  • Why do i get a circular reference exception when calling to_json on an ActiveRecord::Relation

    In Rails 3 (beta 3 on 1.8.7), when calling to_json on a relation i get a circular reference exception. Converting that relation to an array first, and THEN calling to_json works. Code That fails: Model.where().to_json (Where model is any model in your Rails 3 app) Code that works: Model.where().to_a.to_json This can be reproed on the console. Has anyone else run in to this? Is this expected?

    When you have a domain object that needs to display as an interface control, like a drop down list, ifwdev suggested creating an extension method to add a .ToSelectList(). The originating object is a List of objects that have properties identical to the .Text and .Value properties of the drop down list. Basically, it's a List of SelectList objects, just not of the same class name. I imagine you could use reflection to turn the domain object into an interface object. Anyone have any suggestions for C# code that could do this? The SelectList is an MVC drop down list of SelectListItem. The idea of course is to do something like this in the view: <%= Html.DropDownList("City", (IEnumerable<SelectListItem>) ViewData["Cities"].ToSelectList() )

    Merely knowing the internal functionality of each approaches, and after reading a lot of posts, I still can't figure out if each one of them is just a matter of personnal preference for the developper or if they deserve different axes of productivity ? Does one of them should be applyed for some specific productivity needs or MS is just beeing kind offering three different flavours ? Should we consider CF as a sort of improvement over DBF or MF and thinking of it as a futur standard on wich spending a peculiar intelectual investment ... ? Is there a link showing a sort of synthetic table with un-passionate pros and cons for each approach, a little bit like for web-forms and MVC. Sorry for those who will find this question redondant. I know it is.

I would really prefer to use a generic. The workaround that I have come up with is to change the model type to be an object.     Talking about javax.crypto.Cipher; I was trying to encrypt data using Cipher.getInstance("RSA/None/NoPadding", "BC"); but I got the exception: ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: too much data for RSA block Looks like is something related to the "NoPadding", so, reading about padding, looks like CBC is the best approach to use here. I found at google something about "RSA/CBC/PKCS#7", what is this "PKCS#7"? And why its not listed on sun's standard algorithm names?

    I'm learning to apply MVP to a simple WinForms app (only one form) in C# and encountered an issue while creating the main presenter in static void Main(). Is it a good idea to expose a View from the Presenter in order to supply it as a parameter to Application.Run()? Currently, I've implemented an approach which allows me to not expose the View as a property of Presenter: static void Main() { IView view = new View(); Model model = new Model(); Presenter presenter = new Presenter(view, model); presenter.Start(); Application.Run(); } The Start and Stop methods in Presenter: public void Start() { view.Start(); } public void Stop() { view.Stop(); } The Start and Stop methods in View (a Windows Form): public void Start() { this.Show(); } public void Stop() { // only way to close a message loop called // via Application.Run(); without a Form parameter Application.Exit(); } The Application.Exit() call seems like an inelegant way to close the Form (and the application). The other alternative would be to expose the View as a public property of the Presenter in order to call Application.Run() with a Form parameter. static void Main() { IView view = new View(); Model model = new Model(); Presenter presenter = new Presenter(view, model); Application.Run(presenter.View); } The Start and Stop methods in Presenter remain the same. The current piece goes like this: ReportsThirdparty.find(:all, :conditions => {:site_id=>site_id, :campaign_id=>campaign_id, :size_id=>size_id}) Now, I need to add a range, but I am not sure how to do the BETWEEN or >= or <= operators. I guess what I need is something similar to: ReportsThirdparty.find(:all, :conditions => {:site_id=>site_id, :campaign_id=>campaign_id, :size_id=>size_id, :row_date=>"BETWEEN #{start_date} AND #{end_date}") Even if this did work, I know that using interpolation here would leave me subject to SQL injection attacks.

    For a simple rails application ( 1.86 /2.3.5) , lets say I run a simple scaffold script/generate scaffold blog title:string content:text published:date When I open up the new / edit view for the blog controller in index/new.html.erb , I see that the drop down enabler for date select has a date range of 2005 - 2015 , i.e 5 years +/- I tried to change this default behavior by introducing this code f.date_select :entered, :start_year => 1970, :end_year => 2020 Apparently this has no impact to the behavior mentioned above. How do I increase the date_select range which seems to be default?

If a form is open and the combo box data is already loaded, how do you refresh the contents of the combo box without the form having to be closed and reloaded? Do you have to do something on the Click event on the combo box? This would seem to be a potential slow down for the app if there is a hit to the database every time someone clicks on a combo box.
