• Navigating through a sea of hype

  This is a vague, open question, so if you have no interest in these, please leave now. A few years ago it seemed everyone thought the death of desktop software was imminent. Web applications were the future. Everyone would move to cloud-based software-as-a-service systems, and developing applications for specific end-user platforms like Windows would soon become something of a ghetto. Joel's "How Microsoft Lost the API War" was but one of many such pieces sounding the death knell for this way of software development. Flash-forward to 2010, and the hype is all around mobile devices, particularly the iPhone. Software-as-a-Service vendors--even small ones such as YCombinator startups--go out of their way to build custom applications for the iPhone and other smart phone devices; applications that can be quite sophisticated, that run only on specific hardware and software architectures and are thus inherently incompatible. Now some of you are probably thinking, "Well, only the decline of desktop software was predicted; mobile devices aren't desktops." But the term was used by those predicting its demise to mean laptops also, and really any platform capable of running a browser. What was promised was a world where HTML and related standards would supplant native applications and their inherent difficulties. We would all code to the browser, not the OS. But here we are in 2010 with the AppStore bulging and development for the iPad just revving up. A few days ago, I saw someone on Hacker News claim that the future of computing was entirely in small, portable devices. Apparently the future is underpowered, requires dexterous thumbs and induces near-sightedness. How do those who so vehemently asserted one thing now assert the opposite with equal vehemence, without making even the slightest admission of error? And further, how are we as developers supposed to sift through all of this? I bought into the whole web-standards utopianism that was in vogue back in '06-'07 and now feel like it was a mistake. Is there some formula one can apply rather than a mere appeal to experience?

• Does the WMI event Win32_VolumeChangeEvent work on Windows XP

  I'm trying to use the following c# code to detect the attached/removed event of usb mass storage devices. I'm using the Win32_VolumeChangeEvent. // Initialize an event watcher and subscribe to events that match this query var _watcher = new ManagementEventWatcher("select * from Win32_VolumeChangeEvent"); _watcher.EventArrived += OnDeviceChanged; _watcher.Start(); void OnDeviceChanged(object sender, EventArrivedEventArgs args) { Console.WriteLine(args.NewEvent.GetText(TextFormat.Mof)); } The problem is that this works fine on Vista but it doesn't work on XP at all (no events received). The Microsoft documentation says that this should work (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa394516(VS.85).aspx). I googled for this quite a while and found other that have this problem too. But I also found a couple of articles which claim that this kind of query (mostly in vbscript) works with XP. But I cannot find some offical information from microsoft for this issue and I can't believe that Microsoft have overlooked this issue for three service packs. So my question is: has anybody used the Win32_VolumeChangeEvent with success on XP or can provide a link/explanation why it shouldn't work on XP?

• Merge Word Documents (Office Interop & .NET), Keeping Formatting

  I'm having some difficulty merging multiple word documents together using Microsoft Office Interop Assemblies (Office 2007) and ASP.NET 3.5. I'm able to merge the documents, but some of my formatting is missing (namely the fonts and images). • Cast exception when trying to create new Task Schedueler task.

  I'm attempting to create a new task in the Windows Task Scheduler in C#. What I've got so far is pretty much a copy and paste of http://bartdesmet.net/blogs/bart/archive/2008/02/23/calling-the-task-scheduler-in-windows-vista-and-windows-server-2008-from-managed-code.aspx Everything compiles just fine but come run time I get the following exception: Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to interface type 'TaskScheduler.ITimeTrigger'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID '{B45747E0-EBA7-4276-9F29-85C5BB300006}' failed due to the following error: No such interface supported (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004002 (E_NOINTERFACE)). Also, I should add that I'm using VS 2010 and I had to set the project to either be for x86 or x64 CPU's instead of the usual "Any CPU" because it kept giving me a BadImageFormatException. I doubt that's related to my current problem, but just in case I thought I might as well mention it.

• iCal file that will update the attendee list?

  So I want to add an iCal file to a web page, so that people can add an event to their calendars. But when I view the event in my calendar (Outlook 2007) I want to see everyone who will be attending. How can I do that? I just started experimenting with this, I used Outlook's Save As to create an iCal file for a single event. That works, I can link to that file and other people can add the event to their calendars. But it doesn't tell me who has added it.   Hi, I've got a user control that I'm loading into a Window dynamically - I wanted to set the Window so that it didn't have a size and then I thought the window to resize accordingly depending on the UserControl. However it dosn't - can anyone assist please? I've made a very basic example - I've cut out the dynamic bits and just put a UserControl in a Window. What do I need to do to get the window to be tight around the UserControl?   I deployed some SSRS reports created in Visual Studio 2008 to localhost:8080/ReportServer. ( Using VS 2008 .NET , Version 9.0.21022.8, SQL Server 2008 and XP Prof.) Calling them in the Webbrowser works fine, but now I'm trying to use them in an ASP.NET app with ReportViewer in VS 2008 and using local ASP.NET Development Server.   Hello everybody. On my wordpress website one little thing doesn't work. Sometimes the Webserver adds the port number 16080 in the URL, which leads to an error (network timeout). Wrong: http://www.example.com:16080/about-us/weekly-program/?month=may&yr=2010 Correct: http://www.example.com/about-us/weekly-program/?month=may&yr=2010 Has someone a "Server port 16080 problem fix"? Is it possible, that I need to add a ServerName directive to the config file to tell the domain name of the server? Cheers Juri !!!update!!! • Problems compiling peazip on OSX

