  • MEncoder Install on Ubuntu

    I am writing this after checking almost all the posts but none of those solved my problem. I am trying to install mencoder to process some videos but there are strange errors coming. For examples when I try sudo apt-get install mencoder the following errors comes out: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming.   • How do I install FreeNX server so that it works correctly?

    I've tried every single possible way of installing the server now, I've read every how to available and I still can't get it to work. Please let me know in which step I do wrong. I'm using ubuntu 10.10. I will mainly be referring to the following how-to, but also this, and this one. First I add the ppa Install Freenx Download the special Freenx package as stated in the howto, fix ownership - install it Create custom SSH key Copy the file /var/lib/nxserver/home/.ssh/client.id_dsa.key to the client and import it in nomachine (windows 7 x64) Check that both the user I will be logging in with and the user nx is in AllowedUsers in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file Check the port that ssh is listening on Login through nomachine with my regular user account in ubuntu I always receive the message "authentication failed for [user]" when I try to log in. And I can't see the user "nx" which is said to be created during installation when I look under System-Administration-"Users & Groups". Can anyone please enlighten me if there is any step that I miss or have misunderstood? Thank you very much! (Or is there an easier way of enabling remote desktop that it can be used with a windows machine? I prefer not using VNC because I was hoping of being able to get better performance than that. And when I tried using XRDP I only received a black screen on the client.)

  • Packing jar files into library jar files

    Firstly, this question is not about packing a simple jar file (e.g. lwjgl) into a runnable jar file. I know how to do this using JarSplice. So if I have a game which uses JInput, I will pack my game jar and jinput.jar using JarSplice and enter the natives in the process. The problem arises when I want to create a custom library that uses JInput, and then pack that into my games. See, the whole idea of writing a game library is that I don't ever have to even copy code like the wrapper I wrote for JInput Controller, and I always have a definitive version inside a library jar. Basically what I wanna do is create a jar file of my library, pack jinput.jar into it using JarSplice, possibly with the natives as well, and then when I want to export a jar of my game, I either export it automatically through Eclipse with the library jar, or, if that doesn't work, use JarSplice. I've tried several solutions, and nothing works. When I try to pack the game jar and the library jar using JarSplice, I get an error saying that there's either duplicate .project or .classpath. When I try to export my game through Eclipse with the library jar, it won't run (which is to be expected), but then, if I try to attach the natives with JarSplice, it doesn't give me any errors but the jar doesn't run. I'm not expecting anyone to solve this, but if anyone has an idea, something that will allow me to never look at the Gamepad code ever again, that would be awesome. I don't care if I have to package my library jar using JarSplice 5 times, and then do the same with the game jar, as long as it works. Otherwise I'll just have to copy the Gamepad class into every project alongside the library jar. :(

  • How to fix sound in wolfenstein Enemy Territory

    I installed wolf:et, and i cant get sound to work. Everything that i have installed is in default paths, i had 10.4 and then upgraded to 10.10 via software update gui. I had sound working in 10.04 with method under 2. I have tried following killall esd; et; esd with that i get ------- sound initialization ------- /dev/adsp: No such file or directory Could not open /dev/adsp ------------------------------------ sudo -i echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss echo "et.x86 0 0 disable" /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss exit with that i get bash: /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss: No such file or directory and indeed i do not have that, i have only sub0 and sub1 in pcm0p I have tried running et with et-sdl-sound script, but with that i get this output in console http://pastebin.com/J7gRU1uh I have probably messed up sdl libraries, could not get sound to work, so downloaded new from debian package site and installed them. Tried setting SDL_AUDIODRIVER="pulse" in et-sdl-sound, looks like i am getting same error as in method 3. pasuspender -- et +set s_alsa_pcm plughw:0 gives me ------- sound initialization ------- /dev/adsp: No such file or directory Could not open /dev/adsp _------------------------------------ Misc: @Oli: i do not know if i am running pulse or esd, how can i check that?

    I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and since I hate unity I installed the Xubuntu package and am using XFCE instead. Since I have a Radeon HD5770 I also installed the fglrx drivers. This all went fine (aside from the fact that the post-release update fglrx drivers have an error on installation and Ubuntu thinks they're not installed when they actually are. I configured my display settings (dual monitors, a 17" CRT on VGA and a 17" LCD on DVI) in the amdcccle program and everything was perfect. THEN, 2 days ago, I accidentally clicked on the "Display" settings in XFCE "settings" manager. After that, everything got screwed. Now, I normally run the CRT at 1152x854 and the LCD at 1280x1024 with the CRT as my primary monitor (with panel) and the LCD without panels etc just to display other windows when I want to drag them over there. The problem is now that if I set my CRT to 1152x864, it stays at 1280x1024 virtually and half the stuff falls off the screen. It also puts the LCD at 1280x1024 BUT then overlays the CRT's display ontop with different wallpaper in an L shape down the right-hand and bottom edges. In short, nothing makes sense and everything is FUBAR. I tried uninstalling fglrx through synaptic, and renaming xorg.conf and also the xfce XML file that has monitor settings but it still won't make sense. Unity on the other hand can currently set everything normally so the problem appears to be only with XFCE. In any case, I can't even get the fglrx drivers back, when I re-installed them, I can't run amdccle anymore as it says the driver isn't installed!! Can someone help me reset my XFCE settings so the monitors aren't screwed with some incorrect virtual desktop size and also so I can get fglrx drivers back and working? I really don't want to have to format and reinstall and go through all the hassle but it looks like I may have to :(

