• Good ways to earn income as a self employed developer

  I was just wondering if people could share their experiences and ideas about generating / earning income from a software product or service they have personally developed. To me this seems like a good way to earn a living while doing what we love (programming) and working on projects and problems which interest us. Ie, NOT boring bank or marketing software etc 9-5 all week... Some ideas I have are things like web 2.0 style sites (Facebook,Youtube,Twitter,Digg) etc etc... - These can be very very profitable as we all know but can take years to take off. Are there ways to survive until/if this does happen? Mobile applications. Iphone, Google Android and the new up coming Nintendo DS app store. These have good potential to make it easy to find a market for your application and make selling it easy. Shareware/PC software. A bit 80's and 90's and you kind of need to be a salesman/marketer to sell it but its the only other thing I can think of. Also im not talking about doing freelance work. Im only interested in idea's you can come up with and develop your self (not other peoples ideas or problems which are you are payed to develop). Things that a sole developer or at the most 2 developers could work on and have good potential for high returns on investment (in terms of time) would be great. PS, I wish I thought of stackoverflow!

• dynamic searchable fields, best practice?

  I have a Lexicon model, and I want user to be able to create dynamic feature to every lexicon. And I have a complicate search interface that let user search on every single feature (including the dynamic ones) belonged to Lexicon model. I could have used a serialized text field to save all the dynamic information if they are not for searching. In case I want to let user search on all fields, I have created a DynamicField Model to hold all dynamically created features. But imagine I have 1,000,000,000 lexicon, and if one create a dynamic feature for every lexicon, this will result creating 1,000,000,000 rows in DynamicField model. So the sql search function will become quite inefficient while a lot of dynamic features created. Is there a better solution for this situation? Which way should I take? searching for a better db design for dynamic fields try to tuning mysql(add cache fields, add index ...) with current db design

  I was tasked to conduct my first interview and would like to pose my question to this world for both their feedback on my question and also on their solutions. Question: I have a legacy system with users and files, the info of all files pertaining to a user are stored on a flat file. I want to upgrade this system by storing all info on a db, design tables, and create a C# system that will populate the new db as well as ftp the files to a new path. Define the desgin consideration and develop a prototype. Note: We are looking more for what design one would use and why rather than code that compiles. Already finished writing the basic game logic,a CLI logic. My design includes several classes like, Dealer,Player,Table,Card,Casino and some others.. Enums for Cards and suite. I have read about MVC as a theoretical concept, familiar with the name 'design patters'(no understanding whatsoever as to how they are implemented) Everywhere I am suggested to learn while writing some real code.So I started off with this... • a completely decoupled OO system ?

  To make an OO system as decoupled as possible, I'm thinking of the following approach: 1) we run an RMI/directory like service where objects can register and discover each other. They talk to this service through an interface 2) we run a messaging service to which objects can publish messages, and register subscription callbacks. Again, this happens through interfaces 3) when object A wants to invoke a method on object B, it discovers the target object's unique identity through #1 above, and publishes a message on the message service for object B 4) message services invokes B's callback to give it the message 5) B processes the request and sends the response for A on message service 6) A's callback is called and it gets the response. I feel this system is as decoupled as practically possible, but it has the following problems: 1) communication is typically asynchronous 2) hence it's non real time 3) the system as a whole is less efficient. Are there any other practical problems where this design obviously won't be applicable ? What are your thoughts on this design in general ?

  Suppose I have some needs to do the following (This is just some imaginative code for discussion of the C++ standard, thus I won't discuss why I design it this way, so don't bother me something like: your design is wrong.) T* ptr = new T; shared_ptr<T> p(ptr); shared_ptr<T> q(ptr, SomeDeleterThatDoesnotDeleteButDoSomeOtherStuff()); Suppose the logic guarantees that p or some of its copies lives longer than any copies of q, so practically there won't be any problem. My question is, is it forbidden by C++ standard, e.g. explicitly stated as UB by C++ standard, that different shared_ptr counters share the same address? Thanks.

