• Collaborative data modelling software?

  I'm trying to find a tool where a lot of people can work on a data model collaboratively. Embarcadero has a an ER application called ER/studio which apparently comes with a repository system that acts like typical version control software. That sounds great except ER/studio is expensive and this is a non-profit and open source organization where we encourage members to even contribute small changes. What's the best solution? Either downloadable software or a web service would work. We don't mind paying, but the cost can't go up with the number of participants...

• PCI compliance when using third-party processing

  My company is outsourcing the development of our new e-commerce site to a third party web development company. The way they set up our site to handle transactions is by having the user enter the necessary payment info, then passing that data to a third party merchant that processes the payment, then completing the transaction if everything is good. When the issue of PCI/DSS compliance was raised, they said: You wont need PCI certification because the clients browser will send the sensitive information directly to the third party merchant when the transaction is processed. However, the process will be transparent to the user because all interface and displays are controlled by us. The only server required to be compliant is the third party merchant's because no sensitive card data ever touches your server or web app. Even though I very much so trust and respect the knowledge of our web developers, what they are saying is raising some serious red flags for me. The way the site is described, I am sure we will not be using a hosted payment page like PayPal or Google Checkout offers (how could we maintain control over UI if we were?) And while my knowledge of e-commerce is laughable at best, it seems like the only other option for us would be to use XML direct to communicate with our third party merchant for processing. My two questions are as follows: Based off everything you've read, is "XML Direct" the only option they could conceivably be using, or is there another method I don't know of which they could be implementing? Most importantly, is it true our site does not need PCI certification? As I understand it, using the XML direct method means that we do have to be PCI/DSS certified, and the only way around getting certified is through a payment hosted page (i.e. PayPal).

• I cannot install flash player, I am getting 1603 exit code

  I am trying to install flash player silently, using a powershell script. I do not think it is being installed. I looked under "control panel-uninstall programs" I don't see flash player listed there. Also, I am printing the exit code for the process and it prints 1603 exit code, which is "fatal error during installation" As an experiment, I double click on the flash player .msi file, and it gave me 1722 error " Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. "

• BPM 11g - Dynamic Task Assignment with Multi-level Organization Units

  I've seen several requirements to have a more granular level of task assignment in BPM 11g based on some value in the data passed to the process. Parametric Roles is normally the first port of call to try to satisfy this requirement, but in this blog we will show how a lot of use-cases can be satisfied by the easier to implement and flexible Organization Unit. The Use-Case Task assignment is to an approval group containing several users. At runtime, a location value in the input data determines which of the particular users the task is ultimately assigned to. In this case we use the Demo Community referenced in the SOA Admin Guide, and specifically the "LoanAnalyticGroup" which contains three users; "szweig", "mmitch" & "fkafka". In our scenario we would like to assign a task to "szweig" if the input data specifies that the location is "JapanCentral", to "fkafka" if the location is "JapanNorth" and to "mmitch" if "JapanSouth", and to all of them if the location is "Japan" i.e....   The Process Simple one human task process.... In the output data association of the "Start" activity we need to set the value of the "Organization Unit" predefined variable based on the input data (note that the  predefined variables can only be set on output data associations)....  ...and in the output data association of the human activity we will reset the "Organization Unit" to empty, always good practice to ensure that the Organization Unit will not be used for any subsequent human activities for which we do not require it.... Set Up the Organization Unit  Log in to the BPM Workspace with an administrator user (weblogic/welcome1 in our case) and choose the "Administration" option. Within "Roles" assign the "ProcessOwner" swim-lane for our process to "LoanAnalyticGroup".... Within "Organization Units" we can model our organization.... "Root Organization Unit" as "Japan" and "Child Organization Unit" as "Central", "South" & "North" as shown. As described previously, add user "szweig" to "Central", "mmitch" to "South" and "fkafka" to "North"....   Test the Process Invalid Data  First let us test with invalid data in the input to see what the consequences are, here we use "X" as input.... ...and looking at the instance we can see it has errored.... Organization Unit Root Level Assignment  Now let us see what happens if we have "Japan" in the input data.... ...looking in the "flow trace" we can see that the task has been assigned....  ... but who has the task been assigned to ? Let us look in the BPM Workspace for user "szweig"....  ...and for "mmitch"....  ... and for "fkafka"....  ...so we can see that with an Organization Unit at "Root" level we have successfully assigned the task to all users. Organization Unit Child Level Assignment  Now let us test with "Japan/North" in the input data.... ...and looking in "fkafka" workspace we see the task has been assigned, remember, he was associated with "JapanNorth"....   ... but what about the workspace of "szweig"....  ...no tasks assigned, neither has "mmitch", just as we expected. Summary  We have seen in this blog how to easily implement multi-level dynamic task routing using Organization Units, a common use-case and a simpler solution than Parametric Roles.

