• Ways to prevent multiple email notification with php&mysql

  My 1st post, but i got many great answers and tips from stackoverflow so far. This one was a close call- How does facebook, gmail send the real time notification? but not exactly, so let brainstorm this together. I have CMS system with mail notification when a change is made on the site. Everything wotk very well but i want to prevent multiple notification if somene make another quick change to, let say, fix a typo. Using php mail(), obviously. I've tough of 2 ways, one simple, and one.... let just say, pretty heavy... cough. the 3rd one was inspired by Implementing Email Notification but really doesn't look appealing to me to send bunch of email at once. Use a timestamp to check if another change was made in the 'let say' last 5 minutes. Record the last change, and compare it to the new one. Could be usefull for backup at the same time since i'll have to save the change somewhere, but text can be long and making an sql search would be painfull. Wouldn't it? Use cron to send changes every x minutes... convince me if you ythink it is a suitable solution. Any ideas, comment or suggestion of your own? • Value types of variable size

  I'm trying to code a small math library in C#. I wanted to create a generic vector structure where the user could define the element type (int, long, float, double, etc.) and dimensions. My first attempt was something like this... public struct Vector<T> { public readonly int Dimensions; public readonly T[] Elements; // etc... } Unfortunately, Elements, being an array, is also a reference type. Thus, doing this, Vector<int> a = ...; Vector<int> b = a; a[0] = 1; b[0] = 2; would result in both a[0] and b[0] equaling 2. My second attempt was to define an interface IVector<T>, and then use Reflection.Emit to automatically generate the appropriate type at runtime. The resulting classes would look roughly like this: public struct Int32Vector3 : IVector<T> { public int Element0; public int Element1; public int Element2; public int Dimensions { get { return 3; } } // etc... } This seemed fine until I found out that interfaces seem to act like references to the underlying object. If I passed an IVector to a function, and changes to the elements in the function would be reflected in the original vector. What I think is my problem here is that I need to be able to create classes that have a user specified number of fields. I can't use arrays, and I can't use inheritance. Does anyone have a solution? EDIT: This library is going to be used in performance critical situations, so reference types are not an option.

  First question here in stackoverflow :) I'm running a little android 2.2 app to log cpu frequency usage. It is set up as a service that will write the data every 10 seconds using a new thread. The code for that part is very basic (see below). It works fine, except that it would not keep track of time while the phone is asleep (which, I know, is the expected behavior). Thus, I changed the code to use SystemClock.elapsedRealTime() instead. Problem is, in emulator both commands are equivalent, but in the phone the app will start the thread but it will never execute the mHandler.postAtTime command. Any advice regarding why this is happening or how to overcome the issue is greatly appreciated. PS: stopLog() is not being called.   Hi all, My situation is next: there are to entities with many-to-many relation, f.e. Products and Categories. Also, categories has hierachial structure, like a tree. There is need to select all products that depends to some concrete category with all its childs (branch). (Use a string to do this) Counts three things: how many single-character words are in the file, how many short (2 to 5 characters) words are in the file, and how many long (6 or more characters) words are in the file. • Need help INSERT record(s) MySQL DB

  I have an online form which collects member(s) information and stores it into a very long MySQL database. We allow up to 16 members to enroll at a single time and originally structured the DB to allow such. For example: If 1 Member enrolls, his personal information (first name, last name, address, phone, email) are stored on a single row. If 15 Members enroll (all at once), their personal information are stored in the same single row. The row has information housing columns for all 'possible' inputs. I am trying to consolidate this code and having every nth member that enrolls put onto a new record within the database. I have seen sugestions before for inserting multiple records as such: INSERT INTO tablename VALUES (('$f1name', '$f1address', '$f1phone'), ('$f2name', '$f2address', '$f2phone')... The issue with this is two fold: I do not know how many records are being enrolled from person to person so the only way to make the statement above is to use a loop The information collected from the forms is NOT a single array so I can't loop through one array and have it parse out. My information is collected as individual input fields like such: Member1FirstName, Member1LastName, Member1Phone, Member2Firstname, Member2LastName, Member2Phone... and so on Is it possible to store information in separate rows WITHOUT using a loop (and therefore having to go back and completely restructure my form field names and such (which can't happen due to the way the validation rules are built.)

• Is it possible to get a truly unique id for a particular JVM instance?

