ISVs who are Oracle Partner Network Gold members with a specialization in the Solaris knowledge zone can apply for free access in OPN. • problems with installation of ubuntu 12.04 (64 and 32 bits)

  I am a latinoamerican so.. sorry for my english I am trying to install ubuntu on my new pc but I have serious problems. When I put the installation cd and it runs, everything goes fine until that "window" when the user have to decide if want to try ubuntu or install it on the machine.. well that "window" apears in blank, and I see that my mouse and my keyboard turn really slowly and I can't do anything I have to shut it down by pressing power botton. The specification of my pc are this Gigabyte ex58 ud7 i7 950 wester digital caviar black 6gb memory corsair evga gtx580 Please i really neeed to install ubuntu or another linux distrubution, i am usign de sismic unix program on my laptop and well. it burns when i program a script! help! please :) what can i do..? what i have to download? i am not a pro in linux so please :( be pattient with me when it starts to load the achieve ubuntu environment to enter a menu with a graphical environment but I managed to get something sturdy and gave him to try ubuntu, started to load but freezes on the sign of ubuntu with red spots and only shows me the pointer not more ..... any other option? ps: had previously tried to install the alternate version of ubuntu not having success: S

• computer shows up twice, connection unknown

  added two computers to Ubuntu One. One machine is windows. The windows version seems to work fine, and I started syncing a folder by placing it into the Ubuntu One folder. All files and folders are visible when I go to my account online. On Ubuntu machine. I selected to sync the Download folder. Shortly thereafter, I realized that one folder exceeded my storage max. I tried to un-sync the folder, but Ubuntu One and the Stop Syncing This Folder were not visible in the menu. Per Ubuntu instructions, I removed my Ubuntu computer from the list of syncing computers. Per Ubuntu instructions, I re-added the Ubuntu computer. However, I find that two computers by the same name are added on both the desktop app and on the web. Plus, I the connection is "unknown." I have removed and re-added the computer several times with the same results. In all cases, I remove the computers using the Ubuntu One desktop app, then removing them from my account on the web, removing the Ubuntu One password, and restart the Ubuntu One app. Problem remains. Thanks in advance for any replies and help.

  If you have not seen the Visual Studio 2010 Architectural Guidance from the Visual Studio ALM Rangers then you are missing out. I have been spelunking the TFS Guidance recently and I discovered the Visual Studio 2010 Architectural Guidance. This is not an in-depth look at the capabilities of the architectural tools that shipped with Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, but is instead a set of samples that lead you by example through real world scenarios. There is practical guidance and checklists to help guide lead developers and architects through the common challenges in understanding both existing and new applications. The content concentrates on practical guidance for Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and is focused on modelling tools. There is integration into Visual Studio so all you need to do to access it is select “Architecture | Visual Studio ALM Rangers – Architecture Guidance”. Figure: Accessing the Architecture guidance is easy This brings up an inline version of the documentation and a kind of Explorer that lets you pick the tasks you want to perform and takes you strait to that part of the Guidance. • Problem installing drivers for Brother DCP-1400

  I have a problem installing drivers for my DCP-1400 printer. I am using Ubuntu 11.10 and am new to Ubuntu and Linux in general. I downloaded the lpr and cupswrapper files from the Brother linux site into my Download directory. I next run Terminal and switch to the Downloads directory. At the prompt I type in the following: sudo dpkg -i --force-all dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.386.deb It asks for my password which I type in and press Enter. I get the following errors: (Reading database ... 155195 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace dcp1400lpr 1.1.2-1 (using dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.i386.deb) ... • Announcing Oracle Database Mobile Server 11gR2

  I'm pleased to announce that Oracle Database Mobile Server 11gR2 has been released. It's available now for download by existing customers, or anyone who wants to try it out. New features include: Support for J2ME platforms, specifically CDC platforms including OJEC(this is in addition to our existing support for Java SE and SE Embedded) Per-application integration with Berkeley DB on Android Server-side support for Apache TomEE platform Adding support for Oracle Java Micro Edition Embedded Client (OJEC for short) is an important milestone for us; it enables Database Mobile Server to work with any of the incredibly wide array of devices that run J2ME. In particular, it enables management of  networks of embedded devices, AKA machine to machine (M2M) networks. As these types of networks become more common in areas like healthcare, automotive, and manufacturing, we're seeing demand for Database Mobile Server from new and different areas. This is in addition to our existing array of mobile device use cases. The Android integration feature with Berkeley DB represents the completion of phase I of our Android support plan, we now offer a full set of sync, device and app management features for that platform. Going forward, we plan to continue the dual-focus approach, supporting mobile platforms such as Android, and iOS (hint) on the one hand, and networks of embedded M2M devices on the other. In either case, Database Mobile Server continues to be the best way to connect data-driven applications to an Oracle backend.

