  I have a .net component that will be called by unmanaged code. I want to create an installer for the .net component that will in one step.. -install it to the desired directory -generate the tlb file -run the regasm command The deployers of this component dont have knowledge of the .net framework. • Apache mpm-itk Performance

  I manage a bunch of VPSs with memory ranging from 1GB to 8GB. Most of these websites are Joomla websites, and the servers must support multiple sites/users/S-FTP. I use mpm-itk almost exclusively (mostly due to it's convenience in these shared environments). However, I'm aware it isn't known for performance, so I need some advice on making it faster. Due to the lack of documentation when I first went the way of mpm-itk, I included only one setting in the config, and that was to limit each user to 50 clients (the rest I left up to defaults): <IfModule mpm_itk_module> MaxClientsVHost 50 </IfModule> Are there any better alternatives available? Are there any settings supported in mpm-prefork or mpm-worker that are also supported in mpm-itk? Thanks!

• Rewrite query string "?x=y" style to "/x/y" style

  I have a PHP MVC framework I've built from scratch which uses the traditional domain.com/controller/action URL routing. While I'm currently handling the below conversion in the router I'd like to replace them in the URL for cosmetic reasons. For example: controller/action?filter=bank Becomes: controller/action/filter/bank I've done a bit of experimentation with a regex but can't seem to find a match. I'm also not sure how to rewrite it using RewriteCond. Thanks in advance.

• How to speed up apache

  We have a server with 8Cores, 16GB of RAM and RAID 0 SAS 10K drives. Our goal is to use this to serve a fairly simple php application quickly. We have tested all other components and we think we have narrowed it down to apache is our bottleneck. I am no apache guru I have done some research and tested a couple things but when i test with JMeter launching 100 concurrent connections against the server the first 10 - 20 come back quickly 30 - 100ms but the rest take between 1000ms to 3000ms. Anyone have any ideas on what to change in our apache config to make this faster right now its a vanilla install of apache.

• Learning JavaScript... Should I skip straight to the good stuff (the frameworks)?

  I learnt HTML/CSS a good few years back, then PHP a little later. I've recently become interesting in web development again, just started playing with frameworks like Django and RoR. I'm curious as to how much time/effort I should spend learning straight JS before looking at frameworks. I've been reading through a let of articles called Mastering AJAX by Brett McLaughlin which seems quite good, but I'm seeing a lot of stuff (such as cross browser compatibility - even for things like XMLHttpRequest) coming up which look like they would be non-issues if using a framework. So, should I keep reading through these articles and try to build stuff using basic JS, or should I just start looking into jQuery and the like? Also, I've been watching a few videos regarding GWT from Google I/O. I've been learning Java over the last year, built a few medium sized apps in it. I'm wondering if GWT is something that's worth going straight to, along with gQuery?

• Linksys router with multiple external IP's

  In an office I've got a network connection with 5 external IPs and a Linksys router (I'm not 100% percent sure of the model). I need 4 of those 5 IPs to be routed to a server, and the fifth to be shared between the other computers at the office. This can probably be done using a switch in front of the router. Connect the server and the router to the switch, and let the router handle the rest of the network. Is there a way to configure the router to route the 4 IPs to the server, and create an internal network the the other computers at the same time?

• Are there Python ORMs out there that support multiple independent databases concurrently in use?

  I'm writing an application in Python where I wish to use sqlite as the backing store for documents edited by the app, with documents generally living in memory, but being saved to disk-based databases when the application saves. Ideally I'd like to use something like an ORM to make access to the data from my Python application code simple. Unfortunately it seems like the majority of Python ORMs, including SQLAlchemy, SQLObject, Django, and Storm, associate the database connection (or engine or whatever) with the classes representing table data, rather than instances of those classes. This restricts these ORMs to working with a single database connection across all instances. Since I'd like to support having multiple documents open simultaneously, this isn't going to work for me. Are there any ORMs out there that support this usage model in Python? Bazaar seems to support this, but it's quite out of date, and at first glance appears to have some other shortcomings. • Storing year/make/model in a database?

