• A Domain Admin user doesn't have effective Administrative rights on a Domain Computer

  I am a developer who is setting up a virtual domain environment of testing purposes and am having trouble with the setup. I have created a new DC on a new Forest... call it dev.contoso.com. I have setup a virtual internal network for all machines that are going to be apart of this virtual test environment and have given each machine a static IP address in the 192.169.150.0 subnet. I have added machine1.dev.contoso.com to the domain dev.contoso.com. I have also provisioned a user account (adminuser) in the domain and made that user a member of Domain Admins group. Upon logging into machine1 using my newly created Domain Admin account, I cannot access/run any files on machine1. When I go into the advanced permissions for the c:\ folder and goto properties - Security Tab - Advanced - Effective Permissions and search for the dev\adminuser (mentioned above), I get an error saying: Windows can't calculate the effective permissions for admin user What do I need to do to get Administrative rights on Machine1? I am using Server 2008 R2 for both the AD controller and machine1.

• ReadyBoost in Windows 7

  I've bought an SD card today for my phot frame, but when I inserted it into my notebook I saw I could use it for ReadyBoost. Some background I'm a .net developer, using VMs and developing web applications (and Sharepoint). I use an HP notebook machine with Core 2 Duo 2GHz + 4GB RAM + 320 7200 HD. I simultaneously run Visual Studio 2010 with some plugins SQL Server Firefox with at least 10 tabs Chrome with about 5 tabs IIS VM with Server 2008 machine Sharepoint and occasionally also Photoshop and some InDesign as well. So I don't let my machine have a break. :D Question If I buy myself some really fast SDHC card (like SanDisk 16GB Extreme 30MB/s - is there anything faster) and use it with my Windows 7 ReadyBoost, will I see any performance gain? Is it going to work something similar to Seagate's HybridDrive Momentus with 4GB of solid state drive? What could I actually expect if I do put this card into my machine? And what would be recommended size? Observations I guess redirecting page file to it would speed up the system. Some VM machines on it would probably run faster as well because they could run parallel to HD host system I guess. Am I right or wrong?

• Pushing updates to live server... FTP isn't cutting it... a better method?

  I'm the lead developer in a team of 2. My partner has only just joined the project and despite using GIT for version control etc, we are still stuck in the dark ages when it comes to code deployment. Currently I make all site updates via FTP (this way I have control / responsibility over everything that goes live), using Filezilla. I've done this for years, but we now have some large PHP classes (300KB), and a lot of traffic. So in short, every time I upload a key class "general" for example, the site goes down until the file finishes uploading. This is only 5/6 seconds at a time, but this is increasingly unacceptable. I realise I can upload the file under a different name and then rename both files... but really there must be a better way? I've heard about rsyncing code across from another server, but I don't see how this prevents switching to the new file whilst uploading. We only have one server (for DB and Apache) but also use some cloud servers (for openx as an example).

• Lost partition after restarting

  I have Window 7 Professional Service pack installed in my Laptop Lenovo Thinkpad t420. After formatting the disk, and install Window 7 (detailed as above), I went to Computer -- Manager -- Storage -- Disk Management to split my 300gb C partition into 2 partition: C (which is 162gb) E (which is 140gb) Is work fine for about 2 days. Today, when I turn on my computer, I'm very suprise that the E partition is disappear. I can surely confirm that I didn't do any stupid thing yesterday. And before I shut down my computer, everything was fine. In general, here is what I did during the last today (from the point that I formatted the disk, and installed Window) Format 300gb hard disk Install window 7 Install eclipse, db2, .... ( I'm a developer) Install some other tools (Open office, Skype...) Install PGP (http://www.symantec.com/encryption) <--- I'm forced to used that due to my company policy Use Computer -- Manager -- Storage -- Disk Management to split my 300gb C partition into 2 partition as described above. • Windows 2003 Active Directory Integrated DNS zone not registering non-domain computers