• Code &amp; Slides &ndash; SDE &ndash; What&rsquo;s new in Silverlight 4

  Last Tuesday the Software Developers Network – SDN organized another SDE. I’ve had the opportunity to present a session about Silverlight 4. I talked about lots of new features in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4, focused on the Out-Of-Browser features.     The slides of my presentation can be downloaded here.   In my presentation I demonstrated a couple of features from my new pet project “SilverAmp”. This project is based on the legendary WinAmp, but made entirely in Silverlight. I use it to try out many new Silverlight 4 features. It’s not finished yet, but useful already. It runs outside the browser with elevated trust. It reads your local MyMusic folder and uses the TagLib library to read the ID3 tags of the mp3s it finds. SilverAmp is using MEF for extensibility. It uses a custom Window Chrome, designed in Expression Design. And it shows a notification window when a new song starts to play.   In the future it is going to get song information from Last.FM, will be able to show YouTube videos inside itself and it will tweet about what you are playing. I might not have access to the web GUI or need to test a service running as a specific user. In the past I had created a number of "one off" programs that submitted specific services, e.g GET_SEARCH_RESULTS, DOCINFO, etc. Recently I decided to create a generic RIDC test program that could submit any service with the desired parameters based on a configuration file. The programs gets the following information from the configuration file: WCC connection information (host, port) User to use to run service Service to run Any parameters for the service The program will make a connection to the WCC server, send the service request, and print the results of the service call using the getResponseAsString() method. Here is a sample configuration file: ridc.host=localhostridc.port=4444ridc.user=sysadminridc.idcservice=GET_SEARCH_RESULTSidcservice.QueryText=dDocType <matches> `Document`idcservice.SortField=dDocNameidcservice.SortDesc=ASC There is a readme file included in the zip with instructions for how to configure and run the program. The program takes one command line argument, the configuration file name. The configuration file name is optional and defaults to config.properties. If you have any suggestions for improvements let me know. Right now it only submits a single service call each time you run it. One enhancement I have already thought about would be to allow you to specify multiple services to tun in the configuration file. You can do that with the current program by having multiple configuration files and running the program multiple times, each with a different configuration file. You can download the program here.

• Ubuntu 12.04.3 64 bit with Nemo 2.0.x no thumbnails

  I have strange problem with thumbnails in my Ubuntu machine. I was using Ubuntu with Cinnamon 1.8 from stable ppa and it was good but then Cinnamon 2.0 came out with some broken packages uploaded to stable ppa nad things gone wrong... Anyway after few updates Cinnamon started to work normaly except Nemo - there are no thumbnails at all, only icons. I heve tried purging /.cache/thumbnails and .thumbnails folders but this doesn't work. Next I have changed permissions for those folders - that didn't helped either. Then I've set Nemo as default file manager and desktop handler but with no result. What is weird - when I start Nautilus and open some folder with images then close it and open same folder with Nemo thumbnails appears but when I clean thumbnails directories there are no thumbnails again. It would be great if someone have some solution for this annoying Nemo behavior because I really don't want to resign from Cinnamon. p.s. I have set preview options in Nemo for Always and no bigger files than 4GB so that is not the case.

• Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools Screencast

  Microsoft just released the Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools extension and it is awesome. A summary of all the features can be found here and it is available in the Visual Studio Gallery here. There are a bunch of great features but, in my opinion, the best one is the replacement for the Add Reference dialog. This gives sub-string search capabilities as well as the ability to add multiple references without having to continually re-open the dialog. For this feature alone, you should install the Pro Power Tools right now. There are a few blogs posts that do a good job describing all the features but what I wanted to do here was to post a quick screencast (7 minutes) that shows the features that I think are really cool. I show most (but not all) of the features focusing on the ones I think are the best.   Java.net, the home of  Java community projects, has been re-launched with a new look and new tools for developers.  The move from CollabNet to the Kenai infrastructure offers more flexibility for developers who want to host or contribute to community projects.  Instead of the large, fixed infrastructure per project (for example, several mailing lists per project), Kenai's ala carte features allow users to take only what they need. "We will continue to have the great mix of blogs, forums, and editorial content as well as new tools on the project side, including Mercurial, Git, and JIRA for developers," Java.net Community Manager Sonya Barry explains.  The migration was huge effort. Over 1400 projects were migrated (and some 30 projects are left to go). A large part of the migration was a big cleanup of abandoned projects. With the high abandonment rate of open source projects, the was a lot to remove. The new java.net site is smaller, faster and now the percentage of good, current content is much higher. • How do I install iTunes?

  I have an iPhone and run Ubuntu on all of my personal computers. Since I did not want to keep a separate partition with Windows on it for the sole purpose of running iTunes, I attempted to install It using Wine. I installed Wine 1.4 from the Software Center and installed iTunes 10.6.3. When I tried to run it I got a slew of error messages. I hopped over to google where it was suggested that I install it through PlayOnLinux. I did so with the same result. Further googling revealed that iTunes 10.6.x is confirmed to work with Wine 1.5.1 and up. I installed Wine 1.5.1 following the instructions I found and was unable to get it to open. I did the same with 1.5.9 with the same results. I opened the Package Manager and installed the Wine 1.5.9 packages through it, and it appears to have installed properly. When trying to install iTunes I got he error "This iTunes installer requires Windows Vista 64 bit or later". Realizing that Wine uses XP as a default I ran winecfg and changed it to Windows 7. This changed nothing and I tried changing it through winetricks to no avail. I even changed it to Vista with the same results. Does anyone know what is going wrong here and how to fix it? Thanks
