• Right edge border unpainted & theme drawing on non client area

  Basically, the problem concerns border flickering during window resizing on Windows. My first goal was to repositioning controls on a dialog during resizing of it. I think I got a good dynamic repositioning without almost any flickering during this operation, but here I'm talking about main window border flickering. However, I wasn't able to eliminate it at all. To simplify the example try to create a simple win32 app with default code VS provided. I'm testing it on Window 7(64bit) with the default theme (Windows 7 basic, no transparency) and VS2008. 1) Do not add code to the app. 2) run it in debug mode. 3) Drag the left edge of the window slowly toward the left of the screen and at the same time keep an eye on the right edge border of the window. You should see a redrawing taking in action. 4) Repeat step 3 moving rapidly the mouse, you should see the flickering on the right edge more clearly. If you invert the edge, that is moving the right edge of the window, then the left edge stay firmly there without unpainted regions. The same process happens for the top edge border vs. the bottom one. Now, enable he Classic Theme (that similar to Win2000) and repeat again the steps above. The right edge is perfectly there without flickering at all! If you keep an eye in the Output Window of Visual Studio when you run in debug mode you should see a list of dll loaded together with your exe. If you run in debug mode with the default theme you will see uxtheme.dll loaded. On the contrary, with classic theme enabled the uxtheme.dll is not loaded (dwmapi.dll is always loaded). Probably uxtheme.dll is loaded at runtime, based on desktop settings and it takes in action for redrawing your windows non-client area. Another trick you could use to see the effect of this flickering is to add a case for WM_NCPAINT and return 0 instead to call the DefWindowProc(). Repeating the steps above and moving fast you should see a big part of the right edge of the window completely erased by background windows. This doesn't happen for the top and bottom ones. Any idea to resolve this flickering? Thank you!

• Multiple views and source list in a Core Data app

  I'm working on my first major Cocoa app for an undergraduate research project. The application is document-based and uses Core Data. One of the entities is an abstract entity, Page. Page is parent of several types of pages: ie PageWithHeaderAndFooter, PageWithTwoColumns, BasicPage etc. Page has attributes, such as title and author, that all pages have in common. Each specific type of page has a certain number of layout blocks (PageWithHeaderAndFooter has three: header, footer, body. BasicPage has one: body. etc.) Additionally, all Page subclasses define layout-specific implementations of certain methods. The other relevant entity is Style, which defines the visual look of a Page. (Think of Pages as HTML and Style as CSS.) I would like my app to have an iTunes/Mail-like source list with sections. (One section would be Pages, the other would be Styles.) I have a pretty good idea how to do the sectioned source list (this was a great help). However, after hours of headbanging and fruitless googling, here's what I can't figure out: Pages and Styles listed in the source list, and when you select one of them, all of the relevant fields for that object appear at the right (mostly NSTextViews, pop up menus, etc). I laid that out and did all of the bindings in Interface Builder. The problem is, if my source list contains different types of pages, how do I get a different view to display at the right depending on the type of page selected? For example, if a BasicPage is selected, I want just what you see above: the general page stuff and one NSTextView that corresponds to the one field body of BasicPage. But if I select a PageWithHeaderAndFooter, I want to display the general page stuff plus three NSTextViews (one for header, body, and footer.) If I have a Style selected, I want to display various pop up menus, color wells, etc. For the pages at least, we're only talking about one or more NSTextViews, each of which corresponds to a String attribute of the respective entity. How would you do this? Thank you for your help!

• Creating same-width hit-zones on MenuItems in ASP.NET 2.0 Menus that include MenuItems added at runt

