After upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04 I am trying to install different packages. For instance ia32-libs and skype (4.0). When trying to install these, I am getting the 'Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages' error message. Output of commands: sudo apt-get install -f Reading package lists... How do I grep in a variable?

How to do a grep in a variable? I have stored the wget output in a variable and I need to extract out some strings from it. Like the content of the variable is upgrade http://wordpress.org/download/ http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.0.5.zip 3.0.5 en_US 4.3 4.1.2 I need to check if the string contains the word upgrade, so I can do a simple grep and then check the exit status of it by $? and proceed. But how can I get the value 3.0.5 which is actually the fourth word? And how to actually grep in a variable?

Useful versioning scheme for a git project?

I have a small github project, which I need to add an option to to output some version number on the commandline. The problem is I have no idea how to "compute" the version number. Is this some random process? Should I just start at 1.0 (probably creating a tag or something), and put a number after . for fixes? I know this question is a bit vague... I just had never to deal with this, and want to use some sane versioning scheme. EDIT Im also interested into how to update this version number automatically, maybe using something like a git hook.

Sound works for only one user at a time

I've noticed that sound becomes unavailable to me when someone else is logged into my machine and playing music (or has facebook open) in the other account. I've had to ask them to unlock their account and turn it off so I can get sound in my own stuff. Even in sound preferences, the hardware itself disappears and output is "dummy sound". Is there a way to prevent this from happening? What would be really good is if I could turn down the volume (or mute entirely) all the sounds on all other accounts on a per-user basis from my sound preferences without affecting whatever setting they have - essentially saying whenever user A is logged in, all sounds from user B's account are muted and anything from user C's account is at 50% while I can still have my own at full volume.

"Super meatboy"-ish replay

I'm making a platformer built from mini-levels - and I want to create a sort of a replay of all the player tries that the player did for the level. My question is - what is the best way to record the player's actions in-game, so that I could replay them later when he finishes the level. I thought about recording only the player's input and replay them later on, each on a clone of the player. The problem I have with this is with dynamic obstacles (that could be moved around) - if one clone moves them, it throws the simulation off for the rest of the clones. So then I thought about recording every frame the X/Y of the player, and then just replay it - but that seems it could cause a major memory leak and very ineffective. So - does anyone have any ideas? :)

How You Helped Shape Java EE 7...

I have been working with the JCP in various roles since EJB 3/Java EE 5 (much of it on my own time), eventually culminating in my decision to accept my current role at Oracle (despite it's inevitable set of unique challenges, a role I find by and large positive and fulfilling). During these years, it has always been clear to me that pretty much everyone in the JCP genuinely cares about openness, feedback and developer participation. Perhaps the most visible sign to date of this high regard for grassroots level input is a survey on Java EE 7 gathered a few months ago. The survey was designed to get open feedback on a number of critical issues central to the Java EE 7 umbrella specification including what APIs to include in the standard. When we started the survey, I don't think anyone was certain what the level of participation from developers would really be. I also think everyone was pleasantly surprised that a large number of developers (around 1100) took the time out to vote on these very important issues that could impact their own professional life. And it wasn't just a matter of the quantity of responses. I was particularly impressed with the quality of the comments made through the survey (some of which I'll try to do justice to below). With Java EE 7 under our belt and the horizons for Java EE 8 emerging, this is a good time to thank everyone that took the survey once again for their thoughts and let you know what the impact of your voice actually was. As an aside, you may be happy to know that we are working hard behind the scenes to try to put together a similar survey to help kick off the agenda for Java EE 8 (although this is by no means certain). I'll break things down by the questions asked in the survey, the responses and the resulting change in the specification. APIs to Add to Java EE 7 Full/Web Profile The first question in the survey asked which of four new candidate APIs (WebSocket, JSON-P, JBatch and JCache) should be added to the Java EE 7 Full and Web profile respectively. Developers by and large wanted all the new APIs added to the full platform. The comments expressed particularly strong support for WebSocket and JCache. Others expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of a JSON binding (as opposed to JSON processing) API. WebSocket, JSON-P and JBatch are now part of Java EE 7. In addition, the long-awaited Java EE Concurrency Utilities API was also included in the Full Profile. Unfortunately, JCache was not finalized in time for Java EE 7 and the decision was made not to hold up the Java EE release any longer. JCache continues to move forward strongly and will very likely be included in Java EE 8 (it will be available much sooner than Java EE 8 to boot). An emergent standard for JSON-B is also a strong possibility for Java EE 8. When it came to the Web Profile, developers were supportive of adding WebSocket and JSON-P, but not JBatch and JCache. Both WebSocket and JSON-P are now part of the Web Profile, now also including the already popular JAX-RS API. Enabling CDI by Default The second question asked whether CDI should be enabled in Java EE by default. The overwhelming majority of developers supported the default enablement of CDI. In addition, developers expressed a desire for better CDI/Java EE alignment (with regards to EJB and JSF in particular). Some developers expressed legitimate concerns over the performance implications of enabling CDI globally as well as the potential conflict with other JSR 330 implementations like Spring and Guice. CDI is enabled by default in Java EE 7. Respecting the legitimate concerns, CDI 1.1 was very careful to add additional controls around component scanning. While a lot of work was done in Java EE 6 and Java EE 7 around CDI alignment, further alignment is under serious consideration for Java EE 8. Consistent Usage of @Inject The third question was around using CDI/JSR 330 @Inject consistently vs. allowing JSRs to create their own injection annotations (e.g. @BatchContext). A majority of developers wanted consistent usage of @Inject. The comments again reflected a strong desire for CDI/Java EE alignment. A lot of emphasis in Java EE 7 was put into using @Inject consistently. For example, the JBatch specification is focused on using @Inject wherever possible. JAX-RS remains an exception with it's existing custom injection annotations. However, the JAX-RS specification leads understand the importance of eventual convergence, hopefully in Java EE 8. Expanding the Use of @Stereotype The fourth question was about expanding CDI @Stereotype to cover annotations across Java EE beyond just CDI. A solid majority of developers supported the idea of making @Stereotype more universal in Java EE. The comments maintained the general theme of strong support for CDI/Java EE alignment Unfortunately, there was not enough time and resources in Java EE 7 to implement this fairly pervasive feature. However, it remains a serious consideration for Java EE 8. Expanding Interceptor Use The final set of questions was about expanding interceptors further across Java EE. Developers strongly supported the concept. Along with injection, interceptors are now supported across all Java EE 7 components including Servlets, Filters, Listeners, JAX-WS endpoints, JAX-RS resources, WebSocket endpoints and so on. I hope you are encouraged by how your input to the survey helped shape Java EE 7 and continues to shape Java EE 8. Participating in these sorts of surveys is of course just one way of contributing to Java EE. Another great way to stay involved is the Adopt-A-JSR Program. A large number of developers are already participating through their local JUGs. You could of course become a Java EE JSR expert group member or observer. How to reduce the size of a pdf file?

