  Let's say I have the following tables my_profile_data ------------- integer: profile_id date: date_changed string: value my_profile ------------- integer: profile_id string: name I want to get the most recent profile information. In plain SQL this would look something like: select mpd.profile_id, mpd.value, max(mpd.date_changed) from my_profile_data mpd, my_profile mp where mpd.profile_id = mp.profile_id and mp.name='The Profile I Want' group by mpd.profile_id I've tried different variants of the following JPQL query, but cant get it to work. In my case, I set PIN RC6 of a PIC18F26K20 in INPUT mode: TRISCbits.TRISC6 = 1; Then I read the value with PORT and LATCH and I have different value! v1 = LATCbits.LATC6; v2 = PORTCbits.RC6; v1 gives me 0 where v2 gives 1. Is it normal? In which case we have to use PORT and in which case LATCH?

  I'm not clear about this.... When having a gridview on the View, is the controller who has to set up the Data source, columns, etc? or I just have to expose the DataBinding stuff, fire it from the controller and let the html/codebehind on the view handle all the rendering and wiring up? • Eclipse Code Templates with Cobol

  People, My team is just beginning to learn how to use COBOL on Eclipse (as part of the Rational Developer for System Z package) and one of our most desired features are code templates or code snippets. What we'd like to have is a code completion based on snippets just like we have on Java. For example, when I type try and hit ctrl-space Eclipse shows me a list of completion options, where one of those is create a try/catch block. Well, in COBOL one could leverage this when creating, for example, embedded SQL blocks, like EXEC SQL SELECT field, field, field, FROM table WHERE field = value, field = value END-EXEC. However, for some reason, it seems that Eclipse treats COBOL a little differently (no wonder why) from other languages. As such, when looking for the code templates in the preferences menu for COBOL, its appearance is very different from the Java one. The question is: how does one uses Eclipse's code templates with COBOL?

  When performing a schema compare having db_owner rights on the target database results in the following error: The user does not have permission to perform this action. Using the SQL Server Profiler I figured out this error occurs executing a query targeting the master db view: [sys].[dm_database_encryption_keys] While specifically ignoring all object types but Tables one would presume the SQL Compare doesn't need access to the db encryption keys. Also note: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vstsdb/thread/c11a5f8a-b9cc-454f-ba77-e1c69141d64b/ One solution would be to GRANT VIEW SERVER STATE to the db user, but in my case I'm not hosting the database services and won't get the rights to the server state. • Change an input's HTML5 placeholder color with CSS

  Chrome supports the placeholder attribute on input[type=text] elements (others probably do too). But the following CSS doesn't do diddly squat: <style> input[placeholder], [placeholder], *[placeholder] { color:red !important; } </style> <input type="text" placeholder="Value" /> "Value" will still be grey (er, gray. whatever) instead of red. Is there are way to change the color of the placeholder text? p.s. I'm already using the jQuery placeholder plugin for the browsers that don't support the placeholder attribute natively.

  Hi all There seems to be an issue with the default model binder when binding to an EntitySet causes the EntitySet to be empty. The problem is described here and here: Microsoft's response is: ... We have now fixed this and the fix will be included in .NET Framework 4.0. With the new behavior, if the EntitySet passed into Assign is the same object as the one its being assigned to, no action will occur. With a work around being to edit the code generated like so: public override EntitySet<Thing> Things { get { return this._Things; } set { //CORRECTION: _Things= new EntitySet<Thing>(); _Things.Assign(value); //WAS: this._Things.Assign(value); } } As you can imagine this is not ideal as you have to re-add the code every time, does anyone have a better solution?

  What is the best way to get back the XAML/XML value of a FlowDocument? I noticed there isn't a .Value, .Text, .Caption, .ToXml(), etc... UDPATE: I'd like to be able to get access to it initially to serialize to disk or database. Treat it as its own document format. Later translating it to other formats would be nice. Also been wondering: Any equivalent to a hyperlink (opens in new browser window) in a FlowDocument? Any workaround?

• Silverlight RIA Services. Query fails on large table but works with Where clause

  I have a somewhat large table, maybe 2000 rows by 50 columns. When using the most basic imaginable RIA implementation. Create one-table Model Create DomainService Drop datagrid onto MainPage.xaml Drop datasource onto datagrid Ctrl-F5 I get this error: System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.DomainOperationException: Load operation faild for query. Value cannot be null. Error is much larger, but thats the beginning of it. The weird thing is that if I narrow the results down with a where clause on the GetQuery, it works fine. In fact six different querys which together result in all of the rows being called works fine also. So basically, I'm sure its not some sort of rogue row. Why do I get this "Value cannot be null" error if I query the whole table? Thanks

• Patterns for implementing field change tracking.

  Hi all For one of my recent projects, I had to implement field change tracking. So anytime the user changed a value of a field, the change was recorded in order to allow full auditing of changes. In the database, I implemented this as a single table 'FieldChanges' with the following fields: TableName, FieldName, RecordId, DateOfChange, ChangedBy, IntValue, TextValue, DateTimeValue, BoolValue. The sproc saving changes to an object determines for each field whether it has been changed and inserts a record into FieldChanges if it has: if the type of the changed field is int, it records it in the IntValue field in the FieldChanges table, etc. This means that for any field in any table with any id value, I can query the FieldChanges table to get a list of changes. This works quite well but is a bit clumsy. Can anyone else who has implemented similar functionality suggest a better approach, and why they think it's better? I'd be really interested - thanks.   I´ve got a very short question about the "dataGridView". I´m developing with the Microsoft PowerShell and I want to copy one Row (from $dataGridView1) to the other ($dataGridView2). With this Code I can only Copy the Value of the last focused Cell. I´ve tried to make this for a whole Row, but it´s only working with Cells.   I have already asked a question about this, but the problems keeps on hitting me ;-) I have two tables that are identical. I want to add a xml column. In the first table this is no problem, but in the second table I get the sqlException (title). However, apart from the data in it, they are the same. So, can I get the sqlException because of data in the table? I have also tried to store the field off page with EXEC sp_tableoption 'dbo.PackageSessionNodesFinished', 'large value types out of row', 1 but without any succes. The same SqlException keeps coming. • SqlDateTime overflow on INSERT when date is correct using a Linq to SQL DataContext

