  • Tracking down origin of I/O in multi-process server

    I'm currently trying to track down some phantom I/O in a PostgreSQL build I'm testing. It's a multi-process server and it isn't simple to associate disk I/O back to a particular back-end and query. I thought Linux's perf tool would be ideal for this, but I'm struggling to capture block I/O performance counter metrics and associate them with user-space activity. It's easy to record block I/O requests and completions with, eg: sudo perf record -g -T -u postgres -e 'block:block_rq_*' and the user-space pid is recorded, but there's no kernel or user-space stack captured, or ability to snapshot bits of the user-space process's heap (say, query text) etc. So while you have the pid, you don't know what the process was doing at that point. Just perf script output like: postgres 7462 [002] 301125.113632: block:block_rq_issue: 8,0 W 0 () 208078848 + 1024 [postgres] If I add the -g flag to perf record it'll take snapshots of the kernel stack, but doesn't capture user-space state for perf events captured in the kernel. The user-space stack only goes up to the entry-point from userspace, like LWLockRelease, LWLockAcquire, memcpy (mmap'd IO), __GI___libc_write, etc. So. Any tips? Being able to capture a snapshot of the user-space stack in response to kernel events would be ideal.

    I have a table with 42 million records. 32 million have a null value and I would like to generate a new guid for each one. Should I do this in batches? Also, going forward, I would like a new guid added to the field on the insert of a new record. What is the best way to do this? The field is not the primary key, which is an auto-incrementing integer.

  • What are provenly scalable data persistence solutions for consumer profiles?

    Consumer profiles with analytical scores [ConsumerID, 1..n demographical variables, 1...n analytical scores e.g. "likely to churn" "likely to buy an item 100$ in worth" etc.] have to be possible to query fast if they are to be used in customizing web-sites, consumer communications etc. Well. If you have: Large number of consumers Large profiles with a huge set of variables (as profiles describing human behaviour are likely to be..) ...you are in trouble. If you really have a physical relational database to which you target a query and then a physical disk starts to rotate someplace to give you an individual profile or a set of profiles, the profile user (a web site customizing a page, a recommendation engine making a recommendation..) has died of boredom before getting any observable results. There is the possibility of having the profiles in memory, which would of course increase the performance hugely. What are the most proven solutions for a fast-response, scalable consumer profile storage? Is there a shootout of these someplace?

  • Double join with habtm in ActiveRecord

    I have a weird situation involving the need of a double inner join. I have tried the query I need, I just don't know how to make rails do it. The Data Account (has_many :sites) Site (habtm :users, belongs_to :account) User (habtm :sites) Ignore that they are habtm or whatever, I can make them habtm or has_many :through. I want to be able to do @user.accounts or @account.users Then of course I should be able to do @user.accounts < @some_other_account And then have @user.sites include all the sites from @some_other_account. I've fiddled with habtm and has_many :through but can't get it to do what I want. Basically I need to end up with a query like this (copied from phpmyadmin. Tested and works): SELECT accounts.* FROM accounts INNER JOIN sites ON sites.account_id = accounts.id INNER JOIN user_sites ON sites.id = user_sites.site_id WHERE user_sites.user_id = 2 Can I do this? Is it even a good idea to have this double join? I am assuming it would work better if users had the association with accounts to begin with, and then worry about getting @user.sites instead, but it works better for many other things if it is kept the way it is (users <- sites).

I am fairly new to JS (my background is in C++, enterprise languages like assembly and COBOL, and some light .NET), so I was wondering if I could get some advice regarding how to send variable information from one of two text boxes to some javascript and then have the JS do some basic checks and such.   • How can I make PHP scripts timeout gracefully while waiting for long-running MySQL queries?

    I have a PHP site which runs quite a lot of database queries. With certain combinations of parameters, these queries can end up running for a long time, triggering an ugly timeout message. I want to replace this with a nice timeout message themed according to the rest of my site style. Anticipating the usual answers to this kind of question: "Optimise your queries so they don't run for so long" - I am logging long-running queries and optimising them, but I only know about these after a user has been affected. "Increase your PHP timeout setting (e.g. set_time_limit, max_execution_time) so that the long-running query can finish" - Sometimes the query can run for several minutes. I want to tell the user there's a problem before that (e.g. after 30 seconds). "Use register_tick_function to monitor how long scripts have been running" - This only gets executed between lines of code in my script. While the script is waiting for a response from the database, the tick function doesn't get called. In case it helps, the site is built using Drupal (with lots of customisation), and is running on a virtual dedicated Linux server on PHP 5.2 with MySQL 5.

    Here's the situation. I'm writing an automated test that walks the list of dependencies for a proc and determines if an acct has rights for all of the dependent objects. My code looks like this: exec sp_depends 'the_proc_name' -- run this query on the results of sp_depends: select case when exists ( select * from sys.database_permissions dp where grantee_principal_id=USER_ID('TheAccount') and major_id=object_id('dbo.theDependentObject') and minor_id=0 and state_desc = 'GRANT') then 'true' else 'false' end; It all seems to be working fine, but there's a hiccup when it encounters a function. I have one case where TheAccount doesn't have rights to a function (the query above returns false). However the proc that calls the function in question runs fine when running under TheAccount. So there's either something wrong with my test code or functions have special permission behavior in SQL-Server that I'm not aware of. Should I change the code to only search for 'DENY' instead of 'GRANT'? Do functions that are called in procs inherit the permissions of the calling proc except when the execute rights are explicitly denied? Does my code suck?

    since PHP can't be used in Spotify apps directly I am using it on my server only, but I am having problems getting the sessions to work, is it possible to use sessions even? However this one does not seem to enumerate the UserName value for me when I try to use it or at least when I try to write it to the console. Also this returns 8 total results I should only have 2 results as I only have 2 users.     I'm trying to do pagination with a very old version of DB2 and the only way I could figure out selecting a range of rows was to use the OVER command. This query provide's the correct results (the results that I want to paginate over). select MIN(REFID) as REFID, REFGROUPID from ARMS_REFERRAL where REFERRAL_ID<>'Draft' and REFERRAL_ID not like 'Demo%' group by REFGROUPID order by REFID desc Results: REFID REFGROUPID 302 242 301 241 281 221 261 201 225 142 221 161 ... ... SELECT * FROM ( SELECT row_number() OVER () AS rid, MIN(REFID) AS REFID, REFGROUPID FROM arms_referral where REFERRAL_ID<>'Draft' and REFERRAL_ID not like 'Demo%' group by REFGROUPID order by REFID desc ) AS t WHERE t.rid BETWEEN 1 and 5 Results: REFID REFGROUPID 26 12 22 11 14 8 11 7 6 4 As you can see, it does select the first five rows, but it's obviously not selecting the latest. If I add a Order By clause to the OVER() it gets closer, but still not totally correct.     I'm attempting to do a HABTM relationship between a Users table and Groups table. The problem is, that I when I issue this call: $this->User->Group->find('list'); The query that is issued is: SELECT [Group].[id] AS [Group__id], [Group].[name] AS [Group__name] FROM [groups] AS [Group] WHERE 1 = 1 I can only assume at this point that I have defined my relationship wrong as I would expect behavior to use the groups_users table that is defined on the database as per convention.
