    I need to serve flv files from one server, and show those videos on a web page located in another server, with JWPlayer.   • Windows Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 R2, and Registry Backups

    Hi folks! As a developer, I've installed various instances of SQL Sever (2000, 2005, 2008, R2) from all the ways back to 2003 and I've never had an install fail on me....until yesterday. I was installing SQL Server 2008 R2 onto a Windows Server 2008 R2 hosted virtual server and the install finished, but failed on every component. To make matters worse, it was in a state in which I could not uninstall it either, even using command line options! I dug around a bit, but didn't get very far with it. The error is enigmatic and Google didn't turn up much hope. So today, I am going to try again after having the VM image wiped overnight. My question is how can I guard against the same failure today? I don't mind if it fails, but then I know it may be something wrong with the base image I'm getting from the hosting company. I really don't feel like paying another $20 to wipe the VM and I have no idea why it failed. Is it enough for me to backup the registry so that I can restore it in case it fails? What about the installation files? Do I need to have a tool to clean that out, too? Sorry, I'm no sys admin so no real experience with backup/restore aside from System Restore! So any advice would be appreciated!

    I am setting up in a test environment and need to save some paths in a database but dont want to edit the paths when we go to production. My idea being that I could create a share on both servers and use a generic name like LocalHost instead of TestServer for the paths. Example: \\LocalHost\Docs I have used a mapped drive temporarily but was curious if there is another magic word like localhost that works with share paths?

  • VSS Post Backup failures for Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 virtual machines

    We've been seeing strange errors with Volume Shadow Copy services on our Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 host. It appears to be failing on a strange mountpoint in the C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ folders, which I believe is used by VSS to mount a writeable image file. To summarize: The Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Writer continually goes into a failed retryable state The Virtual Server log reports errors during the Post Backup phase VSS reports errors backing up a mount point of unknown origins The mount point causes NTFS and ftdisk errors The host is x86 Windows Server 2003 Standard, SP2. The virtual machine is the same. Both use basic disks. Here is the writer state: Writer name: 'Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Writer' Writer Id: {76afb926-87ad-4a20-a50f-cdc69412ddfc} Writer Instance Id: {78df98e2-bf19-4804-890b-15865efef3bd} State: [11] Failed Last error: Retryable error From the Virtual Server log: Virtual Server - Vss Writer - Event ID: 1035: The VSS writer for Virtual Server failed during the PostBackup phase. The guest shadow copies did not get exposed on the host machine, after mounting all the virtual hard disks of the virtual machine VMACHINE. From the Application log: VSS - None - Event ID: 12290: Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: GetVolumeInformationW( \\?\Volume{fb84bae7-87f5-11dd-9832-001cc4961ca6}\,NULL,0, NULL,NULL,[0x00000000], , 260) == 0x0000045d. hr = 0x00000000. From the System log: Ntfs - Disk - Event ID: 55: The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. My current theory is that VSS creates a mount point for an image file of the VHD, then the software panics for some reason, leaving everything in an inconsistent state. Removing the mount point doesn't resolve the problem. All of the other disks check out fine with CHKDSK. There's no exclusion option for VHDs or to turn off online backups. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before or point me in the right direction for getting more information about the mount point and it's origins? I haven't been able to trace what application is creating that mount point.

    Hi, I'm setting up a SQL Replication strategy, using MSSQL2008 with peer-to-peer publications (2 servers, each one subscribes to the other). I followed this HOWTO from MSDN, and the setup seems to be working fine: add a record to one table on server A, query on server B shows the new record. So far, so good. EDIT OK, so after some more research and setting up with different databases etc, I found out that the calculated 'Id' column of the Templates table is the culprit. I don't know why, but the replication doesn't seem to allow calculated columns (which are also primary key). It works now too, without the 'Id' column, and using the NodeId and LocalId as a combined PK. So now the question is, why isn't it allowed to have a calculated column as PK for replication with conflict detection?

  • VMWare Server Windows 2008 NAT Problem

    At my new job our workstations run Windows Server 2008. However, for the specific task for which I've been hired, I need to set up a couple Linux VMs. So I grabbed the free VMWare Server and created an Ubuntu image and a Slackware image. (The former to more closely mimic the production server, the latter because I'm more familiar with it.) For desktop security purposes I need to use NAT for the network access (I would have preferred bridged, but I'm told that would go against some policy here and my whole workstation would be sandboxed from the switch). However, I can't seem to get it working right. I can ping out from the VMs to LAN addresses as well as internet addresses. I can resolve DNS names. However, attempts to use a web browser or perform any kind of higher-level interaction like that just time out. Googling around yesterday led me to various workarounds that were similar, but didn't solve my specific situation. (For example, Norton firewall blocking the connection on the host, or even the Windows firewall.) I also saw some forum posts where people said it's a known issue with VMWare and Windows Server 2008 (and Windows 7). So far I haven't been able to find a suggestion that gets me past this roadblock. I'm really not very familiar with managing a Windows Server 2008 box, so it's possible there's just some security setting somewhere that I need to modify. Does anybody have any suggestions on where I should look? UPDATE: I'm now looking at the "Network and Sharing Center" on the host workstation and it shows "VMWare Network Adapter VMnet8" (which is what I'm using) as an "Unidentified network" with "No Internet access." Looks like I can't modify ICS under the group policy. Any suggestions on how to allow this connection to have internet access?

