    I have a Ruby on Rails app that needs process many background jobs simultaneously: anywhere from 5-6 at a time to up to 50-60 at a time depending on the time of day. Right now my app is running on Heroku, which charges $.05/hour per worker, regardless of how much CPU or memory the worker is using. This is costing me a boatload each month... up to $1200/mo. Are there any hosts that will allow me to do what I'm doing for significantly cheaper?

    I'm trying to create a check constraint such as CHECK Type IN (N'Create', N'Remove') for an enumeration's value. Sqlite complains about this syntax and only accepts CHECK Type IN ('Create', 'Remove'). The main database will be Sql Server 2005, but I use sqlite's in memory database for unit tests. Is there any way to get sqlite to recognise the national language (N) prefix? Alternatively, is there an easy way when using FluentNHibernate to adapt an nvarchar constant to match the database's dialect?

    I am using the W3C XHTML validator to check my sites and I am getting some errors on pages with FBML. Most of the cause of such errors is the "&" character. Since FBML values and attributes are generated on the fly, I have no way to encode the character properly before displaying it. Question: Is there a way for me to tell Facebook Connect to render the mark up properly? Thanks.

    are there any alternatives to Xpath ? need to locate and extract specific element's texts for web scraping project. xpath seem pretty limited against layout changes on web pages. slight shuffle, and xpath no longer works. also different browsers have different Xpaths as i discovered. Firefox automatically adds tbody after table, while IE doesn't and so on.

  • Check to see if file transfer is complete

    We have a daily job that processes files delivered from an external source. The process usually runs fine without any issues but every once in a while we have an issue of attempting to process a file that is not completely transferred. The external source SCPs these files from a UNIX server to our Windows server. From there we try to process the files. Is there a way to check to see if a file is still being transferred? Does UNIX put a lock on a file while SCPing it that we could check on the Windows side?

The problem is that when I read small chunks of data (in the order of KBs) multiple times, each read take the same amount of time as the previous one. How can I know if the disk is being accessed to fulfill my request or whether the request is being fulfilled from main memory (page cache) in calls after the first one.

My processing would be easier if I could use the File.ReadAllLines method but I'm not sure what is the maximum size of the file that could be read with this method without reading by chunks.     Given: An application that accesses a directory of files: some plain text, some binary files that adhere to a particular NSCoding implementation, and perhaps other binary files it simply doesn't understand how to process. I want to be able to figure out which of the files in that directory adhere to my NSCoding class, and I'd prefer not to have to fall back on the naïve approach of loading the entirety of each file into memory, attempting to unarchive each.     When I try to get all my "likes" (formerly fan pages) on Facebook Graph API, sometimes it returns me an empty set: { "data": [ ] } I tried with https://graph.facebook.com/me/likes?access_token=MY_ACCESS_TOKEN and with graph.facebook.com/vinch/likes?access_token=MY_ACCESS_TOKEN but the result is exactly the same (empty). Any idea of what it can be? I need it to know if a user likes (is fan of) a specific page.

This is concise and convenient, but does it have any memory and/or performance implications compared to explicitly calling the helpers that each controller actually needs?
