• Which databases support parallel processing across multiple servers?

  I need a database engine that can utilize multiple servers for processing a single SQL query in parallel. So far I know that this is possible with the some engines, though none of them are feasible for me either because of pricing or missing features. The engines currently known to me are: MS SQL (enterprise) DB2 (enterprise) Oracle (enterprise) GridSQL Greenplum Which other engines have this feature? Do you have any experience with using this feature? Edit: I have now proposed a method for creating one myself. Any input is welcome. • How can I mount .IMG floppy disk images which are not 1.44MB or any other floppy format?

  I have several .IMG files, but they are different sizes which do not comform to any floppy disk format, i.e. not 1.44MB, 720K, 2.88MB... these .IMG files are like 420K, 832K, etc. Additional info: Winimage, rar, Magic ISO... none of these worked. The files I want to download are located in www.vetusware.com under DBMSOracle6. They are 2 files in rar format, but when I extract the rar's, I get forty-two .IMG files with varied sizes, not 1.44MB, etc. If anyone could please give it a try and succeed in mounting or reading the extractd IMG files, I would appreciate you letting me know how you achieved it, I really need this legacy Oracle 6/DOS version!.. • Virtualizing OpenSolaris with physical disks

  I currently have a OpenSolaris installation with a ~1Tb RaidZ volume made up of 3 500Gb hard drives. This is on commodity hardware (ASUS NVIDIA based board on Intel Core 2). I'm wondering whether anyone knows if XenServer or Oracle VM can be used to install 2009.06 and get given physical access to the three SATA drives so that I can continue to use the zpool and be able to use the Xen bits for other areas. I'm thinking of installing the JeOS version of OpenSolaris, have it manage just my ZFS volume and some other stuff for work(4GB), then have a Windows(2GB) and Linux(1GB) VM (theres 8Gb RAM on that box) virtualised for testing things. Currently I am using VirtualBox installed on OpenSolaris for the Windows and Linux testing but wondered if the above was a better alternative. Essentially, 3 Disks - OpenSolaris Guest VM, it loads the zpool and offers it to the other VMs via CIFS.

• Monitor Processes' Memory Usage

  We have an IBM P series box running AIX 5.3. This is our application server, whereby our J2EE application is running in Oracle's Applications Server (version 10g r2). At around 11pm till the next day 7am, we have shell scripts running, which executes Java class programs. Recently, this server has been experiencing some high memory usage, which caused some of the Java class programs throwing "Out of memory" exception . We normally use NMON to monitor the server's resources, such as CPU, I/O, memory, etc. But because of this OOM issue, we would like to know throughout the day, what are the processes which are running and how much memory each process consumed. NMON is not able to show this. Even with the "-T" parameter, it only shows the top processes and not all. Is there any thing we can use to monitor all the processes' memory?

• Is there a difference between starting a WebLogic Admin Server through the command-line or through t

  I have WebLogic 11g installed on my machine under /srv/wls, and I start Node manager on it with /srv/wls/wlserver_10.3/server/bin/startNodeManager.sh. I create my domain with config.sh, and then I want to start the Admin Server of that domain with Node Manager. So I open a WLST session and do the following: > nmConnect(...) > nmStart('AdminServer') But when I then visit localhost:7001/console, and login, the screen on the browser remains blank and the server logs tell me the server has run out of PermGen space. I don't encounter this problem when starting the Admin Server through the shell script under $DOMAIN/startWebLogic.sh. Then it works fine. Any idea what I am doing wrong? I couldn't find anything in Google nor on the Oracle forums...

The following are the steps that I performed for installing: I installed the setup file from the link given below: wget http://download.oracle.com/otn-pub/java/jdk/7u1-b08/jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz I have a file: jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz I Untared it: tar -xvf jdk-7u1-linux-x64.tar.gz sudo mv ./jdk1.7.0_01 /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01 sudo update-alternatives –config java Here it gave me the following output: There is only one alternative in link group java: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java Nothing to configure. sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_01/jre/bin/java 1(I entered 1 here.) sudo update-alternatives --config java java -version. It showed the following output java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode) I am not sure if jdk1.7.0 is installed as its showing the version as 1.6.0_26.

