• Should classes from the same namespace be kept in the same assembly?

  For example, ISerializable and the Serializable Attribute are both in the System.Runtime.Serialization namespace, but not the assembly of the same name. On the other hand, DataContract attributes are in the namespace/assembly System.Runtime.Serialization. This causes confusion when a class can have using System.Runtime.Serialization but still not have reference to the System.Runtime.Serialization assembly, meaning DataContract cannot be found. Should this be avoided in practice, or is it common for namespaces to be split over multiple assemblies? What other issues should one be careful of when doing this?

The example at the bottom of the MSDN page on MSBuild Inline Tasks already provides pretty much all you need for that with a TokenReplace task that receives a file path, a token and a replacement and uses string.Replace with that. Similar in spirit but way more useful in its implementation is the RegexTransform in NuGet’s Build.tasks. It’s much better not only because it supports full regular expressions, but also because it receives items, which makes it very amenable to batching (applying the transforms to multiple items).   The lead developer of the FO engine send me by chance an email about a REALLY nice feature I did not know about. Did you ever encounter a long table with merged cells, where the merged cell went on to the next page? While column headers are by default repeated on the next page, row headers are not. Tables with group-left column and pivot tables are prime examples where this problem occurs. I have seen reports where merged cells could go over multiple pages and you would need to back to find the row header on previous pages. The BI Publisher RTF templates have a special tag you can added to a merged cell to repeat the contents after each page break. You just need to add the following (wordy) tag to the next merged table cell: true Example: 2nd page of report before adding the tag 2nd page of report after adding the tag. I've spent a lot of time looking into Liferay, as I don't have any experience in building CMSs, and want to either use it, or get ideas of how to build a decent system. The time line is short, requirements are vague, yada yada Is Liferay a good technology to work with when showing the client (who may be very low on computer expertise) a user interface to build a site? The thing is, I want the power and flexibility to avoid the learning curve in building a CMS like product, but I don't want to waste time learning a new technology only to find its over-kill, or can't do the simple - but uncommon and unimplemented - things that we are asked to add as features Ideally I'd like to provide multiple web interfaces to the core API to build the sites - one that is very powerful, and another that is watered down and easy to use.

  In a C++ program that doesn't contain legacy C code, is there a guideline regarding the maximum number of levels of indirection that should be used in the source code? I know that in C (as opposed to C++), some programmers have used pointers to pointers for a multiple dimension array, but for the case of arrays, there are data structures in C++ that can be used to avoid the pointers to pointers. Are users who still create pointers to pointers (or more than this) trying to use pointers to pointers only for performance ETC. reasons? I have tried NOT to use any more than a pointer to a pointer, only in the case that a pointer needed modification; does anyone have any other official or unofficial guidelines or rules regarding the number of levels of indirection?

  Precondition: I read this question/answer about using shaders, or spritebatch, to render and mark a sprite. I need to do something like that. I also have a 2D lighting PoC which I need to write. The way it will work will basically be something like: Draw all the sprites Draw lighting gradients to create a lighting texture Multiply/add the lighting texture to achieve different effects (I use multiple passes of add/multiply the lighting texture to achieve different effects.) My question is really about a generalization: can I say with certainty that pixel shaders are always faster than adding/multiplying textures to the SpriteBatch? Or that adding/multiplying is always faster? Or if it's not generalizable, how do I decide which approach to take, given that I can probably code either of them? (If it matters, I'm using MonoGame 3.0 beta for Windows games)

• Intermittent silent failures when receiving email

  I’ve had a company host my website and email for the last six months or so and I’m having intermittent and silent failures where emails sent to me are not received. The sender never receives a “delivery notification failure” message. This has happened on multiple domains (@gmail.com, @microsoft.com) I’ve experienced it happening first hand when I sent a mail to myself from another account but I was unable to reproduce the error. It’s very rare (one in every 300 emails or so) The mails are not routed to my junk folder :) Obviously I’m worried about the effect this has on my business – but what can I do? I don’t believe I have enough information to diagnose the problem (neither does my hosting company when I presented them with the same information) – should I switch to another host?

  I'm currently working on a 2D soft-body physics engine (since none exist right now -_-), but I'm worried that there's no point to spending what will most likely be years on it. Although I love working on it, I doubt such an engine would get any income considering anyone willing to pay money for the library will likely to be working in 3D. Do 2D games have any sort of future in the game industry? Should I just drop my engine and find something meaningful to work on? Bonus: I've been trying to think of a unique way to implement my physics engine in a 2d game by looking at games that are multiple dimensions, but still in 2d perspective like Paper Mario. Any ideas?

I used the tutorial from http://www.backtrack-linux.org/wiki/index.php/Java_Install Because I had some trouble once, I knew that there are multiple library folders, so I linked into all mozilla plugin folders that there are. /root/.mozilla/plugins /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/ /usr/lib/firefox-addons /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins java -version returns java version "1.7.0_07" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_07-b10) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.3-b01, mixed mode) But when I go to firefox plugins, it's not listed. What do I need to do, so that firefox recognizes java?

• Predicting advantages of database denormalization

  I was always taught to strive for the highest Normal Form of database normalization, and we were taught Bernstein's Synthesis algorithm to achieve 3NF. This is all very well and it feels nice to normalize your database, knowing that fields can be modified while retaining consistency. However, performance may suffer. That's why I am wondering whether there is any way to predict the speedup/slowdown when denormalizing. That way, you can build your list of FD's featuring 3NF and then denormalize as little as possible. I imagine that denormalizing too much would waste space and time, because e.g. giant blobs are duplicated or it because harder to maintain consistency because you have to update multiple fields using a transaction. Summary: Given a 3NF FD set, and a set of queries, how do I predict the speedup/slowdown of denormalization? Link to papers appreciated too.

Part of my job requires me to learn a Web development framework that I am not currently familiar with. I get paid by the hour. So the question is: Is it wholly ethical to spend multiple hours of the day reading through documentation and tutorials and be paid for this time where I am not actively developing for our product? Or should the bulk of this learning be done at home, or otherwise off hours, to allow for more full-on development of our application during the work day?