    I'm very pleased to welcome Elke Phelps as a new contributor to this blog.  Elke needs little introduction to most long-time readers, as she's been a pillar of the E-Business Suite sysadmin community for years.  What's special about this announcement is that Elke is joining this blog's panel of guest authors as a member of my Product Management team in the Oracle E-Business Suite Applications Technology Group.  I am thrilled to have her as part of my team and look forward to her contributions to this blog. Here's a short bio: Elke is a Product Manager in the Oracle E-Business Suite Applications Technology Group.  She joined Oracle in 2011 after having been an Oracle customer and Oracle Technologist (Oracle Database Administrator, Oracle Applications DBA, Technical Architect and Technical Manager of an Oracle Applications DBA Team) since 1993. Elke is the lead author of the Oracle Applications DBA Field Guide (Apress 2006) and Oracle R12 Applications DBA Field Guide (Coqui Tech and Press 2010).  Elke is also the founder of the Oracle Applications User Group (OAUG) E-Business Suite Applications Technology Special Interest Group (SIG) and served as President of the SIG from February 2005 - August 2011.  Elke has been a speaker at Oracle OpenWorld and Collaborate since 2004.  Prior to joining Oracle, Elke was designated an Oracle ACE (2007) and Oracle ACE Director (2009).   Elke has a Computer Science Degree and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma.  In her spare time, Elke enjoys traveling especially to Europe, Puerto Rico and the amazing US National Parks.  Elke also enjoys hiking, antiquing, gardening and cooking.

Updates will be delivered via My Oracle Support, where you can continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JRE 6 desktop clients.  Java 6 is covered by Extended Support until June 2017.  All E-Business Suite customers must upgrade to JRE 7 by June 2017. Coexistence of JRE 6 and JRE 7 on Windows desktops The upgrade to JRE 7 is highly recommended for EBS users, but some users may need to run both JRE 6 and 7 on their Windows desktops for reasons unrelated to the E-Business Suite. Most EBS configurations with IE and Firefox use non-static versioning by default. JRE 7 will be invoked instead of JRE 6 if both are installed on a Windows desktop.     I am trying to install a chemical/molecular biology modeling program called Molsoft ICM-Pro. Initially after downloading the program and trying to open, it gave me error messages that I was missing shared libraries, and after talking with my network administrator he recommended I install the ia32 shared libraries using sudo apt-get install ia32-libs Which gives sudo apt-get install ia32-libs Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done ia32-libs is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. so I am assuming the libraries installed correctly, but now when I try to run the program I get this error: ubuntu:/home/reilly/icmd icm icm: error while loading shared libraries: libjpeg.so.62: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory So my question is, where can I get the library containing libjpeg.so.62? Additionally, I was told I would need libXmu.so.6 and libtiff.so.3 . Is there a shared library that could be missing that would contain these files? I am an ubuntu noob, so sorry if the information I provided was unclear. Any help would be immensely appreciated! btw I am using ubuntu 12.04 dual boot with windows on an HP pavilion dv6

  • xorg, nvidia, log-in all hosed - how can I completely reset graphics set-up/settings?

    I just did a fresh install of Mythbuntu 12.04.1 on my Intel MB with nVidia 9500GT graphics card. Hardware's been working great with 10.10 for about 2 years. Background: (optional - feel free to skip to question) I was trying to get my component video output to generate 720p, messing around with the nvidia drivers, and now the entire display system is hosed. I can SSH in and get a terminal. Depending on which nvidia package I install/remove, I get: Garbage on screen (after I "apt-get remove nvidia*") A low-res graphical log-in screen where I can log in as fred or guest. If I log in as fred, it displays some text mode status line then goes right back to the log-in screen. If I log in as guest, I actually get the full Ubuntu desktop, but I need to be able to log in as fred. Other times I get an error: "API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 304.43, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 295.49." I've googled around, including trying this thread with the same error message, but to no effect. Question: How can I just reset x settings, drivers, everything display-related to the exact same way it was after a fresh install?

  • Is comparing an OO compiler to a SQL compiler/optimizer valid?

