    I have had a talk with a friend of mine about the relative vulnerability of different types of IT workers to unexpected unemployment (e.g. layoffs, company going out of business, obsolete skills etc.) as it seems COBOL developers (or maintainers?) seems very secure in their positions, regardless of the state if the economy or even how good they are. With so much critical COBOL code being around on the one side and the deminishing number of COBOL know-hows on the other , it actually makes sense to recommend someone starting their way in the IT world and looking for a relativity secure job to study and intern in COBOL! what do you think ?

When we hit a 0 in the array (i.e. Hit(0, 0), Hit(1, 1), but not Hit(3, 0)) I would like all the adjacent zeros to the zero we hit to be incremented by 10.     For my client's custom-built CRM, I want users (technicians) to be notified of changes to marked cases via email. This warrants a simple subscription mapping table between users and cases and automated emails to be sent every time a change is made to a case from within the logging method. How do I send 10-100 emails to subscribed users without bogging down my logging method? My SMTP server is on a peer on my LAN, so sends should be quick, but ideally this should be handled by an external queuing process. I can have a cron job send any outstanding emails every 10 minutes, but for this specific client cases are quite time-sensitive and instant notification (as instant as email can be) would be great. How can I send bulk notification emails from within ASP.NET MVC without bogging down my logging method?

    My power button is non responsive I am getting LED for charging. I've taken it apart before to change the dc jack and it was fine and a few months later it just powered off. I try to power back on and is goes to start up then shuts off. I just took it apart and came to find the ribbon cable connecting the power button/speakers cover is barely hanging on do I have to replace the whole thing or is there a way to replace the ribbon cable?

    In an xpage I would like to be able to decide which custom controls have to be rendered or loaded. I have a custom control named 1, another 2, 3 etc When a scoped variable has the value 1, custom control 1 should be displayed/rendered/loaded. A value of 2 , custom control 2 has to be displayed. etc I came up with following sollution : I calculate if that custom control has to be loaded or not depending on the value of the scoped variable. Since I have 8 of these custom controls on 1 page I was wondering ,since only 1 out of those 8 custom controls have to be rendered ,if there isn't a better way with less code to do the same job. Won't my sollution put a lot of load to my server ?

  • Lots of dropped packages when tcpdumping on busy interface

    My challenge I need to do tcpdumping of a lot of data - actually from 2 interfaces left in promiscuous mode that are able to see a lot of traffic. To sum it up Log all traffic in promiscuous mode from 2 interfaces Those interfaces are not assigned an IP address pcap files must be rotated per ~1G When 10 TB of files are stored, start truncating the oldest What I currently do Right now I use tcpdump like this: tcpdump -n -C 1000 -z /data/compress.sh -i any -w /data/livedump/capture.pcap $FILTER The $FILTER contains src/dst filters so that I can use -i any. The reason for this is, that I have two interfaces and I would like to run the dump in a single thread rather than two. compress.sh takes care of assigning tar to another CPU core, compress the data, give it a reasonable filename and move it to an archive location. I cannot specify two interfaces, thus I have chosen to use filters and dump from any interface. Right now, I do not do any housekeeping, but I plan on monitoring disk and when I have 100G left I will start wiping the oldest files - this should be fine. And now; my problem I see dropped packets. This is from a dump that has been running for a few hours and collected roughly 250 gigs of pcap files: 430083369 packets captured 430115470 packets received by filter 32057 packets dropped by kernel <-- This is my concern How can I avoid so many packets being dropped? These things I did already try or look at Changed the value of /proc/sys/net/core/rmem_max and /proc/sys/net/core/rmem_default which did indeed help - actually it took care of just around half of the dropped packets. I have also looked at gulp - the problem with gulp is, that it does not support multiple interfaces in one process and it gets angry if the interface does not have an IP address. Unfortunately, that is a deal breaker in my case. Next problem is, that when the traffic flows though a pipe, I cannot get the automatic rotation going. Getting one huge 10 TB file is not very efficient and I don't have a machine with 10TB+ RAM that I can run wireshark on, so that's out. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe even a better way of doing my traffic dump altogether.

    Some of us here(or is it just me?) enjoy programming. Even if we're not being paid for it, and in some cases, even though the end result will not do anything for us. For example, many people do the Project Euler problems just for fun, and in the end nothing was really "accomplished" materially. What is it that makes us enjoy programming? How is programming different from another job? You don't see an accountant going home to do some accounting on their own time just for the pure joy of it. How are we different? (also, if anyone has some ideas on how to tag this, then please do correct it for me.. )

    This is one of those things that looks like it might have a simple solution but is rather time consuming once you start investigating PyTile, Xnee and the likes. I know, I should just use a tiling window manager etc., but I suppose it can be done in OpenBox, and I am just hoping somebody already has a working solution. Ok, so I want to press a key combination while I am in an OpenBox session (Lubuntu LXDE to be more precise) and have my terminal appear below my then resized Chromium window (say ~60% Chromium and ~40% Terminal).

    I am trying to catch any https traffic to the front of my site so: https://www.domain.com is redirected to: http://www.domain.com However other subdomains need to be redirected elsewhere. For the most part this is all working, apart from the https - http redirection. Here's my .htaccess file at the moment: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} on RewriteRule (.*) http://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain\.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [L,R=301] RewriteCond "%{HTTP_HOST}" !^www.* [NC] RewriteCond "%{HTTP_HOST}" ^([^\.]+).*$ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://secure.domain.com/a/login/%1 [L,R=301] It would seem that this bit: RewriteCond %{HTTPS} on RewriteRule (.*) http://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} isn't working as I would imagine. In fact it doesn't seem to redirect at all. In another subdirectory I have the opposite in effect which works fine: RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} so my thinking is the opposite should have done the job, but seemingly not. Any thoughts anyone?

