  • Ubuntu Variant / Linux Distros which uses least system resources (RAM, CPU)?

    - by elegantonyx
I have a netbook (an older Asus EEEPC 1005HA) which I want to get rid of Windoze on (I like Windows, but I don't think it works well in a netbook environment). Basically, my question is which Ubuntu variant will use the least RAM and CPU running idle, and/or the same question except when running Firefox and Libreoffice Writer, say. I am also open to suggestions of non-Ubuntu Linux distros, but since this is AskUbuntu I thought the first question would be more appropriate. I have a disk drive which I can attach to the netbook, so it doesn't have to be a Ubuntu Variant / Linux Distro which solely boots from a USB drive. I have at my disposal: DVDs, DVD writer/ disk drive, 4gb flash drive, 8 gb flash drive I was thinking either Lubuntu or Archbang / Crunchbang but I would like some help from more knowledgable people Specs: Can't boot into it right now, but I think I have either Intel Atom N270 @1.60ghz OR Intel Atom N280 @1.66ghz (single core, I think) 2gb RAM 160 GB hard drive

• Ubuntu Natty: 32-bit userland, 64-bit kernel?

    - by dsimcha
I'm trying to manually install a 64-bit kernel for 32-bit Ubuntu. I have my reasons for doing so, but they're too complicated to explain here. Prior to Natty, this worked fine. Now, on Natty, I get the following error message when I try doing it the same way: dsimcha@dsimcha-laptop:~$ sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture linux-image-2.6.38-8-server_2.6.38-8.42_amd64.deb [sudo] password for dsimcha: dpkg: error processing linux-image-2.6.38-8-server_2.6.38-8.42_amd64.deb (--install): cannot access archive: No such file or directory Errors were encountered while processing: linux-image-2.6.38-8-server_2.6.38-8.42_amd64.deb dsimcha@dsimcha-laptop:~$ cd Downloads/ dsimcha@dsimcha-laptop:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture linux-image-2.6.38-8-server_2.6.38-8.42_amd64.deb dpkg: warning: overriding problem because --force enabled: package architecture (amd64) does not match system (i386) (Reading database ... 159153 files and directories currently installed.) • Virtual machine : is it possible to run a 32 bits guest OS on a 64 bits host OS?

    - by Cédric Girard
I am a software developer, and I need to use old version of Borland/Embarcadero Delphi 7 for one software. The others ones are PHP software. I will have soon a 64 bits PC, running Linux, but I need a Windows 32 bits virtual machine for Delphi (because Delphi 7 is a bit old, and our clients still use Windows XP 32 bits systems). I already have a VM under virtualbox for my Delphi environment. Will it run fine, or will I have some problem?

  • How do I run a stable Windows XP kvm guest on Ubuntu 10.04?

    - by Jean-Paul Calderone
I have three Windows XP guests running on a recently upgraded 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04 system. Occasionally (on the order of once every few days), one of the guests will become non-responsive and the kvm process on the host which is running that guest will start consuming 100% CPU. It will continue to do so until it is killed. When restarted, it will be fine for a while, and then the issue repeats. The kvm command line used to run all three guests is this: /usr/bin/kvm -S -M pc-0.12 -enable-kvm -m 1024 -smp 1 -name bigdog21vmxp1 \ -uuid ea47ff84-125b-16f7-9a4d-a6d0d8bab46a \ -chardev socket,id=monitor,path=/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/bigdog21vmxp1.monitor,server,nowait \ -monitor chardev:monitor \ -localtime \ -boot c \ -drive file=/var/lib/libvirt/images/windowsxp-1.qcow2,if=ide,index=0,boot=on,format=qcow2 \ -net nic,macaddr=54:52:00:02:06:0e,vlan=0,name=nic.0 \ -net tap,fd=58,vlan=0,name=tap.0 \ -chardev pty,id=serial0 \ -serial chardev:serial0 \ -parallel none \ -usb \ -usbdevice tablet \ -vnc 127.0.0.1:1 \ -k en-us \ -vga cirrus \ -soundhw es1370 Why do the systems misbehave this way sometimes? And what configuration can I change in order to fix it? Or, if the problem is due to a bug in kvm, what is the process for isolating a kvm failure so that the developers have a chance of fixing it?

