  I want to access and play media files on machine S (Windows XP) from machine C (Windows XP). Using Windows File Sharing ("share this folder" stuff), if it works, I would share the folder containing media files on machine S, and I would be able to play media files, sitting in front of C, using any media player I want. Windows somehow ensures that the remote files behave like local files. But Windows file sharing won't work for me, is there any alternative? If two machines were both Linux, I would install an SSH server on S and use Nautilus from C to access and play media files. The reason why I can't use Windows file sharing is, my campus use two different subnets, I have S and C on different subnets and it seems that the firewall governing the whole network in campus doesn't allow file sharing between different subnets. I tried changing Windows Firewall settings on S to allow C in, it still wouldn't work, so it must be the other firewall.

(Implying that ALL of them are "formatting methods"... even #3) Reformat using NTFS (quick) Reformat using NTFS Leave the current file-system intact (no changes) What choice #3 really mean? Does it mean: A. Leave the current file-system (whatever file-system is already in use) and reformat to match that. (ie. If you current have NTFS, reformat to that again. If you currently have FAT32, reformat to that again. That is: Reformat without changing to a different file-system. Leave the current type.) or... B. Do absolutely nothing. Don't format. Don't delete any of my files. Abort the formatting process entirely.

• May the file size returned by stat be compromised?

  I want to make sure that nobody changed a file. In order to accomplish that, I want not only to check MD5 sum of the file, but also check its size, since as far as I understand this additional simple check can sophisticate falsification by several digits. May I trust the size that stat returns? I don't mean if changes were made to stat itself. I don't go that deep. But, for instance, may one compromise the file size that stat returns by hacking the directory file? Or by similar means, that do not require superuser privileges? It's Linux.

• How do I protect large file downloads through PHP and/or Apache?

  We have some large files (1-8GB) that are not publicly accessible. Currently we're serving them up through a PHP script that buffers the files in 1MB chunks and writes it to the output. It's incredibly CPU intensive and slows the server down when only a few downloads are active. We want to move the file transfer work to Apache or a more efficient method. We are using cookie authentication. FTP downloads are out unless there's some way to authenticate FTP sessions through the existing PHP session cookie. Ideally we'd like something where we can use PHP to hide the link to the file while it passes off the file transfer work to Apache, which is no doubt far more efficient at HTTP file transfers than PHP. We want to be able to resume downloads as well. Any help is appreciated.

Live Movie Maker, which comes with Windows 7, doesn't seem to have this option. I can only set specify the requested quality.   I notice that on a new CentOS image that I just booted up off of EC2 that the ulimit default is 1024 open files, but /proc/sys/fs/file-max is set at 761,408 and I'm wondering how these two limits work together. I'm guessing that ulimit -n is a per-user limit of number of file descriptors while /proc/sys/fs/file-max is system-wide? If that's the case, say I've logged in twice as the same user -- does each logged-in user have a 1024 limit on number of open files, or is it a limit of 1024 combined open files between each of those logged-in users? And is there much performance impact to setting your max file descriptors to a very high number, if your system isn't ever opening very many files?

When any user creates a file or a folder on the server I want the file or folder to get the following RWX permissions: Folders: drwxrws--- Files: -rwxrws--- To set the permissions like this manually I use chmod 2770 which works great. But I want this to happen automatically and therefore I've added the following lines to smb.conf: create mask = 2770 directory mask = 2770 force create mode = 2770 force directory mode = 2770 But when I test by creating a file in one of the folders it get's these permissions: Folder: drwxrwx File: -rwxrw---- What am I overlooking or doing wrong? Is the order of the lines relevant? Does the setgid digit (the 2 in 2770) mess things up?

  I imported many photos using the new "camera import" feature of Dropbox. Many of those were duplicates of photos previously imported by direct copying from the camera. Strangely, the Dropbox import appears to slightly reduce the file size. E.g. here on the right is the file imported through Dropbox: Comparison of the two files using pdiff returns "Images are binary identical", but tools such as fdupes or even the Picasa "show duplicate files" feature, consider them as unique. What can be the cause of this file size change? Is there any way to undo it? Most importantly: how can I de-dupe efficiently without regard to file size comparison? (running pdiff comparison over all photo pairs in my library is obviously impractical...) A solution for either OS X or Windows would do.

  I'd like to create a settings file for my logman command. I expect to have lots of perfmon counters. Is there any easy way to get all the perfmon counters' exact text anywhere? The only thing I thought of was to create a Perfmon Counter Log through the GUI and then export the list of selected counters--but I don't see an export option! I guess I could manually copy what I see on the screen, but that seems inefficient. I'm going to be dealing with tens of counters. Maybe there is a list somewhere? That'd be easier to copy and paste from.

