  • how do I paste text to a line by line text filter like awk, without having stdin echo to the screen?

    I have a text in an email on a windows box that looks something like this: 100 some random text 101 some more random text 102 lots of random text, all different 103 lots of random text, all the same I want to extract the numbers, i.e. the first word on each line. I've got a terminal running bash open on my Linux box... If these were in a text file, I would do this: awk '{print $1}' mytextfile.txt I would like to paste these in, and get my numbers out, without creating a temp file. my naive first attempt looked like this: $ awk '{print $1}' 100 some random text 100 101 some more random text 101 102 lots of random text, all different 103 lots of random text, all the same 102 103 The buffering of stdin and stdout make a hash of this. I wouldn't mind if stdin all printed first, followed by all of stdout; this is what would happen if I were to paste into 'sort' for example, but awk and sed are a different story. a little more thought gave me this: open two terminals. Create a fifo file. Read from the fifo on one terminal, write to it on another. This does in fact work, but I'm lazy. I don't want to open a second terminal. Is there a way in the shell that I can hide the text echoed to the screen when I'm passing it in to a pipe, so that I paste this: 100 some random text 101 some more random text 102 lots of random text, all different 103 lots of random text, all the same but see this? $ awk '{print $1}' 100 101 102 103

  • Combo box in a scrollable panel causing problems

    I have a panel with AutoScroll set to true. In it, I am programmatically adding ComboBox controls. If I add enough controls to exceed the viewable size of the panel a scroll bar appears (so far so good). However, if I open one of the combo boxes near the bottom of the viewable area the combo list isn't properly displayed and the scrollable area seems to be expanded. This results in all of the controls being "pulled" to the new bottom of the panel with some new blank space at the top. If I continue to tap on the drop down at the bottom of the panel the scrollable area will continue to expand indefinitely. I'm anchoring the controls to the left, right and top so I don't think anchoring is involved. Is there something obvious that could be causing this? Update: It looks like the problem lies with anchoring the controls to the right. If I don't anchor to the right then I don't get the strange behavior. However, without right anchoring the control gets cut off by the scroll bar. I wonder if I have to write a decorator class that accepts the iterator object as an argument, and define an __exit__ method for it?   • SHGetFolderPath returns path with question marks in it

    Hi, Our application calls ShGetFolderPath when it runs, to get the My Documents folder. This normally works great. However, for three users - ???????, Jörg and Jörgen (see if you can spot the pattern!) - the call returns some very strange results. For example, for ???????, the call returns: c:\Users\???????\Documents I assume there's some sort of character encoding shenanigan going on here, possibly related to Unicode, but I don't have any experience with that sort of thing. How can I get a useful path to the folder (and other related folders) out of windows, without grovelling through registry keys for the information? In an email to me, ??????? ("Dmitry"), told me his "my documents" folder was actually located here: C:\Users\43D6~1\Documents So I know there's a way to get a "normal" version of the path out of Windows, I just don't know what it is. Background: Our application is not unicode-aware, and uses standard "char *" strings. How can we get the "normal" path? I'm not opposed to calling the "unicode" version of the function, then converting it to "normal" text, if that's possible. Converting the application entirely to use unicode is not an option here (we don't have the time). Thanks.

  • Triple Quotes? How do I delimit a databound Javascript string parameter in ASP.NET?

