• Adaptec 2420SA RAID 1 rebuild 66% after 1 week

  We're running a 500GB RAID 1 on an Adaptec 2420SA - 2x500GB Hitachi Drives. It suddenly crashed and required a rebuild -- was not even booting. It's only at 66% after about a week. Very frustrated. This is the second box with the same card and drives that has had issues with the RAID/drives. Another box had this happen twice. Both machines are Linux boxes. CentOS and Fedora. I dunno if it's the firmware -- which currently needs an update (any help doing this over PXE would be great- I have used UDA to do PXE boots in the past). Anyway, would love to hear about experiences with this card and firmware. I thinking of going google and just using cheap boxes no raid and have server redundancy instead.

• Rendering with Direct3D

  Hi, I'm slightly confused about how Direct3D rendering works. Basically, as long as I render to one surface, everything is fine. But when I try rendering to multiple surfaces, it seems like everything is still rendered to one surface. I think there's something wrong with my calls. For each update cycle this is what I do 1. device-BeginScene() 2. sprite-Begin(...) ... A bunch of GetRenderTarget to store the old render target, then SetRenderTarget to set a new surface, and then things like CreateVertexBuffer, SetTexture, etc to draw on the new render target. Then resetting to the old render target. sprite-Draw([the back buffer]) (the back buffer is actually another surface, not the actual back buffer. But here it is being drawn onto the actual back buffer, I think) sprite-End() device-EndScene() device-Present(...) Also, it seems like if I mix sprite drawing and non-sprite drawing onto a surface, that first one set of render commands is executed and then the other set, rather than in order by when each command was called. If anyone could shed light on any of this, it would be much appreciated.

• Recent Innovations to ILOM

• Big square ads appear in lower right corner of both IE and Chrome

  In both IE and Chrome, large ads appear in the lower right corner of the browser window. Sometime they look reputable like for Microsoft, but sometimes they are big flashing boxes that say "You have won". Right now I am looking at "Need to lose 30 lbs?" I ran Microsofot Security Essentials and it didn't find anything. I then ran Windows Defender Offline (boot from CD). WDO found five things lincluding browser hijack that caused the wrong page to appear after clicking a link. It reported that it cleaned successfully, after which I ran a quick scan to confirm. After rebooting I still see the ads. Do I still have an infection? Any other tools to try? What about ComboFix? Thanks Update: Here's a screenshot - on superuser

• Ubuntu 10.04 - unable to install Arduino

  Hello! At the moment, I try to install Arduino on my Ubuntu 10.04 (32 Bit) computer. I downloaded the latest release at http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software, cd'ed to the directory and unziped the package. When I try to run ./arduino , I get following error: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError at processing.app.Base.main(Base.java:112) Caused by: java.awt.HeadlessException at sun.awt.HeadlessToolkit.getMenuShortcutKeyMask(HeadlessToolkit.java:231) at processing.core.PApplet.<clinit>(Unknown Source) ... 1 more Here is my java -version output: java version "1.6.0_20" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.5) (6b20-1.9.5-0ubuntu1~10.04.1) OpenJDK Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode) Any suggestions on this? I try to install arduino without the 'arduino' package. I tried to install it with apt-get (sudo apt-get install arduino). • Windows 8.1 killed notebook's wifi

  Was running Windows 8 on a Lenovo G780 and updated to windows 8.1 Wifi does not work anymore, i always receive a dns server not responding error. I have tried using public dns servers from Google but with still no results. I've restarted my router with no results. All other devices on my network are having no trouble at all. I've tried updating the wireless driver but the manufacturers website claims that the Win8.1 driver should be updated with the update from windows. So i cant find a wireless driver... Anyone else having this error and does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?? EDIT: here are the driver details: Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter Provider: Microsoft Driver Date: 2013-05-31 Driver Version: 6.30.223.102 Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Thanks

• Couldn't pass the signin screen

  I have an issue here with my computer using ubuntu 10.10 on a 64 bits machine. When I start it, I have the login screen, I enter my credentials but instead of starting the session it reloads the login screen again. I checked the disc using fsck and it seems clean. How should I proceed to diagnose and repair this issue? Thanks! • Ubuntu web server cluster checks Ubuntu repository for script updates with cron

  I have a cluster of Ubuntu 12.04 web servers running a lamp stack. All of these servers are connected to a Load Balancer on Amazon Web Services. What I want to be able to do is have a dedicated Ubuntu server that I can update the PHP files on and have the other web servers check with cron to get the updates files from the repository. They don't have to use cron but that was the only thing I could think of, unless there was a way to have the updated repository tell them that it has updated files. And then how to transfer those files. Also if there is a ways for a server to check for updated files when it boots because I am going to be using auto scaling on AWS so when there is an increase in the load and another server gets created I need it to download the updated files from the repository when launched. Not sure how to transfer files from server to server.

