• Visual Studio 2008 / ASP.NET 3.5 / C# -- issues with intellisense, references, and builds

  Hey all, Hoping you can help me -- the strangest thing seems to have happened with my VS install. System config: Windows 7 Pro x64, Visual Studio 2008 SP1, C#, ASP.NET 3.5. I have two web site projects in a solution. I am referencing NUnit / NHibernate (did this by right-clicking on the project and selecting "Add Reference". I've done this for several projects in the past). Things were working fine but recently stopped working and I can't figure out why. Intellisense completely disappears for any files in my App_Code directory, and none of the references are recognized (they are recognized by any file in the root directory of the web site project. Additionally, pretty simple commands like the following (in Page_Load) fail (assume TextBox1 is definitely an element on the page): if (Page.IsPostBack) { str test1; test1 = TextBox1.Text; } It says that all the page elements are null or that it can't access them. At first I thought it was me, but due to the combination of issues, it seems to be Visual Studio itself. I've tried clearing the temp directories & rebuilding the solution. I've also tried tools -- options -- text editor settings to ensure intellisense is turned on. I'd appreciate any help you can give! Thanks, Sean

  Hi all, I have a very strange problem that I cannot fix and don't know what's going on... I am using VS 2010 Premium and .NET 4.0. Here are my steps to simulate the problem. Step 1. Create a new VB class library project named "MyClassLib" Step 2. Create a new class named "MyTestingClass". Public Class MyTestingClass Inherits System.ComponentModel.Design.CollectionEditor Public Sub New() MyBase.New(GetType(List(Of String))) End Sub End Class Step 3. Add two .net reference. "System.Design" and "System.Drawing". Step 4. Create a new VB console application named "MyClassExe" Step 5. Add "MyClassLib" reference to "MyClassExe". Step 6. Open Module1.vb in "MyClassExe" project Step 7. In the Main method, type Dim a = New MyClassLib.MyTestingClass() Step 8. Try to compile "MyClassLib". It doesn't have problem. Step 9. Try to compile "MyClassExe". It cannot compile because the WHOLE MyClassLib cannot be found!!! I have no idea what's going on? Moreover, the same case happens in C#. Does anyone know what's the problem with "System.Design"? Thank!!!

• How to create database records for a financial year

  Hello, I need to create entities (specifically contracts) in a database table that are associated with a financial year. These contracts will be applied to projects. Any contract variation will be recorded by creating a new contract record for the same financial year but the original will remain associated with the project as a history. The projects can last several years and so at any one time a project will have a live contract record for each year as well as any number of historic contracts for that year. All of which is incidental but I'm trying to provide some context. If the contracts where for the year - it would be easy and I'd just store the Year either as a date field with the 1st of January or just an Integer. However the contracts run for financial years and I don't know how to approach this. I don't want a separate table containing the financial years as I don't want the users to have to maintain this. I don't want to store the financial year as a string "2009/2010" as this is not ideal for sorting/extracting the data. Any ideas will be helpful, my best so far is to have starting and ending year in 2 columns and just "KNOW" that starting is April of the year etc Thanks

• CSRF error when trying to log onto Django admin page with w3m on Emacs23

  I normally use Firefox and have had no problems with the admin page on my Django website. But I use Emacs23 for writing my posts, and wanted to be able to use w3m in Emacs to copy the stuff across. When I try to log into my admin pages, it gives the CSRF error: CSRF verification failed. Request aborted. Help Reason given for failure: No CSRF or session cookie. ... Is there a way that I could get w3m to work with my admin page? I am not sure if the problem lies with the way the admin is set up on Django or with the Emacs or w3m settings.

• Why won't VS2010 RC use my existing types when I add a service reference?

  I have a huge problem getting services references in VS2010 RC to use existing assemblies. Even though I have a class library with all the data contracts (classes marked with DataContract and properties with DataMember) that is shared between the service project and the consuming project (which is a class library), when I add a service reference, the data contracts are regenerated withing the service reference instead of using the existing types. When I was using VS2010 beta 2, this worked fine, and I have existing service references using the very same data contracts. But if I add a new service reference, or even update an old one, it won't use the existing types anymore. I have made a mini-test-solution, with one service, one data contract type and one console app as a consumer (all in the same solution), and there it seems to work, but that's no great comfort to me. Is there any way to see why it can't use the existing types? Edit to clearify. It works to generate the proxy classes with svcutil.exe, and point to the data contracts dll, like this: svcutil.exe http://localhost/MyService.svc /reference:[Path To DataContracts]\DataContracts.dll /n:*,MyProject.MyServiceReference /ct:System.Collections.Generic.List`1 The question is, what possible reason could there be for Visual Studio to generate its own datacontracts instead of using the existing ones even though the "reuse" checkbox is checked and the datacontracts assembly is referenced.

