• How to propose Asp.Net Mvc over other technologies to client?

  How to show benefits of adopting asp.net mvc to client? I mean - we as developers can understand benefits of easier implementation of automated testing, better control over rendered html etc., but what would be strongest motives for client to accept usage of asp.net mvc? Maybe there's some more nice looking examples built with asp.net mvc (excluding stackoverflow) to show? p.s. Please, do not start flame war. In this case - it doesn't matter if asp.net mvc is better than x or vica versa.

  Hi there, I am a Java newbie trying to maintain an application that works fine under J2SE 5.0 (32- and 64-bit) but has a very specific problem when run under Java SE 6 64-bit: [Tims-MPB:~] tlynch% java -version java version "1.6.0_15" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_15-b03-226) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.1-b02-92, mixed mode) The application is cross-platform and reportedly works correctly on Java SE 6 under Windows, though I haven't been able to verify that myself. The program uses a JTextField for some text entry and a JLabel to indicate the text to be entered. • In XAML is there way to bind key press and key release to specific commands?

  In my application I have keys that bound to commands using the KeyBinding class. The command is executed when the key is pressed and released. I have a special case where I want to bind separate commands to the pressed action and to the released action. For example when the space key is pressed I want my app to run a command to enter a special mode. Then when the space key is released I want to run another command to exit that special mode. Currently I do this by manually handling the KeyUp and KeyDown events. Is there anyway to execute commands for pressed and released purely in XAML?

This works great for a single scenario, but what happens when I need multiple "include strategies"? For instance, one situation might call for including the Fees collection and NOT the LineItems collection. Is there any way with RIA Services to control what's included at runtime without redefining your model and/or creating dtos with the attributes statically placed for each use-case?

  So, I have a file called 'dummy' which contains the string: "There is 100% packet loss at node 1". I also have a small script that I want to use to grab the percentage from this file.   I'm building a multiple webbrowser inside tabs( 1 predefine webbrowser control per tab) and I want them all to load at the same time or other words must run in thread. Unfortunately I feel a valid fact came from the error message that this is something not possible. • ListView not showing up in fragment

  When I insert a listview in a fragment in my application, it doesn't show up after I populate it with items. In fact, the application crashes due to a NullPointerException. Can anybody help me? • Algorithm for non-contiguous netmask match

  Hi, I have to write a really really fast algorithm to match an IP address to a list of groups, where each group is defined using a notation like 192.168.0.0/252.255.0.255. As you can see, the bitmask can contain zeros even in the middle, so the traditional "longest prefix match" algorithms won't work. If an IP matches two groups, it will be assigned to the group containing most 1's in the netmask. I'm not working with many entries (let's say < 1000) and I don't want to use a data structure requiring a large memory footprint (let's say 1-2 MB), but it really has to be fast (of course I can't afford a linear search). Do you have any suggestion? Thanks guys. UPDATE: I found something quite interesting at http://www.cse.usf.edu/~ligatti/papers/grouper-conf.pdf, but it's still too memory-hungry for my utopic use case

• DataGridView and checkboxes re-selecting automatically

  I have a strange problem with a DataGridView I'm using which is bound to a table in VB.net I've added a checkbox column to allow a user to tick a bunch of rows that I can then loop through and save off to a different table. All the checkboxes are enabled by default. So it's really a case of unchecking the rows which aren't required. However, the DataGridView re-enables any checkbox that I click after I click on a checkbox in another row. So in effect, only one row can be unchecked at a time. I'm sure I'm probably missing something obvious here?

• Question about mysql indexes on low to medium cardinality columns

  I have a general question about the way that database indexing works, particularly in mysql. Let's say I have a table with a million rows with a column "ClientID" that is distributed relatively equally among 30 values. Thus, this column is very low cardinality (30) relative to the primary key (1 million). Now, I understand that you shouldn't create indexes on low cardinality fields. However, in this case, queries are only ever done with one of the 30 clientIDs. Thus, wouldn't creating an index on ClientID be helpful, as the search space is automatically reduced to 1/30th what it normally would be? Or is my understanding of how the index works flawed?   I have a form that contains 5 check boxes. The user may select one or more of these check boxes. The user may select 2 and leave 3 unchecked or select 4 and leave one unchecked and so on, in that case how can I write the php/mysql code that will insert the form data into the database. With just one selection it's easy, I would do: $checkbox_value = $_POST['i_agree']; mysql_query("INSERT INTO terms (user, pass, conditions) VALUES ('$user','$pass','$checkbox_value')"); But how can I write this when there are multiple check box options and only one or more of them will be checked? I want to insert them all in one column called "tags" separated by commas.

  This has been driving me crazy all day. I need to get a font filename (eg. Arial.ttf) based off of it's name (Arial in this case). The problem is, I am only supplied with the font name (Arial) and weather it's bold, italic or both. Using those pieces of information, I need to find the font file so I can use it for rendering. Some more examples: Calibri, Bold would resolve to calibrib.ttf Calibri, Italic would resolve to calibrii.ttf Any ideas on how I could achieve this in C++ (Win32)

I want to update some column values and, if this column is NULL then set it to its default value (which would be an integer auto-generated from a sequence), but I want to return its value in either case. So I want something like this: UPDATE mytable SET incident_id = COALESCE(incident_id, DEFAULT), other = 'somethingelse' WHERE ... RETURNING incident_id Unfortunately, this doesn't work - it seems that DEFAULT is special and cannot be part of an expression. What's the best way to do this?

  Is there a way to dynamically show and hide preferences? In my case, I have a checkbox preference that would disable or enable one of 2 preference groups ("with-" and "without-handicap" groups). While this would be the ideal GUI in a desktop environment, the "with-handicap" takes up nearly the whole screen, while the other, "without-handicap" takes up only a small portion of the screen. Rather than showing both groups at the same time, I'd like to show only one of them at a time, and dynamically show or hide the 2 groups when the checkbox changes. Is there a way to do this?

I have the problem, that I have an migration in Rails that sets up a default setting for a column, like this example: def self.up add_column :column_name, :bought_at, :datetime, :default => Time.now end Suppose, I like to drop that default settings in a later migration, how do I do that with using rails migrations? My current workaround is the execution of a custom sql command in the rails migration, like this: def self.up execute 'alter table column_name alter bought_at drop default' end But I don't like this approach, because I am now dependent on how the underlying database is interpreting this command. In case of a change of the database this query perhaps might not work anymore and the migration would be broken. So, is there a way to express the undo of a default setting for a column in rails? • Easiest way to rename a model using Django/South?

  Hi everyone, I've been hunting for an answer to this on South's site, google, and SO, but couldn't find a simple way to do this. I want to rename a Django model using South. Say you have the following: class Foo(models.Model): name = models.CharField() class FooTwo(models.Model): name = models.CharField() foo = models.ForeignKey(Foo) and you want to convert Foo to Bar, namely class Bar(models.Model): name = models.CharField() class FooTwo(models.Model): name = models.CharField() foo = models.ForeignKey(Bar) To keep it simple, I'm just trying to change the name from Foo to Bar, but ignore the 'foo' member in FooTwo for now. What's the easiest way to do this using South? a) I could probably do a data migration, but that seems pretty involved. b) Write a custom migration, e.g. db.rename_table('city_citystate', 'geo_citystate'), but I'm not sure how to fix the foreign key in this case. c) An easier way that you know?
