• From .psd to working HTML and CSS - help me suck less

  I am not much of a designer. My strength lies in coding. That said, I'm often forced into the role of "The Man," responsible for all aspects of site creation. So, that said I'm wondering if the pros can give me tips/solutions/links to tutorials to my main questions. Resolution. What should I aim for? What are the lower and upper edges I should be aware of? I know that systems like 960 Grid were popular recently. Is that the number I should still aim for? Slicing up a .psd - are there any tricks I should know? I've always found it difficult to get my slices pixel perfect. I'm also really slow at it. I must be looking at it wrong, or missing something fundamental. The same goes for text. Layouts are always filled with the classic "Lorem...", but I can never seem to get real content to fit quite as well on the screen. The advanced (to me, anyway) looking things, like a part of a logo/image overlaying what looks like a content area. How does one do that? How do layouts change/are informed by the decision to go fixed or liquid? Again, any tips/tricks/suggestions/tutorials you can share would be greatly appreciated.

• Questions about XNA

  I've read tons of different threads about XNA, but I still have some questions. First of all: I have 2 years of experience programming and C# is my main language, so XNA would fit perfectly for me, but I have some concerns. People mentioned that C# has a performance loss compared to C++. Is this true? XNA only supports DirectX 9. I found the ANX framework which is pretty similar to XNA but it is capable of DirectX 11. Would this be a good alternative ? Because I'm worried about the performance loss of C#, I searched for a C++ framework and found SFML. It's based on C++ but can be integrated into C#. I already have some experience with UDK, but I am really interested in creating more by myself ( lighting physics etc ). I didn't start yet, what would you recommend me to use / learn ? I am going to create a first person shooter (3D) and I have plenty of time for this. My aim is realtime lighting, realtime global illumination, image-based reflections etc. I want to develop for Windows. Edit: I found something interesting: OpenTK. It supports the latest version of OpenGL which is on the same level as DX11 (if my knowledge is correct). It makes use of mono.

• Is there a serious issue with setting the SUID bit on tcpdump?

  I'm running tcpdump on a remote machine, and piping the output to Wireshark on my local machine over SSH. In order to do this, I had to set the SUID bit on tcpdump. For background, the remote machine is an Amazon EC2 running "Amazon Linux AMI 2012.09". On this image, there is no root password, and it is not possible to log in as root. You can't use sudo without a TTY, and therefore you have to set the SUID. What are the practical risks of setting this bit on tcpdump? Is there any need to be paranoid? Should I unset it whenever I'm not capturing?

• What is the best software to capture full-screen 3h programming session in Windows?

  Hi, I'm planning a laboratorial experiment to assess behavior of groups when programming using some tools under study. For that, I'll need to capture their entire screen to disk. Mostly, what will be displayed is code, so I'm not to worried with image quality. However, it's paramount that the team is not able to stop the recording by accident, and the tool should be rebust enough to hold at least 3h of video. If possible, it would be nice for researchers in other rooms to "watch" the video as it is recording. Actually, this last requirement reminded me that I could use a VNC recording software, and install a VNC client in each laboratory computer. Anyway, what is your experience with this? Which software do you recommend? Thanks.

• How to re-configure graphics from Intel integrated to Intel / ATI switchable?

  There are lots of 'how to get switchable graphics to work' guides but I found none on how to configure a system for switchable graphics operation on Ubuntu from the ground up, nor explaining the current driver situation for particular computer models (integrated+discrete combinations). Example: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics My system being mature and on Intel integrated card also makes things complicated. System information: Ubuntu 12.04 amd64, installed clean with system configured to use only the integrated Intel card Lenovo Thinkpad T500 Intel GMA 4500MHD / ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 Current situation: Mature and up-to-date system with no configuration changes to what's given above. I've made a backup image of the system (Clonezilla) so regardless of what's written below let's assume it's our starting point. If something in What I have already tried is not clear you may as well diregard it. What I have already tried: Configuring BIOS to switchable graphics and: Installing Additional Hardware drivers - returned an error. Installing proprietary amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.run automatically - system starts to 'low-graphics mode'. Tried fixing as per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#Manually_installing_Catalyst_12.6.2C_special_case_for_Intel.2BAC8-ATI_hybrid_graphics Got lost, gave up. Please note that while configuring BIOS for integrated graphics only is pretty straightforward, configuring for switchable graphics is not.