  I'm not a networking guy by all means, I'm just a developer who dabbles enough to get into trouble and I'm there. So bear with me... :) At my office I have a Windows 2003 Domain Controller which also services DNS. On the domain I have a handful of computers and other misc. equipment/toys. For the DNS I only created a Forward Lookup Zone for my domain (mydomain.com). I run a lot of VM's so generally I have everything on the domain, however some of those VM's are not and only in a 'Workgroup'. I also have another laptop which belongs to another domain (otherdomain.com) which is here 100% but I use it for other purposes and has to belong to the otherdomain.com. With all that said, I have two questions: I have found any computer not on mydomain.com does not register it's IP address even though 'Register this connections address in DNS' is set to in the 'Advanced TCP/IP Settings' for the nic. Where have I messed this up? On the laptop which is registered on otherdomain.com, when I do a nslookup for a computer on mydomain.com (e.g. nslookup devbox1) it appends otherdomain.com as the suffix (e.g. queries devbox1.otherdomain.com). Same thing occurs if I use the fully qualified name. In the 'Advanced TCP/IP Settings' for that nic, I can 'Append these DNS suffixes' of mydomain.com but I fear that will hose my DNS lookups when I VPN to otherdomain.com. So what is the correct approach to resolve this issue? Do I add both mydomain.com and otherdomain.com in that order?

• Time Machine doesn't back up some folders/files (that it should)

  MacBook Pro 17" (Snow Leopard) -- WD 2TB external drive MacBook Pro 13" (Snow Leopard) -- Seagate 1TB external drive I find that Time Machine sometimes doesn't back up new folders (and the files in them). This occurs both when I choose "Back Up Now" from the Time Machine icon in the Menu Bar and in TM's scheduled backups. These are not excluded folders (nor are then in the TM do-not-back-up list); they're perfectly normal folders (at various locations) inside my home folder. The only way to force them to be backed up is to restart the computer (unmounting & mounting the TM external disk does not help). There seems to be a correlation with new folders (i.e., it's more likely to happen that an entire new folder is not backed up), but this may just be observer bias (because those are the folders that I go check to see if they've been backed up). It's not computer dependent (it happens on two different computers). It's not external disk dependent (it happens on two different external disks). It's not time dependent (not restarting for several days does not fix the problem). What does a restart change that these other events don't? I'm considering deleting the /.fseventsd folder (without restarting the computer) to see if that helps. I haven't tried logging out and logging in (without restarting the computer).

• Customizing user privileges for an account in Windows (xp/vista/7)?

  Hello, I'm a .NET developer and recently learning WINDOWS API. When ever a program starts, my Kaspersky anti-virus says "application belonging to trusted group is trying to set debug previleges". I started wondering what are debug privileges? When ever application tries to open a file (using OpenFileDialog) it gives this message about debug privileges. It sometimes also says the so & so application is trying to read desktop.ini I'm not sure about what exactly it is either. Any way, my concern is about user previlages. When creating user account. We can only set the account to be either Administrative or Limited user. • Are web service handler chains possible under IIS / ASP.NET

  I'm working with a client who wants me to implement a particular design in an IIS/ASP.NET environment. This design was already implemented in Java, but I am not sure it is possible using Microsoft technologies. In a Tomcat/Java environment one can create so call Handler Chains. In essence a handler runs on the server on which the web service is running and it intercepts the SOAP message coming to the web service. The handler can perform a number of tasks before passing control to the web service. Some of these tasks may refer to authentication and authorization. Moreover, one can create handler chains, such that the handlers can run in a particular sequence before passing control to the web service. This is a very elegant solution, as certain aspects of authentication and authorization can be automatically performed, without the developer of the client application and of the web service having to invest anything in it. The code for the client application and the web service is not affected. You may find a number of articles on internet on this subject by searching on Google for "web service handler chain". I performed searches for web service handlers in IIS or ASP.NET. I get some hits, but apparently handlers in IIS have another meaning than that described above. My question therefor is: Can handler chains (as available in Java and Tomcat) be created in IIS? If so, how (any article, book, forum...)? • Intermittent unavailability of an instance in a failover cluster while a standby node is offline in