  • Ubuntu 10.04 and fedora 14 grub conflict

    - by sawren
I tried to triple boot Windows xp, Fedora 14 and Ubuntu 10.04. I first installed Windows xp, then fedora followed by Ubuntu. The problem is that i don't get option to boot Ubuntu while Xp boots fine. It seems Ubuntu was unable to replace Fedora's grub with its own at MBR. • Can't ping guest OS from Windows XP SP3 host running VIC.

    - by Vittal
Hi, I am running VMware ESX Server 3i Version 3.5.0 and accessing this server using VMware Infrastructure Client Version 2.5.0 on a Windows XP SP3 machine. I have enabled the Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 stack and assigned an IPv6 address (using the netsh command) to the network adapter. The guest OS'es running on ESX Server (includes Win7, W2K8, WinXP) also have IPv6 addresses enabled on their adapters. The adapters are configured to be in VM Network (Bridged mode) and hence have connectivity to the Internet. The VMs are able to ping each other using IPv6 addresses and are also able to ping a physical Win7 machine using IPv6 addresses. However, the Windows XP SP3 machine on which the Client is running is not able to ping any hosts running on ESX Server while the VMs are able to ping this host. Whenever I try to ping from WXP box I get the "Invalid source route specified." error. The WinXP machine is not able to ping the Win7 physical machine too (the same error as above is thrown). Can someone help me understand why I am receiving this error and what I need to do to resolve this error? Thanks, Vittal

  • Windows 7 host with Ubuntu Guest and a performance hit, memory locks?

    - by Cyrylski
I have a brand new Lenovo T510 with Core i5 and 4GB of RAM with Windows 7 on it. I Installed Ubuntu 10.10 in a Virtualbox. For some reason system gets really slow on this setup which makes me really angry. There's a video card shared with full 3D support enabled and 1GB of RAM allocated for the Ubuntu machine. It may sound stupid, but WHY is the whole memory consumed in an instant when I run Virtualbox? I struggled for like 10 minutes restraining myself from a brutal reset, and now everything runs smooth but memory "in use" in Resource Monitor is 3GB flat with only Chrome running. I'm new to Windows 7, but I'm really disappointed with performance at this point... I used to work in a different environment with much slower hardware and there was no such problem (WinXP over Ubuntu, 1GB out of 2GB allocated for WinXP guest on intel GMA). This is, until I clogged RAM totally there. But I was capable of running Chrome, Firefox and Apache server on a 1GB RAM in Ubuntu there and Photoshop CS4 on Windows XP and it worked. In this case I can't go beyond setting up Ubuntu properly. I bet I'm doing something wrong.

  • VirtualBox limits size of .js file, that can be included from guest additions folder?

    - by c69
This question might belong to SuperUser, but i'll try to ask it here anyway, because i believe, some web developers might encountered this weird behavior. When testing a site for IE8/winXP compatibility on VirtualBox i run into weird issue of $ is undefined, which is caused by jQuery (and jQuery UI) being not included, when referenced by relative path, which resolves to file:/// url. Seemingly because their size was too big (above 200KB). Simply replacing links to those 2 big files to http:// ones solved the issue for me. But here is the question: why did this happen ? is it a misconfiguration ? a bug ? a known design decision ? Details: VirtualBox 4.1.8 host os: win7 64bit, guest os: xp sp3 32 bit guest additions installed, page was launched from VB shared folder the bug was manifesting itself in all browsers (even in opera, which ignores ie security settings, afaik) ie configuration is default script was included like this: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/libs/jquery/jquery-1.7.2.js"> exact size limit was not deducted.

  • Unable to boot Windows 7 after installing Ubuntu

    - by Devendra
I have Windows 7 on my machine and then installed Ubuntu 12.04 using a live CD. I can see both Windows 7 and Ubuntu in the grub menu, but when I select Windows 7 it shows a black screen for about 2 seconds and the returns to the Grub menu. • How to convert my backup.cmd into something I can run in Linux?