  • Process keeps creating dump files

    We have a Delphi application running on a terminal server that keeps generating dump files. For the same PID, it keeps creating dump files with an interval of around 1 second until the process is killed manually. Another weird thing is the name of the dump files: ±_minidump_default_pid_7916_tid_x6590_2012_6_18_13_48_40.dmp ÷_minidump_default_pid_7916_tid_x6590_2012_6_18_13_48_42.dmp k_minidump_default_pid_7916_tid_x6590_2012_6_18_13_48_39.dmp Ô_minidump_default_pid_7916_tid_x6590_2012_6_18_13_48_41.dmp Ž_minidump_default_pid_7916_tid_x6590_2012_6_18_13_48_40.dmp The dump files aren't telling us much and we would like to have a suggestion where we should start looking.

  • connecting clients to server with emulator on different computers

    I am writing an application that communicates using sockets. I have a server running on one android emulator on a computer, then i have 2 other clients running on android emulators on 2 other computers. I am trying to get the 2 clients to connect to the server. This works when i run the server and clients on the same computer, but when i attempt to do this on the same wifi network and on separate computers it gives me the following error. The client and server code is posted below. A lot is stripped out just to show the important stuff. Also, after the server starts i telnet into the server and run these commands redir add tcp:5000:6000 (i have also tried without doing the redir but it still says the same thing). Then i start the clients and get the error. Thanks for the help! Both the 5000 port and 6000 port are open on my router.     I'm usually using Thunderbird, but for testing purposes have to start Outlook every now and then. Afterwards, Thunderbird informs me that it is no longer the default client, which it should have remained. How to stop Outlook 2010 from being so insolent? edit In fact, Outlook does not change any of the settings I checked so far (it doesn't re-register files, and mailto: links still open Thunderbird, so I'm rather confused at what Thunderbird considers to be modified by Outlook

    I'm making a little bot in C#. At the moment it works pretty well, it can load text from a file and type it for you. But for now, I need to manualy click the textfield to put the focus on it, remaximize my form and then click the Type-button. After the typing, I need to manualy slide the scorebar and press submit. I'd like to know how I can move my mouse with C# and if possible, if possible I'd like to load the mouse positions from a xml-file. I've got 2 labels that show my X & Y coordinates. To capture them outside the form, I press and hold my Left Mouse Button and 'drag' it outside the form to the correct place.   • Java and Different Types of Stacks

    Currently the only stack I know anything about is Vector, I normally use this in place of an array but I understand that there is other types of stacks and they all suit different jobs. The project I am currently working on requires me to be inserting objects in a certain position inside a stack, not always the front of the stack and I am under the impression that a Vector may not be the best class for this job. Could somebody please give me a brief description of the other types of stacks available to me with the Java language and their advantages and disadvantages? Are these names homogeneous? E.g. Are they only used in the Java language or are they used as general terms in Computer Science? Thank you

One of the tasks I usually add to make command is tar, for example the following instruction does the job: tar: tar -cvf $(PROGNAME).tar $(SRCS) Makefile My question is: How can CMake be used to generate personalized commands like tar? I would like to see some code samples. For the full functionality it would be useful to create project's components and be able to use them as parameters.     I have to rewrite and greatly modify parts of a legacy COBOL application. The COBOL source-code is available (around 100.000 lines of copy & pasted code mixed with GOTOs). Some more details on the system: It is a general management system controlling transactions, bank management, customer data and employees of the company I work for. The COBOL-powered database is about 4 Terabytes distributed over 50 old HDDs. (But messing around with them is the sysadmins job) They are using COBOL85 only. Now I have two options: Rewrite and refactor 50% of the old COBOL system, or use X86 assembly. Should I use X86 assembler or COBOL?

  • Slow Client connection blocks Mongrel

    I have a Apache + Haproxy + Mongrel setup for my rails application. When I hit a particular server page, mongrel takes around 100ms to process the request and I get the page in around 5 secs due to data transmission time on my slow home connection. Now I see that during these 5 secs of data transmission, mongrel does not serve any other request. I am surprised as that means mongrel is serving the response html to the client and is blocked till the client receives it. Shouldn't serving response be the job of Apache? This puts serious bottleneck in the no of requests Mongrel can serve as that would depend on the speed of the client connection. Is there any way that html generated by mongrel is served by apache/haproxy or any other web server like nginx? I wonder how the other high traffic sites are managing it?

  • Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10048)

    From what I can tell this is recent error that has started to occur on my localserver: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10048). My site will work for a while then it will randomly throw this error then start working again. Any advice on how to fix this? I have searched online and most people claim that it is a windows based error which needs a registry fix but I wanted to see if anyone else has encountered this issue and has any better advice? Thanks!

    I would like to see the changes that my co-workers have made before I accept the incoming changes. So I start by getting the status svn st -u ...which tells me that I've got an incoming change * 9803 incomingChanges.html M 9803 localChanges.html M * 9803 localAndIncoming.html I can see what I've changed svn diff localChanges.html ...but how can I diff incomingChanges.html and/orlocalAndIncoming.html to show what has been changed, and how it's different than my working copy?