  I need a way to uniquely and permanently identify an instance of the JVM from within Java code running in that JVM. That is, if I have two JVMs running at the same time on the same machine, each is distinguishable. It is also distinguishable from running JVMs on other machines and from future executions on the same machine even if the process id is reused. I figure I could implement something like this by identifying the start time, the machine MAC, and the process id, and combining them in some way. I'm wondering if there is some standard way to achieve this. Update: I see that everyone recommended a UUID for the entire session. That seems like a good idea though possibly a little too heavyweight. Here is my problem though: I want to use the JVM id to create multiple unique identifiers in each JVM execution that somehow incorporate the JVM instance. My understanding is that you shouldn't really mix other numbers into a UUID because uniqueness is no longer guaranteed. An alternative is to make the UUID into a string and chain it, but then it becomes too long. Any ideas on overcoming this?

I'm trying to understand if it is possible to pass as a parameter of a CLR stored procedure a large amount of data as "0x5352532F...". This is to avoid to send the data directly to the CLR stored procedure, instead of sending ti to a temporary DB field and from there passing it as varbinary(max) parmeter to the CLR stored procedure. I have a triple question: 1) is it possible, if yes how? Let's say i want to pass a pdf file to the CLR stored procedure (not the path, the full bits that make up the file). Something like: exec MyCLRStoredProcs.dbo.insertfile @file_remote_path ='c:\temp\test_file.txt' , @file_contents=0x4D5A90000300000004000.... --(this long list is the file content) where insertfile is a stored proc that writes to the server path (at file_remote_path) the binary data I pass as (file_contents). 2) is it there corruption risk of adopting this approach (or it is the same approach that sql server uses behind the scenes)? 3) how to convert the content of a file into the "0x23423..." hexadecimal representation

• multiple mysql_real_query() in while loop

  It seems that when I have one mysql_real_query() function in a continuous while loop, the query will get executed OK. However, if multiple mysql_real_query() are inside the while loop, one right after the other. Depending on the query, sometimes neither the first query nor second query will execute properly. This seems like a threading issue to me. I'm wondering if the mysql c api has a way of dealing with this?   For a project I am working on, I need to persist a number of POJOs to a database. The POJOs class definitions are sometimes highly nested, but they should flatten okay, as the nesting is tree-like and contains no cycles (and the base elements are eventually primitives/Strings). It is preferred that the solution used create one table per data type and that the tables will have one field per primitive member in the POJO. Subclassing and similar problems are not issues for this particular project. Does anybody know of any existing solutions that can: Automatically generate a CREATE TABLE definition from the class definition Automatically generate a query to persist an object to the database, given an instance of the object Automatically generate a query to retrieve an object from the database and return it as a POJO, given a key. Solutions that can do this with minimum modifications/annotions to the class files and minimum external configuration are preferred.   Hi, I've got a list of 'double' values. I need to select every 6th record. It's a list of coordinates, where I need to get the minimum and maximum value of every 6th value. List of coordinates (sample): [2.1, 4.3, 1.0, 7.1, 10.6, 39.23, 0.5, ... ] with hundrets of coordinates. Result should look like: [x_min, y_min, z_min, x_max, y_max, z_max] with exactly 6 coordinates. Following code works, but it takes to long to iterate over all coordinates.   I recently made a Chat application in Visual Basic using PHP. What i want to do is in Visual Basic create a unique ID. That unique ID, has to be his filename. I'm not very good with PHP so what i want to know is: I want the unique ID to be the filename of the "Note". Like: $logfile= '{uniqueID.php}'; Whenever the user opens the program, it'll open his uniqueID.php file and he can edit that in my program. Long Story Short (TL;DR) Program generates uniqueID uniqueID is going to be a new file; {uniqueID}.php On next open it will check if {uniqueID}.php of him/her exists else it will make a new one. I know this isn't really secure but it's to learn something for myself.

• how can I cache a partial retrieved through link_to_remote in rails?

  I use link_to_remote to pull the dynamic contents of a partial onto the page. It's basically a long row from a database of "todo's" for the day. So as the person goes through and checks them off, I want to show the updated list with a line through those that are finished. Currently, I end up needing to click on the link_to_remote again after an item is ticked off, but would like it to redirect back to the "cached" page of to-do's but with the one item lined through. How do I do that?   Possible Duplicate: How much do you [really] work a day When I started working (not so long ago), I was very conscientious about really working. If I didn't work for 10 minutes at a time, I felt like I was cheating. But as I started to look around me, I realized that I was the only one... and most of my coworkers were spending a big percentage of their time browsing the internet or playing solitaire. I started to slack off a little more than usual... while still basically getting all my work done. But while I do all that's required of me, and usually quickly, I no longer beg for work to fill up my spare time; I'm content to do what I'm told and play around when no one makes sure I'm busy enough. Which means that I'm often bored and underutilized. (Which I was even when I begged for work - people are pretty laid back about the workload and don't seem to realize how much I can get done if pushed to the fullest.) But I was just talking to a friend who graduated with me and also recently started working... and she came to me with the same concerns about slacking. She's working remotely, which means there are often gaps in communication when she can't really get anything done... And she's feeling guilty about it. Which made me rethink the whole thing... So, as workers, how many hours, out of the 8 standard average, are you actually working (honestly)? And, as bosses, how many hours do you expect your workers to work? And from an ethical standpoint, how much free time, or space out time, can workers have during the day without being considered to be "cheating" their office of labor and money?

