• Implementing a form of port knocking + Phone Factor = 2 Factor auth for RDP?

  I have been looking into how to secure a publicly-available RDP endpoint and want to implement our two-factor authentication RADIUS server, PhoneFactor. I would like to implement the following process: User opens up web app in browser In web app, user enters username + password, initiates RADIUS auth Phone factor calls user to complete auth Once user is authenticated, port 3389 is opened on user's IP on pfSense firewall. After some amount of time, firewall rule is removed for that IP I would like to know the following: Is this a typical setup? If it is a bad idea, please explain why. If it is possible, are there any packages that assist with this? Specifically, the third step, where the appropriate firewall rule would need to be added... Edit: I am aware of TS Web Gateway, but I want the users to be able to use the traditional RDP client...

• What could cause Citrix Xenapp to stop streaming applications after the server's IP address changed?

  We have a Citrix XenApp 5.0 server running on Windows 2008, and today we moved ISPs so our IP addresses changed. The IP addresses have propagated, the XenApp server is running, and internally we can connect to the server, choose an app, and have it streamed without issue. Externally we are only able to authenticate to the server and choose an app, but the app never launches in the client. I'm guessing there's a hand-off between the part of XenApp that authenticates a user and shows what apps they can launch, and the part that does the app streaming, and that second part is hard-coded to use an the old ip address. Any ideas why this could be happening?

• dhclient configures /etc/resolv.conf with invalid entry

  I'm trying to figure out why running dhclient on my interface sets /etc/resolv conf to the ip number of my gateway(router). This entry is invalid and each and every time causes inability to resolve any address. I would like to: stop dhclient from overwriting the /etc/resolv.conf or make dhclient write there the valid dns ip from my router More on the environment: I'm using virtual Debian Wheezy as a client system on Windows Seven x64. It is run by Virtualbox with networking mode set to bridged (all packets from debian are injected to my network interface on windows). If I manually configure the /etc/resolv.conf then everything works fine. Doing this on every boot is quite annoying.. PS I know I can write a script to do it for me, but this is not the solution I want. //edit router ip: 192.168.1.100 /etc/resolv.conf AFTER running dhclient eth0: "nameserver 192.168.1.100" what I would like the /etc/resolv.conf to look like: "nameserver 89.202.xxxx" (I don't have to provide the real ip do I? )

• how do I write a functional spec quickly and efficiently

  So I just read some fabulous articles by Joel on specs here. (Was written in 2000!!) I read all 4 parts, but Im looking for some methodical approaches to writing my specs. Im the only lonely dev, working on this fairly complicated app (or family of apps) for a very well known finance company. I've never made something this serious, I started out writing something like a bad spec, an overview of some sorts, and it has wasted a LOT of my time. Ive also made 3 mockup-kinda-thingies for my client so I have a good understanding of what they want. Also released a preview (a throw away working app with the most basic workflow), and Ive only written and tested some of the very core/base systems. I think the mistake Ive been making so far is not writing a detailed spec, so Im getting to it now. So the whole thing comprises of An MVC website (for admins & data viewing) 2 Silverlight modules (For 2 specific tasks) 1 Desktop Application Im totally short on time, resources and need to get this done quick, also, need to make sure these guys read it up equally quick and painlessly. So how do I go about it, Im looking for any tips, any real world stuff, how do you guys usually do it? Do you make a mock screenie of every dialog/form/page? Im thinking of making a dummy asp.net web forms project, then filling in html files in folders and making it look like my mvc url structure. Then having a section in the spec for the website and write up a page for every URL Ive got with a screenie. For my win forms app, Ive made somewhat of a demo Win Form project, would I then put in a dialog or stucture everything as I would in the real app and then screen shot it?

• How to Configure a vm on the same machine to do remote desktop [closed]

  I want to achieve following: (Note I'd like to get this done first of all with Win7 as both host and vm OS) Install Windows 7/xp/Windows 8 VM on Windows 7/Windows 8 host machine Configure it so that I can connect to it via remote desktop. This is because I use a screen reader software and audio output directly from VMs is not highly responsive. My software has a feature that it can connect to its copy on the remote machine (during rdp session) and then start receiving the text description which it translates into audio on the client (host in this case) machine. I want to know: Which VM software can let me do this – VMWare/Ms Virtual PC or VirtualBox If it is possible with every VM software, could you give an example of how to do this with anyone of these 3? Specifically, I know how to install Windows on VM (on both VMWare/Virtual PC), but don't really know how to configure a network such that I can remote into that VM from host OS. Hope it clarifies what I'm trying to achieve.

• Any way to void document upload when user cancels?