    - by blade19899
    Back in the day when i was using windows(and a noob at everything IT) i liked batch scripting so much that i wrote a lot of them and one i am pretty proud of that is my backup.cmd(see below). I am pretty basic with the linux bash sudo/apt-get/sl/ls/locate/updatedb/etc... I don't really know the full power of the terminal. If you see the code below can i get it to work under (Ubuntu)linux :) by rewriting some of the windows code with the linux equivalent (btw:this works under xp/vista/7 | dutch/english) @echo off title back it up :home cls echo ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» echo º º echo º typ A/B for the options º echo º º echo ÌÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ͹ echo º º echo º "A"=backup options º echo º º echo º "B"=HARDDISK Options º echo º º echo º º echo ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍŒ set /p selection=Choose: Goto %selection% :A cls echo ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» echo º º echo º typ 1 to start that backup º echo º º echo ÌÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ͹ echo º º echo º "A"=backup options º echo º È1=Documents,Pictures,Music,Videos,Downloads º echo º º echo º "B"=HARDDISK Options º echo º º echo ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍŒ set /p selection=Choose: Goto %selection% :B cls echo ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» echo º º echo º typ HD to start the disk check º echo º º echo ÌÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ͹ echo º º echo º "A"=backup options º echo º º echo º "B"=HARDDISK Options º echo º ÈHD=find and repair bad sectors º echo º º echo ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍŒ set /p selection=Choose: Goto %selection% :1 cls if exist "%userprofile%\desktop" (set desk=desktop) else (set desk=Bureaublad) if exist "%userprofile%\documents" (set docs=documents) else (set docs=mijn documenten) if exist "%userprofile%\pictures" (set pics=pictures) else (echo cant find %userprofile%\pictures) if exist "%userprofile%\music" (set mus=music) else (echo cant find %userprofile%\music) if exist "%userprofile%\Videos" (set vids=videos) else (echo cant find %userprofile%\videos) if exist "%userprofile%\Downloads" (set down=downloads) else (echo cant find %userprofile%\Downloads) cls echo. examples (D:\) (D:\Backup) (D:\Backup\18-4-2011) echo. echo. if there is no "D:\backup" folder then the folder will be created echo. set drive= set /p drive=storage: echo start>>backup.log echo Name:%username%>>backup.log echo Date:%date%>>backup.log echo Time:%time%>>backup.log echo ========================================%docs%===========================================>>backup.log echo %docs% echo Source:"%userprofile%\%docs%" echo Destination:"%drive%\%username%\%docs%" echo %time%>>backup.log xcopy "%userprofile%\%docs%" "%drive%\%username%\%docs%" /E /I>>Backup.log echo 20%% cls echo ========================================"%pics%"=========================================>>backup.log echo "%pics%" echo Source:"%userprofile%\%pics%" echo Destination:"%drive%\%username%\%pics%" echo %time%>>backup.log xcopy "%userprofile%\%pics%" "%drive%\%username%\%pics%" /E /I>>Backup.log echo 40%% cls echo ========================================"%mus%"=========================================>>backup.log echo "%mus%" echo Source:"%userprofile%\%mus%" echo Destination:"%drive%\%username%\%mus%" echo %time%>>backup.log xcopy "%userprofile%\%mus%" "%drive%\%username%\%mus%" /E /I>>Backup.log echo 60%% cls echo ========================================"%vids%"========================================>>backup.log echo %vids% echo Source:"%userprofile%\%vids%" echo Destination:"%drive%\%username%\%vids%" echo %time%>>backup.log xcopy "%userprofile%\%vids%" "%drive%\%username%\%vids%" /E /I>>Backup.log echo 80%% cls echo ========================================"%down%"========================================>>backup.log echo "%down%" echo Source:"%userprofile%\%down%" echo Destination:"%drive%\%username%\%down%" echo %time%>>backup.log xcopy "%userprofile%\%down%" "%drive%\%username%\%down%" /E /I>>Backup.log echo end>>backup.log echo %username% %date% %time%>>backup.log echo 100%% cls echo backup Compleet copy "backup.log" "%drive%\%username%" del "backup.log" pushd "%drive%\%username%" echo close backup.log to continue with backup script "backup.log" echo press any key to retun to the main menu pause>nul goto :home :HD echo finds and repairs bad sectors echo typ in harddisk letter (C: D: E:) set HD= set /p HD=Hard Disk: chkdsk %HD% /F /R /X pause goto :home