• How to setup Expression Blend 3 add-in window at certain position ?

  For example in Sketchflow add-in there is ApplicationFlowPane (derrived from PrototypingPane) which registers itself using IWindowService like this: service.RegisterPalette(this.PaletteRegistryName, this, this.Caption, this.KeyBinding); But i can't see where it is defined that it is docked on bottom pane. Before someone replies that it's at: %AppData%\Microsoft\Expression\Blend3\Workspaces No it's not there because those files do not exists at first run. The question is how can i put my window at certain position with Expression Blend 3 plug-in api ? update 1: It seems that to achive what i want i have to change design.xaml (where workspaces are defined) which is loaded from satellite assembly Microsoft.Expression.Blend.resources.dll (method load in class FrameworkPackage in Microsoft.Expression.Blend.dll). But since this dll is strongly named i can't change it. So now the question is. Is there any other way I can change Design Workspace at runtime ?

• Can I attach a .NET TraceListener to an externally running process?

  I am developing an application scheduling program that will run other applications using System.Diagnostics.Process. The external applications are of various types (some .NET and some not). For those external apps that have trace logging enabled, is there a way that I can attach the tracelistener of the parent/calling application to listen to and record all the trace output from the child/called application to the parent application's trace output? This is not primarily for debugging purposes. This is more to track trace output from all the various scheduled applications by collecting it into one place as much as possible. The scheduler app is still in the early design stages, but will be .NET, and I'm trying to clear up potential design issues before I get into it too far.

• Custom ListView Row, can no longer select rows...

When I comment out "exampleView: Spanish.CustomListItemView" I can select rows, but they are no longer formatted properly. Why can I no longer select rows when I use exampleView?

• .net, C# Interface between Business Logic and DAL

  I'm working on a small application from scratch and using it to try to teach myself architecture and design concepts. It's a .NET 3.5, WPF application, and I'm using Sql Compact Edition as my data store. I'm working on the business logic layer, and have just now begun to write the DAL. I'm just using SqlCeComamnds to send over simple queries and SqlCeResultSet to get at the results. I'm starting to design my Insert and Update methods, and here's the issue - I don't know the best way to get the necessary data from the BLL into the DAL. Do I pass in a generic collection? Do I have a massive parameter list with all the data for the database? Do I simply pass in the actual business object (thus tying my DAL to the conrete stuff in the BLL?). I thought about using interfaces - simply passing IBusinessObjectA into the DAL, which provides the simplicity I'm looking for without tying me TOO tightly to current implementations. What do you guys think?

• Cocoa touch - creating view template for iPad

  Hi, This is kinda a hard question to describe. I'm just starting to make an iPad app. Now with the amount of real estate I have, I'm planning to have different but similar "views" to populate the space. (might be easier to think a newspaper site, where many of the columns are similar) I would like to create a "view template" so I can reuse the view in the different spots. Is it possible to design the view template in Interface Builder? (meaning I design the UIView in Interface Builder and then somehow I can just do [window addSubview:viewController.viewTemplate1]; multiple times? If so how would I load that view template in the different places? If you know of an example code / tutorial that does something similar, that would work too. Thanks, Tee

• Best way to merge two identical ASPNET web sites?

  We have two websites which only diference is in the design (Diferent images, styles, layouts..etc) but the web structure of files and cs code is the same so we want to simplify its manteinance... The actual structure would be: DefaultA.aspx DefaultA.aspx.cs DefaultB.aspx DefaultB.aspx.cs LoginA.aspx LoginA.aspx.cs LoginB.aspx LoginB.aspx.cs One idea would be changing the design differencies at runtime depending of the origin website, but we dont like much this because performance, abstraction in designing them and url confusion... Another one is sharing the cs (both aspx inheriting and using the same cs) file but we never have done or seen it done in any website before so we wonder if its a good aproach... What do you think? Any other way better in terms of performance vs development-ease?