  In an ASP.NET 2.0 application, I want to permit a user to select a MenuItem, even if the user does not click the actual text of the MenuItem, but instead only clicks the highlight area that ASP.NET places around the currently selected MenuItem (represented by the DynamicHoverStyle.BackColor property). Since the BackColor is displayed the same width for each MenuItem in a submenu, based on MenuItem with the longest text, I would like to make the hit-zone (clickable area) of each sub-MenuItem the same width (same at the BackColor area), regardless of how much text is displayed in the in each individual sub-MenuItem. Here's the setup. I am using a Menu on a MasterPage to display a similar menu on each of my pages. Some of the pages suppress this menu, and some of them add addition MenuItems, sometimes to the top level, sometimes adding sub-MenuItems to an existing top-level MenuItem, and sometimes both (adding a MenuItem to the top level and then additional MenuItems as submenuitems to that newly added top level. This menu has a horizontal orientation, and it is dynamic, in that only the top level is initially exposed, and the submenus are displayed when selected. During usability testing, we noticed that users would select a top-level menu item to expose the submenu, and then select a submenu item, but not by necessarily clicking on the submenu item text, but instead clicking on the BackColor area of the submenu item. Since the text of some MenuItems are longer than others, MenuItems with short Text have a rather large BackColor area. When the user clicks on the BackColor area, but not directly on the MenuItem Text, nothing happens, since the user didn't actually click on the submenu item hit zone. Although there are visual cues as to what part of the displayed MenuItem is clickable (the mouse pointer changes to a link cursor when the mouse is positioned on the MenuItem Text, but not when it is only hovering over the BackColor), this behavior confused the users. They highlighted a MenuItem, and clicked it, but nothing happened. I would to make clicking a MenuItem successful, even if the user did not click on the actual Text of the MenuItem, but simply click on the BackColor area. It seems like there should be a property somewhere to control the width of the active area of the displayed MenuItems, but I do not see it. Any suggestions, given that I am creating some of these MenuItems at runtime?

• Revision control for writing programming lessons

  I'd like to write a series programming lessons that guide programmers to build a certain kind of program. After each lesson, I'd like to provide sample code that implements what that lesson covered, and the next lesson would use that code as a starting point. Right now I'm using Git to keep track of the code from lesson to lesson. Each lesson has its own branch. lesson1: A--B--C \ lesson2: D--E--F \ lesson3: G--H--I However, suppose that now I want to make it easier on the Windows programmers using my lessons, so I add a Visual Studio project to lesson 1 and then merge it into lessons 2 and 3. lesson1: A--B--C--------------J \ \ lesson2: D--E--F--------K \ \ lesson3: G--H--I--L And then someone points out a bug in lesson 2 that causes crashes on certain systems. (This diagram is where I am right now, and I'm having doubts about continuing along this path.) lesson1: A--B--C--------------J \ \ lesson2: D--E--F--------K--M \ \ \ lesson3: G--H--I--L--N Here are the problems I imagine having: If I had many lessons, and I fix something in lesson 1, am I going to have to spend fifteen minutes or more just merging that one simple change? I know I'll probably have to test all of those lessons again, but I can put that off. When I make a bunch of changes to various lessons on one computer, how do I pull all of the branches at the same time? If I decide to publish these lessons, I'd like a way to tag all of the branches to correspond with what I publish. I figure I'll just need to tag each branch separately, but it would be nice if there were a better way. When I look at the history, I imagine becoming terribly confused about what I've done. Compare the above diagram to a hypothetical diagram below, where I use rebase instead of merge (and rebase has its own problems): lesson1: A--B--C--J \ lesson2: D2--E2--F2--M \ lesson3: G2--H2--I2 Do any of you have experience working with a project like this? Should I consider using a different VCS, such as Darcs? (Note: it would be a real pain to use centralized VCS, so don't suggest one of those unless the benefits are clear.) Should I consider writing plugins or extra tools for a VCS (such as a "meta tag" which tags several branches)?

• .NET Application broken on one PC, unhandleable exception

  Hello people. I have a .NET 2.0 application with nothing fancy in it. It worked until yesterday on every PC I installed or copied it to, no matter if 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 or 3.5 SP1 was installed, no matter if it was Win2000, XP or even Win7 (in total 100+ machines). Yesterday I did my normal installation procedure and wanted to start it one time to check if everything is working...and it wasn't. The program crashed hard leaving me with the uninformative "Do you wanna report this error?" dialog. The problem is an exception in the Main(String[] args) routine of my application. Edit: I'm using Visual Studio 2008 Prof.. Crash happens in Release- and Debug-Build on the client machine. Debugging the application directly on this machine is out of question I fear, 300+ Miles and they only have two computers to work with.

• How can I call VC# webservice methods without ArgumentException?