  • Oracle is Sponsoring LinuxCon Europe 2012

    - by Zeynep Koch
Architecture is amazing in Barcelona but you will also be impressed with Oracle Linux sessions in LinuxCon Europe as well.  Oracle is one of the key sponsors in LinuxCon Europe and we have great sessions to show you why Oracle Linux is best for your "IT architecture"! We also have a booth where you can pick up latest Oracle Linux and Oracle VM DVD Kit and Virtualization for Dummies booklet. Don't forget to visit us at technology showcase Booth #19. Oracle Sessions at LinuxCon Europe 2012:  1. OCFS2: Status and Overview - Lenz Grimmer, Oracle Wednesday November 7, 2012 10:40am - 11:25am Venue: Diamant OCFS2, Oracle's general-purpose shared-disk cluster file system for Linux has come a long way since its development started in 2003. Distributed under the GPL and part of the mainline Linux Kernel, it is also included in Oracle Linux and plays a vital role in products like Oracle VM, Oracle RAC or E-Business Suite. This presentation will provide a general technical overview as well as an update on the latest developments. Attendees will learn about the features and improvements that set OCFS2 apart from other Linux-based cluster file systems, including: Heartbeat implementation: global vs. local heartbeats Storage optimizations: Extent-based Allocations, Hole punching, Reflinks 2. Status of Linux Tracing - Elena Zannoni, Oracle Wednesday November 7, 2012 11:35am - 12:20am Venue: Diamant There have been many developments recently in the Linux tracing area. The tracing infrastructure in the kernel is getting more robust, with  the recent introduction of uprobes to allow the implementation of user  space tracing, and new features of perf. There are many tracing tools to choose from, including the newest kid on the block, DTrace for Linux.  This talk will take the audience through the main tracing facilities  available today whether more tightly integrated with the kernel code, or maintained stand alone. 3. MySQL Security Model and Pluggable Authentication - Kristofer Pettersson, Oracle Wednesday November 7, 2012 1:50pm - 2:35pm Venue: Diamant With an increasing security awareness among web and cloud developers, knowing how to secure your database from unauthorized or malicious access has become important. This talk explains the MySQL security model, pluggable authentication, new auditing features and rounds off with some pointers on how to securely integrate your database into your Linux web stack. We look forward to seeing you in Barcelona, Spain on November 5-9, 2012. Register today

  • How to bridge Debian guest VM to VPN via Cisco AnyConnect Client running on Windows Vista host

    - by bgoodr
I am running Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client version 2.5.3054 on a laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium (version 6.0.6002) Service Pack 2. I am running the VMware Player version 4.0.2 build-591240. The host operating system running under VMware Player is Debian 6.0.2.1 i386. The laptop is connected to a wireless connection, and I can browse the web from Windows Vista using Firefox just fine. I am able to boot into the Debian VM and open up a browser and access websites on the WAN from within the VM just fine. I can ping real Linux hosts on my LAN via: ping <lan_system>.local where <lan_system> is the hostname returned from uname -a on that system on my LAN. From a DOS CMD shell, I am able to ping hosts that exist on the remote network served by the Cisco AnyConnect Client's VPN network (and without the .local suffix applied as above): ping <remote_system> However, from within the Debian VM, I expect to be able to also ping those same remote hosts (<remote_system>) that are tunnelled over the VPN set up by Cisco AnyConnect Client. Let's say that I can ping a <remote_system> called flubber from a DOS CMD prompt just fine. When I execute Linux ping command from inside the Debian VM via: ping flubber It returns immediately with this output: ping: unknown host flubber For reference since I suspect it will be useful, here is the output of the route print command from the DOS CMD prompt: route print =========================================================================== Interface List 30 ...00 05 9a 3c 7a 00 ...... • ASA5505 Novice. Setting up Outside/Inside/and DMZ as Guest Network