• Publishing artifacts with sources on archiva

  At work I'm dipping my toes in managing project dependencies with maven. We use Apache Archiva (1.2.1) as a local repository and proxy. I'm adding artifact for open source project, that is not published on any public repository. I've learned that to publish the sources I should use the Classifier field on Upload artifact page. The sources are then listed alongside the jar and pom when I browse the repository. But when I update my maven dependencies I get only the jar and pom from the repository. I noticed that sources are also missing when the archiva proxies for me the downloads from other public repositories. I didn't find any configuration options in Archiva's admin pages to serve the sources... What am I missing? Update: I was missing the fact that artifact sources have to be downloaded manually. I.e. the maven client has to request them, which is controlled by command line option -DdownloadSources=true. Maven Integration for Eclipse has a preference setting to always download them as described in Resolving artifact sources. Archiva then serves the sources for local artifacts or proxies the request to remote repositories and caches the sources for future requests.

• Flash CS4 compiler Error 1120 when embedding pngs into class instance variables.

  I have a Flash CS4 (Flash 9 ActionScript 3.0) project that compiles and runs perfectly on my machine. However it is part of a big batch of fla's that I want to compile on another (faster) machine. When I copy the project (the fla and all actionscripts and assets files) to the faster machine, it's Flash CS4 compiler gives me compiler error 1120 "Access of undefined property ButtonPause_PauseNormal". The property "PauseNormal" is an embedded png. The PNG is available. No transcoder errors. • Creating a scm browser for an RCP application.

  I have an RCP app that saves its project as an xml file and currently the user just selections a directory to save that file and then uses the open file dialog to open the project. We are thinking about enhancing it to allow users to check in/out from a source code manager. This will make it easier for users to share their projects with each others with all the benefits of a scm. I need something similar to Subclipses, but i was thinking of using the maven svn plugin so that it is more flexible which on which scm is used. It would probably better to keep it simple because most users won't have a clue what a scm is. An ideal would be just having a Checkout menu option which opens a dialog similar to the Open File dialog. I was wondering if anyone had an example of how to use the maven scm. What calls to make to set the scm location and to get the file? Or if there is a better way of going about this. Thanks!

• VS2008 - Find and Replace - Searches too many files.

  I've used VS2008 a lot and have never had this problem. However, I started a new job and am using a new machine. Ever since I've gotten here the VS Find feature has been acting funny. I first noticed it when I did a replace all for "All Open Files". The project wouldn't build because the values had actually been replaced in other files within the solution that were not open and didn't even open after I pressed replace all. I have found that I can never use replace all on this machine because I never know what it is going to do. Even if I just do a find on "Current Document", once it's done with the document and I should get that message that says "No more matches found" it actually OPENS another random file from my solution where there is a match and keeps on going. It seems to never make any difference what "Look in" option I've chosen. My coworker has an install off the same disk and claims to not be experiencing this. We're in the middle of a stressful, huge project with a close deadline so I know my boss won't let me do a reinstall. Has anyone else ever had this happen? Anyone know a fix?? Thanks, Pam

I would really like to be able to attempt to call my web service / db, catch any faults such as a communication failure and then retry the same operation in 1 hours time (after I have logged the exception). • Ivy failed to resolve dependency : What to check, what to do ?

  Hi everyone, I'm using Ivy to resolve dependency in my very small project. It's the first time I'm doing that and it's more to learn as my project is very small. I had a problem 5 minutes ago, when trying to download log4j. • C# debugging issue: No symbols are loaded for any call stack frame.

  Hi - I'm trying to step into a method referenced in an external dll from a C# web service dll. I'm developing the web service code and can step into it from my Winforms app. The dll I'm trying to step into from the web service was developed by someone else, and I have the dll and pdb files. When I try to step into it I'm getting the message below: 'No symbols are loaded for any call stack frame. The source code cannot be displayed'. Here is my project setup: .NET 3.5, VS 2008 Professional, IIS 7 running on Vista Ultimate Winforms app WF1.exe, referencing web service dll WS1.dll, in 1 solution on my machine Database access dll DA1.dll compiled by another developer, referenced by WS1.dll DA1.dll and DA1.pdb files located in root directory of WS1 web service project WS1 web service compiled and published to my local IIS, DA1.dll and DA1.pdb files get copied to the IIS WS1 bin directory So far so good and everything works to a point. I break and step into WF1.exe then break and step into a method on WS1.dll no problems. However when I try to step into a method on DA1.dll the error occurs. Any help appreciated. Cheers, Ciaran

• SubSonic 3 screws up selecteditem?