  Context: ASP.NET MVC 2.0, C#, SQL Server 2007, IIS7 I have 'scheduledMeetings' table in the database. There is a one-to-many relationship: scheduledMeeting - meetingRegistration So that you could have 10 people registered for a meeting. meetingRegistration has fields Name, and Gender (for example). I have a "calendar view" on my site that shows all coming events, as well as gender count for each event. At the moment I use Linq to Sql to pull the data: var meetings = db.Meetings.Select( m => new { MeetingId = m.Id, Girls = m.Registrations.Count(r => r.Gender == 0), Boys = m.Registrations.Count(r=>r.Gender == 1) }); (actual query is half-a-page long) Because there is anonymous type use going on I cant extract it into a method (since I have several different flavors of calendar view, with different information on each, and I dont want to create new class for each). Any suggestions on how to improve this? Is database view is the answer? Or should I go ahead and create named-type? Any feedback/suggestions are welcome. My DataLayer is huge, I want to trim it, just dont know how. Pointers to a good reading would be good too.

• What goes into the "Controller" in "MVC"?

  I think I understand the basic concepts of MVC - the Model contains the data and behaviour of the application, the View is responsible for displaying it to the user and the Controller deals with user input. What I'm uncertain about is exactly what goes in the Controller. Lets say for example I have a fairly simple application (I'm specifically thinking Java, but I suppose the same principles apply elsewhere). I organise my code into 3 packages called app.model, app.view and app.controller. Within the app.model package, I have a few classes that reflect the actual behaviour of the application. These extends Observable and use setChanged() and notifyObservers() to trigger the views to update when appropriate. The app.view package has a class (or several classes for different types of display) that uses javax.swing components to handle the display. Some of these components need to feed back into the Model. If I understand correctly, the View shouldn't have anything to do with the feedback - that should be dealt with by the Controller. So what do I actually put in the Controller? Do I put the public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) in the View with just a call to a method in the Controller? If so, should any validation etc be done in the Controller? If so, how do I feedback error messages back to the View - should that go through the Model again, or should the Controller just send it straight back to View? If the validation is done in the View, what do I put in the Controller? Sorry for the long question, I just wanted to document my understanding of the process and hopefully someone can clarify this issue for me!

• where is c function attribute set (how to unset) with gcc

  I am working with code from the GNU core utils, and find that the void usage() function is apparently set with the attribute "noreturn". Well, I am modifying the function, and I wish it to return (I removed the call to exit()). The compiler still complains that a "noreturn" function returns, and when using the Eclipse CDT debugger, stepping thorugh the code is anomolous - I skip over lines of code. I do not see the function be set in the .c file, and there is no .h file for this .c file. The file is df.c. I have renamed the file df_call.c. How can the compiler be finding this attribute? How can I unset it? Thanks. ======= Thanks to all contributors for their help! The short answer is "the usage() function found in GNUutils 7.4 is prototyped in system.h as 'void usage (int status) ATTRIBUTE_NORETURN'. Changing to 'void usage (int status); /*ATTRIBUTE_NORETURN;*/' resolved the issue for me, but leaves the problem of a modified system.h. The long answer is: The GNU c compiler supports assigning attributes to functions (see http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Function-Attributes.html) one of which is "noreturn". The syntax is "attribute ((noreturn))" (see http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Attribute-Syntax.html#Attribute-Syntax) but is often macro'd to ATTRIBUTE_NORETURN. If the attribute is set, and in this case one tries to return from the function, the executable compiles with a complaint, but compiles and runs. It will, however, behave unexpectedly (skipping over src lines in my case, maybe due to the optimization). The debugger in Eclipse CDT actually jumps past lines of code, leading the developer to doubt his senses.