  Hi everyone. I've got a small failover cluster that I run for the websites my company has. During a RAM upgrade of the standby server, our websites started to show errors about not being able to access the database server. I verified that the instance was indeed up and the server accessable via remote desktop. I also tried a SQL connection to it and it worked, but that might have been after it became available again. This happened on and off until we were able to roll back the hardware changes that were in progress on the standby server and we were able to bring it back up. There was nothing of interest in the SQL Server log, but there is a continous log for the whole duration of the problem, so there was no restart of the SQL Server service. The event viewer is of more interest, since it shows events relating to the heartbeat network card, but I don't know how that would affect the availability of the server, since the standby node is offline. I'd appreciate any help you can provide, it's not very redundant if the setup depends on the standby server being up. :) Here are the event logs from the time of the problem, I include all of them since I can't seem to see what could possibly be the cause of the problem. • Why do I get this message from chrome when navigating to https://www.amazon.com?

  This is probably not the site you are looking for! You attempted to reach www.amazon.com, but instead you actually reached a server identifying itself as *.voxcdn.com. This may be caused by a misconfiguration on the server or by something more serious. An attacker on your network could be trying to get you to visit a fake (and potentially harmful) version of www.amazon.com. Intermittently, I get a blank page when going to http://www.amazon.com. So I stuck an 's' in the URL, making it https://www.amazon.com and got that message above (with the nice red screen) from Chrome indicating there might be some monkey business going on. After hammering on the URL a bunch of times and pulling it up in Chrome's developer tool to look at the network traffic on it, the url (without the s) started behaving. The url with the s just hangs, but the red screen no longer comes up. Some specs... I've got a macBook Pro, Snow Leopard, Time Warner cable. I've had enough strange stuff happening over the past couple months (google.com, youtube.com, amazon.com not coming up or loading strange error messages with random reference numbers) that I finally decided to switch to OpenDNS. Still having problems, though.

• How can I use the Homebrew Python with Homebrew MacVim on Mountain Lion?

  I originally asked and answered this question: How can I use the Homebrew Python version with Homebrew MacVim? These instructions worked on Snow Leopard using Xcode 4.0.1 and associated developer tools. However, they no longer seem to work on Mountain Lion with Xcode 4.4.1. My goal is to leave the system's version of Python completely untouched, and to only install PyPI packages into Homebrew's site-packages directory. I want to use the vim_bridge package in MacVim, so I need to compile MacVim against the Homebrew version of Python. I've edited the MacVim formula to add these to the arguments: --enable-pythoninterp=dynamic --with-python-config-dir=/usr/local/Cellar/python/2.7.3/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/python2.7/config Then I install with the command: brew install macvim --override-system-vim --custom-icons --with-cscope --with-lua However, it still seems to be somehow using Python 2.7.2 from the system. • SharePoint Records Center Submitted E-mail Records not picked up

  We have set up a new SharePoint 2007 site with a Records Repository. We're using Exchange 2007 Managed Folders to route e-mails to this repository based on the 'label' attached to the e-mail as set in the Exchange 2007 journaling options. E-mails added to a Managed Folder get sent to SharePoint, they end up in the "Submitted E-mail Records" list of the Records Repository. That's according to plan, but the e-mails are not routed to the respective document library as defined by the label. Instead an error appears in the event viewer for every e-mail listed in the Submitted E-mail Records list, on every interval of the records repository schedule (set to every two minutes for testing purposes): Value cannot be null, parameter name: g. Sending a document from the SharePoint site iself to the Records Repository via the Send To... link works fine, but e-mails get stuck in the list... We have set Document Libraries in the Respository with and without content types (with matching names with the Label and the Record Routing rule set). Any ideas what could be wrong? • Lighttpd - byte range request doesn't work. can't stream mp4