  Here's what I'm thinking (excuse the Django format): class VehicleMake(Model): name = CharField(max_length=50) class VehicleModel(Model): make = ForeignKey(VehicleMake) name = CharField(max_length=50) class VehicleYear(Model): model = ForeignKey(VehicleModel) year = PositiveIntegerField() This is going to be used in those contingent drop-down select boxes, which would visually be laid out like [- Year -][- Make -][- Model -]. So, to query the data I need I would first have to select all distinct years from the years table, sorted descending. Then I'd find all the vehicle makes that have produced a model in that year. And then all the models by that make in that year. Is this a good way to do it, or should I re-arrange the foreign keys somehow? Or use a many-to-many table for the years/models so that no year is repeated?

• Parallel installation of Office 2003 and Outlook 2010

  we have a customer who is not willing to move from Office 2003 to Office 2010 but he now wants to use Office 365. As you know is Office 365 not compatible with Outlook 2003. Now he asked me if it's possible to buy and install Outlook 2010 and keep the rest as it is. I only found some guides for parallel installation of Office 2007 and Office 2010. So my question is if this solution will work. Or are there any issues known?

  Is it possible to retrieve data from the entire surface of a compact disc. Suppose a CD written with 300MB of data where the remaining 400MB is blank. Normally, computer doesn't bother with the 400MB region when reading it because the filesystem ends at 300MB. But, is it possible to make the CD drive retrieve data from the rest of the surface. Idea is to retrieve something from outside the image. If possible, true it might return useless 0s or 255s data. But, is it really possible?

• .NET unit test runner outputting FaultException.Detail

  Hello, I am running some unit tests on a WCF service. The service is configured to include exception details in the fault response (with the following in my service configuration file). <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true" /> If a test causes an unhandled exception on the server the fault is received by the client with a fully populated server stack trace. I can see this by calling the exception's ToString() method. The problem is that this doesn't seem to be output by any of the test runners that I have tried (xUnit, Gallio, MSTest). They appear to just output the Message and the StackTrace properties of the exception. To illustrate what I mean, the following unit test run by MSTest would output three sections: Error Message Error Stack Trace Standard Console Output (contains the information I would like, e.g. "Fault Detail is equal to An ExceptionDetail, likely created by IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults=true, whose value is: ..." try { service.CallMethodWhichCausesException(); } catch (Exception ex) { Console.WriteLine(ex); // this outputs the information I would like throw; } Having this information will make the initial phase of testing and deployment a lot less painful. I know I can just wrap each unit test in a generic exception handler and write the exception to the console and rethrow (as above) within all my unit tests but that seems a very long-winded way of achieving this (and would look pretty awful). Does anyone know if there's any way to get this information included for free whenever an unhandled exception occurs? Is there a setting that I am missing? Is my service configuration lacking in proper fault handling? Perhaps I could write some kind of plug-in / adapter for some unit testing framework? Perhaps theres a different unit testing framework which I should be using instead! My actual set-up is xUnit unit tests executed via Gallio for the development environment, but I do have a separate suite of "smoke tests" written which I would like to be able to have our engineers run via the xUnit GUI test runner (or Gallio or whatever) to simplify the final deployment. • Spawned Process Terminated in GP Startup Script

  I have a Group Policy Startup Script which runs synchronously. I now need this script to run one process asynchronously. So far I have managed to get the spawned process running via the command below, however once the rest of the script finishes and the GP Startup Script "phase" finishes and the logon prompt is shown, my spawned process is terminated. Is there any way to have this process continue beyond the Startup Script phase? cmd /c start spawned.bat I guess the reason why it terminates is because the process was launched by the Startup Script process and when the parent process terminates so do its children. PS I need it to be launched via the exisitng script.