    Every time I download something using IE8 (running on Win 7) I get asked where to save the file, I choose my downloads folder, then the download continues and when complete I get the following message: "C:\ is not accessible. Access Denied." And I so I can't access any files I download. So why on earth would IE8 be trying to write to the root, and where can I change this?   • Error installing dotnet framework 3.5 SP1 on windows 2008

    Getting a really wierd error. One of the developers tried to install Windows 2008 as a Virtual PC. He has also run windows update. When he tries to install dotnet framework 3.5 SP1 he gets the following error: [09/25/09,12:48:26] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS): [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS). MSI returned error code 1 [09/25/09,12:48:34] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS) is not installed. I though that dotnet framework was installed automatically with windows update on windows 2008. So how could it be missing? Thanks. Shiraz EDIT We also have the same problem on a VPC that had dotnet framework 3.5 installed and working OK. I have tried removing all versions of dotnet framework, using the following clean up tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx I then downloaded and tried to install dotnet framework 2.0 SP1, from this location: http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?familyid=79BC3B77-E02C-4AD3-AACF-A7633F706BA5&displaylang=en The error I now get is: "This product is not supported on the Vista Operating System" EDIT Thanks for the help, have given an up vote to everyone. In the end our problem was that we had installed Windows Server 2008 from an older ISO image, on this everything worked fine untill we tried to install framework 3.5 SP1. We reinstalled Windows from a new image, and it worked OK.

    I'm trying to image a SATA laptop hard drive, using DriveImageXML, that is attached to my computer via a USB adapter. I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit. DriveXML is returning: Could not initialize Windows Volume Shadow Service (VSS). ERROR C:\Program Files (x86)\Runtime Software\Drivelmage XML\vss64.exe failed to start. ERROR TIMEOUT Make sure VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. Click Help for more information. VSSVC.EXE is running in Task Manager, as is VSS64.exe. Looking at the FAQ on the Runtime webpage this turned up: Please verify in Settings-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Services that the following services are enabled: MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Volume Shadow Copy Also make sure you are able to stop and start these services. Possible reasons for VSS failures: For VSS to work, at least one volume in your computer must be NTFS. If you use only FAT drives, VSS will not function. The required NTFS volume does not need to be identical with the volume you want to image. You should make sure that VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. If the problems persist, registering "oleaut.dll" and "oleaut32.dll" using "regsvr32" might help. Both of those services are running and can be started and stopped without issue. Using "regsvr32" to register ""oleaut32.dll" returns successful, but "oleaut.dll" returns: The module "oleaut.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found. Some other information that might be relevant. Browsing to the drive is successful, but accessing certain folders returns an "access" error. Windows runs a permissions adder that adds the current user profile to the NFTS permissions. Could this be the cause of the issue? DriveImage XML is running as Administrator. Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure I got this to work with certain PDFs, but is it really possible that certain PDFs are made incorrectly and cannot be converted? I'm tired of manually converting breaks from rough notes to either paragraphs or line breaks for release as HTML, and tired of converting spaces to breaking or non-breaking ones. There are standard Unicode code points for the difference - what editor lets me use almost plain ASCII text but with builtin support and understanding for Unicode paragraph and non-breaking space characters? And ideally will let me save straight to either plain text UTF8 or to a file of plain HTML paragraphs?

There are standard Unicode code points for the difference - what editor lets me use almost plain ASCII text but with builtin support and understanding for Unicode paragraph and non-breaking space characters? And ideally will let me save straight to either plain text UTF8 or to a file of plain HTML paragraphs?

  • Too many connections to 212.192.255.240

    Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. UPDATE: This is the HiJackThis log file and I can't find any thing weird. Also, the program is also trying to create connections to 91.205.127.63, which is also from Russia.     Hello. I just completed development of a SharePoint site on a virtual server and am currently in the process of granting users from a different domain to the site. The SharePoint domain is SHAREPOINT, and the domain with the users I want to give access to is COMPANY. I have provided them with a link to the site and added them as users via SharePoint, which is all I thought I would need to do. However, when they go to the link, the site shows them a SharePoint error page.   • How to lock Windows7 from installing anything.

