• Do subdomains need to be defined through domain registerar?

  I have bought a new domain name from GoDaddy. Let's say it is abcd.com. On GoDaddy's DNS Managing page, I changed A(Host) part to @ = 74.125.232.215 which is www.google.co.uk's IP address. Now if I type www.abcd.com, it directly goes to www.google.co.uk. But if I type http://test.abcd.com, it cannot be loaded. Do I need to define every subdomain through GoDaddy? Is this how it work? P.S. Amazon EC2 directly generates a subdomain for users to reach their virtual PCs. It cannot be domain registerar dependant. P.S.2. Same question for using "www2" at the start of url.

• Buzzword for "performance-aware" software development

  There seems to be an overabundance of buzzwords for software development styles and methodologies: Agile development, extreme programming, test-driven development, etc... well, is there any sort of buzzword for "performance-aware" development? By "performance awareness", I don't necessarily mean low-latency or low-level programming, although the former would logically fall under the blanket term I'm looking for. I mean development in which resources are recognised to be finite and so there is a general emphasis on low computational complexity, good resource management, etc. If I was to be snarky, I would say "good programming", but that doesn't seem to get the message across so well...

• Colleague unwilling to use unit tests "as it's more to code"

  A colleague is unwilling to use unit tests and instead opting for a quick test, pass it to the users, and if all is well it is published live. Needless to say some bugs do get through. I mentioned we should think about using unit tests - but she was all against it once it was realised more code would have to be written. This leaves me in the position of modifying something and not being sure the output is the same, especially as her code is spaghetti and I try to refactor it when I get a chance. So whats the best way forward for me?

  Well the question is in the title - how do I improve my code reading skills. The software/hardware environment I currently do development in is quite slow with respect to compilation times and time it takes the whole system to test. The system is quite old/complex and thus splitting it into a several smaller, more manageable sub-projects is not feasible in a neare future. I have realized is what really hinders the development progress is my code reading skills. How do I improve my code reading skills, so I can spot most of the errors and issues in the code even before I hit the "do compile" key, even before I start the debugger?

• Wireless Connected But No Internet Connection (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening. • sound card is not working

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.4 on my dell xps m2010 using wubi. Then booted up and could not connect to the Internet using 3three huawei e122 usb mobile broadband (I would like this to work also). I've managed to connect through a wireless network, I went to my favorite sites and was told I needed to install adobe flash player.This what I did players run and picture is good.   I'm thinking of developing a pluggable test and assessment module. This tool will be used especially for desktop application projects to report and log errors, bugs, missing features and suggestions from testers. The tool will be plugged to the application by putting a small icon to the application itself. When pressed the tool will be visible where user can create entries about the application. Is there already a tool like that? I am not speaking about UI testing btw. For example, this tool might have a form consisting of Page name Environment information Entry type (can be bug, feature request, suggestion) Message User Info (name, contact etc) Date I think such a tool can greatly help testers prepare reports. Developers can understand the issue better and track all the reports.

  Relating to this question, I have another question regarding unit testing functions in the utility classes: Assume you have function signatures like this: public function void doSomething(InternalClass obj, InternalElement element) where InternalClass and InternalElement are both Classes which source code are not available, because they are hidden in the API. Additionally, doSomething only operates on obj and element. I thought about mocking those classes away but this option is not possible due to the fact that they do not implement an interface at all which I could use for my Mocking classes. However, I need to fill obj with defined data to test doSomething. How can this problem be solved?

• How do I resolve "No JSON object could be decoded" on mythbuntu live CD?

  I have been running a MythTV frontend on my laptop for some time against a MythTV backend installed in Linux Mint 12 on another computer, and everything works fine. Now, I'm trying out the Mythbuntu Live CD (12.04.1 32-bit) on the laptop, to turn it into a dedicated front end. It's connecting to the network just fine, and I can see my server. When I click on the frontend icon on the desktop, it asks me for the security code, which I've verified against mythtv-setup on the server. However, when I test that code, it shows the error message "No JSON object could be decoded". I've looked in the control center to see if there's something else I should be setting up. The message above implies to me that it can't find the server, but I can find no place in the control center to tell it where to find my myth backend, which I find a little odd. Does the live CD not work against a backend server on another machine?

At the moment I'm typing, it and my site is down. I don't want to let my clients down in the future. It's been down for over 2 days. I thought it was a coding problem at first, and then found out I couldn't connect to my server. Zymic had very good reviews, and its downtime was OK (not high or low), but now I want to change my web host. What should I look for (besides downtime guarantee)? Also, do you have any suggestions that with all the benefits? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

I am thinking of tools like grep, ctags, unit-tests, functional test, class-diagram generators, call graphs, code metrics like sloccount and so on. I'd be interested in your experiences, the helpers you used or wrote yourself and the size of the codebase, with which you worked with. I realize, that this is also a process (happening over time) and that learning can mean "can give a ten minute intro" to "can refactor and shrink this to 30% of the size". • Looking for a simple to use email server that can be programmatically (preferably remotely) used

  I've been poking around the internet for much of the day, but I can't seem to find a good server to fit my needs. What I need is a simple to use and deploy (pref open source) lightweight email server that I can create users on programmaticly that has IMAP or POP support. I'd prefer something with an existing service interface, but if I have to write a REST API on top of an easy to use API, that's acceptable. The purpose of this tool will be to allow a test automation framework to create new email accounts and retrieve email sent to those addresses. I need text, html, and possibly attachment support as well. Perhaps it's my noobishness, but I can't really suss out the details from the documentation on the servers available out there to figure out which fit my needs.

  I'm a freelancer who currently creates websites locally using something like MAMP to test websites locally before pushing them live with FTP. I'm looking at taking on my first employee, and I would need to be able to work on websites with them simultaneously. Can anyone explain or provide links to some good documentation on team workflow, or some key phrases I should be googling to get started on my set up? Unlike a lot of the stackoverflow community I've never worked in a dev team, large or small as I'm self taught so just need to know where to start. At present I'm thinking I need an extra computer to use as a server, then use Git or some such to version control files on that computer, as well as installing apache on it so it can be viewed by any computers in my current home network. Is this heading down the right track?

• Redirect a url to another url in IIS 7.5

  I have no idea why this isn't working. I've tried creating map rules and then rewritng and redirecting the url. I've tried just redirecting it with a simple rewrite rule and no matter what, the only time I can get it to work is if I set the match url to match this regex .*. I'm trying to redirect webmail.example.com to mail.example.com. Seemed like it would have taken but a couple seconds; boy was I wrong.   I installed Ubuntu 11.10 today on my Lenovo w500. After that when i tried running sudo apt-get update This is the error i am getting. • git, maven and jenkins - versioning, dev and release builds workflow

  What is the preferred way to do the following with git, maven and jenkins: I am developping an application, which I would like to maintain "dev" and "release" branches. I would like jenkins to build both. It could be so that the release-artifacts would have versions like 1.5.2 and the dev-builds would just be 0.0.1-SNAPSHOTs. I would like to not have to have 2 different pom.xml files. I looked into profiles, but they don't seem to be able to change artifact versions. One way I looked at could be adding a 'qualifier' to the test-builds. Of course I could just rename the file, because the real artifact-information on this is not important, because the app is a standalone one. What would be the preferred way to doing this? Or how would you do this?