• Inheriting from multiple classes in Java (and possibly not using interface)

  So, let's say we have classes A, B and C and I want to inherit from all those classes and have another class called D, it can be done using implements and interfaces in Java. But let's say we don't want to use this simple solution, would you be able to inherit class D from classes A, B and C in any other way in Java? (This question might be related to design patterns, it has been brought up after challenging my colleague at lunch discussing design patterns) I don't think there is any other way to have multiple inheritance in Java other than using multiple interfaces.

Hell, when I was 17 I was asked to help design an adult website that I would not legally be able to view. After talking to a few Software Engineers and Flash Developers I have heard that there is a lot of interesting work in the adult industry for those who like to work with new technologies. Have any of you worked for a company dealing with adult/pornographic content? Did you enjoy it? If you haven't would you ever consider it? More than anything I find it interesting to see how others would view the offer, whether you would be afraid to list it on a CV/Resume, how interesting the work would be, how you think future employees would see you and whether you believe that they would judge you for working in a dirty industry.

• how to force onLayout

  Hi i want to design a custom View where I need to recalculate my layout and redraw when user changes something. To force a onLayout(), the only solution that works for me until now is: onLayout(true, 0, 0, 0, 0); invalidate(); Of course that gives me a lint error and I have to add a @SuppressLint("WrongCall"). So there must be a smarter solution. Calls of forceLayout or requestLayout didn't work. Probably they only put a request on a stack but don't react immediately. As my view has no child elements and I do the drawing inside all by myself, could be I'm bypassing some Android design guides and abusing some principles. Can live with the lint error but maybe someone already found a solution. Thanks!

• How to delete ProgIDs from other user accounts when uninstalling from Windows?

  I've been investigating "how should a modern windows c++ application register its file types" with Windows (see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2828637/c-how-do-i-correctly-register-and-unregister-file-type-associations-for-our-ap). And having combed through the various MSDN articles on the subject, the summary appears to be as follows: The installer (elevated) should register the global ProgID HKLM\Software\Classes\my-app.my-doc[.version] (e.g. HKLM\Software\Classes\TextPad.text) The installer also configures default associations for its document types (e.g. .myext) and points this to the aforementioned global ProgID in HKLM. NOTE: a user interface should be provided here to allow the user to either accept all default associations, or to customize which associations should be set. The application, running standard (unelevated), should provide a UI for allowing the current user to set their personal associations as is available in the installer, except that these associations are stored in HKCU\Software\Classes (per user, not per machine). The UN-installer is then responsible for deleting all registered ProgIDs (but should leave the actual file associations alone, as Windows is smart enough to handle associations pointing to missing ProgIDs, and this is the specified desired behavior by MSDN). So that schema sounds reasonable to me, except when I consider #4: How does an uninstaller, running elevated for a given user account, delete any per-user ProgIDs created in step #3 for other users? As I understand things, even in elevated mode, an uninstaller cannot go into another user's registry hive and delete items? Or can it? Does it have to load each given user hive first? You know, some guy has a blog, and he spent the last six months learning about one these things and desiging a program centered around that concept and then he goes on and on about it like its better than sliced bread. I read all of this crap and I wonder, whatever happened to simple logical programming? Not self-absorbed huge frameworks of design patterns and mvc and whatever else you can think of... just simple linear programming, perhaps a few classes to encapsulate things here and there.

• Creating a Non-Databound Report in Winforms

  I am using Visual Studio 2008 and all the components that come with it as well as Infragisitics for Winforms. I need to design a label that will print to a label printer. None of the controls are databound and will most likely be set in code eg/Label.Text = "My Heading"; as there will be minimal information on the label. One piece of information is a barcode so I need the functionality to do that, I assume I can just set the font of the label to barcode and it will do its thing. Can I just add a Crystal Report to a form design it, set the label text properties in code, tell it what printer to print to and then call report.Print(); I've had a quick go and seems not as easy as I thought.