  Am attempting to use the lastest flowplayer. (if it could work it would be pretty awesome btw) http://flowplayer.org One of the cool things about it is it uses the new HTML5 video element and supports random seeking/playback. In order to do this, you need a byte range request capable server on the backend. Luckily I'm using Lighttpd 1.5.0 on the backend. Unfortunately the current behavior is that when I do a random seek, the video simply restarts itself from the beginning. the docs say: "For HTML5 video you don't have to do any client side configuration. If your server supports byte range requests then seeking should work on the fly. Most servers including Apache, Nginx and Lighttpd support this." On my page, using chrome web developer tools, i can see when the video is requested, the server response headers indicate it is able to acce[t byte ranges. Accept-Ranges:bytes when I do random seek in the player, I can see that that byte ranges are request appropriately in the request header: Range: bytes=5668-10785 I can also verify the moov atom is at the front of the video file. My question here is if there is something else on the lighttpd side i'm missing in order to enable byte-range requests? The reason i ask is because the current behavior suggests that the lighttpd simply doesn't understand the byte range request and is just reserving the video from the beginning. Update it's clearer to put this here. As per RJS' suggestion I ran a curl command. in the response it looks like lighttpd is working as expected. • What configuration changes can I make to speed up extremely slow Windows VM's in ESXi 4.0.

  I've recently moved from VMWare Server to ESXi 4.0. Running on Dell T310. My VM's have been restored but they are running dog slow compared to VMWare Server. I loaded ESXi 4.0 using only default values. Where are some areas where I can tweak the performance? Even logging onto the VM's can be extremely sluggish. Trying to install software on any of them is a new experience in pain. Dell PowerEdge T310 Xeon X3460 2.80 GHz 32 GB RAM 1 HD (2 TB) I have 16 VM's on this server, but only six or so will be running during my testing. I keep an eye on the Resource Allocation and Performance tabs for the host and I never see CPU or RAM getting anywhere close to pegged. Events tab does show some notices for video RAM issues and some hints on Windows activation issues, but nothing that would point to the sort of sluggishness that I'm experiencing. 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit) - 4 GB RAM 1 Windows 7 (32-bit) - 2 GB RAM 1 Vista (32-bit) - 1 GB RAM 3 XP (32-bit) - 1 GB RAM Over to you! • Sharing disk volumes across OpenVZ guests to reduce Package Management Overhead

  Is it feasible to create a single "master" OpenVZ guest who would only be used for package management, and use something like mount --bind on several other OpenVZ guests sort of trick them into using the environment installed by the master guest? The point of this would be so that users can maintain their own containers, and yet stay in sync with the master development environment, so they'll always have the latest & greatest requirements without worrying too much about system administration. If they need to install their own packages, could put them in /opt, or /usr/local (or set a path to their home directory)? To rephrase, I would like several (developer's, for example) OpenVZ guests whose /bin, /usr (and so on...) actually refer to the same disk location as that of a master OpenVZ guest who can be started up to install and update common packages for the environment to be shared by all of this group of OpenVZ guests. For what it's worth, we're running Debian 6. • Poor gaming performance with hyper-v installed in windows 8

  I am getting very poor gaming performance on my Windows 8 host OS with Hyper-V installed but no guest machines running. For example World of Tanks reports 60-70 FPS without Hyper-V installed and 4-14 FPS with it installed. A similar, dramatic, hit is observed in several other games so the issue is not WoT specific. To make the point clear, I am not trying to run games in a virtual machine. I don't even have a VM running while observing this effect. I simply have the Hyper-V feature installed. My system specs: AMD Phenom II 965 (3.4 GHz) AMD Radeon 6950 2GB (XFX Double D HD-695X-CDFC) 16GB DDR3 1333 AMD 790GX chipset Mainboard (Gigabyte GA-MA790GPT-UD3H) I have tried every AMD driver from 12.8 to the current 12.11beta8, virtualization is enabled in the BIOS settings, the onboard 3300HD video device is disabled in BIOS and I have read the MSDN blog entry here regarding a similar issue in Server 2008 that was resolved in 2008 R2 (and hopefully not regressed in Win 8). I'd like to be able to use Hyper-V for development and testing at home (I am a sysadmin/software developer professionally). If, however, I can't also use my home system for entertainment I'll have to scrap those plans.

