  I've bought many iPhone apps by now, some free and some paid. I've reinstalled my computer, and in the new installation, iTunes is completely blank. On first sync, iTunes downloads the apps that are currently installed on my iPhone. But what about all those apps that I have bought and aren't currently installed? Is there a way to re-download all my apps into iTunes? Where can I see a listing of all the apps I've ever downloaded? (Update: Apparently not all purchased content is restored - some things are inexplicably missing. You won't be charged anew for downloading them again, but you also won't be told what it is that you're missing. See here for details...)

• Can't use HTTPS with ServerXMLHTTP object

  I am supporting a Classic ASP application that connects to a payment gateway via HTTPS. Up until recently there have been no issues. A few days ago this broke without the code, IIS config or anything local changing. Its broken on at least 3 separate servers. The last run of Windows Updates was in late November, but bringing the servers' updates up date has not resolved the problem. A code snippet is below. • OpenXML error “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.”

  From time to time I ear some people saying their new web application supports data export to Excel format. So far so good … but they don’t tell the all story … in fact almost all the times what is happening is they are exporting data to a Comma-Separated file or simply exporting GridView rendered HTML to an xls file. Ok … it works but it’s not something I would be proud of. So … yesterday I decided to take a look at the Office Open XML File Formats Specification (Microsoft Office 2007+ format) based on well-known technologies: ZIP and XML. I start by installing Open XML SDK 2.0 for Microsoft Office and playing with some samples. Then I decided to try it on a more complex web application and the “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.” message start happening. Google show us that many people suffer from the same and it seems there are many reasons that can trigger this message. Some are related to the process itself, others with encodings or even styling. Well, none solved my problem and I had to dig … well not that much, I simply change the output file extension to zip and extract the zip content. Then I did the same to the output file from my first sample, compare both zip contents with SourceGear DiffMerge and found that my problem was Culture related. Yes, my complex application sets the Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture  to a non-English culture. For sample purposes I was simply using the ToString method to convert numbers and dates to a string representation but forgot that XML is culture invariant and thus using a decimal separator other than “.” will result in a deserialization problem. I solve the “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.” by using Convert.ToString(object, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture) method instead of the ToString method. Hope this can help someone.

• Shader compile log depending on hardware

  I'm done with the core of my graphics engine and I'm testing it on every platform I can get my hands on. Now, what I noticed is that different drivers return different shader and program compile log content. For example, on my friend's laptop if you successfuly compile a shader then the log is simply empty. However on my PC I get some useful information along with it. So if I compile a vertex shader, I'll get: Vertex shader was successfully compiled to run on hardware. Which isn't that impressive, but is what happens when I compile a program. On my friend's computer the log is empty, since the program compiles. However on my own computer I get: Vertex shader(s) linked, fragment shader(s) linked. Which is awesome, because I'm attaching a geometry shader with 0 (I have a geometry shader file with trash, so it doesn't compile and the pointer is set to 0), and the compiler just tells me which shaders linked. Now it got me thinking, if I was going to buy a graphics card, is there a way for me to get the information about whether or not I'll get this "extended" compile information? Maybe it's vendor specific? Now I don't expect an answer TBH, this seems a bit obscure, but maybe somebody has any experience with this and could post it.

• How to force ADF to speak your language (or any common language)

  When I started working for Oracle, one of the first tasks I was given was to contribute some content to a great ADF course Frank and Chris are building. Among other things, they asked me to work on a module about Internationalization. While doing research work, I unearthed a little gem I had overlooked all those years. JDeveloper, as you may know, speaks your language - as long as your language is English, that is. Oracle ADF, on the other hand, is a citizen of the world. It is available in more than 25 different languages. But while this is a wonderful feature for end users, it is rather cumbersome for developers. Why is that? Have you ever tried to search the OTN forums for a solution with a non-English error message as your query? I have, once. But how can you force ADF to use English for its logging operations? Playing with your system settings will not help, unfortunately. By default, ADF will output its error messages in the selected locale for the operating system account the application server runs on. The only way to change this behavior is to pass initialization parameters to the JVM used by the application server. It is even possible to specify the language and country/region separately. In the example below, we choose English and the United States respectively. -Duser.language=en -Duser.country=US In the case of WebLogic Server, it is possible to add such parameters in setDomainEnv.sh (or .cmd) to apply the settings to all the managed servers present on a node. • svn project with linked common files

  The src directory of my project is composed by three folders: two sub-projects and some common files. I linked the files of the common directory to the two sub-projects. I've just imported my project to svn but end up with three duplications of the content of the common directory. I'm wondering if svn can deal with this and how. Like an option which specify to not consider links. I thought about deleting in svn linked files from the sub-projects. Thank you, Éric.