  Currently, I'm trying to write a small tray application that will show the status and provide control of a server-side application exposed over webservice. The webservice only has 3 operations: start, stop and status. When I call any of these operations in code, they throw an ArgumentException citing "An item with the same key has already been added".   Is there a way to handle the dynamic change of a dropdown for a single row in a grid-based datawindow? Example: NAME LIKABILITY PURCHASED IN COLOUR (Text) (DropDown*) (Text) (Text) Bananas [Good] Hands Yellow [Bad] [Bananas are good] Apples [Good] Bags Red [Bad] Given the above is a grid-based datawindow, where the fields 'NAME','PURCHASED IN' and 'COLOUR' are text fields, where as the 'LIKABILITY' field is a dropdown*. I say dropdown* because the same visual representation can be created by using a DropDownList (hardcoded within the datawindow element at design time), or a DropDownDW (or DDDW, a select statement that can be based on other elements in the datawindow). However, there is no way I can get 'Bananas' having it's 3 dropdowns, while Apples has only 2. If I enter multiple rows of 'Bananas', then all rows have 3 dropdowns, but as soon as I add an Apples row, all dropdowns revert to 2 selections. To attempt to achieve this functionality, I have tried the following options: -- 1) dw_1.Object.likability.values("Good~tG/Bad~tB/Bananas are good~tDRWHO") on ue_itemchange when editing NAME. FAILS: edits all instances of LIKABILITY instead of the current row. -- 2) Duplicate Dropdowns, having one filtered, one unfiltered selection list per row, visible based on NAME selection. FAILS: can't set visibility/overlapping columns on grid-based datawindow. (Source) -- 3) Hard-code display value as Database value, or Vice Versa. Have 'GOOD','BAD','BANANASAREGOOD' as the display and database values, and change handling of options from G, B, DRWHO to these new values. FAILS: 3rd option appears for all rows, still selectable on Apple rows, which is wrong. -- 4) DDDW retrieve list of options for dropdown. Create a DDDW that uses the value of NAME to determine what selections it should have for the dropdown. FAILS: edits all instances of the dropdown, not just the current row. -- 5) DDDW retrieve counter of options available (if B then 3 else 2), then have duplicate dropdown columns that protect/unprotect based on DDDW counter. FAILS: Can't autoselect dddw value to populate column to cause protect on other two columns, ugly solution in any case. -- There is now a bounty on this question for anyone who can give me a solution that will enable me to edit a dropdown column for a single row on a grid-based datawindow in PB 10.5

• SharePoint 2010 Custom WCF Service - Windows and FBA Authentication

  I have SharePoint 2010 configured for Claims Based Authentication with both Windows and Forms Based Authentication (FBA) for external users. I also need to develop custom WCF Services. The issue is that I want Windows credentials passed into the WCF Service(s); however, I cannot seem to get the Windows credentials passed into the services. My custom WCF service appears to be using Anonymous authentication (which has to be enabled in IIS in order to display the FBA login screen). The example I have tried to follow is found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff521581.aspx. The WCF service gets deployed to _vti_bin (ISAPI folder).   I'm doing "Multidimensional Project" with MS SQL Server 2012 (Server Data Tools - Visual Studio 2010 Shell). I can't run (debug) it. If the data source's impersonation information is set to "use the service account", this error occures: Error 2 Internal error: The operation terminated unsuccessfully. 0 0 Error 3 OLE DB error: OLE DB or ODBC error: Login failed for user 'NT Service\MSSQLServerOLAPService'.; 28000. 0 0 Error 4 Errors in the high-level relational engine. A connection could not be made to the data source with the DataSourceID of 'Data Warehouse', Name of 'Data Warehouse'. 0 0 Error 5 Errors in the OLAP storage engine: An error occurred while the dimension, with the ID of 'Items', Name of 'Items' was being processed. 0 0 Error 6 Errors in the OLAP storage engine: An error occurred while the 'Id' attribute of the 'Items' dimension from the 'Warehouse_MultidimensionalProject_Cube' database was being processed. 0 0 Error 7 Server: The current operation was cancelled because another operation in the transaction failed. 0 0 I guessed that this account has no premissions but (1) I coudn't even add this account (it seems that it doesn't exist) and (2) how is that even possible for it to not have built-it poremissions? When I'm setting impersonation to "use the credentials of current user" (which is the owner of the data source, btw.), another error occures: Error 2 Internal error: The operation terminated unsuccessfully. 0 0 Error 3 The datasource, 'Data Warehouse', contains an ImpersonationMode that is not supported for processing operations. 0 0 Error 4 Errors in the high-level relational engine. • Why won't this hit test fire a second time? wpf