  I'm having some problems with compiling Peazip on OSX (10.6). I emailed the Peazip developer and he said he probably couldn't help me too much as the error seems to be OSX specific and he doesn't have access to an OSX machine any more. The compiler I'm using is Lazarus as the source is in Pascal. The actual compile process seems to go ok, but when I run the peazip.app program launcher, I get the following error: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/thegooddale/Screen-shot-2010-05-22-at-71907-PM.png Here is the app launcher that the compile made: http://forboden.com/coding/peazip.app.zip - you can use an unzip program to look at the files inside (i.e. unzip it twice). Do I have to switch from Time.now to Time.zone.now, everywhere? Seems cumbersome. I truly don't care what the local time of the server is, it's giving me loads of trouble due to extensive use of Time.now. Am I misunderstanding anything fundamental here?

My silverlight application keeps telling me it cannot find a static resource. I wonder if I have a naming convention issue or somehting - was hoping iterating through the resources in memory would help diagnose any issue... I'd like to retrieve/store this data in a SQL Server database using SQL Alchemy, but am having some trouble loading the pyodbc module.   I am in the process of porting a script from UT3 to UDK. The script is for class ZOUIFrontEnd_MainMenu extends UTUIFrontEnd_MainMenu. I'm getting the following compiler error: C:\UDK\UDK-2010-03\Development\Src\FixIt\Classes\ZOUIFrontEnd_MainMenu.uc(18) : Error, Bad or missing expression in Call to 'OpenSceneByName', parameter 1 The referenced line is as follows: OpenSceneByName(SettingsScene); Okay, so I figured the OpenSceneByName function changed in UDK. Tracing the path of inheritance all the way up to UDKUIScene.uc, I found the definition: function UIScene OpenSceneByName(string SceneToOpen, bool bSkipAnimation=false, optional delegate<OnSceneActivated> SceneDelegate=None) Assuming SettingsScene is a string, everything looks fine, right? So I figured I would find SettingsScene to make sure it's a string. Well doing a search for "SettingsScene" in all files turned up only one other line; UTGameReplicationInfo.uc line 334: UTPC.OpenUIScene(class'UTUIFrontEnd_MainMenu'.default.SettingsScene); But UTUIFrontEnd_MainMenu doesn't have a SettingsScene variable in it! Just to check, I changed my line of code to match: OpenSceneByName(class'UTUIFrontEnd_MainMenu'.default.SettingsScene); And indeed, I get the following compile error now: C:\UDK\UDK-2010-03\Development\Src\FixIt\Classes\ZOUIFrontEnd_MainMenu.uc(18) : Error, Unknown Property 'SettingsScene' in 'Class UTGame.UTUIFrontEnd_MainMenu' How does UTGameReplicationInfo.uc successfully compile? Where is the SettingsScene variable?

• able to get the events in fullcalender, but not able to sync these events with time

  i just loved the fullcalendar and wanted to implement it in a small application, everythin worked OK. i am able to get the events from my database through json to the front end. but all events are being listed as "ALL-DAY" events itself. not able to figure out why.. here is the screenshot for the same. any ideas what is going wrong..? i am using asp.net and c#. i have already tried sending the start and end dates in the ToString(), ToShortDateString(), ToString("s"), ToLongDateString(), ToUniversalTime(). nothing seems to working for me at the moment. i tried hard coding and sendin the data too. sample json of my data [{ "id": "2", "title": "Event2", "start": "1274171700", "end": "1274175600" }, { "id": "1", "title": "Event1", "start": "5/18/2010 16:30:00", "end": "5/18/2010 19:30:00" }, { "id": "3", "title": "Event3", "start": "5/18/2010 2:05:00 PM", "end": "5/18/2010 3:10:00 PM" }, { "id": "4", "title": "Event4", "start": "5/18/2010", "end": "5/18/2010" }, { "id": "5", "title": "Event5", "start": "2010-05-18T14:05:00", "end": "2010-05-18T15:10:00" }] all data above has different formats of dates, and at the moment nothing seems to be working. fullcalender accepts the day part fine, but not the time part. not sure why. can anybody help?
