWare will acknowledge it and say that it is connected but I can't browse to it. Am I doing something wrong? I created the back up disk and ISO image on the external with paragon.

• Mac OS X Server 10.6.6 "disables" CPU in VMware Fusion [closed]

  Hello! I installed Mac OS X Server 10.6.0 in VMWare Fusion the other night and it worked perfectly, until I ran Software Update. I upgraded to 10.6.6 through the combo updater, and now when I start the VM it says: "The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. You will need to power off or reset the virtual machine at this point." I've switched the operating system in the options to OS X Server 32bit, 64bit, and even to Windows 7, and nothing has worked. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Turning a (dual boot) Ubuntu 9 into a virtual machine

  I have a dual boot box (Ubuntu 9 and Vista) and I'm about to upgrade Vista to Win 7. Being Ubuntu my main development environment, I'd like to use it as it is from the new environment via VirtualBox or VMWare. I know tools like clonezilla that backup entire drives; in my case, the linux partitions are distributed between several disks which in turn contain both linux and windows data. My intention is to use some backup tool (like Clonezilla if it fits) that allows me to ONLY backup the linux partitions distributed in several disks. Any hints ? Thanks in advance.

• SBS 2008 - Blank desktop while installing

  I'm trying to install SBS 2008 Standard Ed on a VMware Workstation 8. The installation runs fine up until some point where the desktop becomes completely blank. The server is still running and responds to CTRL+ALT+DELETE and CTRL+ESC, but there are no icons and no explorer-bar. I have tried to install it twice now and each time it comes to a halt at the same spot. Starting Taskmanager and launching explorer.exe only brings up the filemanager. Anyone have a clue to what it could be?

  I'd like to run a virtualized Ubuntu instance under Mac OS X (10.6). I've used VirtualBox in the past, but am looking for something that will be faster, and don't mind paying for either Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion. Does anyone have experience running Linux guests under either or both programs? I'm primarily interested in doing software development on the Linux guest installation, but I'm also very concerned with the performance and responsiveness the guest OS. I have a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro (2.66 GHz i5, 8 GB of RAM, NVIDIDA GeForce GT 330M). Thanks!

• CentOS running inside VMware as WebServer times out on outside connection [migrated]

  I have a CentOS machine running inside VMware, and I have got PHP and Apache set up on it, so if I open a browser (on the VM) and go to either localhost, or 192.168.0.3, I get a phpinfo page I made in /var/www/html/index.php, but, if on the host (Windows 7), in my browser I go to 192.168.0.3, it times out. I can ping the IP address from Windows and get a response, I just can't through the browser. Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do to get this working? This is my first time using a VM and I'm getting lost in the network settings.