  All, I have a main window that contains two custom objects (AnimatedCharacter). These objects are nothing but images. These images might contain transparent portions. One of these objects slightly overlaps the other object. • Debugging site written mainly in JScript with AJAX code injection

  Hello, I have a legacy code to maintain and while trying to understand the logic behind the code, I have run into lots of annoying issues. The application is written mainly in Java Script, with extensive usage of jQuery + different plugins, especially Accordion. It creates a wizard-like flow, where client code for the next step is downloaded in the background by injecting a result of a remote AJAX request. It also uses callbacks a lot and pretty complicated "by convention" programming style (lots of events handlers are created on the fly based on certain object names - e.g. current page name, current step name). Adding to that, the code is very messy and there is no obvious inner structure - the functions are scattered in the code, file names do not reflect the business role of the code, lots of functions and code snippets are most likely not used at all etc. PROBLEM: How to approach this code base, so that the inner flow of the code can be sort-of "reverse engineered" using a suite of smart debugging tools. Ideally, I would like to be able to attach to the running application and step through the code, breaking on each new function call. Also, it would be nice to be able to create a "diagram of calls" in the application (i.e. in order to run a particular page logic, this particular flow of function calls was executed in a particular order). Not to mention to be able to run a coverage analysis, identifying potentially orphaned code fragments. I would like to stress out once more, that it is impossible to understand the inner logic of the application just by looking at the code itself, unless you have LOTS of spare time and beer crates, which I unfortunately do not have :/ (shame...) An IDE of some sort that would aid in extending that code would be also great, but I am currently looking into possibility to use Visual Studio 2010 to do the job, as the site itself is a mix of Classic ASP and ASP.NET (I'd say - 70% Java Script with jQuery, 30% ASP). I have obviously tried FireBug, but I was unable to find a way to define a breakpoint or step into the code, which is "injected" into the client JS using AJAX calls (i.e. the application retrieves the code by invoking an URL and injects it to the client local code). Venkman debugger had similar issues. Any hints would be welcome. Feel free to ask additional questions.

• Referencing both an old version and new version of the same DLL (VB.Net)

  Consider the following situation: WidgetCompany produced a .NET DLL in 2006 called Widget.dll, version 1.0. I consumed this Widget.dll file throughout my VB.Net application. Over time, WidgetCompany has been updating Widget.dll, I never bothered to keep up, continuing to ship version 1.0 of Widget.dll with my software. It's now 2010, my project is now a VB.Net 3.5 application and WidgetCompany has come out with Widget.dll version 3.0. It looks and functions almost identical to Widget.dll version 1.0, using all the same namespaces and type names from before. However, Widget.dll version 3.0 has many run-time breaking changes since 1.0 and I cannot simply cut over to the new version; however, I don't want to continue developing against the 1.0 version and therefore keep digging myself deeper in the hole. What I want to do is do all new development in my project with Widget.dll version 3.0, whilst keeping Widget.dll version 1.0 around until I find time to convert all of my 1.0 consumption to the newer 3.0 code. Now, for starters, I obviously cannot simply reference both Widget.dll (Ver 1.0) and Widget.dll (Ver 3.0) in Visual Studio. Doing so gives me the following message: "A reference to 'Widget.dll' could not be added. A reference to the component 'Widget' already exists in the project." To work around that, I can simply rename version 3.0 Widget.dll to Widget.3.dll. But this is where I'm stuck. Any attempts to reference types found in "the dll" leads to ambiguity and the compiler obviously doesn't have any clue as to what I really want in this or that case. Is there something I can do that gives a DLL a new "root" Namespace or something? For example, if I could say "Widget.dll has a new root namespace of Legacy" then I could update existing code to reference the types found in Legacy.<RootNamespace> namespace while all new code could simply reference types from the <RootNamespace> namespace. Pipe dream or reality? Are there other solutions to situations this (besides "don't get in this situation in the first place")?