    A family member continually needs me to reinstall his PC after it gets viruses and spyware. He claims that he never downloads anything but evidence suggests otherwise. Unless there is some way that watching 'videos' can get spyware on there. AFAIK the computer is kept up to date. Possible solutions? Make a login where its impossible for him to install anything. Windows 7 standard account doesn't appear to be enough. Is a standard account enough here? I tried this once before and he still seemed to get IE toolbars installed up the wazoo Somehow make an automated image where if he 'messes up' or even on log off the computer restores the whole drive image. Similar to what I've seen in Kinko's Something I've not thought of.... And I know you are all going to say 'stop fixing it you are an enabler'... yes I know but I'm not going to have another fight with my wife over helping her family... right now I'm doing this to keep her happy not the idiot with the 'video' addiction ;-) So the name of the game is minimizing my overhead.

  • Outlook Anywhere inconsistencies with authentication methods

    So I've read this question and attempted just about every other workaround I've found online. Problem seems completely illogical to me, anyways: SBS 2011, vanilla install; haven't touched anything in IIS or Exchange outside of what's been done through the checklist (brand new domain, completely new customer) except to import an existing wildcard certificate for *.example.com (which is valid, Remote Web Workplace and Outlook Web Access work fine). On the two test machines and one production machine running a mixture of Windows XP Pro, Windows 7 and Outlook 2003 through to 2010, I've had no problem saving the password after configuring Outlook Anywhere using the wrong authentication method. I repeat, I have had no issues using the wrong authentication method on these test machines; password saves the first time, no problem, can verify it exists in the credentials manager (Start Run control userpasswords2), close Outlook, reboot, go make a sammie, come back, credentials are still saved. When I say wrong, it's because I was choosing NTLM and Exchange (under Exchange Console Server Configuration Client Access) was set by default to use Basic. On two completely different machines setup by a co-worker, they had (under my guidance) used NTLM as well... except that frustratingly, Outlook would always ask for a password. One machine was Windows XP with Outlook 2010, the other was Windows 7 with Outlook 2003. When these two machines were set to use Basic -- the correct settings -- the option to save was there and now works without issue. Puzzled by how my machines could possibly work with the wrong authentication, I then went into one of them and changed the authentication method to Basic. Now here's where it gets a little crazy: if I go under Outlook and change the authentication to use the correct setting (Basic) it fails to save the password and Outlook prompts every time (without a "remember me" checkbox). I have not had a chance to change it to Basic on the other two machines to see if this is just a fluke or not, but something just isn't right here. My two hunches are either a missing/installed KB Update or perhaps a local security policy. I should add that none of the 5 test machines in the equation here have ever been joined to the domain.

  • Where should CentOS users get /usr/share/virtio-win/drivers for virt-v2v?

    I need to migrate a number of virtual machines from VMware ESX to CentOS 6 KVM hypervisors. Ultimately, I wrote an RPM spec file that solved my problem at https://github.com/fasrc/virtio-win/blob/master/virtio-win.spec but I'm not sure if there's another RPM in base CentOS or EPEL (something standard) I should be using instead. Originally, I was getting this "No root device found in this operating system image" error when attemting to migrate a Window 2008 VM. . . [root@kvm01b ~]# virt-v2v -ic 'esx://my-vmware-hypervisor.example.com/' \ -os transferimages --network default my-vm virt-v2v: No root device found in this operating system image. . . . but I solved this with a simply yum install libguestfs-winsupport since the docs say: If you attempt to convert a virtual machine using NTFS without the libguestfs-winsupport package installed, the conversion will fail. Next I got an error about missing drivers for Windows 2008. . . [root@kvm01b ~]# virt-v2v -ic 'esx://my-vmware-hypervisor.example.com/' \ -os transferimages --network default my-vm my-vm_my-vm: 100% [====================================]D virt-v2v: Installation failed because the following files referenced in the configuration file are required, but missing: /usr/share/virtio-win/drivers/amd64/Win2008 . . . and I resolved this by grabbing an iso from Fedora at http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/virtio-win/latest/ as recommended by http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/WindowsGuestDrivers/Download_Drivers and building an RPM from it with this spec file: https://github.com/fasrc/virtio-win/blob/master/virtio-win.spec Now, virt-v2v exits without error: [root@kvm01b ~]# virt-v2v -ic 'esx://my-vmware-hypervisor.example.com/' \ -os transferimages --network default my-vm my-vm_my-vm: 100% [====================================]D virt-v2v: my-vm configured with virtio drivers. [root@kvm01b ~]# Now, my question is, rather that the virtio-win RPM from the spec file I wrote, is there some other more standard RPM in base CentOS or EPEL that will resolve the error above?
