• Plugged in, not charging&ndash;Windows 7

  Just a quick post on something I ran into lately with my Dell Precision M4500 laptop (monster laptop!).  I noticed the little icon in the system tray for the power options was stating that it was “plugged in, not charging”.  I don’t know why it was stating this, but I quickly found a fix for it on the net. I found the fix in this forum on CNET.  Here’s the fix: In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below. 1. Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager . 2. Expand the Batteries category. 3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall . WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver. 4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes . Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes . Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.   And it did work.

• Another Linq to SQL product, Enzo Multitenant Framework

  An open source library and full product have been developed for transparently splitting large tables across several databases for performance, similar to database table partitioning.  It is all handled along with the Linq to SQL framework, and looks pretty slick, I will be reviewing the product shortly.  It looks mostly transparent to the developer!  There are other capabilites worth a look.  This looks like it works for azure as well. • BUILD 2013 &ndash; Summary

While I Know that some people were disappointed that Microsoft didn't Say more about the XBox One, I was pleased with the information we got for developing Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone applications. Add to that the ability to pick the brains of MVPs and product team members was really worth the price of admission. It is going to take a while to digest all of the material and weeks to go through all the videos. In the end there is a lot of information that is going to improve my projects.  I look forward to what Microsoft has coming next seeing every one at the next BUILD. • Best practices for Persona development

  Over the years, I have created a lot of Personas, I've co-authored a new method for creating them, and I've given talks about best practices for creating your own, so when I saw a call for participation in the OpenPersonas project, I was intrigued. While Jeremy and Steve were calling for persona content, that wasn't something I could contribute -- most of the personas I've created have been proprietary and specific to particular domains of my employers. However, I felt like there were a few things I could contribute: a process, a list of interview questions, and what information good personas should contain. The first item, my process for creating data-driven personas, I've posted as a list of best practices. My next post will be the list of 15 interview questions I use to guide the conversations with people whose data will become the personas. The last thing I'll share is a list of items that need to be part of any good persona artifact -- and if I have time, I'll mock them up in a template or two.

This part of my life is called “Looking for a Job”. With no form of experience whatsoever, getting a job at a well renowned IT company is something that every IT student dreams about. CV: v, Application form: v, interviews: v. Acceptance Call, “Lesi I’m pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to be part of the Oracle Graduate Program for 2012”. Life would never again be the same. Being Part of the Graduate Program Going into the Graduate program, I felt like a baby seeing candy for the first time. The Program gave me the platform to not only break in to the workplace but also to help launch my career. Over the next 3 months, I went through various trainings / workshops / events / coaching / mentorship sessions. Like a construction worker building a solid foundation for a beautifully designed architecture, a clear path to build my career was set. With training out the way, it was now time to start working closely with my team. For the rest of the year, it was all about selling. Sales, Pipeline, Forecasting and numbers soon became the common words in my career. As the saying goes, “once a sales man, always a sales man”. There was no turning back now, a career in sales was the new hustle in my life. I worked closely with my mentor & coach (Ibrahim) who was heading up Zambia and Malawi. This was to be one of my best moments in the program as I started engaging with customers and getting some hands on experience in the field. By the end of the program all the experience, hard work, training and resources came in handy as I was now ready and fully groomed to be a sales rep. Life after the Graduate Program I’m proud to say that now I’m a Territory Manager, heading up Malawi, selling Technology, Middleware & Applications across all industries. I’m part of the Transition Cluster Team, a powerful team headed by the seasoned Senior Director. As a Territory Manager my role is to push for coverage, to penetrate the market by selling Oracle from end- to- end to all accounts in Malawi. I now spend my days living out of a suitcase, moving from hotel to hotel, chasing after business in all areas of Malawi. It’s the life of a Sales Man and I’m enjoying every minute of it. I’m truly fortunate and grateful to have been part of such a wonderful graduate program. I owe my Sales career to the graduate program, and I truly hope that the program will continue to develop and to groom new talent amongst the youth of this world. • Hospital fined $1m for Patient Data Breach

  As an illustration of the potential cost of accidental breaches, the US Dept of Health and Human Services recently fined a hospital $1m for losing documents relating to some of its patients. Allegedly, the documents were left on the subway by a hospital employee. For incidents in the UK, several local government bodies have been fined between £60k and £100k. Evidently, the watchdogs are taking an increasingly firm position.

• Global Day of Coderetreat

• Comments in code

  It is a good practice to leave comments in your code.  Knowing what the hell you were thinking or later intending can be salvation for yourself or the poor soul coming behind you.  Comments can leave clues to why you chose one approach over the other.  Perhaps staged re-engineering dictated that coding practices vary.One thing that should not be left in code as comments is old code.  There are many free tools that left you version your code.  Subversion is a great tool when used with TortoiseSVN.  Leaving commented code scattered all over will cause you to second guess yourself, all distraction to the real code, and is just bad practice.If you have a versioning solution, take time to go back through your code and clean things up.  You may find that you can remove lines and leave real comments that are far more knowledgeable than having to remember why you commented out the old code in the first place.

• Help file formats - MSHA files v CHM files

  Recently I was tasked with producing a help file from a C#/WPF/Crystal Reports application using Sandcastle. I have previously blogged about the problems in doing that and the change that is going into the next version of Sandcastle that allows the vagaries of Crystal (this missing BusinessObjects.Licensing.KeycodeDecoder) to be handled. At http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/devdocs/thread/0b110502-f5bb-4c56-96a5-4347a2a7a68a/, I describe how I tried each of the formats. Two of the formats could not be built and the error messages were not exactly helpful as to the cause. These two formats turned out to be obsolete. The MSHA format worked but was not suitable for a standalone application, so that left me with the older CHM format. I therefore asked on that thread "will the HTML Help 1 (CHM) format continue to be supported for the foreseeable future?".Rob Chandler, MVP in help systems, gave a very helpful answer, to the effect that there is not yet a replacement for the CHM format.

• Innovation for Retailers

  One of my main objectives for this blog is to point out emerging technologies and how they might apply to the retail industry.  But ideas are just the beginning; retailers either have to rely on vendors or have their own lab to explore these ideas and see which ones work.  (A healthy dose of both is probably the best solution.)  The Nordstrom Innovation Lab is a fine example of dedicating resources to cultivate ideas and test prototypes. The video below, from 2011, is a case study in which the team builds an iPad app that helps customers purchase sunglasses in the store.  Customers take pictures of themselves wearing different sunglasses, then can do side-by-side comparisons. There are a few interesting take-aways from their process.  First, they are working in the store alongside employees and customers.  There's no concept of documenting all the requirements then building the product.  Instead, they work closely with those that will be using the app in order to fully understand what's needed.  When they find an issue, they change the software onsite and try again.  This iterative prototyping ensures their product hits the mark.  Feels like Extreme Programming if you recall that movement. Second, they have time-boxed the project to one week.  Either it works or it doesn't, and either way they've only expended a week's worth of resources.  Innovation always entails failure, and those that succeed are often good at detecting failure quickly then adjusting.  Fail fast and fail often. Third, its not always about technology.  I was impressed they used paper designs to walk through user stories and help understand the needs of the customer.  Pen and paper is the innovator's most powerful tool. Our Retail Applied Research (RAR) team uses some of these concepts in our development process.  (Calling it a process is probably overkill.)  We try to give life to concepts quickly so the rest of organization can help us decide if we're heading the right direction.  It takes many failures before finding a successful product.