When I put a break on the error portion of the code above in firebug this is information I am getting in the image linked below. link text I am getting what appears to be a 404 error, but when I look on the server all of the files are in the right place... coupled with the fact that it works when in debug mode, I think I am slowly going crazy staring at these same lines of code trying to find the needle in the haystack. Any help or just a direction to look in would be greatly appreciated.

  I've been working on a computational physics project (plotting related rates of chemical reactants with respect to eachother to show oscillatory behavior) with a fair amount of success. However, one of my simulations involves more than two active oscillating agents (five, in fact) which would obviously be unsuitable for any single visual plot... My scheme was hence to have the user select which two reactants they wanted plotted on the x-axis and y-axis respectively. I tried (foolishly) to convert string input values into the respective variable names, but I guess I need a radically different approach if any exist? • Last Grid Column Not Auto Resizing With Grid

  I'm having a problem with my TextBoxs not "Auto" resizing. I'm trying to create a form that behaves and looks like the Properties Editor in Visual Studio. What appears to be happening is that the third column is not expanding to fill all of the available remaining space in the grid. Image below is how my form looks on startup. The width of the textboxs is determined by the MinWidth setting on the third ColumnDefinition statement. Also, the Width is set to "*". • Dependency property does not work within a geometry in a controltemplate

  I have a DepencencyProperty (a boolean) that works fine on an Ellipse, but not on an ArcSegment. Am I doing something that is not possible? Here's part of the xaml. Both the TemplateBindings of Origin and LargeArc do not work in the geometry. • How can I fix this NavigationController and UIToolbar offset issue in Objective-C?

  I'm adding a couple of buttons to an already-existing NavigationController. The two buttons are added to a UIView, which is pushed onto the NavigationItem. The buttons stop and reload a UIWebView. Problem is that there's a slight offset issue that is making it all look pretty ugly. I wish I could set the UIToolbar to transparent or clear background but that doesn't seem to be an option. Can't seem to use negative offsets either. I've got color matching, but if you look closely there's 1px or 2px of highlighting up top that's causing a visual mismatch and then a slight offset at the bottom. Some relevant code below (based on this, inbound Googlers). • ServiceController.Stop() doesn't appear to be stopping anything

  My dev box is a Windows 7 (x64) machine. I've got some code (C#, .net 2.0) that in certain circumstances, checks to see if a service is running and then stops it. ServiceController matchedService = //My Service! //If statements and such matchedService.Stop(); matchedService.WaitForStatus(ServiceControllerStatus.Stopped); Now, I can verify MyService is in fact installed and running. I can tell you I am running Visual Studio 2008 as an administrator while debugging. I can also verify that after a couple of If statements, I wind up at the .Stop() and .WaitForStatus() portion of the programming. I do know that if step over the .Stop() call, the service itself just keeps running (looking at it in Services, though it occurs to me perhaps I should grab a better tool for this. I'm sure there's some sysinternals tool that might give me more information). As I step over the .WaitForStatus() call, I basically wind up waiting for the stopped status. . . forever. Well, I let it sit there for over 15 minutes yesterday (twice) and nothing happens. We never make it to the next line of code. It feels exactly like Bowie's Space Oddity (you know the part I am talking about). There's a lotta things about MyService you don't know anything about. Things you wouldn't understand. Things you couldn't. . . let me state this plainly. No services depend on MyService and MyService depends on no other services. Addendum MyOtherService and SonOfMyService both seem to behave correctly at this point in the code. All of these services share the same characteristics (they're our own services we hatched in a secret lab and have no dependencies). Is it possible there is something wrong with the MyService install or something? I do know that if I stop debugging at this point, MyService is still listed as running in Services (even after hitting refresh). If I try to restart it then (or run my application again and get to this point), I get a message about it not being able to accept control messages. After that, the service shows up as stopped and I can start it normally. Why isn't the service being stopped? Is this a quirk of win 7? A failing on my part to understand the ServiceController, or Win Services in general?
