  • Why can't I run virtualenv without root?

    I'm trying to run virtual env and all the documentation says I don't need to run it as root (and probably shouldn't). If I run it as root, everything works.   • Can KVM CPU assignment count differ from physical hosts CPU count?

    I have read this question. I knew already that I could for example, have a quad core machine with four guests each having two vCPUs. As they don't all be require 100% CPU usage all the time, the scheduler would handle this for me. My question is about how this relates to a fail-over or migration situation; If host1 has two dual-core CPUs, and I assign guest1 four vCPUs (so it accessed all four physical cores), what will happen if I try and migrate it to host2 which only has one dual-core CPU? Can qemu-kvm emulate more vCPUs than there are physical? Or would I have to shut down the virtual machine, change the CPU assignment, migrate it, and then boot it back up (so no live migration)?     I want to make sure there aren't any odd behaviors that I don't know about when redirecting a SSL VirtualHost with mod_alias Redirect as outlined by Apache here. My code seems to work, but since SSL virtual hosts are restricted to just one IP address, I want to make sure there aren't any problems eluding me. Explicitly not using TLS.   • Unable to connect to a remote SQL Server Instance over a VPN

    I'm running SQL Server 2005 on two different servers running Win XP. The two servers are in different physical locations and are connected via a dedecated point to point data link in a virtual private network(VPN). Im only able to connect to the remote instance of SQL Server by specifying the IP address on the server name property. If I provide the actual server name say 'ServerA', then I get an error message. Everything works fine except configuring replication at the subscriber level, which requires the actual name of the instance, not an IP address or alias. I have already configured both instances on allow remote connections and im running the SQL Server Browser. How do I connect to the remote instance by providing the instance name? Alternatively how I configure subscription to a remote publisher without supplying the remote instance name?

    I think the steps are something like: Install DD-WRT on a router with an external hard-drive Install Optware to get Samba Upgrade to Samba 3.6 (the link shows Samba 3.5, but using the NSLU2 optware packages, you can get 3.6 with built-in SMB2.0) ...then a miracle occurs... Then you can use SMB2.0 to connect to your share What is step 4? I can't find it on forums, etc. Am using Microsoft Network monitor to check for SMB2.0 connection, I'm on Windows 7 and have tried network connections on wireless and gigabit wired to the router. No joy. I doubt it matters, but to get ahead of the questions: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/26/10) big (SVN revision 15508M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko) on Cisco/Linksys E3000

I have exchange server 2010 configured and working without any errors the problem is in cisco router configuration when exchange server sends emails out the receives WAN IP not the public ip. I have configured RDNS lookups with our MX record IP addesses that match the FQDN but all our emails are rejected because it does not match with the public ip. Receiving mails problem is not an problem all mails are coming through. i am sure i am missing something on the router configuration that does not sends the public ip, can any one help me to solve this issue.   • How to fix White Screen of Death after updating iTunes?

    The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

    I'm starting to use CrashPlan to backup my Win 7 PC. I've got it writing to my external HD (for quick local restores) and to CrashPlan Central (for offsite storage). I'd like to backup my entire C:\ drive (the only partition) in a way that: Preserves all of my installed software and configuration, but Avoids backing up log files and other ephemeral / temporary files that are regenerated during normal operation of the OS. Which files and/or directories should I be excluding from backups? I'd like to make this a community wiki, so that we could all contribute towards a definitive list.   • Can I use a Retail DVD media with an OEM key to install Windows Vista?

    I got a Fujitsu computer with OEM license key and Windows Vista. I would like to reinstall Windows on it. But I didn't get any Windows media with it. However, I do poses more than just one DVD installation disc from my Retail copies of Windows Vista that I use on other computers. Can I use this media instead? Or do I have to order a specialty OEM DVD media from the manufacturer or Microsoft? Update: I have found some partition called "EISA" configuration partition. It is a hidden partition that I found in Disk Management. How can I make use of this? Do I boot from it or do I mount it to a drive letter and access it inside Windows? Can this be used to restore the computer? It is about 11 GB in size.

I want to compact this VHD (The real size is 50 GB, 360 GB on the disk). But I can not do this, because the Ubuntu file system is not NTFS. What do I need (gparted, sdelete, ...) for solving this problem? The main problem is that the filesystem is not NTFS, but ext4.

  • Increase backup speed, Backup Exec 2010 - QNAP TS419U+ NAS

    We have a QNAP NAS and the network shares are being backed up by Backup Exec 2010 over SMB. We can't install the remote agent on the NAS as it has an ARM processor and, as far as I am aware, there is no compatible agent. Do you have any suggestions on any faster method of backing up these shares as opposed to the current scenario? Currently the network bandwidth is not the issue, it seems that this access method is just not able to go any quicker. We've also added the NAS shares to the start of the selection list, but we're still running into 18 hours total backup time (total amount of data on the NAS is roughly 650GB). Any comments and/or suggestions welcome. EDIT: Data is being pulled from the NAS by Backup Exec to a LTO4 tape drive

  • Which hardware changes require operating system reinstallation?