    - by GriffJ
I need a little help in developing a config for our ASA5505. I'm an MCSA/MCITPAS but I don't have a lot of practical cisco experience. Here is what I need help with, we currently have a PIX as our boarder gateway and well it's antiquated and it only has a 50 user license which means I'm constantly clearing local-host throughout the day as people complain. I discovered that the last IT person bought at couple ASA5505s and they've been sitting in the back of a cupboard. So far I've duplicated the configuration from the pix to the asa but as I was going to be going this far I thought I'd go further and remove another old cisco router that was used only for the guest network, I know the asa can do both jobs. So I'm going to paste a scenario I wrote up with the actual IPs changed to protect the innocent. ... Outside Network: 1.2.3.10 255.255.255.248 (we have a /29) Inside Network: 10.10.36.0 255.255.252.0 DMZ Network: 192.168.15.0 255.255.255.0 Outside Network on e0/0 DMZ Network on e0/1 Inside Network on e0/2-7 DMZ Network has DHCPD Enabled. DMZ DHCPD Pool is 192.168.15.50-192.168.15.250 DMZ Network needs to be able to see DNS on Inside Network at 10.10.37.11 and 10.10.37.12 DMZ Network needs to be able to access webmail on inside network at 10.10.37.15 DMZ Network needs to be able to access business website on inside network at 10.10.37.17 DMZ Network needs to be able to access the outside network (access to the internet). Inside Network has NO DHCPD. (dhcp is handled by domain controller) Inside Network needs to be able to see anything on the DMZ network. • Gearman too many processes issue

    - by Roman Newaza
I use Net_Gearman from PECL, Gearmand 1.1.11 and Gearman Manager. Every time I add background job, I can see new worker listed with no Function, nor Id in Ggearman-Monitor: If I add many messages in the bash loop, after some time it becomes very slow. for i in $(seq 0 9999); do php Client.php && echo $i; done Yesterday, the situation was even worse - I had many error messages in Gearmand log regarding Too many open files and once I added --file-descriptors=49152 as an option and swithched to 1.1.11 from 1.0.6, these errors gone. • Ubuntu 12.04 + Raid0 + Windows 7 not loading

    - by Douglas
please someone help me.... (Sorry for my english) Hi, I have a Pc with 2 Hd (1Tb each) on Raid0. I had a Windows 7 64bits working for several months. When I installed the Windows I let a 100Gb partition empty to install Ubuntu someday. I was using Linux on a Virtualbox, but this week I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 in this 100Gb partition. I used the Ubuntu alternate cd, because the 'normal' cd was giving me trouble with the Raid0. The grub installation always reported a error. After a lot of work I found that I nedded to install grub on partition /dev/mapper/isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid1 (see Bootinfo below). The Windows installation created a 100Mb boot partition, so I needed to install grub in this partition. Now I have the Ubuntu working 100% ok. The problem is, the Windows is not booting! The windows option is present on the grub menu, but when I choose the windows option there is a black screen and after that the grub is reloaded. My Bootinfo is: Boot Info Script 0.61 [1 April 2012] ============================= Boot Info Summary: =============================== => Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks at sector 1 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks in partition 1 for /boot/grub. => Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the MBR of /dev/mapper/isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid and looks at sector 1 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks in partition 1 for /boot/grub. sda1: __________________________________________________________________________ File system: Boot sector type: Unknown Boot sector info: Mounting failed: mount: unknown filesystem type '' sda2: __________________________________________________________________________ File system: Boot sector type: Unknown Boot sector info: Mounting failed: mount: unknown filesystem type '' mount: unknown filesystem type '' sda3: __________________________________________________________________________ File system: Extended Partition Boot sector type: Unknown Boot sector info: isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid1: ________________________________________________________ File system: ntfs Boot sector type: Grub2 (v1.99) Boot sector info: Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the boot sector of isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid1 and looks at sector 3841862992 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks for (,msdos5)/boot/grub on this drive.