  Dear Linq experts, I get an SqlDateTime overflow error (Must be between 1/1/1753 12:00:00 AM and 12/31/9999 11:59:59 PM.) when doing an INSERT using an Linq DataContext connected to SQL Server database when I do the SubmitChanges(). When I use the debugger the date value is correct. Even if I temporary update the code to set the date value to DateTime.Now it will not do the insert. Did anybody found a work-around for this behaviour? Maybe there is a way to check what SQL the datacontext submits to the database.

• Validate a string in a table in SQL Server - CLR function or T-SQL

  I need to check If a column value (string) in SQL server table starts with a small letter and can only contain '_', '-', numbers and alphabets. I know I can use a SQL server CLR function for that. However, I am trying to implement that validation using a scalar UDF and could make very little here...I can use 'NOT LIKE', but I am not sure how to make sure I validate the string irrespective of the order of characters or in other words write a pattern in SQL for this. Am I better off using a SQL CLR function? Any help will be appreciated.. Thanks in advance Thank you everyone for their comments. This morning, I chose to go CLR function way. For the purpose of what I was trying to achieve, I created one CLR function which does the validation of an input string and have that called from a SQL UDF and It works well. Just to measure the performance of t-SQL UDF using SQL CLR function vs t- SQL UDF, I created a SQL CLR function which will just check if the input string contains only small letters, it should return true else false and have that called from a UDF (IsLowerCaseCLR). After that I also created a regular t-SQL UDF(IsLowerCaseTSQL) which does the same thing using the 'NOT LIKE'. Then I created a table (Person) with columns Name(varchar) and IsValid(bit) columns and populate that with names to test. Data :- 1000 records with 'Ashish' as value for Name column 1000 records with 'ashish' as value for Name column then I ran the following :- UPDATE Person Set IsValid=1 WHERE dbo.IsLowerCaseTSQL (Name) Above updated 1000 records (with Isvalid=1) and took less than a second. I deleted all the data in the table and repopulated the same with same data. Then updated the same table using Sql CLR UDF (with Isvalid=1) and this took 3 seconds! If update happens for 5000 records, regular UDF takes 0 seconds compared to CLR UDF which takes 16 seconds! I am very less knowledgeable on t-SQL regular expression or I could have tested my actual more complex validation criteria. But I just wanted to know, even I could have written that, would that have been faster than the SQL CLR function considering the example above. Are we using SQL CLR because we can implement we can implement lot richer logic which would have been difficult otherwise If we write in regular SQL. Sorry for this long post. • Colour Name to RGB/Hex/HSL/HSV etc

  Hello all, I have come across this great function/command. Colour to RGB, you can do this: col2rgb("peachpuff") //returns hex It will return one hex value. I want to extend this using Perl, Python or PHP but I want to be able to pass in, for example, "yellow" and the function returns all types of yellows - their hex/rgb/?/etc value. I already have a quick solution implemented, which involves mapping colour names to hex values but now I want to get more precise and use some formulas etc to determine what's what. However, as usual, I don't have a clue on how to do this! So I appreciate any implementation advice on how to do this. Thanks all

• How do I determine a best-fit distribution in java?

  I have a bunch of sets of data (between 50 to 500 points, each of which can take a positive integral value) and need to determine which distribution best describes them. I have done this manually for several of them, but need to automate this going forward. Some of the sets are completely modal (every datum has the value of 15), some are strongly modal or bimodal, some are bell-curves (often skewed and with differing degrees of kertosis/pointiness), some are roughly flat, and there are any number of other possible distributions (possion, power-law, etc.). I need a way to determine which distribution best describes the data and (ideally) also provides me with a fitness metric so that I know how confident I am in the analysis. Existing open-source libraries would be ideal, followed by well documented algorithms that I can implement myself.

• Model availability inside ActionFilter

  I have created a new ActionFilter for an ASP.NET MVC application that I'm creating. I have an action which accepts an Http Post and the argument of the action method accepts an object, for which I have created and registered a custom model binder. I noticed that inside the IActionFilter.OnActionExecuting the value for filterContext.Controller.ViewData.Model is always null despite the fact that it looks like the model binder is always invoked before the action filter OnActionExecuting method. In contrast to this inside the IActionFilter.OnActionExecuted method of the same action filter the value for filterContext.Controller.ViewData.Model is not null. Do you guys know if this is by design or a bug? If by design are their any links which describe why this is? Thanks.

  Hi, I'm trying to follow Marcus Zarra in his book 'Core Data'. In the book, he makes a small sample application, but it doesn't give much help when things don't work out... He starts out by visually designing three entities, and then adding array controllers for each entity to the main nib. Second, he adds a tableview and some other visual components to show data from the array controllers. So far, I have managed to follow, but now he adds a search field to the gui, and binds it to the same array controller as one of the tableviews. Expected behavior would be for the tableview to get filtered when typing in the search field, but nothing happens. How do I find out what's wrong?