    I'm now doing a lot of SQL development at my new job where as before I was doing Object Oriented desktop app stuff. I keep running across very large scripts (thousands of lines) and wanting to refactor in some way. I am seeing that SQL is a different sort of beast and it's probably fine to have these big scripts for the most part but while explaining this to me people are also insisting that the whole idea of refactoring is bad. That stuff like the .NET compiler are actually burdened by refactored code and that a big wall of code is more efficient and better design than code designed for reuse, readability and scalability. The other argument is that OO compilers are almost dangerously inefficient and don't have efficient memory management or runs too many CPU instructions compared to older "simpler" compilers and compared to SQL. Are these valid complaints? Even if some compiler like a C compiler is modestly more "efficient" (whatever that means on this high of a level without seeing code) would you want to write applications in C over C# or Java? Is comparing an OO compiler to a SQL compiler/optimizer even valid?

  • Our New Website Header (& Other Tweaks)

    Last week, the Oracle Technology Network Website went fixed-width. There are several reasons for this, most relating to providing a consistent user experience, easier management of Website content, etc. Furthermore, it's fairly standard for developer portals these days - java.sun.com, MSDN, and IBM DeveloperWorks are also all fixed-width sites. (My apologies to everyone who is unhappy about this change, but it really is an overall positive one.) Today, we have rolled out a brand-new header, the first step in what we call the "Mosaic" project - which is an effort to make the user experience across all Oracle Websites more consistent. To summarize the impact: The "pull-down" menus on the OTN site disappear; most of them move into a "flyout" button in the header. You can access the OTN flyout from any page on Oracle.com or the OTN site. Great for our page views. :) You also have direct access to the Downloads index from anywhere on Oracle.com. If you so desire, you can directly access product overviews, Oracle University and Support info, Oracle Store, etc etc from the OTN site now. Due to limited space in the flyout we cannot accommodate *all* the pull-down items, but they are all no more than 1 or 2 clicks away. This approach has been validated in extensive user testing over the last few months; I welcome your feedback now in comments. There are many other changes in train, with the next one being: A major homepage redesign, the first in 4 or 5 years.

  • Error with APE Server Installation

    I was trying to install APE-Server from the .deb file at the ape-server homepage (www.ape-project.org) and I ran into an error so wanted to try removing the installation and reinstalling. I did a sudo apt-get remove ape-server which ran successfully but left ape-server folders in my /etc/ and /etc/init.d locations. Me being an idiot new comer to linux decided that manually delete those folders. Now when I reinstall the ape-server those folders don't get recreated and therefore I cannot send the /etc/init.d/ape-server [option] command because the folder is not found. When I try to sudo apt-get purge (or remove) ape-server I get the following sudo apt-get purge ape-server Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: ape-server* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 92 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed.   • How to check Early Z efficiency on AMD GPU with Windows 7

    I have a game using DirectX 9, and a development station using Win 7 x64. I am still able to get access to another station with Vista x64 / dual booted with WinXP x86. I wanted to check early Z efficiency in the game and to my sadness all tools I have tried seem to be unable to perform this task: AMD PerfStudio AMD GPUPerfStudio 2 does not support DirectX 9 at all AMD GPUPerfStudio 1.2 does not install correctly on Windows 7. When I have tweaked the MSI package (a simple OS version check adjustment was needed), it complained the drivers I have do not provide needed instrumentation. The drivers old enough to support the GPUPerfStudio would most likely not be able to operate with my Radeon 5750 card (though this is something I am not 100 % sure, I did not attempt to try any older drivers, not knowing which I should look for) PIX PIX does not seem to contain any counters like this. It offers some ATI specific counters, but when I try to activate them, the PIX reports "PIX encountered a problem while attaching to the target program." I do not want to upgrade to DX 10/11 just to be able to profile the game, but it seems without the step I am somewhat locked with a toolset which is no longer supported. I see only one obvious options which would probably work, and that is using WinXP (or with a little bit of luck even Vista) station, perhaps with some older AMD card, to make sure GPUPerfStudio 1.2 works. Other than that, can anyone recommend other options how to check GPU HW counters (HiZ / EarlyZ in particular, but if others would be enabled as well, it would be a nice bonus) for a DirectX 9 game on Windows 7, preferably on AMD GPU? (If that is not possible, I would definitely prefer switching GPU to switching the OS, but before I do so I would like to know if I will not hit the same problem with nVidia again)

  • Gmail Doesn't Like My Cron

    You might wonder what *nix administration has to do with maker culture. Plenty, if *nix is your automation platform of choice. I am using Ubuntu, Exim, and Ruby as the supporting cast of characters for my reminder service. Being able to send yourself an email with some data or a link at a pre-selected time is a pretty handy thing to be able to do indeed.