    I'm about to upgrade my computer but might keep some parts. Just wandering what I would have to keep to prevent me having to reinstall my OSs, at the moment I have a dual boot setup with ubuntu and windows 7. I'm pretty sure you can't just take your hard drive with the OS on it and put it into a different box and keep going (can you?) but I know you can change the graphics cards, secondary hard drives and ram with out a problem. So what is it that you can't change? The CPU? Motherboard? Thanks for any replies

  • Picasa v.3.6.2 for Mac is suddenly very slow - what are the implications of rebuilding my database?

    Recently Picasa v3.6.2 for Mac has become very sluggish - mainly noticable for any (non destructive) changes made to photos such as starring an image. This action used to be nearly immediate, but recently I've found it can take 1-3 seconds for Picasa to register the change, and become responsive again. I'm considering rebuilding my Picasa database as per these instructions - however I'm concerned I may lose any pre-existing non-destructive (unsaved) edits, along with Picasa albums that I have created. Curious if anyone has experienced Picasa sluggishness with the latest version and/or what their results have been from rebuilding their database. My last resort is to SuperDuper my drive and then rebuild the database, so I can always restore it if I lose critical data.

    I'm currently writing a module for puppet which installs VMWare tools to virtual nodes. I want to do this via yum and and yum-repo. VMWare have their own repo (http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/3.5latest/rhel5/x86_64/index.html) which I thought I could use, rather than creating my own. But then I noticed that their repo files is alot different than the rpm file used when installing VMWare Tools on the node, via the "Install/upgrade VMWare Tools" in vSphere. Does anyone know what the real difference is? Does anyone have any preferences?

  • Supermicro SmartOS setup issue with HDDs

    I'm trying to setup SmartOS on my new Supermicro server (SYS-6027R-N3RF4+). I have 8 HDDs + 2 SSDs installed in the hot-swappable drive bays. I have not configured the Intel RAID controller on the machine (it shows no RAID configured, and lists all 8 HDDs). When I boot SmartOS from my USB key for the first time and get to the initial zpool creation I only see 2 disks listed. How can I tell which two drives are being referenced? How can I get SmartOS to recognize all 8+2 drives? Is there a BIOS setting I need to adjust?

    I'm trying to start a VM on a new Hyper-V installation and I'm receiving the following error: The virtual machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running. The following actions may help you resolve the problem: 1) Verify that the processor of the physical computer has a supported version of hardware-assisted virtualization. 2) Verify that hardware-assisted virtualization and hardware-assisted data execution protection are enabled in the BIOS of the physical computer. (If you edit the BIOS to enable either setting, you must turn off the power to the physical computer and then turn it back on. Resetting the physical computer is not sufficient.) 3) If you have made changes to the Boot Configuration Data store, review these changes to ensure that the hypervisor is configured to launch automatically. My machine supports virtualization at the hardware level and it is enabled in BIOS. Why am I receiving this error?

    I have a 1tb NAS that has a 1tb usb external hard attached I have prepared the file system on the usb disk and mounted it I want to 100% sync my data from my nas to the usb disk - but I want it to be incremental and only have the NAS as the 'master' - eg if a file changes on the usb external hard drive I want it to ignore this change as its not the live version (not that I think the files will change on the usb disk but im paranoid the live could get overwritten) Also if a file gets deleted on live I want to retain the deleted file on the usb disk Can unison sync one-way and achive the above for me? if so with simply unison sorce/ target/ Work?   • how to create iso dvd image for use with mac/osx "Disk Utility"?

    This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail - how to do this - what the options mean e.g. format "mac OS extended (journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard dvd as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'terminal' (the whole point of buying a mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

  • Can't use sudo on ubuntu

    After update and reboot I get 'user is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.' when trying to call sudo. The problem is that I don't have a GRUB with revovery option. I try to boot from live cd but I'm not able to access the system partition, only the partition with grub. Can I somehow enable the recovery mode in GRUB? Or boot throw the live CD from first hard drive with some option for that?

  • Lenovo B460e laptop Unknown filesystem

    I got a Lenovo B460e laptop yesterday (given by the TN Govt). It has WINDOWS 7 Pro Set it up the way I liked it... all software drivers and all. I wanted extra drives, so I entered the WINDOWS diskadmin and changed my partition setup, by splitting and I did the partition setup in the installing proces, so I split my harddisk into 4 parts. So far so good. When I rebooted, I entered GRUB RESCUE MODE. In this mode I know the only command “ls”. Which gives like (hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos4) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1). This Lap does not have a CD drive, otherwise I could have formatted the OS and installed a new OS using WINDOWS 7 CD. Now I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Any idea on how to fix this?