• Windows Security Center Service is missing

  I am trying to fix a Windows 7 machine here that has been infected with all kinds of Malware. I have removed all of them as far as I can see but I am stumped by one last task. One little bugger managed to remove the Windows Security Center service from the list of Windows services. So I cannot start it or set to automatically start. At the moment I cannot get the Windows firewall to turn on or any anti-virus software. The security center shows the following image when I try: Does anyone know how to add this back to the list of services so I may set it to start. I don't have a backup of the registry for this computer (it's not mine). Many thanks TT

• Making a cracked or activated windows uncracked

  I have a pc which has windows 7 license but I installed windows from an image i downloaded and it is already activated. for validating genuine microsoft, i need to entet my own product key but the necessary activation tools do not exist in my windows folder. What do? I googled stuff but because the keywords are too broad I couldn't find a useful tool DAZ doesn't work, activation button doesn't show up. When I enter my original key to Windows Anytime Upgrade, I get this error When I attempt using slmgr, I get this error I used sfc /scannow Now slmgr is existing, I entered slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (replacing X es with the cd key) the operation successful. Now I have installed Microsoft Security essentials, which means the problem is solved. • Good Free Backup Tool - with provisos

  I have seen some Backup Questions around. But they are not quite what I am looking for. I would like to have a back up of my entire hard drive (to an external drive). I would like it to be the kind that has a base backup then just backs up the changes since the last backup. I would like it to be able to have a fully restorable image of my hard drive (not just key files). Lastly I would like it to be free (or super cheap). (The above requirements are important, but I will have to drop them if they up the price as my boss will not pay for them.) I have a Solid State Hard Drive 250 GB backing up to a 1TB external hard drive using Windows XP.

• Need help with Microsoft Access 07 & Reports

  I'm finding it difficult to get MS reporting working to what I'd like to show. What I'm trying to do is: a) In my database store a URL file (HTTP external file), that is a .jpeg. I'd like to use that URL to call the image on the report sheet. I have tried to use 'Control source' on the data panel, but with no success. Any way I can get Dynamic Images to show up on each database. Also, I have a couple of Relational Databases. One Defines Values: For Example: DefinePets('petID','Name of Pet') The other one links the Main DB with the 'DefinePets' database. Eg: connect('petID','mainID','extraFeild') I'd like my report to Go into the "connect" Table, where the the currently viewed Record Value = mainID, then find petID and return Name of Pet. There is a many to many link between definePets and the main Table. (Therefore connect is joining them up) Or is that too much to ask from a simple package like Access?

  Helo i wanted to restore os from my recovery drive. but because of some issues i could not do that. so i had my recovery dvds which i made when i bought laptop. these are three dvds. so i inserted one dvd and installation started. and it asked for second dvd and i inserted but it is not taking it. once i did installtion with this three dvds but now it is not taking second dvd. So because of this type of failure i install trial version of windows 7 and take my backup. after it i install Gateway recovery Management. and it is not working. when i am repair my computer it is not showing that Image of recovery partition. • selective backup script in bash

  Hi, I've been using this simple command (that's all I can do :) to backup the whole tree from my user data in NAS server for a year. cp -r /STORAGE /BACKUP-STORAGE/YYYY-MM-DD Unfortunately, after a year of service. My user start filling the spaces with lot of photo and cliparts (jpg, gif, bmp) And that start to make my backup process get much slower. The space is also a big issue. Now I no longer have enough space for a week-long daily backup set. I think I want to change from backup everything to backup only non-image data. How can I exclude jpg, gif, and bmp from the backup ? It's quite easy with DOS XCOPY command, but I really have no idea how to do that in bash. Thanks

  I am a beginner in Android and I want to create a very simple 2D game. I've already programmed a Tic-Tac-Toe game. The drawing of the game board and connecting it with my game and input logic was quite difficult (as it was done separately, canvas drawing, calculating positions, etc). By now I figured out that there must be a simpler way. All I want is a simple grid; something like this: http://www.blelb.com/deutsch/blelbspots/spot29/images/hermannneg.gif. The edges should be visible and black, and each cell editable, containing either an image or nothing, so I can detect if the player is on that cell or not, move it... Think of it as Chess or something similar. Searching the internet during the last days, I am a bit overwhelmed of all the different options. After all, I think Gridview or Gridlayout is what I am searching for, but I'm still stuck. I hope you can help me with some good advice or maybe a link to a nice tutorial. I have checked several already, and none were exactly what I was searching for.

  If you ask the question “What is the most fun activity?” to school or college kids, most of the kids would say “bunking classes”. Many of us are grown up bunking classes in the name of stomachache, relatives marriage, high fever, rain or some other reason. Here is a wonder kid who is an exception of regular school kids. Mohammed Omar, a 17 year Indian school boy, never skipped his classes for the past 14 years. His attendance records shows 100% for all the 14 years of school he attended so far and it’s an unbelievable track record. Omar lives in Kanpur, a suburban in Uttar Pradesh with parents and a younger brother. He attended school even when the area where he lives was once flooded, had high temperature. When flooded and motor vehicles were not able to run on the streets he loaned a bicycle from neighbors. When he was on high temperature he just popped a tablet and headed towards the school.  Whatever may be the adverse situation, he just found a way to attend school instead of bunking. He recently applied for Guinness Book of World Records. The determination of the boy is incredible and inspiration to many young. • ubuntu 12.04 not responding after software update

  Yesterday, I did a software update and since then the system became unusable. To be more precise, I login and then I see only the background image without any bars, images etc.. This happened after updating the system. Please find here the relevant part /var/log/apt/history.log. I'm running 64 bit 12.04 distribution on nVidia. The 2-3 first restarts after the upgrade it was complaining about compiz/unity crashes and then the situation is as described above. I would be the most grateful of you could help me on this. • How can I find the right UV coordinates for interpolating a bezier curve?

