• Gratuitous use of System.Runtime.Serialization attributes?

  Is there any cost/drawback (apart from typing too much) to adorning a class with System.Runtime.Serialization attributes (like [DataContract]) such that it can be used locally as a direct reference to a desktop Client project or as a type for a WCF service? The goal here is to write a data-tier class that can be used in both rich client (WPF) and Web scenarios. My data classes will be in a project that is separate from Client and WCF (*.svc code-behind) code. Is this a valid attempt to reuse code?

• URL rewriting to a common end point

  I want to create an asp.net white-label site http://whitelabel.com, that could be styled for each of our clients according to their specific needs. So for example, client abc would see the site in their corporate colours and be accessed through their specific url http://abc.com. Likewise client xyz would see the site in their own styling and url http://xyz.com. Typing either url, in effect, takes the user to http://whitelabel.com where the styling is applied, and the client's url structure is retained. I was thinking of URL rewriting using URLRewriter.Net (http://urlrewriter.net/), or similar, mapping the incoming address to a client id and applying the theme accordingly. So, a url rewrite rule may be something like <rewrite url="http//abc.com/(.+)" to="~/$1?id=1" /> <rewrite url="http//xyz.com/(.+)" to="~/$1?id=2" /> I could then read the id, map it to the client, and with a bit of jiggery-pokery, apply the correct theme. I was wondering if: this is the right approach ? I've overlooked something ? there is a better way to do this ? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Sending jpegs by tcp socket...sometimes incomplete.

  Vb.net Hi I've been working on a project for months now (vb 2008 express). There is one final problem which I can't solve. I need to send images to a client from a 'server'(listener). The code below works most of the time but sometimes the image is incomplete. I believe this might be something to do with the tcp packet sizes varying, maybe limited by how busy it is out there on the net. I have seen examples of code that splits the image into chunks and sends them out, but I can't get them to work maybe because I'm using a different vb version. The pictures to be sent are small 20k max. Any working code examples would be wonderful. I have been experimenting and failing with this final hurdle for weeks. Thanks in anticipation. I would like to change the background color of my control when IsDirty is true AND the control is selected.   Hi, I have been creating a thin browser client (on java) that sends an RTMP stream to a specified red5 instance. I also use RTMP Researcher to monitor the traffic and events that occur between the client and the server. Here is what I note: There is obviously a map with options that is being exchanged between the red5 instance and the client. You can see it here: (direct link : http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/661/newbitmapimagelb.png ) What I am wondering about is is there a programmatic way to obtain this map in the client side and maybe change some of the parameters or just examine them Edit: I am connecting like this connect ( host, port, app, callback ); . I assume I am sending some default parameters along, because the other connect methods have also an optionsMap as an argument. I was wondering what are the possible values that could be put in such an optionsMap and where to obtain a list of them?

• Ajax UpdatePanels SetFocus issue

  I set the AutoPostback property of a textbox to True so I can process the TextChanged event on the server and, based on what they typed in the textbox, appropriately display a message in an update panel. The problem is, when the partial screen refresh is performed, no control on the screen has focus. 99% of the time, when the text in the textbox is changed, it is because the user has tabbed forward, and so, to limit the disruption in the lost of focus, I perform a "Focus" call on teh next control in the tab sequence. For the most part, this works OK, but of course, is disputive if the user is tabbing in the reverse order or has used the mouse to set the focus to another control. In these situations, the focus would be set to the next control even though the user was trying to set focus elsewhere. OK, that sucks. Now what I consider the bigger problem with calling the focus method on the server: In IE, it works OK, but in Mozilla Firefox and Chrome, setting the focus causes a repositioning of the scroll bar, even though none is necessary because the control is already in view. I realize that I could switch to doing AJAX web service calls, but these darn Updae Panels are so convenient if used in moderation. is there anyway to use updatepanels and not have these focus/scroll issues?

  I have an INotifyProperty item that I have bound to a wpf control. <local:ScrollingSelector DataContext="{Binding Path=SelectedScreen.VisualizationTypes}" Grid.ColumnSpan="2" Grid.Column="3" Margin="0,0,0,0" Grid.Row="1"/> If I change the SelectedScreen property to a different control the binding still assumes the first control. Why is this? Is there an easy work-around?

• C# Detect Localhost Port Usage

  In advance, thank you for your advice. I am currently working on a program which uses Putty to create a SSH connection with a server that uses local port forwarding to enable a client, running my software, to access the service behind the SSH server via localhost. IE: client:20100 - Internet - Remote SSH server exposed via router/firewall - Local Intranet - Intranet Web POP3 Server:110. Cmd Line: "putty -ssh -2 -P 22 -C -L 20100:intranteIP:110 -pw sshpassword sshusername@sshserver" Client would use putty to create a SSH connection with the SSH server specifying in the connection string that it would like to tie port 110 of the Intranet POP3 Server to port 20100 on the client system. Therefore the client would be able to open up a mail client to localhost:20100 and interact with the Internal POP3 server over the SSH tunnel. The above is a general description. I already know what I am trying to do will work without a problem so am not looking for debate on the above. The question is this...How can I ensure the local port (I cannot use dynamic ports, so it must be static) on localhost is not being used or listened to by any other application? The first port I try is actually being listened to by uTorrent. The above code does not catch this and my connection fails. What is the best method to ensure a port is truly free? I do understand some other program may grab the port during/after I have tested it. I just need to find something that will ensure it is not currently in use AT ALL when the test is executed. If there is a way to truly reserve the localhost port during the test, I would love to hear about it.