  We have developed a set of metadata fields for the user to complete during the file upload process (MOSS). What happens is that the user chooses Upload, then specifies the file on his system. Sometimes, when he sees what metadata data is required, he clicks Cancel, knowing that he cannot supply the data at that time. The file uploads, anyway, and is in the library without any attached metadata. Our client finds this unacceptable, but I haven't found a way to cancel the actual upload when the user tells us he no longer wants to do so.

• Microsoft Outlook x Lotus Notes in enterprise environment

  I'm working in company (several thousands client computers) using tools like MS Outlook + Exchange + Sharepoint + Communication server. Now our mother company shared the idea that everything should be moved to IBM Lotus Notes + Domino. The reason for this is that Outlook based solution is too expensive (it is the official statement even they don't want to replace MS Office yet). Other reason probably is that they received a lot of licences for Lotus when they bought IBM servers to new data center. My question is: Is this reasonable change or is it just some management game and IBM's marketing? Will it really save money? Other question: Is Lotus better then MS solution? This is serious question, it is not mentioned to open any kind of flame war. I just don't believe the decission and I have never used Lotus tools.

• How to Implement Complex Form Data?

  I'm supposed to implement a relatively complex form that looks like follows, but has at least four more pages requiring the user to fill in all necessary information for the tracks: This data will need to be sent to the server, which is implemented using Dropwizard. I'm looking for best practices on how to upload and send such a complex form with potentially dozens of songs to the server. An ideal solution would be to utilize Jackson to convert a json string into my data objects, but I don't get the impression that this is possible with binary data.

• How do "custom software companies" deal with technical debt?

  What are "custom software companies"? By "custom software companies" I mean companies that make their money primarily from building custom, one off, bits of software. Example are agencies or middle-ware companies, or contractors/consultants like Redify. What's the opposite of "custom software companies"? The oposite of the above business model are companies that focus on long term products, whether they be deployable desktop/mobile apps, or SaaS software. A sure fire way to build up technical debt: I work for a company that attempts to focus on a suite of SaaS products. However, due to certain constraints we sometimes end up bending to the will of certain clients and we end building bits of custom software that can only be used for that client. This is a sure fire way to incur technical debt. Now we have a bit of software to maintain that adds nothing to our core product. If custom work is a sure fire way to build technical debt, how do agencies handle it? So that got me thinking. Companies who don't have a core product as the center of their business model, well they're always doing custom software work. How do they cope with the notion of technical debt? How does it not drive them into technical bankruptcy?

• Recommended RAM and disc space for Oracle 11g on Windows

  I need to provide the recommended amount of RAM and disc space (divided in two partitions) so the customer can create an appropriate virtual machine to run Oracle. All I could find in the documentation was a brief listing with minimum RAM and typical/advanced install types. The virtual machine will run latest Oracle Standard Edition One (11g release 2 so far) under Windows Server 2008 x64 and will host a reasonably low traffic web application. How much RAM and disc must I ask for in order to be safe? (Feel free to ask for further details if I've omitted something relevant.) Update: Rough estimations: Database size: 10 MB after installation Growth rate: +3MB per day on average Size of database 'active' data: (not sure of what this means, there's not actual archive so I guess all data is current) Amount of data written per second in peak hours: a few KB Number of client sessions: 3 or 4 at most Frequency and response size of most heavy requests: some reports make heavy table JOINS that need up to 20 seconds to complete but they won't return more than a few thousand rows with plain text. The app also handles BLOBs (typical size from 50KB to 200KB)

• Semantic Form Markup for Yes or No Questions

  I frequently receive mock-ups of HTML forms with the following prototype: Some long winded yes or no question?   (o) Yes   ( ) No The (o) and ( ) in this prototype represent radio buttons. My personal view is that if the question has only a true or false value then it should be a check box. That said, I have seen this sort of "layout" from almost every designer I've ever worked with. If I were not to question their decision, or question the client's decision, I'd probably mark it up like this: <p class="pseudo_label">Some long winded yes or no question?</p> <input type="radio" name="the_question" id="the_question_yes" value="1"> <label for="the_question_yes" class="after_radio">Yes</label> <input type="radio" name="the_question" id="the_question_no" value="0"> <label for="the_question_no" class="after_radio">No</label> I really don't want to do that. I want to push back and convince them that this should really be a check box and not two radio buttons. But my question is, if I can't convince them – you're welcome to help me try – how should I code that original design requirement such that it is semantic and at least understandable for screen reader users? If I were able to convince my tormentors to change their minds, I would likely code it in the following fashion: <label for="the_question">Some long winded yes or no question?</label> <input type="checkbox" name="the_question" id="the_question" value="1"> What do you think about this issue? • Non-Registry Fix for Secondary Mailboxes Sent Items

