• How to estimate the thread context switching overhead?

  I am trying to improve the performance of the threaded application with real-time deadlines. It is running on Windows Mobile and written in C / C++. I have a suspicion that high frequency of thread switching might be causing tangible overhead, but can neither prove it or disprove it. As everybody knows, lack of proof is not a proof of opposite :). Thus my question is twofold: If exists at all, where can I find any actual measurements of the cost of switching thread context? Without spending time writing a test application, what are the ways to estimate the thread switching overhead in the existing application? Does anyone know a way to find out the number of context switches (on / off) for a given thread?

• Multiple .NET processes memory footprint

  I am developing an application suite that consists of several applications which user can run as needed (they can run all at the same time, or only several..). My concern is in physical memory footprint of each process, as shown in task manager. I am aware that Framework does memory management behind the curtains in terms that it devotes parts of memory for certain things that are not directly related to my application. The question. Does .NET Framework has some way of minimizing memory footprint of processes it runs when there are several processes running at the same time? (Noobish guess ahead) Like, if System.dll is already loaded by one process, does framework load it for each process, or it has some way of sharing it between processes? I am in no way striving to write as small (resource-wise) apps as possible (if I were, I probably wouldn't be using .NET Framework in the first place), but if there's something I can do something about over-using resources, I'd like to know about it.

• Prototype mouseleave for two connected elements

  I have created a small navigation element that is positioned right on top of another element. It is only shown when a user mousenters/mouseovers the main element. I am having some trouble with the prototype. I would like this small nav element to be hidden when a user mouses out of the main box, but I would also like the small nav element to remain visible if a user mouses out of the main box but mouses into the small nav at the same time.   I'm writing a proxy using .NET and C#. I haven't done much Socket programming, and I am not sure the best way to go about it. What would be the best way to implement this? Should I use Synchronous Sockets, Asynchronous sockets? Please help! It must... Accept Connections from the client on two different ports, and be able to receive data on both ports at the same time. Connect to the server on two different ports, and be able to send data on both ports as the same time. Immediately connect to the server and start forwarding packets as soon as a client connection is made. Forward packets in the same order they were received. Be as low latency as possible. I don't need the ability for multiple clients to connect to the proxy, but it would be a nice feature if its easy to implement.   So there's this new cool thing, these NoSQL-databases. And so there's my data: Rows of rows of rows of meteorological data: Values, representing certain measurements at a certain station (Identified by a WMO number, not coordinates), at a certain time. Not every station measures every parameter, not every parameter is measured all the time. I store this data (30 years worth of hourly values, resulting in ~1 billion values) currently in MySQL. The continous growth and the forseeable addition of even more data give me a little headache. Reading about the document based NoSQL systems which seem to scale rather easily, I was wondering if NoSQL is a viable data storage concept for meteorological data too. Do you have any experience with this?

• Refactor/rewrite code or continue?

  I just completed a complex piece of code. It works to spec, it meets performance requirements etc etc but I feel a bit anxious about it and am considering rewriting and/or refactoring it. Should I do this (spending time that could otherwise be spent on features that users will actually notice)? The reasons I feel anxious about the code are: The class hierarchy is complex and not obvious Some classes don't have a well defined purpose (they do a number of unrelated things) Some classes use others internals (they're declared as friend classes) to bypass the layers of abstraction for performance, but I feel they break encapsulation by doing this Some classes leak implementation details (eg, I changed a map to a hash map earlier and found myself having to modify code in other source files to make the change work) My memory management/pooling system is kinda clunky and less-than transparent They look like excellent reasons to refactor and clean code, aiding future maintenance and extension, but could be quite time consuming. Also, I'll never be perfectly happy with any code I write anyway... So, what does stackoverflow think? Clean code or work on features?

  Hi, I am using Watin mostly to automate thing I do by hand. Sometimes, I need to change proxy. To do this, I have to set up IE to use a local proxy all the time (listens locally and forwards to a remote porxy), and then by hand change the settings of that program each time I need to use another proxy. This is not an elegant solution! It may work, but it is not nice. So, my question is, how do I change programmatically IE settings while using Watin? I code in VB.NET. Thank you

• not getting output from parmiko/ssh command

  I am using paramiko/ssh/python to attempt to run a command on a remote server. When I ssh manually and run the command in question, I get the results I want. But if I use the python (co-opted from another thread on this site) below, there is no returned data. If I modify the command to be something more basic like 'pwd' or 'ls' I can then get the output. Any help is appreciated. • Working Solo On Small Projects: Cowboy Coding The Way To Go?