  If you have a moment, please try this: -Download Subsonic 3. -Start a new proj and add SS's ActiveRecord templates. -Point it to any SQL Server DB and generate the classes. -Add a WPF project. -Create a window and add a combobox or listbox. -Set the ItemsSource from the SS DAL, and format it how you wish. -Add a button that will show you some value from the SelectedItem (using messagebox, console, whatever). -Run the project. -Click on the third item in the list. -Click on the second item in the list. -Click on the button. When I do that, the button gives me the value of the THIRD item, not the second. In other words, once the SelectedItem is set the first time it STAYS, no matter which item is subsequently highlighted on the screen. This is happening to me whatever control I use (combobox, listbox, even datagrid) and it ONLY happens with Subsonic Activerecord objects. If I write my own POCOs with identical properties and bind a list of them instead, the controls behave as expected. Does this happen to you? Any ideas?

• Accessing Virtual Host from outside LAN

  I'm setting up a web development platform that makes things as easy as possible to write and test all code on my local machine, and sync this with my web server. I setup several virtual hosts so that I can access my projects by typing in "project" instead of "localhost/project" as the URL. I also want to set this up so that I can access my projects from any network. I signed up for a DYNDNS URL that points to my computer's IP address. This worked great from anywhere before I setup the virtual hosts. Now when I try to access my projects by typing in my DYNDNS URL, I get the 403 Forbidden Error message, "You don't have permission to access / on this server." To setup my virtual hosts, I edited two files - hosts in the system32/drivers/etc folder, and httpd-vhosts.conf in the Apache folder of my WAMP installation. In the hosts file, I simply added the server name to associate with 127.0.0.1. I added the following to the http-vhosts.conf file: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost DocumentRoot "c:/wamp/www/ladybug" ServerName ladybug ErrorLog "logs/your_own-error.log" CustomLog "logs/your_own-access.log" common </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost DocumentRoot "c:/wamp/www" ServerName localhost ErrorLog "logs/localhost-error.log" CustomLog "logs/localhost-access.log" common </VirtualHost> Any idea why I can't access my projects from typing in my DYNDNS URL? Also, is it possible to setup virtual hosts so that when I type in http://projects from a random computer outside of my network, I access url.dyndns.info/projects (a.k.a. my WAMP projects on my home computer)? • jQueryUI Slider handle not moving

  I'm trying to implement a jQuery slider with increments. I've gone from, the actual project page, to a test page of the project with just the slider, to just the slider. In all cases I've been unable to get the handle to move. It also seems to have a width of 1px or similar. • Convert svn repository to hg - authentication fails

  I'm trying to convert an existing svn repository to a mercurial repo with the following command hg convert <repository> <folder> My problem is that the svn repository's authentication is done with p12 certificates. I'm a bit lost on how to configure the certificate for the hg client so that I can pull the svn repo and convert it. Currently, if I try to run the above command, I get initializing destination hg-client repository abort: error: _ssl.c:480: error:14094410:SSL routines:SSL3_READ_BYTES:sslv3 alert handshake failure In other words, it cannot find the required certificate. The question is, how do I configure my hg client so that it can use my certificate? I'm using the command line hg client on linux.

• How can I display an ASP.NET MVC html part from one application in another

  We have several asp.net MVC apps in the following setup SecurityApp (root application - handles forms auth for SSO and has a profile edit page) Application1 (virtual directory) Application2 (virtual directory) Application3 (virtual directory) so that domain.com points to SecurityApp and domain.com/Application1 etc point to their associated virtual directories. All of our Single Sign On (SSO) is working properly using forms authentication. Based on the users permissions when logging in a menu that lists their available applications and a logout link will be generated and saved in the cache - this menu displays fine whenever the user is in the SecurityApp (editing their profile) but we cannot figure out how to get the Applications in the virtual directories to display the same application menu. We have tried: 1) Using JSONP to do an request that will return the html for the menu. The ajax call returns the HTML with the html; however, because User.IsAuthenticated is false the menu comes back empty. 2) We created a user control and include it along with the dll's for the SecurityApp project and this works; however, we dont want to have to include all the dlls for the SecurityApp project in every application that we create (along with all the app settings in the web.config) We would like this to be as simple as possible to implement so that anyone creating a new app can add the menu to their application in as few steps as possible... Any ideas? To Clarify - we are using ASP.NET MVC 1.0 since these apps are in production and we do not have the okay to go to ASP.NET MVC 2.0 (unfortunately)