But we have scripts that use mailx which cannot be re-written to use any extra flags, so I'd like to use internal variables instead, which I see on the linux.die.net manpage on mailx is an alternative to the -r flag: -r address Sets the From address. Overrides any from variable specified in environment or startup files. Tilde escapes are disabled. The -r address options are passed to the mail transfer agent unless SMTP is used.   I am fairly new to linux and am using fedora 14 (64 bit). I have to install the java media framework for one of my projects. In the installation instructions on their website (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/download-142937.html) they use the % symbol. I have done some research and googling and can't find what the significance of % is. Does anyone know? I have been able to find just about every other symbol meaning (., .., #, and more). • How can I prevent Ask.com Toolbar from being installed every time Java is updated?

  As many are painfully aware of, Oracle continues to not only bundle the Java installation with the useless Internet browser toolbar from Ask.com, but also enable its installation by default. In addition to the toolbar, Ask also replaces your favourite search engine in your browser with Ask. Furthermore, the Java installation goes as far as to actually recommend installing this useless junk, meaning that any non IT-savvy person is more than likely to leave it checked and install it (after all, it was enabled by default and the friendly Java installer did recommend it, right?). To add insult to injury, even if you remove the Ask Toolbar, you can be sure to see it again soon, when the next Java update hits you (which seem to happen quite often lately, due to loads of security fixes for Java, but that's another story). I'll duly remove the check-mark to install Ask Toolbar, whenever I update Java, but when supporting my family and friends, it's obvious they don't. How can I prevent the pesky Ask.com Toolbar from being installed in the first place?

• How come Win+R prompt can open Python when it's not in my path?

  When I use the run prompt in Windows XP Professional (Win+R), and type python.exe or python, it works and greets me with the python prompt. However, when I start a cmd window, and then type python.exe or python, it doesn't find it. This is what I expect, as the Python directory (for me, I:\Python31\) is not in my PATH. How come, then, that if I type python.exe in the Win+R prompt, it works? Edit: here is a partial output of SET, I removed most irrelevant entries, I'm not sure why is it useful, apart from the PATH variable which I already said doesn't include the Python directory. • Linux (non-transparent) per-process hugepage accounting

  I've recently converted some java apps to run with linux manually-configured hugepages. I've got about 10 tomcats running on a system and I am interested in knowing how much memory each one is using. I can get summary information out of /proc/meminfo as described in Linux Huge Pages Usage Accounting. But I can't find any tools that tell me about the actual per-process hugepage usage.   We are planning to implement a VDI Solution. We had some discussions about Blade vs Rack. As we are only planning to implement 75-100 Clients, we calculated, that we would need 2 Servers with Dual 8C Processors - and a shared storage server. This calculation is based on a paper by ORACLE, that says, 12 active virtual machines per core. Now, for buying to servers, a blade does not scale financially. But the Blade has some other advantages: a) The interconnectivity between the blades is super-fast. b) IO Virtualisation Are there other advantages, that we should consider, that would make up for price - and are this advantages so important, that we should think about investing in the blade?

• Hyper-v vs Virtualbox

  I am using Oracle VirtualBox for ubuntu guest virtual servers on windows server 2008 R2. I'm in a plan to migrate(stop using virtualbox) from VirtualBox to Hyper-V. I guess many are using hyper-v virtualization and have good control over it and could help me here in clarifying few things. The reason I use Virtualbox is it's open source and the reason for migrating is that if hyper-v support any additional feature which virtualbox doesn't(and I couldn't migrate VBox vms along with all the snapshots). I have following questions to get it clarified. Does hyper-v require any licence or is limited to running particular number of virtual machines?. Is hyper-v capable to export/import VMs along with all the snapshots? Is it possible to run HeadLess VMs like it's done with VirtualBox? Does hyper-v recognize VDI/VMDK? Anybody can suggest me anything?. Thanks!

• Red Hat 5.4 slow processing

  I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.4 on HP DL580 server with 16 processors and 64 GB of RAM. I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt). I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller. any idea what could be the reason of this slowness?

  I want to set up an Oracle Linux 6 server that gives users secure IMAP email (with dovecot), Jabber IM, FTP (with vsftpd), and calDav. However, I want each user logon to be able to authenticate all services (e.g. Joe Smith signs up once for a username and password that he can use for email, ftp, and his calendar). My question is, which database service will be best suited for that application? Also, is there a way to link the database with the preexisting server shell logins (e.g. so I can read the root account's LogCheck emails on a different device)?

