  Crosstalk once again exceeded my expectations, improving upon last year's conference in terms of venue, knowledge sharing, and entertainment.  Its great to see the Oracle Retail family continues to grow, especially outside the US.  I had a great time talking to retailers, analysts, press, and colleagues from around the world. Because the economy, demographics, technology, etc. are constantly changing, retailers must always be evolving their business to capture the next market.  But it takes guts to change something that appears to be working, and it takes a bit of luck to get the timing right.  To a large extent, innovation is about "guts and luck." To help retailers innovate, Oracle Retail provides all the necessary software to create Your Experience Platform.  There is no "Oracle Experience Platform" as each retailer needs something different to deliver on their brand promise.  We provide the actionable insight, optimized operations, and connected interactions, but its still up to the retailer to make it theirs. One such retailer is Masters, a home improvement retailer in Australia formed through a partnership between Woolworths and Lowes.  Woolworths is an established retailer in Australia, so they are already close to their customers and able to understand their needs.  In Australia 74% of dwellings are detached houses and the population is continues to "move up" into bigger and bigger homes.   Have you ever been challenged with the situation where your work task asks you to implement functionality in the WebCenter Portal and you browse through the Resource Catalog (Business Dictionary) and find the functionality you need. However when you get started there is small short comings and you ask your self- how can I re-use what is out of the box ca?- I wonder what code I need to use to produce the similar functions and include my new requirements?- Must I write a new taskflow? The answer to above questions are in many times answered with simply you can  do a taskflow customization to out-of-the-box taskflows. In this post I will help you understand how to do such customization. Best described is a 4 step process, see image flow below for illustration: Just to clarify few naming confusions that might occur when go through above process. • DB API for shell scripting (any shell)

  I am faced with some legacy shell scripts that run batch data processing jobs in Oracle using SQL+. For the most part, the data tier does not have to communicate back to the script with retrieved data to be passed for shell-level processing but in a few cases it does. The problem is, SQL+ is really meant to be an end user app and not an API that can communicate with other clients programmaticaly. That is why people have invented APIs such as DBD::DBI for Perl, JDBC for Java, ODBC etc. The way it is done is they invoke SQL+ and then parse the output, which is clearly designed for human eye consumption, using tools like sed and awk. The whole thing is at best a hack and very prone to bugs. Since this client is rather conservative with their technology, they don't want to scale their scripts up to Perl or Python where there are data access APIs. So I am wondering whether there are similar APIs for shell, e.g. K or bash. What I would like is if an API would return data in a 2-dimensional array or strings (for the lack of type setting) so that I can just read DB data like that. The way they do it now is akin to parsing regular web page HTML to get a single stock quote rather than cleanly calling a web service and be done with it. Anybody know of a product I can use? Thanks

• Second monitor not detected

  Note: I've seen this question quite a lot, but in all the cases I could find with answers, the answer was either "I don't know" or "use nvidia-settings (which is irrelevant to me)." I'm using Intel Sandybridge Desktop graphics, with a P8H61-M LE motherboard. How do I get Ubuntu to detect my second monitor? Clicking "Detect Displays" here doesn't do anything. • SAP or Navision? Career Path

  This could be tricky to ask; I may or may not ask this question here but I thought to give it a try. I've been in Software Industry since 2002 and now it has been a time that I'm at Senior level where I normally code, lead and define the architect; giving technical solutions to the management is one of my asset that I've earned during my services. Now it is the time to define the road map for the future, $$$. I am not in favor of Project Management roles. I've been thinking of going through the ERP and my current company does provide me an option to go for Navision/ Microsoft Dynamics. They are currently on 4.0 but they are planning to move for 2009 and also to build one of their own plug-in. Indeed the option is good because Microsoft is trying to accomplish the market for Dynamics products. However, they have less success in Australia. Now, Another option is with SAP where person can go with 200 K $ a year. Where as I'd doubt that if the same kind of growth, financial, is available for Microsoft geek. What is your opinion on Navision or SAP? If I try to completely move to SAP it could be bit challenging as market will consider me a fresher. However the return is quite good. Where in case of Microsoft, I think technology changes so fast that there is a less chance to grow in, within, the same experience; in other word, if any new framework comes in .net then market look for that person who knows this new framework and not .net But in case of SAP, where the base remain same and chances are to grab more money from the market. • NRF Big Show 2011 -- Part 1

  When Apple decided to open retail stores, they came to 360Commerce (now part of Oracle Retail) to help with the secret project. Similarly, when Disney Stores decided to reinvent itself, they also came to us for their POS system. In both cases visiting a store is an experience where sales take a backseat to entertainment, exploration, and engagement This quote from a recent Stores Magazine article says it all: "We compete based on an experience, emotion and immersion like Disney," says Neal Lassila, vice president of global information technology for Disney. "That's opposed to [competing] on price and hawking a doll for $19.99. There is no sales pressure technique." Instead, it's about delivering "a great time." While you're attending the NRF conference in New York next week, you'll definitely want to stop by the new 20,000 square-foot Disney store in Times Square. If you're not attending, you can always check out the videos to get a feel for the stores' vibe. This year we've invited Disney Stores to open a pop-up store within the Oracle Retail booth. There will be lots of items on sale that fit in your suitcase, and there's no better way to demonstrate our POS, including the mobile POS running on an iPod Touch. You should also plan to attend Tuesday morning's super-session The Magic of the Disney Store: An Immersive Retail Experience with Steve Finney. In the case of Apple and Disney, less POS is actually a good thing. In both cases it was important to make the checkout process fast and easy so as not to detract from the overall experience. • Leveraging Code in Ever Bigger Games