• Netbean6.8: Cant deploy an app if I have Message Driven Bean

  I create an Enterprise Application CustomerApp that also generated two projects CustomerApp-ejb and CustomerApp-war. But as soon as I create a Message Driven Bean, I cant deploy CustomerApp-war anymore. When I create NotificationBean.java (message driven bean), In the project destination option, I click add, and have NotificationQueue for the Destination Name and Destination Type is Queue. Below are the code package com.customerapp.mdb; import javax.ejb.ActivationConfigProperty; import javax.ejb.MessageDriven; import javax.jms.Message; import javax.jms.MessageListener; @MessageDriven(mappedName = "jms/NotificationQueue", activationConfig = { @ActivationConfigProperty(propertyName = "acknowledgeMode", propertyValue = "Auto-acknowledge"), @ActivationConfigProperty(propertyName = "destinationType", propertyValue = "javax.jms.Queue") }) public class NotificationBean implements MessageListener { public NotificationBean() { } public void onMessage(Message message) { } } If I remove the @MessageDriven annotation, then I can deploy the project. When I just ret without calling exit(), the application does not terminate and needs to be killed. Could anyone shed some light on this? It only happens when I make the call to SDL_SetVideoMode().

• How do I add IIS Virtual Directories and arbitrary files in TFS Solution

  We have a web portal product from which we customize portals from customers. We use the precompiled web app and create a virtual directory (vd) where the customization resides. In addition to this we do some changes web.config in the web app folder. We would obviously like to keep these customizations under TFS source control. When I try to add the precompiled web app (which I don't want to add to source control), a warning tells me that the vds cannot be added. If I only add the folder that is referenced to by the vd, I lose the references to assemblies in the precompiled web app. My questions are: How do I structure a solution for adding IIS (sub application level) virtual directories and still retain the references to assemblies? Is it possible to add other directories/files from the web application level (like App_Theme, web.config etc.) to the solution? Since we already use Visual Source Safe, we have established a tree structure for each customization project: Project Root | |-Custom Sql | |-Custom Portal Files (which is added as a virtual directory) | |-Other Customizations I could probably do a lot of this manually through the source control explorer, but I'd like to have everything done through a solution. I've followed the instructions using this article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb668986.aspx, but this doesn't address the exact problem that I have. Oh, and we are currently using Visual Source Safe for portal customizaton, but are eager to make the move to TFS. TIA

• Nhibernate not tracking changes

  I'm using nhibernate and it appears that changes to my new object are not persisted. After creating and saving an object I then modify it and commit the transaction. However none of the modifications are saved. The strange thing is this code was working previously and I have no idea what could cause this. Nothing was changed that's obviously related.. As an attempted work around I saved the object later in the procedure after all the changes where made however I was greeted with an Assertion Failure collection [] was not processed by flush. • Django 'ImproperlyConfigured' error after deployment on google app engine

  Hello, I'm currently trying to get my first django project running on Google App Engine. I followed the instructions given here http://www.allbuttonspressed.com/projects/djangoappengine as best I could. Unfortunately I have run into some issues. Locally everything runs fine, no problems. I then tried to deploy my project to the cloud. This is where I'm totally stuck. I always receive 500 Server Errors coupled with google.appengine.runtime.DeadlineExceededError's. Every now and then I get the following error message in my logs, which I think is the root of the problem : <class 'django.core.exceptions.ImproperlyConfigured'>: ImportError projectyalanda.pricecompare: No module named projectyalanda.pricecompare Obviously something is wrong in the way I reference my django app. Why this is only an issue in the cloud is a mystery to me. The interesting part in the settings.py file is setup as following: INSTALLED_APPS = ( 'djangotoolbox', # 'django.contrib.auth', 'django.contrib.contenttypes', 'django.contrib.sessions', 'projectyalanda.pricecompare', ) I absolutely can't figure out why django/appengine wouldn't be able to find the module, especially since everything works perfectly locally. So where else can I look? The local folder structure is of course also correct as automatically done by django, so maybe something is messed up during deployment? How would I be able to find out? Please help me ;-) Thanks

• ASP.NET MVC 2 VB, Not recognising my import.

  I had a problem with a project I converted from C# to VB, in that the VB version it cannot seem to find an object even though I declared it with an Import statement at the top. I created a new, default MVC 2 VB project, and the same problem occurs there. I create a new MVC 2 application, I then add a reference to System.Data.Services.Client, and in my Index.aspx, in the Content area, I type <% Dim x As DataServiceQueryContinuation %> which is what I want to use. It gives me a blue squiggly line and says Type 'DataServiceQueryContinuation' is not defined. At the top of the page, I add this: <%@ Import Namespace="System.Data.Services.Client" %> The error persists. My original C# version has no such error. I also get this warning: Warning 2 Namespace or type specified in the Imports 'System.Data.Services.Client' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found. Make sure the namespace or the type is defined and contains at least one public member. Make sure the imported element name doesn't use any aliases. e:\ASPNETDEBUG\MvcApplication1\MvcApplication1\Views\Home\Index.aspx 10 9 MvcApplication1 Examining the DLL using the tool provided shows that it does have a public member. Also when typing the above, System.Data. provides intellisense but there is no 'Services'. Any ideas?