  I'm having an issue with a file getting deleted seemingly randomly throughout the day. The vendor of the software whose file is getting deleete says that another piece of software installed on the computer is deleting it, while the other software's vendor says the opposite. I've tried using Process Monitor so I can pinpoint exactly what's deleting it, but even when filtered specifically to that file, createfile operations are being triggered a few times a second, and I can't seem to filter it to deletions specifically. Is there a tool or script I can use to specifically monitor deletion attempts on a single file?

Is there a way to rebalance the data over the 8 data files other than by telling sql server to empty the original? If this is the only way, is it possible to allow sql server to start writing to this file? MSDN says that once its empty its marked so no new data will be written to it. • File copying software to do this kind of work... in Windows 7 32 bit

  I need a software (Windows 7 32bit) to help me in this process: I have my documents, music, video clips, movies, pictures in my hard disk. These will not be scattered around the system. But will be inside C:\Senthil\ At the end of every week, I want to plug in an external hard disk and run a software that should make sure whatever is inside C:\Senthil\ is also present in the external disk. Files deleted from C:\Senthil\ should be deleted there, and new files should be copied etc... at the end of the process, every bit inside the source folder in my internal disk should be inside my external disk. A couple of important requirements and points: I do NOT need multiple versions or historic versions. I don't need the previous versions of my files. I only want the latest copy to be present in my "backup". Incremental backup makes sense. If files were not touched since the last backup, it need not copy. The size of my folder will run into GBs and in a year or two will go into TBs. But I will make sure the size of the external HDD is equal to or bigger than my source folder. I do not want it to run automatically because when I accidentally delete a file in my source, it will delete the one in the backup (I know this is why we have versioning facilities). I just want to be able to run it manually so that I am in control of when the backup is made and what is backed up and I should be able to pick something from the backup and restore it to the source folder in the above situation. Is there any software that will let me do exactly this? I don't want any other "smart" facility of the software to interfere with this process. I know what I want and the software can keep its smartness to itself :D The main reason I am asking this question is, I am a software developer and I can write this software myself. But I am a little constrained by time at the moment and I want to know if there is an existing program that can do this. Kindly don't worry about earthquakes or fire or snowstorms and bring up the "in case of a natural disaster your backup will also be in the damage zone and will be lost" argument because: I will have bigger things to worry about than my holiday memories. I don't think I will digitally store any life-ruining documents. This backup is only to avoid the inconvenience of obtaining a new copy of stuff that I have. Not to protect them against the end of the world. I am more worried about power surges in my area frying my system, hard disk failure, children who merrily hit Delete or teens who hit Shift + Delete or myself getting a little careless at times! In short: Is there a file/folder syncing software that listens to what I say and doesn't try to act smart? Please forgive me if I sound arrogant :)

• Roundcube "Server Error (OK!)": Lists no messages but can get messages according to the log file

  In my server setup there are three virtual machines. One windows machine, an Ubuntu Server 11.10 and a Debian Squeeze mailserver. On the Ubuntu system I have Roundcube installed and I want to connect to the virtual mail server. What's the problem After login into Roundcube it says "Server Error (OK!)" and lists no messages. More information On the Ubuntu server there is no error in any log file (even Roundcubes log files). In the imap log file there you can see Roundcube is able to fetch all imap messages (I can see them in the imap log file created by Roundcube). And on the side of the mail server there are no error messages too. The test connection at the end of the configuration of Roundcube works too, there is a "success" notification. Even the basic login at Roundcube login dialog works without any error message.   Is it possible to repair a corrupt VDI file? The OS on the VDI (XP) doesn't boot at all, it just hangs at a black screen. I was getting file errors before on its last boot, but now its not working at all. Sector viewer shows 'Invalid partition table Error loading operating system Missing operating system'. I tried mounting the file from the host OS, but it just says that the drive isn't formatted. I don't need to be able to run the VDI, but I do need some files that are on it. Is there any way to recover files from the corrupt VDI file?

  I've seen a number of articles about how to edit the hosts file in Windows 7, but it's all about how to open notepad as administrator, not the actual behavior of the dns lookups afterward. I've read that the hosts file is ignored in XP SP2 if DNS Client service is running. I have tried this on my XP machine and it seems to be true. I can see how it is a security danger to have a hosts file that user programs could modify. If it could write to hosts, then any malware could spoof dns locally with minimal difficulty. I'm trying to use the hosts file for testing stuff on my local network without it going to the live site on the internet. At the same time I want to be able to use dns on the normal internet. Mostly though I just want to understand the rules on the newer windows systems. Thanks!

I'd like to have the future ability to use it on Mac OS X, Windows 7/8, and Ubuntu (current releases+). I appreciate your recommendations. Thank you. (I like mounting a DMG and having a file directory structure that can be easily maintained and organized. When done, un-mounting the file.) • Clicked View Designer on a WinForm. Why was the file auto Checked out from Source Control?

I realize that there are probably options to silently check out the file without connfirmation, but why is VS thinking that it needs the file checked out in the first place?