  I am trying to write a VB Script to read a XML file (downloaded daily) and insert the information into a MSSQL DB. The content of the XML is a list if CDRs (Call Data Records). I need to parse the file and insert the cdr's into a table. I'm a Ruby,Perl,PHP,Javascript,SQL,... programer. But I've really never written any VB Script. I've done some googling and find a number of examples on how to generate XML from a SQL Query, but not the reverse. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

• Documents stored on separate internal drive, Ubuntu doesn't notice on startup

  My machine has Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS running side-by-side on a single hard drive with GRUB bootloader, each with 500 GB storage. I keep my personal documents on a separate 1TB hard drive so they remain isolated from any changes I make to the OS drive, but when Ubuntu starts it does not seem to notice my documents drive. While I've installed and worked with Ubuntu 12.04 Server x32 before, using it as a desktop OS is new to me. I use my documents drive for all of my personal data, including wallpapers and music, so it is imperative that Ubuntu recognize it on startup. Concerning the two specific examples: Ubuntu loads with the default blue-colored desktop instead of my desired picture of the spectacular Carina galaxy. When I right-click the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background", it wakes up from its amnesia and loads the proper background. As for my music, Rhythmbox defaults to an empty library upon reboot, forcing me to reload the settings manually each time. This gets quite tedious because I certainly can't work to my full potential without my music. The second thing I would like to address is making Ubuntu point the documents directories in ~ to their appropriate counterparts on the 1TB documents drive. I realize that this question is not new, but when I create the symbolical links, they established themselves inside the directories and did not convert the directories themselves into symbolical links. I also prefer not to move the files themselves from their current location on the 1TB drive. I believe this would also help the Rhythmbox library problem as well considering it's a default directory for the music player. • Game Asset Management

  I am making my first small mobile game in C# XNA. Lets say I have 3 screens, the main menu, options and game screen. A single game session usually lasts for 1 min, so the user will alternate frequently between the main menu and game screen. Therefore, once I load the textures for either screen, I want to keep them in memory to avoid frequent reloading. Both screens share some assets like their background textures, but differ in others. The first solution I came up with is making 2 texture factory classes, MainScreenAssetFactory and GameScreenAssetFactory, each with their own content manager, and ill store them in a globally accessible point so that they persist after either screen is destroyed. There is also a OptionsScreenAssetFactory, but that I dont want to cache it since the options screen is rarely visited. A typical Factory would look something like this public class MainScreenAssetFactory { private readonly ContentManager contentManager; public MainScreenAssetFactory(IServiceProvider serviceProvider, string rootDirectory) { contentManager = new ContentManager(serviceProvider) { RootDirectory = rootDirectory }; } public Texture2D ListElementBackground { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("UserTab"); } } public Texture2D ListElementBulletPoint { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("TabIcon"); } } public Texture2D LoggedOutUser { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("LoggedOutUser"); } } } Since both Main, Options and Game Screen share some common resources, instead of loading them more than once, I created another class CommonAssetTexFactory which holds the common stuff and stays in-memory during the app lifetime. For example, this class gets passed to the options screen when it is created. However, given my small game with its few assets, I am already finding this solution cumbersome and inflexible. Changing anything would require looking to see if its already in the common factory, and if not, modifying existing factories and so on. And this is just considering textures currently, i didnt add sound files yet. I cant imagine bigger games with thousands of resources using this approach. A better idea must exist. Would someone please enlighten me?

• In Windows 8.1, how can I configure File History to backup *some* of my SkyDrive folders?

  I want File History to back up all of the folders in my SkyDrive except for the media folders (Music, Pictures, Videos, Podcasts). My media folders are "available online only", the rest of "available offline". Right now File History does not back up any of the content in my SkyDrive, and I can't seem to find a way to configure which folders it backs up. I found some sources that say if my SkyDrive is available offline, it will be added to File History. But I don't want to make my entire SkyDrive available offline, just the non-media folders.