  I am a big advocate of agile methods when working on teams and/or large projects. However, I find that for smaller projects, when working solo, I usually start the project writing unit tests, documenting extensively, refactoring. As time wears on, I stop because I feel like I'm wasting time. I find that cowboy coding with an agile spin (testing often, writing human readable code) often works extremely well for me on small, solo projects that I don't expect others to have to work with. Do other people share my sentiment? Or do you think that one should never stick to their guns (get it? cowboys)? So the real question: Are there any agile methodologies that are particularly tailored to a solo project? (other than my "agile cowboy" method above)

• IIS errors since upgrading to dot net 4

  Back in October we upgraded one of our sites (on IIS 6) from .net 3.5 to .net 4.0. Since then we have been getting the following warning and error pretty much everyday: Warning: ISAPI 'c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_isapi.dll' reported itself as unhealthy for the following reason: 'Deadlock detected'. Error: It is not possible to run two different versions of ASP.NET in the same IIS process. Please use the IIS Administration Tool to reconfigure your server to run the application in a separate process. We have checked all applications and ensured that they are running on the correct versions of ASP.NET and also in their own separate app pools. We have looked at the IIS logs at the time the errors are recorded but this doesn't give any clues as to the issue. Is there a tool available that could give us more information as as to which application is causing the errors and what was happening at the time?

  I am looking into the iPhone in app purchased models and need to implement a subscription. Ex content will be available for 24 hours. Now the most important thing is that it needs to be available on all the other devices, so bought on the iPhone, viewable on the iPad. I'm not sure how this works ? I need to store some information on the developer server but is this the transaction id and current date/time so when launching the app on the iPad, you will attempt to buy the content again. Apple will see that this user already bought that and hopefully returns the transaction ID. At that moment I can verify if the time limit it still valid or not. Can anyone confirm this method off working? If this is correct is there a 'renew'?

  Hi, I never used Settings class before but I found some articles on CodeProject which I'm currently reading (for example http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/PropertiesSettings.aspx) but so far I didn't see how to save string array for getting it after application is started next time. For example my application has several FileSystemWatcher instances, with each instance several other directories are connected (for example one FSW instance is monitoring one directory for a change and when it happens it copies some file to several other directories), so I would have one string array with watched paths representing FSW instances, and string array for each of those paths, representing directories that are affected. My question is, what should I use (Settings class or something else), and how should I use that for storing application configuration that is variable number of string arrays? Emphasize is on something I could use very soon as I don't have too much time to make custom class (but would have to if I cannot find solution) or dig into some obscure hacks. Any tutorial link, code snippet would be very helpful. Thanks.

  My app is forced to use a 3rd party module which will blue-screen Windows if two instances are started at the same time on the same machine. To work around the issue, my C# app has a mutex: static Mutex mutex = new Mutex(true, "{MyApp_b9d19f99-b83e-4755-9b11-d204dbd6d096}"); And I check if it's present - and if so I show an error message and close the app: bool IsAnotherInstanceRunning() { if (mutex.WaitOne(TimeSpan.Zero, true)) return (true); else return (false); } The problem is if two users can log in and open the application at the same time, and IsAnotherInstanceRunning() will return false. How do I get around this?

connect its says's: Connection failed: Retry When i use Remote process as:10.32.222.111:4447 on the sever it prompts a warning : 16:29:48,084 ERROR [org.jboss.remoting.remote.connection] (Remoting "djd7w4r1" read-1) JBREM000200: Remote connection failed: java.io.IOException: Received an invali d message length of -2140864253 Also disabled Remote authentication: -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.ssl=false -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.authenticate=false -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=12345 Still not able to connect. • iOS4.2: TouchBegan does not draw more then one circle per sensed touch

  Hi all, quick question (which might be a no-brainer for most here) :) My code below should draw a circle for every time touch that is recognised but although more than ones touches are sensed only one circle will drawn up at a time. Can anyone see any obvious issues? This method sits in the XYZViewControler.m class. TouchPoint.m is the class that defines the circle. Thanks a bundle for your help and redirects.
