  • Securing a Cloud-Based Data Center

    No doubt, with all the media reports about stolen databases and private information, a major concern when committing to a public or private cloud must be preventing unauthorized access of data and applications. In this article, we discuss the security features of Oracle Solaris 11 that provide a bullet-proof cloud environment. As an example, we show how the Oracle Solaris Remote Lab implementation utilizes these features to provide a high level of security for its users. Note: This is the second article in a series on cloud building with Oracle Solaris 11. See Part 1 here.  When we build a cloud, the following aspects related to the security of the data and applications in the cloud become a concern: • Sensitive data must be protected from unauthorized access while residing on storage devices, during transmission between servers and clients, and when it is used by applications. • When a project is completed, all copies of sensitive data must be securely deleted and the original data must be kept permanently secure. • Communications between users and the cloud must be protected to prevent exposure of sensitive information from “man in a middle attacks.” • Limiting the operating system’s exposure protects against malicious attacks and penetration by unauthorized users or automated “bots” and “rootkits” designed to gain privileged access. • Strong authentication and authorization procedures further protect the operating system from tampering. • Denial of Service attacks, whether they are started intentionally by hackers or accidentally by other cloud users, must be quickly detected and deflected, and the service must be restored. In addition to the security features in the operating system, deep auditing provides a trail of actions that can identify violations,issues, and attempts to penetrate the security of the operating system. Combined, these threats and risks reinforce the need for enterprise-grade security solutions that are specifically designed to protect cloud environments.   • SunSpace - a sentimental moment

    I just came back from California where I had a little sentimental moment.With the great help from some former Sun colleagues we move the old SunSpace gear into a new data center in Santa Clara.We will re-purpose the hardware as a new development infrastructure to build integrated demos around Oracle WebCenter products, Business Applications and Social Services. now - I could not resist to restart the SunSpace applications and see if it still works. And hey - even though we had to re-IP the entire  stack (sun.com domain is gone) and with some little hacking (thanks to Apache reverse proxy) -  we got it back! Hey Max - now I just need to change your SSO hack to get login working again Hmm - I won't - but it is really nice to see it working again .. and it's time to switch it off and to work  on the next cool things .. Do you know Oracle WebCenter Sites (formely Fatwire)? Its Oracle's Web Experience Management Solution - a pretty cool technology and a very slick User Interface. I specially like the drag&drop functionality which allows non technical users to easily publish content.  Why do I mention it here ?  Because we will use the SunSpace gear to build cool  Oracle WebCenter Sites demos and proof of concepts integration  into Business Applications and Social Services  This is a sneak preview what we are working on.   • Cisco Unifed Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

  • Cisco Unified Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

    I am working in an environment where we get production issues from time to time related to Oracle connections. We use ODP.NET from ASP.NET applications, and we suspect the firewall closes connections that have been in the connection pool too long. Sometimes we get an "ORA-12571: TNS packet writer failure" error, and sometimes we get "ORA-03135: connection lost contact." I was wondering if someone has run into this and/or has an understanding of the difference between the 2 errors.

    I have a Oracle table whose column is a CLOB datatype. I want to read the content of this table as a text. I tried select dbms_lob.substr( sqltext, 4000, 1 ) from test but this one selects only the first 4000 bytes. How to read the entire content ? there are more than 4000 characters in the sqltext column. Please advise.

  • How do I add the Java Api Documentation to Eclipse?

    Hi I have downloaded Java API documentation from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html#docs and have supposedly attached it to Eclipse using the Window-Preferences-Java-Installed JREs-Edit-"Select rt.jar"-Javadoc Location AND the location has been accepted and "Validates" just fine. However, for the life of me, I can't get Eclipse to show the Javadocs in the tooltip whene I hover over an item (for example in the declaration of an ArrayList). I have also restarted Eclipse in attempts to get it to work what am I doing wrong? Thank you

    UPDATE (3/8/2010) I installed Xdebug and have it tracing my code. I have installed everything the same way on a local server and it works fine. To say I am at a complete loss would be putting it lightly. *NOTE: I ran make test and it returned FAIL on every test. I never ran this on my working machine to see if it reports the same errors. Any idea why make test would report FAIL but make doesn't report any error? I've installed the Oracle Instantclient with no reported errors along with the OCI8 PECL package and at a loss. Whenever I try to open a connection with oci_connect, it halts my entire PHP script. EXAMPLE: <?php ini_set ("display_errors", "1"); error_reporting(E_ALL); echo "before"; $conn = oci_connect("username", "password", "host"); echo "after"; ?> Returns a complete blank page. The module is loaded (seen in phpinfo) and everything installed with no errors. I am at a complete loss. CentOS: 5.4 Apache: 2.2.3 PHP: 5.3.1 InstantClient: 11.2 oci8: 1.4.1 Any thoughts?     I am getting an error about the assembly "C:\Ora10g\bin\Zip.exe". The trouble is this solution does NOT use anything in Oracle at all. I could not find a single reference to 10g anywhere in the project. I inherited this from another person who left our group. He never had this issue. Another member of my team said he got this before but reinstalling the client portion of 10g fixed it. No such luck there. I even tried using WinGrep to search the entire solution folder for "Ora10g" but it wasn't there. Any ideas? I can't build this solution until I can figure out how to get rid of this false reference to Oracle. VS 2005 solution. Contains a couple WinForm apps, a couple class libraries, and a web service.     Table: UserId, Value, Date. I want to get the UserId, Value for the max(Date) for each UserId. That is, the Value for each UserId that has the latest date. Is there a way to do this simply in SQL? (Preferably Oracle) Thank in advance! [Update:] Apologies for any ambiguity: I need to get ALL the UserIds. But for each UserId, only that row where that user has the latest date.