    How do I delimit a Javascript databound string parameter in an anchor OnClick event? I have an anchor tag in an ASP.NET Repeater control. The OnClick event of the anchor contains a call to a Javascript function. The Javascript funciton takes a string for it's input parameter. The string parameter is populated with a databound value from the Repeater. I need the 'double quotes' for the Container.DataItem. I need the 'single quotes' for the OnClick. And I still need one more delimiter (triple quotes?) for the input string parameter of the Javascript function call. Since I can't use 'single quotes' again, how do I ensure the Javascript function knows the input parameter is a string and not an integer? Without the extra quotes around the input string parameter, the Javascript function thinks I'm passing in an integer. Cheers in advance for any knowledge you can drop. We've been scratching our heads with with this interesting scenario at the office, and we're anxious to hear your ideas and approaches: We have a database, whose schema is prone to changes -lets call it Prony-. (is used to store configuration parameters for embedded devices. so if the embedded devices guy need a new table, property or relationship for the model, he should be able to adapt the schema in a easy way -happens so often- ). Prony needs a web interface to create/edit its data. We have another database containing data that also need to be loaded to the devices, after making some transformations - lets call this one Oddy- (this data it's generated by an already existent administrative web application). Finally we have Tracy, a server that communicates our DBs and our embedded devices. She should to auto-adapt herself, to our dbs schema changes and serialize the data to the devices. Nice puzzle, don't think so? : ) Our current candidates: Rady: The fast Lets create some views in Prony that make the data transformation from Oddy. then use DynamicData (or some RAD tool) to create/update a simple web interface for Prony (so he can even consult the transformated data from coming from Prony : ). About Tracy, she will need to be recompiled to update her DB schema (Entity framework should work) and use Reflection to explore recursively the schema and serialize data. Cons: We would have to recompile Tracy and the Prony's web interface. What do you think of the candidate(s)? What would you do?

    My web app uses the sql memebership provider. Running it locally all is well, deploying to a dev server it works fine too in firefox, but in IE8 something unexpected is happening. Once a user logs in they're supposed to be redirected to home.aspx. What's happening when I attempt to login is it appears to accept the login credentials but then doesn't redirect to home.aspx. Instead it just redirects me to the login page as though I had attempted to access home.aspx directly without being logged in. The url parameter ReturnUrl is appended, Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fhome.aspx Why is this only happening with IE8? My local PC is IIS7 but the server is IIS6.   • ABGroupAddMember - Cannot Add Contact to Group (iPhone Address Book)

    Hi, I wonder if someone can help me out on this: I'm writing some code to copy a set of contacts received through a web application into the Address Book. I want to put all these new contacts under a certain group. My code successfully creates the group and adds the contacts into the address book. However, the 'ABGroupAddMember' operation fails. It fails without an error and the result it returns is true, meaning that according to the debugger the contact should have been added to the group. However, this does not work. The portion of my loop code that adds the contact to the address book and then assigns it to the group is this: ABAddressBookAddRecord(addressBook,person, &anError); ABAddressBookSave(addressBook,&anError); ABGroupAddMember(fusionLiveGroupRef,person, &anError); ABAddressBookSave(addressBook,&anError); All references are valid. No errors are returned. All operations return true. What is going wrong?

  • Return and Save XML Object From Sharepoint List Web Service

    I am trying to populate a variable with an XML response from an ajax call on page load so that on keyup I can filter through that list without making repeated get requests (think very rudimentary autocomplete). The trouble that I am having seems to be potentially related to variable scoping but I am fairly new to js/jQuery so I am not quite certain. The following code doesn't do anything on key up and adding alerts to it tells me that it is executing leadResults() on keyup and that the variable is returning an XML response object but it appears to be empty. The strange bit is that if I move the leadResults() call into the getResults() function the UL is populated with the results correctly.   • In what order does DOJO handles ajax requests?

    Hi, Using a form in a dialog box I am using Dojo in jsp to save the form in my database. After that request is completed using dojo.xhrPost() I am sending in another request to update a dropdown box that should include the added form object that was just saved, but for some reason the request to update the dropdown is executed before saving the form in the database even though the form save is called first. Using Firebug I can see that the getLocations() request is completed before the sendForm() request.     I am trying to find out as to why youtube embeds works just fine on iPad, and not the embeds of any other video site.     I am storing bitmap-like data in a two-dimensional int array. I'd like to modify this method in two (probably related) ways: I'd like to remove the intermediate Bitmap from the above code entirely, and go directly from my int[,] array to the device-compatible bitmap (i.e. the IntPtr). I presume this would involve calling CreateCompatibleBitmap, but I don't know how to go from that call to actually manipulating the pixel values. This should logically follow from the answer to the first, but I'd also like my method to re-use existing GDI bitmap handles (instead of creating a new bitmap each time). How can I do this? NOTE: I don't really use Bitmap.SetPixel(), as its performance could best be described as "glacial". The code is just for illustration.