• Book Review: Getting Started With Window 8 Apps By Ben Dewey

  When O’Reilly gave me an opportunity to review this book I was excited.  It gave me a reason to finally put some time into this new platform and what developers will need to learn in order to be successful. This book by Ben Dewey is only 92 pages long, so if you were looking for an in-depth treatment of Windows 8 development you will need supplemental materials.  It is also due for an update from the perspective of recent changes made by Microsoft prior to the final release of the OS and tools.  This causes a few issues if you try to run the code samples because of namespace changes. I was encouraged by the fact that the author didn’t do the typical “hello world” app.  He uses a lot of pattern based development techniques and hits many of the main topics including: Application lifecycle Charms integration Tiles Sensors The lifecycle is critical for anyone who hasn’t done mobile development before.  Limited resources on these devices mean that the OS can suspend or kill your app altogether if it decides it needs to.  He covers tombstoning which is the key to Windows 8 and Windows Phone lifecycle management. He also dedicates a chapter to marketing and distributing the application you build.  From my experience with Windows Phone development this is crucial information.  You need to know how to test your application so that it is going to pass certification and present your app so that it is going to get noticed amongst thousands of other apps. The main things that I wish had been in the book explanations of more of the common controls and more complete explanation of patterns that were implemented. In the end this book is a good foundation getting exposure to the concepts that underlie this new version of the Windows platform and how it effects developers.  It isn’t a book that I would suggest for someone just getting into development with no understanding of pattern based development. del.icio.us Tags: Windows 8,O'Reilly,Ben Dewey,Book Review,Review

• RAID5 over LVM on Ubuntu Server 12.04.3

  I'm trying to create a RAID5 software array using LVM. I use VirtualBox as I'm only learning how LVM works. So I've created 4 virtual SCSI drives and then did the following: pvcreate /dev/sd[b-e] vgcreate /dev/sd[b-e] raid5_vg lvcreate --type raid5 -i 3 -L 1G -n raid_lv raid5_vg However, I get an error after the last command: WARNING: Unrecognised segment type raid5 Using default stripesize 64.00 KiB Rounding size (256 extents) up to stripe boundary size (258 extents) Cannot update volume group raid5_vg with unknown segments in it! So it looks like raid5 is not a valid segment type. "lvm segtypes" also doesn't contain 'raid5' entry: root@ubuntu-lvm:~# lvm segtypes striped zero error free snapshot mirror So my question is - how could I create RAID5 logical volume using LVM only? It seems that it is possible, I saw a few references (not for Ubuntu, unfortunately) for RedHat and Gentoo systems. I don't want to use mdadm for now, until I find out that it is mandatory. • Unable to authenticate Windows XP clients agains Snow Leopard Server PDC after 10.6.2 upgrade

  I have setup a Snow Leopard Server 10.6.1 as a PDC without problems to authenticate Windows XP clients. Joining a Windows XP client to the SLS PDC Domain and log in from a Windows XP client to the SLS PDC Domain are working. After the update to Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2 the authentication is broken. opendirectory_smb_pwd_check_ntlmv1 gave -14090 [eDSAuthFailed] By changing the Windows XP "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level" policy to NTVLM2 responses only the authentication agains a SMB share is possible, but trying to join SLS PDC Domain is still not possible. opendirectory_smb_pwd_check_ntlmv2 gave -14090 [eDSAuthFailed] Any ideas? Is anyone else having similar authentication difficulties?

  The excess data charges if I go over my tethering data limit are ridiculously. Fennec already stated the question well. Because of this, and on general principle, I'd like to have some tools which permit me to do things like: Monitor the amount of bandwidth that I've used I think I can do this from Sprint too, but on-the-computer is nice too on-the-computer gives me a possibility of breaking it down by application See what sort of programs are using the Internet connection I could use, like, Wireshark, but that's a bit too micro-level to be practical Keep those programs, and the operating system, from doing things like "downloading an operating system update" while on the mobile hotspot Related I want to monitor and limit OS X's data transfer while I'm tethering via my iPhone

  Download Missing Index Script with Unused Index Script Performance Tuning is quite interesting and Index plays a vital role in it. A proper index can improve the performance and a bad index can hamper the performance. Here is the script from my script bank which I use to identify unused indexes on any database. Please note, if you should not drop all the unused indexes this script suggest. This is just for guidance. You should not create more than 5-10 indexes per table. Additionally, this script sometime does not give accurate information so use your common sense. Any way, the scripts is good starting point. You should pay attention to User Scan, User Lookup and User Update when you are going to drop index. The generic understanding is if this values are all high and User Seek is low, the index needs tuning. The index drop script is also provided in the last column. • Microsoft Excel 2010 How to reference a table to another sheet

  I am using Excel 2010. I got a sheet name "March" I would like to duplicate it (with reference / link) to another sheet called "Summary" which included January, Feb, and March. In the summary tab I would add another column called "Month" and will duplicate the value "March" or their tab month. I did some research on it, they said copy and paste special with link, but I can't find it. I need to reference the whole table, just in case any change add / remove the row of the table, the summary still will update it. Is there any solution with this? Thanks!

• What's The Difference Between Imperative, Procedural and Structured Programming?