• Links for Getting Started with PowerShell for Office 365 and Exchange Online

• Standards for how developers work on their own workstations

  We've just come across one of those situations which occasionally comes up when a developer goes off sick for a few days mid-project. There were a few questions about whether he'd committed the latest version of his code or whether there was something more recent on his local machine we should be looking at, and we had a delivery to a customer pending so we couldn't wait for him to return. One of the other developers logged on as him to see and found a mess of workspaces, many seemingly of the same projects, with timestamps that made it unclear which one was "current" (he was prototyping some bits on versions of the project other than his "core" one). Obviously this is a pain in the neck, however the alternative (which would seem to be strict standards for how each developer works on their own machine to ensure that any other developer can pick things up with a minimum of effort) is likely to break many developers personal work flows and lead to inefficiency on an individual level. I'm not talking about standards for checked-in code, or even general development standards, I'm talking about how a developer works locally, a domain generally considered (in my experience) to be almost entirely under the developers own control. So how do you handle situations like this? Are the one of those things that just happens and you have to deal with, the price you pay for developers being allowed to work in the way that best suits them? Or do you ask developers to adhere to standards in this area - use of specific directories, naming standards, notes on a wiki or whatever? And if so what do your standards cover, how strict are they, how do you police them and so on? Or is there another solution I'm missing? [Assume for the sake of argument that the developer can not be contacted to talk through what he was doing here - even if he could knowing and describing which workspace is which from memory isn't going to be simple and flawless and sometimes people genuinely can't be contacted and I'd like a solution which covers all eventualities.]

• windows 2003 remote desktop configuration - "Active session limit" greyed out

  I have a terminal server which works fine except for one thing: users are logged off after 2 hours, regardless of activity. I have Override user settings checked in the appropriate control window, and "End a disconnected session: Never" is set. But, I found the "Active session limit" is greyed out so I can't change it, and is set to 2 hours. The user (only 1 actually needs a session on this server for more than 2 hours at a time) is able to reconnect to his session immediately. http://the-wes.com/images/active-session-disabled.jpg Any ideas? thanks, -wes

  I am wondering whether the is a mechanism to manually control the call-order of void Game.LoadContent() as it is the case with void Game.Draw(GameTime gt) by setting int DrawableGameComponent.DrawOrder ? except the order that results from adding components to the Game.Components container and maybe there exists something similar with Game.Update(GameTime gt) ? UPDATE To exemplify my issue consider you have several game components which do depends to each other regarding their instantiation. All are inherited from DrawableGameComponent. Now suppose that in one of these components you are loading a Model from the games content pipeline and add it to some static container in order to provide access to it for other game components. public override LoadContent() { // ... Model m = _contentManager.Load<Model>(@"content/myModel"); // GameComponents is a static class with an accessible list where game components reside. GameComponents.AddCompnent(m); // ... } Now it's easy to imagine that this components load method has to precede other game components that do want to access the model m in their own load method.