  There is a known issue with Outlook and Exchange where "secondary" mailboxes which are mounted in the same profile, e.g. "John Doe" + CorpMailbox1, CorpMailbox2, CorpMailbox3 will place "sent items" from the secondary mailboxes (e.g. CorpMailbox1) in the user's (e.g. "John Doe") Sent Items folder. There is a registry value (something like DelegateSentItems) to semi-fix this, but I'm looking for an Exchange-side solution. It seems like, at some point, an admin made CC rules to fix this, and for the mailboxes where I see a BCC rule: any item sent to [address] BCC to [address]. The behavior "fixes" the issue, but when I duplicate this work-around for new shared mailboxes, the email ends up in the Inbox and not the Sent Items for the shared mailbox. I don't believe there is any outlook/client-side shenanigans going on, as the intended behavior for the older mailboxes works for new PCs/Users (new imagse) without any Outlook Mailbox Rules.

  Our WSUS server stopped working until the patch related to .NET 4.0 was installed, at which point clients started downloading and updating again. However, the WSUS mmc console occasionally disconnects when performing various tasks, such as running automatic approval rules; also wsusutil checkhealth creates the following events: 13042: Self-update is not working. 12002: The Reporting Web Service is not working. 12012: The API Remoting Web Service is not working. 12032: The Server Synchronization Web Service is not working. 12022: The Client Web Service is not working. 12042: The SimpleAuth Web Service is not working. 12052: The DSS Authentication Web Service is not working. Apparently there are many possible causes for these events. I'm looking for a way to figure out what is wrong, so that I can fix it.

• Using a Mac to share a VPN connection

  I am using an iMac to share a wired network connection with other devices in my house. I am using Apple's built-in sharing functionality which works very well. I have also been using Tunnelblick as an OpenVPN client. The two technologies work great when they are not used together. The moment I connect to my VPN, sharing stops working on all other devices; the whole point of this setup was for me to share my VPN connection. Is there a way to make Internet connection sharing and OpenVPN work together on the Mac? I am using Snow Leopard.

Source artifacts and checked out, modified, checked in, all the history of changes is tracked by the VCS.  But what if the development tool stores the source/configuration artifacts not in your laptop's hard drive, but in some shared repository instead? Well, we definitely need a way for export/import our artifacts from/to this repository.   Oracle BI Publisher report development approach is based on such a shared repository model (catalog), and starting from BI Publisher 11.1.1.5 Oracle ships Catalog Utility, which can be utilized to export/import the reports from the command line.  To start using the BI Publisher Catalog Utility you should: Go to the file system of the server where BI Publisher binaries has been installed and locate the following file: <MW_HOME>/Oracle_BI1/clients/bipublisher/BIPCatalogUtil.zip Copy the file to your local filesystem and unzip it.   Say that I have an application running on one PC that is sending commands via SSH to another PC on the network (both machines running Linux). For example every time something happens on #1, I want to run a task on #2. In this setup, I have to create SSH connection on every single command. Is there any simple way to do this with basic unix tools without programming custom client/server application? Basically all I want is to establish a connection over SSH and then send one command after another.

  I had to deploy an application that was not written by me onto the above configuration. It is a rather bizarre hybrid of asp.net and classic asp and it's the classic asp that is proving troublesome. The client is having problems with 500 Internal Server Errors appearing and I can see some of these in the logs but I only get the error code and the page name but little else. What I would like to see is the actual error message to at least give me an idea what is going on (or not going on, depending on your point of view) I don't want to display errors in the browser as I don't know the code well enough and this could (for all I know) display some crazy code where the db password is hard-coded into the site.

  My customer requires bug resolution to be approved and tracked.  To minimize the overhead for developers I implemented a TFS 2010 server-side plug-in to automatically create a child resolution task for the bug when the “CCB” field is set to approved. The CCB field is a custom field.  I also added the story points field to the bug WIT for sizing purposes. Redundant tasks will not be created unless the bug title is changed or the prior task is closed. The program writes an audit trail to a log file visible in the TFS Admin Console Log view. • Email solution for new domain [on hold]

  I registered my domain at NameCheap, and have it hosted now at AWS Route 53. However, I'm at a loss for how now to set up sending transactional email. I hear Amazon SES is a good solution, but that requires me to verify my e-mail. I don't have email set up (no e-mail addresses at my domain nor a email client to receive the email verification). As an added wrinkle, I have my sitename.com bucket redirecting to www.sitename.com, and I'm hosting my site on Route 53 using www.sitename.com. However, does this screw things up if I need to switch my MX records since perhaps the 'www' throws things off (would it point to mail.www.sitename.com)?