I'm looking for a way in Ubuntu to reduce the size of a pdf (by reducing the quality of the images). I know that this can be done in Ghostscript by typing the following command in terminal: gs -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dPDFSETTINGS=/screen -dNOPAUSE -dQUIET -dBATCH -sOutputFile=output.pdf input.pdf The problem is that I can't specify the quality with any accuracy. The parameter -dPDFSETTINGS=/screen is the one that decides the quality; but the alternatives are quite rigid (for example it is possible to do -dPDFSETTINGS=/ebook for slightly better quality). I'm looking for a way to reduce the size of a pdf in a way that allows me to specify the desired quality numerically. I know that this is possible in a Mac, so it must be possible in Linux -- right? Any help would be well appreciated.

What does /dev/null mean in the shell?

I've started learning bash scripting by using this guide: http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/abs-guide.pdf However I got stuck at the first script: cd /var/log cat /dev/null > messages cat /dev/null > wtmp echo "Log files cleaned up." What do lines 2 and 3 do in Ubuntu (I understand cat)? Is it only for other Linux distributions? After running this script as root, the output I get is Log files cleaned up. But /var/log still contains all the files.

Can't mount data DVD using 12.04

I cannot mount a data DVD using Ubuntu 12.04. I can read the DVD using a different OS, so the DVD is not the problem. I can read other CDs using Ubuntu. run .profile function as cron job

In the .profile file of the root user I have defined a function, e.g. function printDate() { date } I want to run this function every minute and append the output to cron.log. I tried adding the following crontab entry: * * * * * printDate > $HOME/cron.log 2>&1 But it doesn't work. The cron.log file gets created, but it's empty. I guess this is because the .profile isn't read by cron, so any functions/aliases defined therein are unavailable to it. So I tried changing the crontab entry to: * * * * * source $HOME/.profile;printDate >> $HOME/cron.log 2>&1 But this doesn't work either. It seems cron still doesn't have access to the printDate function because I see the following in cron.log /bin/sh: printDate: not found

How do I set a system wide proxy?

I'm trying to set a system wide proxy, and I'm specifically having difficulties with apt-get for installing applications on my Ubuntu. I'm in a university using a proxy server with username/password. I'm aware of setting a proxy with username and password in the following manner: http://username:[email protected]:8080/ But it fails, as a critical example with apt-get. Username contains backslash( \ ) in it and I'm wondering whether that could be a problem for failing. I'd be grateful with any input on this. P.S I'm on Ubuntu 11.04

I often use the following construct for building and installing a tarball: sudo -v && make && sudo make install which will allow me to enter my password immediately and have everything done unattended. This works well except in the rare case that building takes longer than the sudo timeout, which may happen on my rather slow machine with large projects (even when using make -j4). But when the build takes a long time, that's exactly when doing things unattended has a great advantage. Can anyone think of a shell construct that allows me to input my password immediately, and which has make executing under normal permissions and make install under elevated permissions? For security reasons, I don't want to configure my user to use sudo without password. A viable option is to set the timeout to very long, but I'm hoping for something more elegant.