• Rosegarden plugin list is empty

  I've just installed rosegarden through apt. I've also installed jack and a low latency kernel through a PPA https://launchpad.net/~abogani/+archive/ppa. I've started jack-server and through the control panel I can see its wiring things through rosegarden. I've also tried installing qsynth and dssi both through apt. However I can't see any plug ins in the synth plug-in list. Therefore I'm unable to test if this works. I've tried launching qsynth before rosegarden and I've tried a few things however I just can't see any plugins. Does anyone know how to get this to work? • homegroup administrator user no longer exists

  I had a PC with windows 7 that was the homegroup administrator for my network. I recently upgraded to windows 8 I went to homegroup in control panel and saw that the original homegroup was never removed. It says to talk to the administrator on and obtain the password to join the homegroup. I need to create a new homegroup but I cant unless I somehow remove the old one. And I cant do that because the user that had rights to the old one no longer exists. Please help!! Ben

• What does drag lock do in boot camp?

  In the control panel for my mac book pro I have an icon called Boot camp. Inside there and inside the trackpad tab I have an option called drag lock. It sounds useful to me as I sometimes find it awkward dragging long distances. I can't figure out how to use it though. Can someone explain how I can find out more info on drag lock? I can't find any references on google. Also even without the dragging option on I can drag.

  Is there a way to add widgets to a Gnome screensaver? I think this can be done with KDE 4, but I've never liked KDE very much. I'm a programmer and comfortable with writing code if needed. • The Middle of Every Project

  I read a quote somewhere “The middle of every successful project looks like a mess.” or something to that effect. I suppose the projects where the beginning, middle and end are a mess are the ones you need to watch out for. Right now we are in ramp up of the maintenance/support teams at a big project in the Nordics. We are facing a year of mixed mode operations, where we have production operations and the phased rollout to new locations in parallel. The support team supports, and the deployment team deploys. As usual the assumption right up to about a month or so before initial go-live was that the deployment team would carry the support. Not! Consequently we had a last minute scramble over the Christmas/New Year to fire up a support/maintenance team. While it is a bit messy and not perfect – the quality of the mess (I mean scramble) is not so bad. Weekly operational review with the operational delivery managers, written issue lists and assigned actions, candid discussions getting the problems on the table and documented, issues getting solved and moved off the table. So while the middle of a project might look like a mess (even the start) it is methodical use of project management tools of checklists and scheduled communication points that are helping us navigate out of the mess and bring it all under control.

• Do you know the minimum builds to create on any branch?

  You should always have three builds on your team project. These should be setup and tested using an empty solution before you write any code at all. Figure: Three builds named in the format [TeamProject].[AreaPath]_[Branch].[Gate|CI|Nightly] for every branch.   These builds should use the same XAML build workflow; however you may set them up to run a different set of tests depending on the time it takes to run a full build. Gate – Only needs to run the smallest set of tests, but should run most if not all of the Unit Test. This is run before developers are allowed to check-in CI – This should run all Unit Tests and all of the automated UI tests. It is run after a developer check-in. Nightly – The Nightly build should run all of the Unit Tests, all of the Automated UI tests and all of the Load and Performance tests. The nightly build is time consuming and will run but once a night. Packaging of your Product for testing the next day may be done at this stage as well. Figure: You can control what tests are run and what data is collected while they are running. Note: We do not run all the tests every time because of the time consuming nature of running some tests, but ALL tests should be run overnight. • Admin mode on Procurve Switches

  Not being a network expert, I spent some time configuring my network, until I found my mistake: On my HP ProCurve Switch 1810G, I thought that "Admin mode" means whether the administrative interface can be accessed from this port. Well, it means whether the port is enabled or not. Extract from the help function: Admin Mode - Select to enable the port-control administration state. Click to enable and have the port participate in the network.(Default : Enabled ) Well, of course I didn't read the help, because I didn't doubt it's for the adminsitrative interface and suspected an error somewhere else. Anyway, I am wondering if that is a commonly used term for enabling/disabling ports or if HP just wanted to make my life harder? I can't understand why this option isn't just called "Enable port"!? • Experience of Python's “PEP-302 New Import Hooks”

  I'm one of the developers of Ruby (CRuby). We are working on Ruby 2.0 release (planned to release 2012/Feb). Python has "PEP302: New Import Hooks" (2003): This PEP proposes to add a new set of import hooks that offer better customization of the Python import mechanism. Contrary to the current import hook, a new-style hook can be injected into the existing scheme, allowing for a finer grained control of how modules are found and how they are loaded. We are considering introducing a feature similar to PEP302 into Ruby 2.0 (CRuby 2.0). I want to make a proposal which can persuade Matz. Currently, CRuby can load scripts from only file systems in a standard way. If you have any experience or consideration about PEP 302, please share. Example: It's a great spec. No need to change it. It is almost good, but it has this problem... If I could go back to 2003, then I would change the spec to... I'm sorry if such a question is not suitable for here. I posted here because I'm not sure that I can ask this question at python-dev (of course, the list is not for cruby development). • Are there any "best practices" on cross-device development?