• Security in shared hosting vs VPS 'virtual appliances'

  I have to change my hosting provider. Right now I have a shared hosting account but I'm considering trying the LAMP stack appliance from turnkeylinux.org. I'm very comfortable with using linux, I've been using it for a long time. I have no problem ssh'ing into remote machines and do whatever I have to do (coding, reading logs, moving files, deploying, etc). The problem is that none of those tasks have involved securing the server/firewall. My experience has been as a desktop user or developer deploying apps/files in remote servers. Ignoring the security in the application logic (read: any scripts, frameworks, websites I might have created or installed) - I'm worried about things like base configuration of deamons, firewall, ports, executable scripts being readable from the outside and whatnot. My question is: how do you compare the (expected) out of the box security of the LAMP stack from turnkey and the (expected) security of a "regular" shared hosting provider? I was hoping to find some guides with a list of steps to do to protect my server but the only documentation I found was simply referring to ubuntu's documentation.

• Kerberos service on win2k dc will not start following disk failure

  Hi, I have a win2k (mixed mode domain) with 4 DCS. One of these also acts an exchange 2000 server which uses 2 logical volumes from an MSA 2000 array. AD etc is stored on local drives. We experienced a problem last week when the raid array fell back to a redundant controller and this temporarily meant that the two logical drives were not visible to the server for around 5 minutes and a couple of reboots. The log records these Events as Type: Warning Event Source: Disk Event Category: None Event ID: 51 Date: 06/11/2009 Time: 11:46:23 User: N/A Computer: server1 Description: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation. Following these problems, the server “kerberos Key Distribution” service refuses to start with an “error.31 a device attached to the system is not functioning”. All other automatic start services (including net logon) are running and there are no DNS issues etc. All devices are also functioning but the two logical MSA disks are now numbered in the Windows Disk Management MMC as 2 and 4 and I suspect that they may have previously been identified as disks 1 & 2 and perhaps windows still sees this as an ongoing failure?? Replication has not been affected but obviously there are many audit failures in the security log relating to users and workstations presumably linked to the Kerberos issue. Attempting to manually start the kerberos service generates the following in the System Log. Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7023 Date: 09/11/2009 Time: 09:46:55 User: N/A Computer: Server1 Description: The Kerberos Key Distribution Center service terminated with the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning. DCDIAG passes all tests except “Advertising” and “Services” which I believe relate directly to the failure of Kerberos only. Any advice would be appreciated.

• Does a Windows 7 dvd only have one language?

  I'm a Dutch developer living in Spain. I recently composed a new computer from new parts and I installed Windows 7 Professional 64 bit (OEM) on it. On the web site of the on-line shop there was a note saying "language: Spanish". Because my English is quite a bit better than my Spanish, but mainly because it is much easier to find information on the web in English, I want my OS to be in English. I asked the on-line shop if they also sold the UK version of Windows 7 but they assured me that "all Windows 7 versions are multi-language". With the installation of XP a few years ago, I remember that I was offered the option English or Spanish while the installation process was still in the DOS-like (non-graphical) screen. While installing Windows 7, I did not see any non-graphical screen and the first time I was asked about the language, was in a drop-down list that contained only Spanish. I know about the language pack possibility of Windows 7, but this is not available on Professional. Even if I had Ultimate, I don't know if it would be possible to install Windows in Spanish, and then add English as a second language from a language pack. I get the impression that English has to be the base-language. Furthermore, I am a bit sceptical until I'd see it in action. What happens with shortcuts (i.e. Select All: ctrl-a in English / ctrl-e in Spanish, and what about logging messages in Event Viewer, etc) So can anybody tell me how it works with languages in Windows 7? Have I been misinformed by the computer shop? Could it be that OEM versions of Windows are single language an a full installation is not?

  I am a new person in Tegra Linux development. I have Tamontem NG Evaluation board with Tegra 3 Chip. I installed L4T sample file system from NVIDIA tegra Resources (https://developer.nvidia.com/linux-tegra) and installed the file system as described in the documentation provided in NVIDIA site. Already these was an SD card with L4T running. i dont want to change the boot loader. So I copied the boot.scr.uimg to root (/) folder and uImage to boot(/boot/) and it starts booting from the existing SD card. After that while booting, some errors occurred in some Bluetooth devices (there is no bluetooth device in the board). So I disabled Bluetooth by giving the following command sudo mv /etc/init/bluetooth.conf /etc/init/bluetooth.conf.noexec Now the problem is that mouse and keyboard are not working. So i cannot login. Even though i installed desktop, the mouse and keyboard are not working. But mouse and keyboard are enumerating. lsusb command is showing the USB mouse and keyboard. The installed file system is Ubuntu 13.04. Linux Kernel version is 3.1 What to do. Please help.Thanks in Advance.