    I have 3 tables: subcontracts, companies and contacts. Each table has a active_status flags which shows that the item is still active (hasn't been deleted). Each contact has a company_id field which stores the id of the contact's company. Each subcontract has a company_id field which stores the subcontract's company. Each company has a company_id field which holds its guid and a primary_company field, b/c the company could be a subsidiary. If it's a subsidiary, the primary_company field holds the id of the primary company. I have a subcontract form. On the form, I have a drop-down of contacts which are stored in a contact table. Currently the drop-down lists all contacts. I would like to have the drop-down only list contacts which belong to the subcontract's company or any of that company's subsidiaries.   • twisted deferred/callbacks and asynchronous execution

    hey guys, quick question about twisted and python... im trying to figure out how can i make my code more asynchronous using twisted and ive come to sort of a dead end, if a function of mine returns a deferred object, then i add a list of callbacks, the first callback will be called after the deferred function provides some result through deferred_obj.callback, then, in the chain of callbacks, the first callback will do something with the data and call the second callback and etc. however chained callbacks will not be considered asynchronous because they're chained and the event loop will keep firing each one of them concurrently until there is no more, right? however, if i have a deferred object, and i attach as its callback the deferred_obj.callback as in d.addCallback(deferred_obj.callback) then this will be considered asynchronous, because the deferred_obj is waiting for the data, and then the method that will pass the data is waiting on data as well, however once i d.callback 'd' object processes the data then it call deferred_obj.callback however since this object is deferred, unlike the case of chained callbacks, it will execute asynchronously... correct? meaning chained callbacks are NOT asynchronous while chained deferreds are, correct? thank you PS: assuming all of my code is non-blocking

    I would like your comments and suggestion on this. I am doing the pagination for a page in jsf. The datatable is bound to a Backing Bean property through the "binding" attribute. I have 2 boolean variables to determine whether to render 'Prev' and 'Next' Button - which is displayed below the datatable. When either the 'Prev' or 'Next' button is clicked, In the backing bean I get the bound dataTable property and through which i get the "first" and "rows" attribute of the datatable and change accordingly. I display 5 rows in the page. The following code creates a public/private pair and extracts the public key from that pair. The pair and the public key are stored in separate key containers. The keys are then obtained from those key containers at which point they should be the same as the keys going into the containers. The code works when CspProviderFlags.UseDefaultKeyContainer is specified for CspParameters.Flags (i.e. the key read back out from the PublicKey container is the same), but when CspProviderFlags.UseMachineKeyStore is specified for CspParameters.Flags the key read back from PublicKey is different.   • Asp.Net tree view in SharePoint webpart- Input string error

    Hi All, I am facing a very strange issue. I have a SharePoint webpart that displays an asp.net tree view. It takes tree depth from a drop down. To improve performance of the tree view, i am setting the PopulateOnDemand property to true for the last level of the tree depth. For example, if i have a total of 10 levels in the data and the user selects tree depth as 3, then the third level data i set PopulateOnDemand to true. Now comes the strange part. When i click on the + image on the third level, and if there are children under that particular node then call back happens and node gets expanded. But if there no children for that particular node, then click + throws "Input string was not in the correct format" error. I have made sure that there is no server side error. Some things looks to be fishy when internet explorer is trying to bind construct the expanded node. Please let me know if any one faced similar issue or the resolution for the same?   • Spring - Transaction Readonly

    Hello Gurus! Just wanted your expert opinions on declarative transaction management for Spring. Here is my setup - A. DAO Layer is Plain old JDBC using jdbcTemplete (No hibernate etc) B. Service Layer is POJO with declarative trasnactions as follows - save*, readonly=false, rollback for Throwable Things work fine with above setup. However when I say get*, readonly=true I see errors in my log file saying - Database connection cannot be marked as readonly. This happens for all get* methods in Service Layer. Now my questions - A. Do I have to say get* as readonly? All my get* methods are pure read DB operations. I do not wish to run them in any transaction context. How serious is the above error? B. When I remove the get* confiiguration, I do not see the errors, morever all my simple get* operations are performed without transactions. Is this the way to go? C. Why would anyone want to have transactional methods where readonly = true? Is there any practical significance of this configuration? Thank you! As always your resposes are much appreciated!