  By researching around (books, Wikipedia, similar questions on SE, etc) I came to understand that Imperative programming is one of the major programming paradigms, where you describe a series of commands (or statements) for the computer to execute (so you pretty much order it to take specific actions, hence the name "imperative"). So far so good. Procedural programming, on the other hand, is a specific type (or subset) of Imperative programming, where you use procedures (i.e., functions) to describe the commands the computer should perform. First question: Is there an Imperative programming language which is not procedural? In other words, can you have Imperative programming without procedures? Update: This first question seems to be answered. A language CAN be imperative without being procedural or structured. An example is pure Assembly language. Then you also have Structured programming, which seems to be another type (or subset) of Imperative programming, which emerged to remove the reliance on the GOTO statement. Second question: What is the difference between procedural and structured programming? Can you have one without the other, and vice-versa? Can we say procedural programming is a subset of structured programming, as in the image?

• Microsoft VirtualPC installation

  I am trying to run old win16 application. I am running windows 7 x64 SP1. I downloaded VirtualPC from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx Step 2 and Step 3. During installation of Windows Virtual PC i am having error in event log: {Cannot install widnows update because of error} 2149842967 "" (Command Line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Users\Sergey\Downloads\Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg (1).msu" Text in { } is approximate translation from russian to english. When i try to run "Windows XP Mode", it says: Cannot launch main process Windows Virutual PC When i click "Windows Virtual PC" it shows empty folder. Any ideas?

• Nagios orphaned services warnings

  We have had Nagios running on one of our servers with out any problems for a while but lately certain old service warning have been reappearing and then disappearing on the service detail page. From looking at the logs I found warning like the following. Warning: The check of service 'Tomcat' on host 'virtual1' looks like it was orphaned (results never came back). I'm scheduling an immediate check of the service... Has anyone ever came across this before or at least know a way to delete the old Orphaned Warnings. The Nagios Version we are running is Version 3.0b7 so an update might be in order. Thanks.

  As a side project I've been attempting to make a dynamic display (for example a screen within a game) that shows images from my webcam. I've been messing around with JavaCV and LWJGL for the past few months and have a basic understanding of how they both work. I found this after scouring google, but I get an error that the ByteBuffer isn't big enough. • Macbook Pro suddenly lagging video playback + Flash sites

  I have a Macbook Pro, OSx Lion, Intel Core2 Duo, 4GB Ram, NVidia Geforce 8600M GT 128 MB Ram, Intel x25m SSD. Approximately 4 years old. I've been running Flash sites and playing videos without any problems for years. Then suddenly 3 months ago, a flash site like http://thefwa.com is lagging in all browsers. Even mouseover animations - anything. Also video playback in e.g VLC and Quicktime is now lagging. Same videos I used before, I tried installing an older version of VLC without any luck. Playing back video in VLC utilizes the CPU almost 100%, and Flash sites like thefwa.com easily takes up 50-60%. It's as if the hardware acceleration stopped working, or the GPU lost its magic. UPDATE: Same issues also occurred on Snow Leopard Has anyone experienced something similar, or do you know what might be wrong?

• Oracle Solaris 11.1 Announced at Oracle OpenWorld

  One of the highlights for me at Oracle OpenWorld was our announcement of the next update version to Oracle Solaris 11, named Oracle Solaris 11.1. Since November 2011, we've done a lot of work not only to polish existing features and fix literally hundreds of bugs, but also add many new features that give yet more reasons for using Oracle Solaris as the deployment platform for Oracle workloads - particularly the Oracle database. Over the last few years since the Sun Microsystems acquisition, we've had our developers sitting in Redwood Shores with the Oracle database team figuring out how to best optimize that combination and provide a level of integration that no other vendor (or solution) can match. Oracle Solaris 11.1 is often the first release many customers will adopt due to perceived instability of '.0' releases. In reality, however, we've seen incredible adoption already and all our existing customers are loving the new technologies like Image Packaging System (IPS), Automated Installer and ZFS Boot Environments, consolidated network management and network virtualization, and of course the existing features that are so critical to creating private, hybrid or public cloud environments like the Oracle Solaris ZFS file system and Oracle Solaris Zones server virtualization. If you haven't already gotten on board, there's plenty chance to catch up. More importantly, Oracle Solaris 11.1 really provides a platform that is significantly easier to manage than any previous Solaris releases - to the extent that it should be relatively straightforward for any experienced Linux administrator to get up to speed (if they're struggling, we have ways to help). • Wireless network not working Linux Mint

  I have a home LAN that I am confident is working properly (I have a Windows 7 and an Ubuntu Desktop machine that both see the router and a working Internet connection). I just installed Linux Mint (Maya) on a new machine and although I can connect to the Internet via a wired (ethernet) connection, it does not see my wireless network. In fact, as you can see in the screenshot below, it doesn't even look like it has the drivers to be able to detect a wireless network... I have ran update manager and made sure that I am up-to-date with everything and have restarted. Any ideas here?!?