Running a startup program in terminal as sudo

I need to run a python script in a terminal, myscript.py at startup (on Lubunt). This script requires root. I've setup a .desktop file that runs the following command: lxterminal --command="python /home/d/Jarvis/alarm.py && /bin/bash" The terminal window opens at startup and runs the script, but then closes when the Python script returns an error (because it's not being run as root). When I change the Exec= to this... lxterminal --command="sudo python /home/d/Jarvis/alarm.py && /bin/bash" ... (prefixing command with 'sudo') which works. However, the terminal opens on startup and displays the [sudo] password for d: \ prompt, requiring me to input my password. I would like the execution of the python script at startup to be completely automatic with no user interaction. How can I accomplish this?

Keyboard freezes when xorg crashes

Situation is like that. Many times has happened that Xorg freezes and with it also keyboard. Quite some times because of some Compiz effects or Flash (fullscreen switch). Keyboard becomes totaly unresponsive, while mouse still works (I can move cursor, but can't click since desktop freezes) and music still plays and I can connect trough ssh. This is the only way I know I can try to solve problem - either by killing browser&flash or lastly restarting xorg server. This problem appears on more than one Ubuntu computer. My home dekstop with proprietery nvidia driver, on my work where I use noveau driever (opensource driver for geforce) and sometimes (but rarely) also on laptop with ATI graphics (using r300g driver which is really good!). Can someone explains why mouse still works while I can't input from keyboard? (I can't switch to virtual console or do R-E-I-S-U-B command) I have USB keyboard and USB mouse.

Can I use GPL software in a commercial application

I have 3 questions about the GPL here: If I use GPL software in my application, but don't modify or distribute it, do I have to release my application under the GPL? What if I modify some software that my application uses. Then do I have to release my application under the GPL, or can I just supply the modified software under the GPLs terms. And what if I use GPL software, but don't modify it, can I distribute it with my application? My case in point is, I have a PHP framework which I use the GeSHi library to highlight some output. Because GeSHi is GPL, does my framework have to be GPL? Can I modify GeSHi for particular use cases of my application if I supply the modifications back to the GeSHi maintainers? Can I redistribute my framework with GeSHi?

Quote from Wikipedia Starting from scratch I'm starting from scratch with a project that I recently finished because I found the code to be too tightly coupled and hard to refactor, even when using MVC. I will be using MVC on my new project aswell but want to try and avoid the pitfalls this time, hopefully with your help. Project summary My issue is that I really wish to keep the Controller as clean as possible, but it seems like I can't do this. The basic idea of the program is that the user picks wordlists which is sent to the game engine. It will pick random words from the lists until there are none left. Problem at hand My main problem is that the game will have 'modes', and need to check the input in different ways through a method called checkWord(), but exactly where to put this and how to abstract it properly is a challenge to me. I'm new to design patterns, so not sure whether there exist any might fit my problem. My own attempt at abstraction Here is what I've gotten so far after hours of 'refactoring' the design plans, and I know it's long, but it's the best I could do to try and give you an overview (Note: As this is the sketch, anything is subject to change, all help and advice is very welcome. If object A needs info from object B, how is it supposed to get this without losing too much cohesion? As suggested in the comments, models should hold all business logic. However, as objects should be independent, where to glue them together? Should the model contain some sort of "index" or "client" area which connects the dots? Edit: So basically what I should do for a start is to make a new model which I can more easily call with oneliners such as $model->doAction(); // Lots of code in here which uses classes! How about the method for checking words? Should it be it's own object? I'm not sure where I should put it as it's pretty much part of the 'game'. But on another hand, I could just leave out the 'abstraction and OOPness' and make it a method of the 'client model' which will be encapsulated from the controller anyway. Very unsure about this.

How do I play 3 different music tracks at the same time on my computer, such that song1 is played in speaker1, song2 in speaker2... Is this possible programatically? What additional hardware will I need? Do I need 3 seperate sound cards? Given that the hardware is in place, how would I "route" the sound output for a particular song to a particular speaker. Alternatively, is there a special hardware that can handle multiple inputs and outputs? Appreciate your expert opinions.

I need to manually install the drivers for my graphics card, which is an ATI 2600 xt. But I am using a 64-bit platform and to do so i need the ia32-libs package. i have scoured the net for fixes, workarounds etc. but have found none that work. the output i get after trying apt-get is: Reading package lists... What's shell script's advantage over interpreted programming languages?

(I'm not sure if it's a appropriate question here) Shell script, like bash, can do many things. It can call Unix programs, pipe their output, redirect I/O from/to files, control flow, check whether a file exists, etc. But a modern programming language, e.g, python and ruby, can also do these all. And their are (I think) more readable and maintainable. bash is worldwide spreaded. But many distributions have installed python interpreter, too. So what's the advantage of shell script? If I could write python, ruby or perl, is it worth to learn bash?