  Developing for smartphones in the way the industry is currently doing is relatively new. Of course, there has been enterprise-level mobile development for several decades. The platforms have changed, however. Think of: from stylus-input to touch-input (different screen res, different control layout etc.) new ways of handling multi-tasking on mobile platforms (e.g. WP7's "tombstoning") The way these platforms work aren't totally new (iPhone has been around for quite awhile now for example), but at the moment when developing a functionally equal application for both desktop and smartphone it comes down to developing two applications from ground up. Especially with the birth of Windows Phone with the .NET-platform on board and using Silverlight as UI-language, it's becoming appealing to promote the re-use of (parts of the UI). Still, it's fairly obvious that the needs of an application on a smartphone (or tablet) are very different compared to the needs of a desktop application. An (almost) one-on-one conversion will therefore be impossible. My question: are there "best practices", pitfalls etc. documented about developing "cross-device" applications (for example, developing an app for both the desktop and the smartphone/tablet)? I've been looking at weblogs, scientific papers and more for a week or so, but what I've found so far is only about "migratory interfaces".

• Spotlight on an ACE: Edwin Biemond

  Edwin Biemond is an active member of the ACE community, having worked with Oracle's development tooling and database technologies since 1997. Since then, Edwin has become an expert in many of Oracle's middleware technologies as well, including WebLogic and SOA. In fact, Edwin has become so prolfic that he was named the Java Developer of the Year in 2009. Edwin hails from the Netherlands, where he is an architect at the company Amis, and is also a co-author of the OSB Development Cookbook. Elastic JMS in 12.1.3 will support Server Migration so you can’t lose any JMS messages. In 12.1.4, Dynamic Clusters will have support for auto-scaling based on thresholds based on user-defined metrics. • How to make the start menu find a program based on a custom keyword?

  I am searching for a way to type a keyword in the start menu Search programs and files field and that it will return the application that match the keyword. An example will better explain this: Suppose that I want to start the powershell. Currently what I can type in the search field is power and the first item that appear is the 64bits powershell shortcut. Now suppose that I'd like ps to return powershell as the first item of the search list. Currently, typing ps return all files with the .ps extension, along with a control panel options about recording steps but not the powershell executable itself. How can I do that?

• External HDD is always in use when trying to safely remove

  I have a WD 1TB Elements external hard drive and every time I use the Windows 7 "safely remove" feature, it gives me a dialog telling that a process is using the disk. Using Sysinternals Process Explorer and the answer on this question (find everything with the drive letter) I get the following result: What is the $Extend folder and why is it in use? How can I disable it? I cannot remove it using the command line (access denied). Edit: I've followed the instructions over here and under the registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup I have a Multi-String Value named IgnoreNTFS with data \$Extend* /s But this does not make any difference. Also this question is not about a server. Additionally I can tell that I use a program called mkv2vob to convert video files with a Matroska container into something my PS3 will play. I convert the source files straight from my external HDD, but I would expect if this program does not release the lock on the HDD, surely it cannot be locked if the process isn't even running?

• Color Calibrate Dual Monitor XP SP2

  This topic has been touched on before but not really answered. I have a dual monitor system and the colors differ wildly. I currently live Buenos Aires where color correction hardware costs premium prices. I do some graphic design, but don't require a pro-level calibration. That said, I'd like my monitors to be set as close to "true color" as possible. I've located the useful and free Monitor Calibration Wizard, but it seems to adjust the entire system internally at startup. I could use the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet to set a different ICC or ICM profile for each monitor, but the Monitor Calibration Wizard outputs its own format for profiles.
