• How does Garbage Collection in Java work?

  I was wondering how the garbage collector in Java deals with the following situation. Object A has a reference to Object B and Object B has a reference to Object C. The main program has a reference to Object A. So you can use Object B trough Object A, and Object C trough Object B trough Object A. What happens to Object B and Object C, if the link between Object A and Object B is set to null? Should Object B and Object C now been collected by the Garbage Collector? I mean there is still a connection between Object B and Object C.

• Rails migration to add boolean column to Postgres on Heroku

  I'm trying to execute a simple Rails migration to add a boolean column to an existing table. Here's the add_column call: add_column :users, :soliciting, :boolean, :null => false, :default => false However, after the migration runs (successfully, with no errors), I don't see the new column. If I go into the console and list the columns on the User table, for example, with this command: >> User.columns.each { |c| puts "#{c.name} : #{c.type}" } All the other columns show up, but not the one I just added with the migration. What's even more strange is that looking up a random user object yields the Postgres version of booleans (Ruby strings) >> User.find(1).soliciting => "t" However, the existing boolean columns all show up with standard Ruby boolean values of true and false. What's going on here? Is the migration actually complete? Why doesn't the column show up, yet is accessible in the model objects?

That Type is creating at runtime. At that code line I've got error: Could not load file or assembly ', Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. How can I resolve that error?

• Custom message headers in WCF on Mono

  I'm making WCF calls from a Mono client running on Ubuntu (Mono 2.6). I can't seem to add a custom header to my messages. I have tried two different ways: Using a [MessageContract] and [MessageHeader] attributes on a custom class Adding the header to the outgoing messages programmatically, e.g. MessageHeader mhg = new MessageHeader("test"); MessageHeader untyped = mhg.GetUntypedHeader("token", "ns"); OperationContext.Current.OutgoingMessageHeaders.Add(untyped); The header is not there when the call reaches the server! It's always null. Note that both methods work fine running on .NET in Windows. Also note that the message body gets through just fine on Mono. I see some references online that suggest this should work: http://forums.monotouch.net/yaf_postsm1692.aspx https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=551745 Also - the Mono status page shows that all the MessageHeader stuff is fully implemented...   I have a User table which has a PrivilegeId foreign key points to a Privilege table and is the primary key there. In Entity Framework, the VS will not generate a PrivilegeId variable under Users for you. It will generate a Privilege property and PrivilegeReference property for you instead. When I load a User, the Privilege property is null by default. That means EF does not load refered entity for you automatically. I think I may did something wrong? I cannot load Privilege separatedly because I have no info about the Privilege at that time. I guess EF should load the refered entities for me but I missed something. anybody can help me?

I found in the Spring documentation @required which I attempted to use in a 'test' but got this stmt INFO XmlConfigurationProvider:380 - Unable to verify action class [xxx] exists at initialization I have found another way in spring to do this is to write custom init methods and declare those on the bean but it almost seems like this is a strange thing to do to a struts2 action. In my application I inject through spring different web services (via setter injection) into different actions. I want to ensure on startup these are not null and set.

  Context I am storing a java.util.List inside ehcache. Key(String) --> List<UserDetail> The ordered List contains a Top 10 ranking of my most active users. Problem Concurrent 3rd party clients might be requesting for this list. I have a requirement to be as current as possible with regards to the ranking. Thus if the ranking is changed due the activities of users, the ordered List in the cache must not be left stale for very long. Once I've recalculated a new List, I want to replace the one in cache immediately. Consider a busy scenario whereby multiple concurrent clients are requesting for the ranking; how can I replace the cache item in an fashion such that: Clients can continue to pull a possibly stale snapshot. They should never get a null value. There will only be 1 server thread that writes to the cache.

  I cant figure out whats wrong. Its working when i tried to refresh only topics but it doesnt works when tried to refresh topics and page-links. ie. topics table's refreshing, and 'pagelinks' disappearing, i thought pure cannot reach - read second template node. By the way, i tested their code, first message box show up all of nodes - includes 'pagelinks' node, but second one - in function only show up topic rows. Its look like a bug. Anyone knows how can i solve this? ps. I'm using latest version of pure. Thanks.   I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this?   When i'm trying to put russian text in cookie via javascript and then output it via php it returns: %u043F%u0440%u043E%u0432%u0435%u0440%u043A%u0430 How to decode this to normal cyrillic characters?   Hi, I've application to open popup window to print page. function printHTML(urlPath) { var printPopUp = window.open(urlPath,null,"height=600,width=777,status=yes,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no,scrollbars=yes"); printPopUp.print(); } This script is working fine in IE, but in firefox/chrome. print() function is overlapping window.open, as a result print dialog is showing first while screen is still loading. I need to close print dialog in order to render page properly then print manually. Please advise.

• Why does setting a geometry shader cause my sprites to vanish?

  My application has multiple screens with different tasks. Once I set a geometry shader to the device context for my custom terrain, it works and I get the desired results. But then when I get back to the main menu, all sprites and text disappear. These sprites don't dissappear when I use pixel and vertex shaders. The sprites are being drawn through D3D11, of course, with specified view and projection matrices as well an input layout, vertex, and pixel shader. I'm trying DeviceContext->ClearState() but it does not help. • Facebook Connect - logout issue

  Hello I think I'm missing a very silly detail but the logout funtion of facebook connect is not working for me. I followed the steps posted in this answer by Typeoneerror but I cant get it to work. This is my logout javascript function function logout() { FB.init("API_KEY", "/xd_receiver.htm"); FB.Connect.logoutAndRedirect("/logout/url"); } When I click on it - nothing happens - In the browser status bar - For a second I see a message which says waiting for facebook - but I continue to stay on the same page. It does not redirect me nor does it log me out of facebook either. Just to see if the function is being called - I removed FB.init call from the function and then I get the error Error Message: 'FB.Connect' is null or not an object Any suggestions on how to debug this. Product and LocatorID are, in combination, the primary key. I'm guessing that EF is not allowing me to generate a new item without meeting database contraints? How does this make sense if I need to obtain a primary key from the user? I have control over all tiers of the application, so suggestions on database design if needed are also welcomed.
