Which SOA architecture is most appropriate for a Java application?

I am currently working on a pretty large Java 6 application where we are looking to split some of our functionality out into a service oriented architecture. It seems that the primary SOA framework for the application space is OSGi and I have been looking into Felix and Knopplerfish but I wanted to make sure that this isn't my only option. Does it make sense to use an actual web service protocol for our application like SOAP, even though we are not building a web app? Is this even acceptable? Have any of you used an implementation of OSGi (Felix, etc.) with your desktop application? if so, how did it go? Do you know of anything better? We're all pretty new to SOA here so any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do you create your own drag-n-drop GUI designer ?

Hello I was looking at creating a UI for developing web forms, similar to the Netbeans Visual JSF form designer.It will be targeted to use GWT/GXT components.I am looking at a look very similar to VS/Netbeans. Any thoughts on where/how to start ? Initially, I would prefer to have it as a standalone application, later develop it as eclipse plugin. I have already evaluated the extjs designer and the eclipse plugin from instantiations, but i would prefer to have it developed on my own, as it looks challenging, Also, I have few custom components that have been developed. Is it good to continue as MFC developer or good to know .NET as well?

Normally people say MFC is little clumsy. It makes UI developement slightly difficult to maintain since it has lot of auto generated code. It has good architecture (doc/view) but is not transparent like Win32 programming to understand how window program works in the background. So with this situation, is it good to extend the exposure on MFC programming or better to switch to .NET since for faster UI design with ease in maintenance. How globally companies are looking into MFC as a technology for UI developments. Are they comfortable in supporting their developers to continue with MFC or looking for changing their development technology.

How to view shell commands used by eclipse "run configurations"

Given a "run configuration" in Eclipse, I want to print out the associated shell command that would be used to run it. For example: Right now, in Eclipse, if I click "play" it will run: mvn assembly:directory -Dmaven.test.skip=true I don't see that command, I just know that's what the IDE must run, at some point. However, some of the other run configurations are far more complex with long classpaths and virtual machine options and, frankly, sometimes I have no idea what the equivalent shell command would be (particularly when it comes to Flex). There must be some way to access the shell command that would be associated with a "Run Configuration" in Eclipse/Flex Builder. This information must be available, which leads me to believe someone has written a plugin to display it. Or maybe there's already an option built into Eclipse for accessing this. So is there a way to, essentially, convert an Eclipse run configuration into a shell command? (for context only: I'm asking because I'm writing a bash script that automates everything I do, during development--from populating the Database all the way to opening Firefox and clearing the cache before running the web app. So every command I run from the IDE needs to exist in the script. Some are tricky to figure out.)

Powershell scripts to backup SQL, SVN

I'm trying to use PowerShell to create some backups, and then to copy these to a web folder (or, in other words, upload them to a WebDAV share). At first I thought I'd do the WebDAV stuff from within PowerShell, but it seems this still requires a fair amount of "manual labour", ie: constructing HTTP requests. I then settled for creating a web folder from the script and letting Windows handle the WebDAV stuff. It seems that all it takes to create a web folder is to create a standard shortcut, as described here. What I can't figure out is how to actually copy files to the shortcut's target..? Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way. It would be ideal if I could somehow encrypt the credentials for the WebDAV in the script, then have it create the web folder, shunt over the files, and delete the web folder again. Or even better, not use a web folder at all. Third option would be to just create the web folder manually and leave it there, though I'd rather not. Any ideas/pointers/tips? :)

When i declare mac = 123, my internet explorer and firefox will keep refresh non-stop. And if i declare mac = getMacAddress it returns a value 1... I'm able to do a document.write(getMacAddress()) and it would able to display the mac address nicely. 1) Why my explorer will keep refreshing non-stop when i code it manually with "123" 2) why is the document.write able to display out, and when i store it to the cookie, somehow it didnt mange to capture into the cookie and it return a value of "1". WordPress plugin to output a certain category on content page tweak help