• Zoom in Java Swing application

  Hi there, I am looking for ways to zoom in a Java Swing application. That means that I would like to resize all components in a given JPanel by a given factor as if I would take an screenshot of the UI and just applied an "Image scale" operation. The font size as well as the size of checkboxes, textboxes, cursors etc. has to be adjusted. It is possible to scale a component by applying transforms to a graphics object: protected Graphics getComponentGraphics(Graphics g) { Graphics2D g2d=(Graphics2D)g; g2d.scale(2, 2); return super.getComponentGraphics(g2d); } That works as long as you don't care about self-updating components. If you have a textbox in your application this approach ceases to work since the textbox updates itself every second to show the (blinking) cursor. And since it doesn't use the modified graphics object this time the component appears at the old location. Is there a possibility to change a components graphics object permanently? There is also a problem with the mouse click event handlers. The other possibility would be to resize all child components of the JPanel (setPreferredSize) to a new size. That doesn't work for checkboxes since the displayed picture of the checkbox doesn't change its size. I also thought of programming my own layout manager but I don't think that this will work since layout managers only change the position (and size) of objects but are not able to zoom into checkboxes (see previous paragraph). Or am I wrong with this hypothesis? Do you have any ideas how one could achieve a zoomable Swing GUI without programming custom components? I looked for rotatable user interfaces because the problem seems familiar but I also didn't find any satisfying solution to this problem. Thanks for your help, Chris

  We're looking for a standalone (non-cms) calendaring solution to display on the web. It could be open source or a paid service. We're primarily looking for a way to display a calendar on the web complete with when the events are and what the names of the events are. It would be great if it can display in different views like by week, month, year. Month view would be the most important one. We want to keep it as simple as possible. We mainly just want users to view the calendar. The events do not even have to be editable on the end user's side just as long as there is some way for us on the backend to add/delete/import events into the calendar whether it be through .ics (iCal files)/desktop software/via some web interface. We know Google Calendar is around and there is also PHPiCalendar. Are there any other alternatives around? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

  I am converting a application from c++ to C# and have a question about the proper way to handle importing structs. I am attempting to convert a struct from a c dll into c# The struct in c looks like this typedef struct card_info { ushort r; ushort s; enum_a a; usinged long ul; ushort n; ushort* b; ushort id; } CARD_INFO; when i use [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequentaial)] the size of the array is 20 bytes in c#. However, if take a look at my working c++ code it is 24 bytes. I changed my c# to look like this: [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Explicit)] public struct CardInfo { [FieldOffset(0) public ushort r; [FieldOffset(2) public ushort s; [FieldOffset(4) public EnumA a; [FieldOffset(8) public ushort ul; [FieldOffset(12) public ushort n; [FieldOffset(16) public UInt32 b; [FieldOffset(20) public ushort id; } This seems to compile but I'm not convinced this is the correct way to go about doing this. Please let me know if this is correct or if there is a better way. Thanks

• regex numeric data processing: match a series of numbers greater than X

  Say I have some data like this: number_stream = [0,0,0,7,8,0,0,2,5,6,10,11,10,13,5,0,1,0,...] I want to process it looking for "bumps" that meet a certain pattern. Imagine I have my own customized regex language for working on numbers, where [[ =5 ]] represents any number = 5. I want to capture this case: ([[ >=5 ]]{3,})[[ <3 ]]{2,} In other words, I want to begin capturing any time I look ahead and see 3 or more values = 5 in a row, and stop capturing any time I look ahead and see 2+ values < 3. So my output should be: >>> stream_processor.process(number_stream) [[5,6,10,11,10,13,5],...] Note that the first 7,8,... is ignored because it's not long enough, and that the capture ends before the 0,1,0.... I'd also like a stream_processor object I can incrementally pass more data into in subsequent process calls, and return captured chunks as they're completed. I've written some code to do it, but it was hideous and state-machiney, and I can't help feeling like I'm missing something obvious. Any ideas to do this cleanly?

• IE showing hidden div under certain circumstances

  After googling around and finding a lot of ie bugs I still did not find a description of the problem I have. The initial situation is a standard one. We have a tooltip which is actually a hidden div that will be displayed on mouseover at a given location. The div is hidden with display:none and contains a table with the content. We tried different libraries for showing the div (scriptaculous and jQuery Cluetip) but the effect is the same. The problem: Everything is fine as long as the contents fits the width of my window. But when I resize it until the horizontal scrollbar is activated the content of the hidden div will be shown at the end of the page when the tooltip is activated. This is really strange as it happens only under these premises. When more than one tooltip is involved the browser might even crash (and under Vista takes the whole system with him duh). I know it's a bit complicated to explain but I hope that someone at least had heard of that bug and can point me into the right direction.

• explain notifier.c from the Linux kernel

  I'm seeking to fully understand the following code snippet from kernel/notifier.c. I have read and built simple link lists and think I get the construct from K&R's C programming. The second line below which begins with the 'int' appears to be two items together which is unclear. The first is the (*notifier_call) which I believe has independent but related significance with the second containing a 'notifier block' term. Can you explain how it works in detail? I understand that there is a function pointer and multiple subscribers possible. But I lack the way to tie these facts together, and could use a primer or key so I exactly understand how the code works. The third line looks to contain the linking structure, or recursive nature.