• What kind of permission is this? (Groups+Roles)

  I'm starting to need an access control for roles in my app. I don't know much of this, but I understand how vBulletin works: I create groups, then give permissions to groups. I think that what I need is the Role Bases Access Control (RBAC) , but i'm not sure, because I need groups to give permissions instead of single users (Maybe it's not that complicated to achieve). Example of what I'm thinking: Given a post: Editor's Group has permission to view it before it's published. Editor's Group has permission to edit its content. Public Group (Default) has not permission to view it before it's published. Admin Group has permission to delete the post. So basically I wan't orientation about if RBAC is what I need. And also, how would it be good to store group membership in a user, for example, would be good to have: ID NAME PASSWORD GROUPS (1, MyName, MyPassword, 1/2/3/4/5) and explode it via PHP or one registry for every Group membership in a table named permissions, example: USERID, USERGROUP values (1, 1), (1, 2) Maybe should be the second way because of the formal norms but I didn't study yet Databases 1 at college.

That directory is currently empty. With the vhosts file the way it is, does the Directory directive have any effect at all? I want to add some content which is separate from the Drupal site. How do I add sub-directories within /var/www/bananas.net/ which can be accessed alongside the Drupal site running at the root? As they have nothing to do with the Drupal site, I want to keep the files separate, but still using the same domain.

• AB failed requests - What can I do about them?

  So, in the past I've never had any problems with this app. All benchmarks had 100% success rate. Yesterday I set up nginx to server static content and pass on other requests to apache. Now, if I have 1 concurrent user (-c 1) then everything is fine. But it seems the more concurrent users I have, the more failed requests I get. Not a lot, but maybe about 10 or 15 out of 350. They're "length", whatever that means. Visiting the website with a browser, I don't have any problems at all. How can I find out the cause of these failed requests?

• URGENT: help recovering lost data

  I have made a directory: sudo mkdir /ssd, the directory was supposed to be mounted to a raid array called md3. This was done by adding /dev/md3 /ssd auto defaults 0 0 to fstab. Then after a while where I had used the directory, I realized that I had forgotten to run sudo mount -a - and then I did, and now the data is gone. I tried to uncomment the line in fstab and run sudo mount -a but that didn't get back my data. What can I do!? • How to Redirect from One URL to Another Showing the New URL

  I have an old domain www.olddomain.com, and now I have shifted my content to www.newdomain.com. Both of the domains are residing in the same root folder on a sharehost. I use CPanel to manage them. Now, when the user types in www.olddomain.com, I want it to be redirected to www.newdomain.com, with the address bar showing www.olddomain.com. How to do this in cpanel? I tried to use "redirects" feature in Domains list, and although I could get the redirection, but the address bar showed www.newdomain.com, not www.olddomain.com. Any idea?

• Clean out a large MediaWiki text table

  I just discovered that an old MediaWiki of mine was infested with spam, and the database table named "text" (which contains the page content) is 3GB large. I've deleted all the spam pages manually, but: The table is still the same size. I wonder how it got to 3GB anyway. • Dark NetBeans

  Let's make NetBeans IDE look like this. Not saying it's a nice color or anything, just that it's possible to do so: I changed the coloring in the Java editor by going to Tools | Options, then chose "Fonts & Colors", then selected the "Norway Today" profile and changed the background setting to Dark Gray. Next, I put this themes.xml file into the "config" folder of the NetBeans IDE user directory, which you can identify as such by going to Help | About in the IDE. Go to the exact location defined by "User directory" in Help | About, and then go to the "config" folder within that folder: The "config" folder of the user directory is the readable/writable root of the NetBeans IDE virtual filesystem. If a themes.xml file is found there, it is used, as described here. Then, in netbeans.conf file, which is not in the NetBeans user directory but in the NetBeans installation directory, within its "etc" folder, I added the following to "netbeans_default_options": -J-Dnetbeans.useTheme=true --laf Metal The first of these enables usage of the themes.xml file, i.e., it notifies NetBeans IDE at startup to load the themes.xml file and to apply the content to the relevant UI components, while the second is needed because most/all of the themes only work if you're using the Metal Look and Feel. Note: I must add that in most cases, whatever it is you're trying to achieve via a themes.xml file can probably be achieved in a different, and better, way. The themes.xml mechanism has been there forever, but is not actively supported or tested, though it may work for the specific thing you're trying to do anyway. For example, if you're trying to change the background color of a TopComponent, use the paintComponent method of the TopComponent instead of using a themes.xml file.

  I have two data disks that were, heretofore, in a mobo RAID configuration in Windows 7. They are now separate AHCI disks, visible in Computer Management. How to I go about making them a single mirrored volume in Windows? Note: The data is backed up up on two other separate disks, but it's a fair amount of work to do a restore (over 120'000 files, and I have to reset permissions). Note2: Currently the two disks are identical, and I can use the content of either one for this.