• 504 Gateway Timeout on server clusters

  Hi All, Here's our scenario: We're running three websites on three web servers hosted on virtual machines running the following: IIS6 Win 2003 Standard Edition Oracle 10g Sitefinity 3.7 We do not have constant control over these servers and something's gone wrong in the interim in that we're getting constant 504 Gateway Timeouts. The other thing that's happening is that if you hit one of the sites, that site is trying to pull themes from one of the sites App_Themes folder in Sitefinity, which of course should not be happening at all. If someone has any ideas on why this should suddenly have started happening I would appreciate it. Many thanks

  I have a server in which SCO 5.x is installed. I have several thin clients which were supplied from our head office. Those thin clients have linux pre-installed in them. When we tried to connect to our SCO server, we have found out that the thin client does not support SCO terminal type. So the program (Which is written in Oracle forms) is not working correctly. Lots of function keys stopped working and screen also not getting refreshed correctly. Hence we decided to use Ubuntu Live USB keys in thin clients. Now the problem is how can we change the terminal type to SCO in ubuntu ? Means I want it in the text terminal (Alt+Ctrl+F1,F2...) (Not in xterm...graphical terminal emulators). Does ubuntu support SCO terminal type ?

• Is it possible to detect that a database connection is to a copy rather than to the original database?

  I have an application that needs to know if it is connected to the original database that it was installed with or if the connection is to a copy of that database. Is there any known method to know if the database has been cloned and the application is no longer connected to the original? I am specifically interested in MS SQL Server and Oracle. I was kicking ideas around for a stored procedure but that most likely doesn't have access to the hardware to confirm unique hardware information that would somewhat guarantee that the database is the one that it was originally connected to during installation. I'm trying to prevent/detect cloning of a database so that there is only 1 "true location of truth". Thanks!

  there are obviously various 'canned' configuration options in oracle's weblogic server console for setting up data sources, jms queues, ldap servers etc, etc. What i want however is a way to configure other servers, mostly server urls, etc, in the console as well, and allow web applications running on the web server to access those configuration settings at runtime, probably through jndi names. Things like a document management server, a workflow server, etc. However I'm at a loss for how to configure custom jndi 'data sources' within wls' console. Is this possible?

• Need old version Firefox Java plugin

  I need to use Java 1.6.0_20 for the software I'm running. I went to the Oracle website and downloaded jre1.6.0_20 and installed it on my computer, but can't seem to get Firefox to load Java. If I download directly from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp, the plugin works fine but is the wrong version, and I can't find on www.java.com anywhere to download any of the previous versions. According to the help (can't post link because of spam prevention), I need to go into the Java Control Panel and enable it for Mozilla. I've done this multiple times, but every time I go in to the control panel and check the box, click Apply and Save, as soon as I go back in the box is unchecked. Does anyone know either why the box is unchecked, or where I can download the old JRE that also is configured for Firefox?

• Virtualbox VM (spawned by Vagrant) running but inaccessible. What now?

  I have a Virtualbox VM running Ubuntu that was started by Vagrant. At some point my ssh session connected to the guest stopped responding. I tried "vagrant halt" from a terminal window on the host (OS X). The shutdown process seemed to also hang. Shutting down the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager doesn't shut down the VMs themselves. Is there a way in either Vagrant or VirtualBox to force the running VM to shutdown? When running desktop guest OSes, closing the GUI window presents several options for shutting down the guest, but I don't know how to do the equivalent when the guest is running headless.

• Is there a direct URL to download Java JDK updates?

  I have a whole set of machines that are on the other side of a firewall configured to prevent all Javascript from functioning. All of them (Linux 32 and 64 bit configurations) must be updated to Java 6 update 20. This is a problem given Sun/Oracle's URL redirector and download manager: they simply don't appear or don't work. Is there a URL to download the JDK updates and bypass the redirect? Obviously, a yum configuration that would allow for automatic updates would be optimal but I'd be happy to just have the rpm file.

I am thinking of following setup if thats [possible because i have not worked with biger companies , so i want to know how can i do that I am thinking of creating 5 virtual machines VM1 will be database server and will have all databases like MySQL , postgreSQL , sqlite , mongodb and Oracle VM2 will be the web server and will have Apache and Tomcat installed VM3 will be the Filse server where i will have all the web sites file VM4 , i am thinking of as main box where i can install ptyon php java j2ee sites but not sure VM5 will have the server 22008 for c# .net applications my main idea is to be able to host the sites in php, python , java j2ee with spring Is my setup ok or i am missing few things.