  I'll let this picture do the talking. I'm trying to create a mesh from a bezier curve and then add a texture to it. The problem here is that the interpolation points along the curve do not increase linearly, so points farther from the control point (near the endpoints) stretch and those in the bend contract, causing the texture to be uneven across the curve, which can be problematic when using a pattern like stripes on a road. How can I determine how far along the curve the vertices actually are so I can give a proper UV coordinate? EDIT: Allow me to clarify that I'm not talking about the trapezoidal distortion of the roads. That I know is normal and I'm not concerned about. I've updated the image to show more clearly where my concerns are. Interpolating over the curve I get 10 segments, but each of these 10 segments is not spaced at an equal point along the curve, so I have to account for this in assigning UV data to vertices or else the road texture will stretch/shrink depending on how far apart vertices are at that particular part of the curve.

  Today, I have one very simple question based on following image. A full disclaimer is that I have no idea why it is like that. I tried to reach out to few of my friends who know a lot about SQL Server but no one has any answer. Here is the question: If you go to server properties and click on Advanced you will see the following screen. Under the Parallelism section if you noticed there are four options: Cost Threshold for Parallelism Locks Max Degree of Parallelism Query Wait I can clearly understand why Cost Threshold for Parallelism and Max Degree of Parallelism belongs to Parallelism but I am not sure why we have two other options Locks and Query Wait belongs to Parallelism section. I can see that the options are ordered alphabetically but I do not understand the reason for locks and query wait to list under Parallelism. Here is the question for you – Why Locks and Query Wait options are listed under Parallelism section in SQL Server Advanced Properties? Please leave a comment with your explanation. • How best to set up MDT developement and production?

  What's your MDT 2010 test and prod setup? What do you consider best practice? Is it best to use linked deployment shares, and replicate from development to production when testing is complete? What about backing out, if something breaks? Does anyone run MDT shares in DFS, or is there no support in the WinPE boot image for DFS shares? Or what about moving the production share name from one deployment share to another, as you add and test more OS versions, drivers, attributes, etc?

• Windows 7 backup to 3TB Seagate external drive got 0x8078002A error [migrated]

  I'm using the Windows 7 backup and restore utility to create a system image and personal file backup to an external Seagate GoFlex 3TB disk. I got the following error: One of the backup files could not be created. Details: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Error code: 0x8078002A I searched all over the internet and found these two related discussions (discussion 1 and discussion 2). Note the 1st discussion is for a Western Digital drive, which seem to have a solution with the WD Quick Formatter tool. But I downloaded that software and it cannot detect my Seagate drive. The 2nd discussion is directly relevant but it does not offer a solution. I've spent days on this and am at a loss... Please help if you know what to do to make it work! Thank you!

• Problem with Skype in Snow Leopard

  Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro from Leopard to Snow Leopard I have always had problems with Skype. When I start a video chat, Skype tells me that my camera is not installed on the machine (even though it clearly is). After searching the internet I have found some 'solutions' but none of them work. After trying them, it makes my camera feed appear as a blank, green image. How can I get Skype to function with the built in iSight with Snow Leopard properly? is there any body else face this problem?

• FileOpenPicker/FileSavePicker doesn't allow *.* wildcard file associations

  On Twitter, Matthias Jauernig commented that the FileOpenPicker and FileSavePicker doesn't allow *.* wildcard file associations. I was relaxed about this and wrote back that it was related to sandboxing implying it was a "good thing", however as Matthias commented back, perhaps it's not.In Metro-style the sandboxing works that if something gives you a file (e.g. the picker, or a share operation), you can access it regardless of where on the system. If you find the file yourself, you have to declare the type.The reason why I think it's related to sandboxing is because if you work with files programmatically you have to be explicit about the file types. This is to stop malware that you think is only interested in - say .PDF files, scanning and uploading any .EML files that it can find on the machine. It follows then on the pickers that restriction would continue. It allow's the retail store team to validate that an app is likely to behave itself. If it's an app that works with images, locking down the picker so that it can only access image file types makes sense.However Matthias mentioned that he has an app that should allow files of any arbitrary file. That fits more into the "if the user selects it, it must be OK" camp than the "programmatic scanning" camp. So now I'm left wondering why the picker doesn't allow any type to be selected.I think then maybe the decision comes down to simplicity. A lot of the decisions in Metro-style design relate to ideas about "zero intimidation". Allow the user to select any file is too much like Old Windows, and not enough like Reimagined Windows. What happens in Matthias's app if the user selects Explorer.exe as the file he or she wants to work with? I guess it's fine if you expect your user to know what they're doing (Old Windows), but not so fine if you're expecting a three year old to work with it (Reimagined Windows).