  Summary: The same way that I continually build complex engines and libraries within a single platform and technology to allow me to build increasingly bigger and better games, how to continue this when development crosses into different platforms? If I switch platforms, how do I leverage past code and experiences? Games are hard to build. Big games are even harder to build. I've decided that to be able to make big games, I need to start building smaller games, and building up an asset base of code, assets (graphics, sounds), tools, and most importantly, game engines, so that I can eventually get there. One game at a time. Let me give an analogy. To build an MMO 3D RPG, I would approach this by building and releasing small games with increasingly more features. This could entail, for example: A simple 2D game A tile-based game A game with RPG elements (items, equipment, monsters, battle) A full-fledged RPG A 3D RPG The problem now is if I have to change platforms or tools, I don't know how to leverage past code-bases (and experience) to start with a mature product. Right now, I'm writing Silverlight (FlatRedBall) games. Let's say I stick with this for ten years, and then suddenly decide to write a PS6 game, which is in a different programming language entirely. Granted, I have ten years of game-development experience (and correspondingly ten years of professional software development experience from my day job) to back me up. But I would still like some way to transplant that 2D RPG engine into the new programming language, or else leverage it somehow. Is this even possible? What are my options?

  What happens if you try to upgrade a machine from MS-DOS to Windows 7? One curious geek ran the experiment using VMWare and recorded the whole, surprisingly fluid, ride for our enjoyment. Andrew Tait was curious, what would happen if you followed the entire upgrade arc for Windows from the 1980s to the present all on one machine? Thanks to VMWare he was able to find out, following the upgrade path all the way from MS-DOS to Windows 7. • Java EE 7 JSR Submitted

  Java EE 7 has been filed as JSR 342 in the JCP program. This JSR (Java Specification Request) will develop Java EE 7, the next version of the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition. It is an "umbrella JSR" because the specification includes a collection of several other JSRs. The proposal suggests the addition of two new JSRs: Concurrency Utilities for Java EE (JSR-236) and JCache (JSR-107) as well as updates to JPA, JAX-RS, JSF, Servlets, EJB, JSP, EL, JMS, JAX-WS, CDI, Bean Validation, JSR-330, JSR-250, and Java Connector Architecture. There are also two new APIs under discussion: a Java Web Sockets API and a Java JSON API. These are the new JSRs that are currently up for ballot:• JSR 342: Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 7 Specification• JSR 340: Java Servlet 3.1 Specification• JSR 341: Expression Language 3.0• JSR 343: Java Message Service 2.0• JSR 344: JavaServer Faces 2.2All 5 JSRs are now up for Executive Committee voting with ballots closing on 14 March, and slated for inclusion in Java EE  7.  All of these JSRs are also open for Expert Group nominations. Any JCP member can nominate themself to serve on the Expert Groups for these JSRs. Details on how to become a JCP member are on jcp.org. The JCP gives you a chance to have your own work become an official component of the Java platform and to offer suggestions for improving and growing the technology. • What's a "Cloud Operating System"?

  What's a "Cloud Operating System"? Oracle's recently introduced Solaris 11 has been touted as "The First Cloud OS". Interesting claim, but what exactly does it mean? To answer that, we need to recall what characteristics define a cloud and then see how Solaris 11's capabilities map to those characteristics. By now, most cloud computing professionals have at least heard of, if not adopted, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Definition of Cloud Computing, including its vocabulary and conceptual architecture. NIST says that cloud computing includes these five characteristics: On-demand self-service Broad network access Resource pooling Rapid elasticity Measured service How does Solaris 11 support these capabilities? Well, one of the key enabling technologies for cloud computing is virtualization, and Solaris 11 along with Oracle's SPARC and x86 hardware offerings provides the full range of virtualization technologies including dynamic hardware domains, hypervisors for both x86 and SPARC systems, and efficient non-hypervisor workload virtualization with containers. This provides the elasticity needed for cloud systems by supporting on-demand creation and resizing of application environments; it supports the safe partitioning of cloud systems into multi-tenant infrastructures, adding resources as needed and deprovisioning computing resources when no longer needed, allowing for pay-only-for-usage chargeback models. For cloud computing developers, add to that the next generation of Java, and you've got the NIST requirements covered. The results, or one of them anyway, are services like the new Oracle Public Cloud. And Solaris is the ideal platform for running your Java applications. So, if you want to develop for cloud computing, for IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS, start with an operating system designed to support cloud's key requirements…start with Solaris 11.
