• Issues with nVidia GeForce 210 while watching movies

  Ever since 10.04 I have been trying to resolve an issue with my graphics card - nVidia GeForce 210. I'm having issues when I watch movies - they are jumping all the time, even with Compiz disabled and when that is the only thing I am doing. I have tried the solution to How to get NVidia GeForce GT 210 drivers working on Lucid Lynx? but it didn't work. How can I fix this? Here are the steps I took: apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau edit /etc/default/grub to add the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.modeset=0" sudo update-grub Reboot Download official Linux drivers from nVidia site. sh filename-of-downloaded-driver-package

• Using components in the XNA Game State Management example?

  In the game state management example at the App Hub, they say that if you want to use components in the example you can extend the GameScreen to host other components inside itself. I'm having a very hard time trying to tie this up. I tried extending the GameScreen class by adding a public property of public List<DrawableGameCompnent> components { get; set; } and then add my components to that list when I initialize the current screen as well as looping over the components in the LoadContent, Update and Draw methods. However, this doesn't feel like the correct way to go - mainly because it doesn't work when I get to the implementation of my GameplayScreen. Any thoughts?

• Why ubuntu 13.10 always show "access prompt" when start?

  After my Ubuntu PC update from 13.04 to 13.10, when start up, an access prompt always show and ask me password for "[email protected]". I was input password for email or another services, which registed with "[email protected]", but it's still "incorect". I can close but next time, it appears again. It never appeared before 13.10. • Service Layer - how broad should it be, and should it also be on the local application?

  Background: I need to build a desktop application with some operations (CRUD and more) (=winforms), I need to make another application which will re-use some of the functions of the main application (=webforms). I understood that using service layer is the best approach here. If I understood correctly the service should be calling the function on the BL layer (correct me if I'm wrong) The dilemma: In my main winform UI - should I call the functions from the BL, or from the service? (please explain why) Should I create a service for every single function on the BL even if I need some of the functions only in one UI? for example - should I create services for all the CRUD operations, even though I need to re-use only update operation in the webform?   I've installed Lubuntu 13.04 on my notebook. (It's the first time I use Lubuntu) I had graphical issue, apparently due to the graphic driver (ATI Radeon Xpress 1200) I followed this procedure to correct my problem : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:makson96 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install fglrx-legacy My graphical issue has been corrected but now it shows a low resolution (1024*768) and I can't change it. the xrandr result : xrandr: failed to get size of gamma output default Screen 0: minimum 1024x768, current 1027x768, maximum 1024x768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mmx0mm 1024x768 0.0* I've already read this topic but I don't really understand how things work there. For example, there are reports that Google Analytics may take up to 24h to update data. That is not acceptable. Querying doesn't need to be fast, but recording does (of course). • HDMI Audio stops after TV turned off

  After the 12.04 Update my HDMI audio stops working anytime I turn off my 2nd monitor(plasma TV). Graphics card is a Radeon 6800 which has DVI out to 1st monitor, HDMI out to receiver which the TV gets it's Audio/Video. Audio is always via my receiver sound. Things work fine as long as it boots with the TV and Receiver on. Turn off the TV and BART's HDMI audio will go away, and the HDMI option vanishes from the sound menu. I had an occasional HDMI issue with 11.10 but turning on/off the TV would fix the sound. How can I hardcode things so that it always uses HDMI out of audio? I suspect the TV is sending a signal upon that 12.04 is now listening for. Turning the TV back on does NOT resolve this, and I'd suggest having the ability to override this new "feature" via sound menu.

  I am looking for a book about the Unix command-line toolkit (sh, grep, sed, awk, cut, etc.) that I read some time ago. It was an excellent book, but I totally forgot its name. The great thing about this specific book was the running example. It showed how to implement a university bookkeeping system using only text-processing tools. You would find a student by name with grep, update grades with sed, calculate average grades with awk, attach grades to IDs with cut, and so on. If my memory serve, this book had a black cover, and was published circa 1980. Does anyone remember this book? I would appreciate any help in finding it.

• AMD 6870 Twin Frozr II video adapter issues

  Hardware: AMD 6870 Twin Frozr II (1GB), ASUS 990 chipset Software: Ubuntu 11.10 Built a new PC from scratch, loaded it with Ubuntu 11.10. It's displaying, but with poor resolution, unable to change, as it says no drivers are installed. Ubuntu indicates that there are 2 proprietary drivers available to download: ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX Graphics driver (Post-release update) ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX Graphics driver The first won't even finish downloading. The second downloads and installs, but when I restart the PC as requested it boots up, I see purple in the background, then the video feed just stops with a black screen. I can still hear ubuntu boot up though. It seems like I just need the latest drivers, googled around and not had much luck. I'm pretty new with Ubuntu, but have basic knowledge. Any potentially helpful information would be welcome.

Extensions, and disabled the Sound Menu Integration, but this does not seem to stop notifications.

• Useful versioning scheme for a git project?

  I have a small github project, which I need to add an option to to output some version number on the commandline. The problem is I have no idea how to "compute" the version number. Is this some random process? Should I just start at 1.0 (probably creating a tag or something), and put a number after . for fixes? I know this question is a bit vague... I just had never to deal with this, and want to use some sane versioning scheme. EDIT Im also interested into how to update this version number automatically, maybe using something like a git hook.

• Which other "photo booth" program can I use besides cheese (on a Toshiba AC100)?