• not getting output from parmiko/ssh command

  I am using paramiko/ssh/python to attempt to run a command on a remote server. When I ssh manually and run the command in question, I get the results I want. But if I use the python (co-opted from another thread on this site) below, there is no returned data. If I modify the command to be something more basic like 'pwd' or 'ls' I can then get the output. Any help is appreciated. • iphone: is there any secure way to establish 2-way SSL from an application

  Hi I need to establish a HTTPS 2-way SSL connection from my iPhone application to the customer's server. However I don't see any secure way to deliver the client side certificates to the application (it's an e-banking app, so security is really an issue). From what I have found so far the only way that the app would be able to access the certificate is to provide it pre-bundeled with the application itself, or expose an URL from which it could be fetched (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2037172/iphone-app-with-ssl-client-certs). The thing is that neither of this two ways prevent some third party to get the certificate, which if accepted as a risk eliminates the need for 2-way SSL (since anyone can have the client certificate). The whole security protocol should look like this: - HTTPS 2-way SSL to authenticate the application - OTP (token) based user registration (client side key pair generated at this step) - SOAP / WSS XML-Signature (requests signed by the keys generated earlier) Any idea on how to establish the first layer of security (HTTPS) ? regards

  Hi, I have an observable collection implemented in my user control which indicates states of a device. Based on the collection change, the user control is to trigger animations(subscribe to collectionchanged event). The observable collection is implemented as a dependency property. In the application, I data bind the device states to the user control observableCollection using one-way databinding. When a new state is added in the application, I can see the ObservableCollection in the user control is updated. However, the CollectionChanged event never got fired, so no animations. Does anyone has an idea why this is so? Thank you in advance.

  Greetings, I have some control which display bunch of textblocks and image. I would like the image to be surrounded by text. I have already implemented some functionality by using FlowDocument and custom bindable run control. (These controls are included inside user control). When I generate lots of these controls in treeview, application goes into infinite loop. I asked on forums before about this problem and the answer was that it can be WPF issue. Howver when I removed bindable run from my user control, problem dissappeared. Now I am trying to implement other solution where image will be surrounded by text. Can someone please help me? EDIT: Generally i would like to achieve something like this

• REST web service keeps first POST parametrs

  I have a web service in REST, designed with Java and deployed on Tomcat. So, I had tested this with the @GET actually doing POST work, any user inputed data and information from ma Java FX app and it went direct to webservice's database. However, I changed so the CREATE operation was performed through a webservice responding to an actual POST HTTP request. However, when I run the client and add some info, parameters go OK, but in next time I input different parameters it'll input the same. I run this several times and I can't get the reason of it. • Update Source Without Losing Focus - WPF Telerik RADDatePicker

  I have a Telerik RadDatePicker, which I am binding to the SelectedDate property. I want this control to show a validation error when the default date set in the control is removed/deleted. I was able to achieve this, but the problem was that the validation error occurs only when Enter is pressed or when we click outside the control. Is there a way tell RadDatePicker to update the source without moving the focus? (Tried UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged, but still it wasnt working)

• Active Directory public key use

  I have a client who has a requirement to validate users logging into my web application against his active directory using LDAP. In trying to connect using the DirectoryEntry and DirectorySearcher .NET classes, I can connect to his AD Server but not access it. The client's AD server has an SSL Certificate for which he has given me a public key file but I don't know how to use this public key file in my C# code. When I issue the connect command through code, I see, via Wireshark, my application sending the connection request. I then see the server responding with "Server Hello, Certificate, Certificate Request, Server Hello Done". Then my application never responds after that. In using another application, written by somebody else for which I do not have code, I see the same request from the server and then see the application respond with "Certificate, Client Key Exchange" and then the application connects and runs. With that said, my question then becomes, how can I get my C# application to load and send the key file I got from the client?

  My web application has (server side) a wav file saved using truespeech and then a client (ie6, ie7) can ask to plat the file and the web server serves it.. All you need on xp is to have WMP 9 or higher and it all works. but on vista.. suddenly the vista client box can't play the file cause it doesn't support truespeech (some upgrade!) anyone has an idea of what should I do? You can suggest a way to make it work on the client (but in general, I don't like having to say that the solution includes installing anything on the client box) you can suggest I don't save the server side file in truespeech, and instead use something else (what?)