I'm using WordPress plugin Category Page to display the most recent 5 posts from a certain category on a regular content page (not the blog page) of a website. Right now the plugin is limited to display the post title linked to the post page. This is a video blog type site and I need the plugin to display the post title (as it does now) with the video as well. Probably just telling the script to show the content would work but I don't know how to tweak it. Get a selected radio button value after POST to set other fields enabled/disabled

I have an MVC application with a simple control to all selection of All Dates or selecting a Date Range. The radio buttons have an onclick handler to enable/disable the dat pickers. All work well so far. When I try to set the correct context state for the datepickers after doing a POST I cannot get the jQuery selector to return the radio buttons checked value. Using var selected = $('#DateSelection_AllDates'); will return the first radio button value as expected i.e. applying the ':checked' filter ALWAYS returns undefined. Can anyone see anything wrong here?

I'm controlling a embedded youtube chromeless player with javascript, and I want to hide it occasionally by setting display: none. However, when I show the player again, it loses its youtube methods. jQuery AJAX Redirection problem

Hello please consider this: On page A I have a link that takes you to page B when JS is off, but when JS is on, I want to replace content on current page with content from the page B. Pages A and B are in fact the same script that is able to tell AJAX calls from regular ones and serve the content appropriately. Everything works fine, as long as there are no redirects involved. But, sometimes there is a 301 redirect and what seems to be happening is that client browser then makes a second request, which will return with a 200 OK. Only the second request is sent without a X-Requested-With header, therefore I cannot tell within my script wether it came from AJAX or not, and will send a complete page instead of just the content. I have tried checking for 301 status code in my error, success, and complete handlers but none of them worked. It seems to be handling the 301 behind the scenes. Joining Tables Based on Foreign Keys

I have a table that has a lot of fields that are foreign keys referencing a related table. I am writing a script in PHP that will do the db queries. When I query this table for its data I need to know the values associated with these keys not the key. How do most people go about this? A 101 way to do this would be to query this table for its data including the foreign keys and then query the related tables to get each key's value. This could be a lot of queries (~10). Question 1: I think I could write 1 query with a bunch of joins. Would that be better? This approach also requires the querying script to know which table fields are foreign keys. Since I have many tables like this but all with different fields, this means writing nice generic functions is hard. MySQL InnoDB tables allow for foreign constraints. I know the database has these set up correctly. Question 2: What about the idea of querying the table and identifying what the constraints are and then matching them up using whatever process I decide on from Question 1. I like this idea but never see it being used in code. Makes me think its not a good idea for some reason. I would use something like SHOW CREATE TABLE tbl_name; to find what constraints/relationships exist for that table. Thank you for any suggestions or advice.

Special characters stripped by mySQL/PHP JSON

Hi, I have a simple PHP script to extract data from a mySQL database and encode it as JSON. The problem is that special characters (for example German ä or ß characters) are stripped from the JSON response. Everything after the first special character for any single field is just stripped. The fields are set to utf8_bin, and in phpMyAdmin the characters display correctly. Standalone jQuery "touch" method?

So, I'm looking to implement the ability for a plugin I wrote to read a touch "swipe" from a touch-capable internet device, like an iPhone, iPad or android. Is there anything out there? I'm not looking for something as full as jQtouch, though was considering reverse engineering the code I would need out of it. Any suggestions on the best way to approach this? A snippet of code already available? Addendum: I realize in hindsight the solution won't strictly be jQuery, as I'm pretty sure there aren't any built-in methods to handle this. I would expect standard Javascript to find itself in the answer.

Can I create a collection in Scala that uses different equals/hashCode/compare implementations?

I'm looking for as simple way to create an identity set. I just want to be able to keep track of whether or not I've "seen" a particular object while traversing a graph. I can't use a regular Set because Set uses "==" (the equals method in Scala) to compare elements. What I want is a Set that uses "eq." Is there any way to create a Set in Scala that uses some application-specified method for testing equality rather than calling equals on the set elements? I looked for some kind of "wrapEquals" method that I could override but did not find it. I know that I could use Java's IdentityHashMap, but I'm looking for something more general-purpose. Another idea I had was to just wrap each set element in another object that implements equals in terms of eq, but it's wasteful to generate tons of new objects just to get a new equals implementation.
