  • Is there anyway that I can set the 'real' memory usage value while running my java code?

    I'm running a code on a server to generate a 10,000x10,000 matrix and save each value into a table (MySQL). I was informed by the administrator that I can use up to 32g of the physical memory of our server but have no idea how to do it. I googling around and so far only found information about setting the virtual memory using -Xmx. I tried it anyway and using top command I got this: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 3981 gv 35 15 32.4g 304m 10m S 1 0.5 9:54.84 java So, it shows that the -Xmx set the VIRT and not the RES value. Is there anyway that I can set the RES value into 32g?

    I've been reading up about the repository pattern, with a view to implementing it in my own application. Almost all examples I've found on the internet use some kind of existing framework rather than showing how to implement it 'from scratch'. Here's my first thoughts of how I might implement it - I was wondering if anyone could advise me on whether this is correct? I have two tables, named CONTAINERS and BITS. Each CONTAINER can contain any number of BITs. I represent them as two classes: class Container{ private $bits; private $id; //...and a property for each column in the table... public function __construct(){ $this->bits = array(); } public function addBit($bit){ $this->bits[] = $bit; } //...getters and setters... } class Bit{ //some properties, methods etc... } Each class will have a property for each column in its respective table.     Possible Duplicate: Does google always downrank pages with hidden texts Right now I'm working on my new website and I'm really concerned about SEO since the old version of my site(which is from a script that is unusable now) has PR of 4 and I want to lose it So here is my question There is a panel that has 4 tabs Each tabs has tag which has a href like "/box-page/tab/2" and when javascript is not activated it will go this page and shows the corresponding tab and if it's activated it will just make a simple animation to show the other tab There are four boxes(and for tabs) and since I needed to fix the height of the panel I had to use width: 0 for the rest of tabs to keep the height of the box the same as the longest one and inside these boxes(which have width: 0) there are some information that can be indexed by google So as you know google doesn't have javascript and it will go to /box-page/tab/2 and /box-page/tab/3 and ... in all of these pages the information is the same but with different box showing up in the page So here is my question Does google penalize using a div with width: 0px? And if not does it just ignore the content of the div with width 0?(Which is perfect for me ^^) Thanks

    How do you implement a multiselect combobox as part of a Ext.FormPanel using ExtJs? I've been looking, but can't seem to find a solution that is compatible with the latest version of ExtJs (this question is similar, but doesn't have a working/current solution). Based on my intuition, I created some acceptable hierarchies. This seems like a task that can be automated. Does anyone know if there is an algorithm to generate a concept hierarchy for numerical data? For example, this url from Amazon Japan has Japanese characters within the querystring (specifically, the path): http://www.amazon.co.jp/????????-DVD-???/dp/B00005R5J3/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1269891925&sr=8-3 What I would like to do is have: http://www.mysite.com/???????? or even http://www.mysite.com/index.php?name=???????? be able to properly decode the $GET[name] string. I think I have tried all of the urldecode and utf8_decode possibilities, but I just get gibberish in response. This all works fine in a form $_POST, but I need these urls to be emailable...

  • In a digital photo, detecting if a mountain is obscured by clouds.

    The problem I have a collection of digital photos of a mountain in Japan. However the mountain is often obscured by clouds or fog. What techniques can I use to detect that the mountain is visible in the image? I am currently using Perl with the Imager module, but open to alternatives. All the images are taken from the exact same position - these are some samples. My naïve solution I started by taking several horizontal pixel samples of the mountain cone and comparing the brightness values to other samples from the sky. This worked well for differentiating good image 1 and bad image 2. However in the autumn it snowed and the mountain became brighter than the sky, like image 3, and my simple brightness test started to fail. Image 4 is an example of an edge case. I would classify this as a good image since some of the mountain is clearly visible.

    Something i've always wondered, and I can't find any mention of it anywhere online. When a shop from, say Japan, writes code, would I be able to read it in english? Or do languages, like C, php, anything, have Japanese translations that they write? I guess what i'm asking is does every single coder in the world know enough english to use the exact same reserved words I do? Would this code: If (i < size){ switch case 1: print "hi there" default: print "no, thank you" } else { print "yes, thank you" } display the exact same as I'm seeing it right now in english, or would some other non-english-speaking person see the words "if", "switch", "case", "default", "print", and "else" in their native language? EDIT - yes, this is serious. I didn't know if different localiztions of a language have different keywords. or if there are even different localizations at all.

But it only really makes sense that there would be programming languages based on other alphabets, or else bright computer scientists across the world would have to learn a new alphabet to go on in the field. I know for a fact that people in countries dominated by other alphabets develop languages based off the Latin alphabet (eg. Ruby from Japan), but just how common is it for programming languages to be based off of other alphabets like Arabic, or Cyrillic, or even writing systems which are not alphabetic but rather logographic in nature such as Japanese Kanji? Also are any of these languages in active widespread use, or are they mainly used as teaching tools? This is something that has bugged me since I started programming, and I have never run across someone who could think of a real answer.

    I recently decided to host my styles.css and various scripts on Google Docs and link them into my website. I also have all my images hosted through Picasa so that they too will load much faster and consistently across users. My site has most of its traffic from Japan, Africa, and South America, so I assume there will be a performance boost for my users since my server is hosted in Hong Kong. I (in Canada) have measured my load times to be half of what they used to be. Basically it's a free CDN for my personal stuff. I'm not too sure about all of this yet, so here's my question: what are the caveats of this setup?