  After installing Ubuntu 12.04 on a Toshiba AC100 several days ago, as described at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/TEGRA/AC100, and seeing during the installation that the OS was able to use the camera (the installer suggested to make a photo for the first user), I wanted to play with the camera. I couldn't understand how to find a "photo booth" program in the new-style menu+desktop (not the classical menu with sections), so I remembered the popular "cheese" Linux program, and installed it via the Software Update tool (or whatever it is called; can be invoked from the panel on the desktop). But cheese doesn't start, i.e., it crashes. (The bug report telling the same.) As I said, the camera could be used by the OS on this machine -- this could be seen in the installer. Which "photo booth" programs can be installed and used without crashes in Ubuntu 12.04 on a Toshiba AC100 in order to play with the webcamera?

  The installation media ISO for Oracle Linux 6.3 is still "in the oven" but the RPMs are already available.  You can grab them on ULN, if you have an Oracle Linux support subscription, or anyone can get them from public-yum.oracle.com.  Oracle Linux 6.3 includes a quarterly update of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 2 (kernel-uek-2.6.39-200.9.0.el6uek).  To install that kernel, make sure you have the ol6_UEK_latest channel or repo enabled.  Enjoy.

  Today I got an brand new Dell XPS 13 and I really like it. Wifi/Bluetooth/Brightness works very well. But only the Touchpad makes me insane. Okay, Multitouch is really nice and i love it on my Macbook but... i must click to click. How can I set up that is an "touch" to click? Its makes me insane. click, click, click.. Can I configure it? The latest ones are short teasers coming from the JavaBin folks to promote their very fine JavaZone conference in Oslo, Norway in September (celebrating their 10th anniversary). Update: the entire trailer is now available. Previous videos include Lady java and Java 4 Ever (must see if you somehow missed them). The inspiration for these may have come from the JavaPolis (now Devoxx) 2006 "There are better ways to meet your idols" trailer. IIRC, James Gosling was quoted saying "This is sick, I love it!". • How do you go about checking your open source libraries for keystroke loggers?

  A random person on the internet told me that a technology was secure(1), safe to use and didn't contain keyloggers because it is open source. While I can trivially detect the key stroke logger in this open source application, what can developers(2) do to protect themselves against rouge committers to open source projects? Doing a back of the envelope threat analysis, if I were a rogue developer, I'd fork a branch on git and promote it's download since it would have twitter support (and a secret key stroke logger). If it was an SVN repo, I'd create just create a new project. Even better would be to put the malicious code in the automatic update routines. (1) I won't mention which because I can only deal with one kind of zealot at a time. (2) Ordinary users are at the mercy of their virus and malware detection software-- it's absurd to expect grandma to read the source of code of their open source word processor's source code to find the keystroke logger.

• Why has wireless disappeared after my 12.10 upgrade?

  I just upgraded to 12.10 on my Lenovo B570 laptop. NetworkManager isn't displaying a submenu for wireless connections at all, even though I downloaded the update through the wireless connection. This displeases me. Stuff I've tried includes: $ sudo modprobe wl FATAL: Module wl not found. $ sudo lspci -nn | grep "BCM" 02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4727] (rev 01) $ rfkill list all 0: ideapad_wlan: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no ETA: linux-headers-generic is already the newest version, and what I get when reinstalling bcmwl-kernel-source includes the following, near the end.   E-Business Suite 11.5.10 Sustaining Support Exception & 12.1 Extended Support Now to Dec. 2018 [ID 1495337.1] As part of Oracle’s continued commitment to our customers, we will be providing an exception for the first 13 months of Sustaining Support on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (11i10), valid from December 1, 2013 – December 31, 2014. This exception support will be comprised of three components: (1) new fixes for Severity 1 production issues, (2) United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates, and (3) payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014.  In addition, the Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended through December, 2018. Customers with an active Oracle Premier Support for Software contract will automatically be entitled to Extended Support deliverables for E-Business Suite 12.1. • Is it Considered Good SQL practice to use GUID to link multiple tables to same Id field?

  I want to link several tables to a many-to-many(m2m) table. One table would be called location and this table would always be on one side of the m2m table. But I will have a list of several tables for example: Cards Photographs Illustrations Vectors Would using GUID's between these tables to link it to a single column in another table be considered 'Good Practice'? Will Mysql let me to have it automatically cascade updates and delete? If so, would multiple cascades lead to an issues? UPDATE I've read that GUID (a hex number) Generally takes up more space in a database and slows queries down. However I could still generate 'unique' ids by just having the table initial's as part of the id so that the table card's id would be c0001, and then Illustrations be I001. Regardless of this change, the questions still stands.

• I'm getting a black screen right after Install Ubuntu option on GRUB menu. Any ideas?

  I've formatted my USB and remade the live USB twice. I tried editing editing the commands (pressing the 'e' key while the command was highlighted on the GRUB menu) by 1. deleting quiet splash and replacing it with nomodeset 2. adding nomodeset right before quiet splash 3. deleting quiet splash and adding radeon.modeset=0 I saw another solution for a fix by editing GRUB but in command line 'sudo' 'nano' and 'update-grub' all show up as unknown commands. I'm brand new to Ubuntu, in case you couldn't tell. I would appreciate any help you could give me. I want to convince my brother that Ubuntu is a better option than iOS but I can't do that if I can't install it. If you need more information, please ask. I'm not dual booting. I want this to be a full install. Thanks.