  I'm running a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Virtual Machine. Last week, the VM stopped unexpectedly now mysql will not start on the VM. These two events may be related, they may not be. • Does a 3ware "ECC-ERROR" matter on a JBOD when I have ZFS?

  I have a FreeBSD 8.x machine running ZFS and with a 3ware 9690SA controller. ZFS does not currently detect any errors. zpool status says No known data errors My question: Is this ECC-ERROR something that I need to be concerned about? According to the 3ware CLI 9.5.2 Manual, an ECC-ERROR means that the 3ware controller caught a read-error for one or more sectors on this drive. This sometimes occurs when a RAID array is recovering from a failed disk. I believe that ECC-ERRORS can also be detected when the 3ware Controller verifies each disk. None of the drives have failed and thus there was no drive rebuild, so I assume that 3ware discovered a bad sector when it ran it's weekly auto-verify scan of the disks. Is this a safe assumption? According to our logs, ZFS has not detected any bad sectors on this drive. ZFS can work around read errors -- if ZFS detects a bad sector on the drive, it will simply mark that sector as bad and never use it again. From the ZFS perspective one bad sector isn't a big deal, although it might indicate that the drive is starting to go bad.

  How to enable InnoDB, which was previously disabled with skip-innodb option. Case 1: Disabled the innodb with skip-innodb option and show engines givens as below. • Referencing SQL Server 2008 R2 SMO from Visual Studio 2010

  Hello. We read a number of things about referencing SQL Server SMO from Visual Studio but still don't have the definite answers we need. So, here it goes... A number of years ago we created a C# application using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. In that application, we added .NET references to a number of SQL Server SMO objects, and everything worked fine. Those references were: Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlEnum GAC 9.0.242.0 We have now migrated to Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2. However, when we try to reference those same SMO objects for SQL Server 2008 R2, they don't appear in the .NET references tab. We're wanting to reference the SQL Server 2008 R2 version of those same SMO assemblies for our upgraded C# application. On our development machines, we have SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer installed with all options, including the SDK such that the assemblies are found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, my first questions are: Are we supposed to do file references to the SMO assemblies instead of .NET references in Visual Studio 2010 w/ SQL Server 2008 R2? Or, is there some problem with our development machines such that the SMO assemblies are not appearing in the .NET references tab? Next, our production machines will have SQL Server 2008 R2 Workgroup installed with the client tools option selected, thus providing those same SMO assemblies in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, the next questions are: When we release to production, are we supposed to redistribute the SMO assemblies with our application? Or, will our application work on the production servers without redistributing the SMO assemblies (since the client tools/SMO assemblies have been installed)? What else????? Thanks for the help!

• 403 Forbidden when Deploying asp.net 4.0 site to IIS 7

  So I have an EC2 instance running, the URL NoWeatherSurprises.com I have the DNS pointing there, and I set up a new site in IIS 7 and pointed it to a folder. I used Visual Studios Web Developer 2010 express to publish to this folder. It now has the binaries and such. However if I go to NoWeatherSurprises.com I get the welcome to IIS 7 screen. I'd expect to go to my application If I navigate to http://noweathersurprises.com/weather/ [weather was the folder I published to under wwwroot] I get a 403 forbidden. I have no idea why, I am guessing that it is trying to do a directory listing or something instead of launching my MVC Application. So 2 problems in summary. It is not pointing the domain to the folder directly and I need to add /weather I am getting a 403 forbidden instead of the results of my home controller with the index action. I am new to IIS 7, I had been using IIS 6 and had a lot less trouble setting it up, but I suspect that's my own fault and i am just missing something. Thanks in advance for any help
