    Hi all, I was wondering if it was possible for jQuery to find a file extension based on a returned string? A filename (string) will be passed to a function (openFile) and I wanted that function to do different things based on what file has been passed through, it could be image files or pdf files. function openFile(file) { //if .jpg/.gif/.png do something //if .zip/.rar do something else //if .pdf do something else }; I've been looking for something that will find the file's extension but I can't seem to find anything.

    Hi there. After a couple of weeks reading on this forum I thought it was time for me to do my first post. I'm currently rereading Code Complete. I think it's 15 years since the last time, and I find that I still can't write code ;-) Anyway on page 138 in Code Complete you find this coding horror example. (I have removed some of the code) class Emplyee { public: FullName GetName() const; Address GetAddress() const; PhoneNumber GetWorkPhone() const; ... bool IsZipCodeValid( Address address); ... private: ... } What Steve thinks is bad is that the functions are loosely related. Or has he writes "There's no logical connection between employees and routines that check ZIP codes, phone numbers or job classifications" Ok I totally agree with him. Maybe something like the below example is better. class ZipCode { public: bool IsValid() const; ... } class Address { public: ZipCode GetZipCode() const; ... } class Employee { public: Address GetAddress() const; ... } When checking if the zip is valid you would need to do something like this. employee.GetAddress().GetZipCode().IsValid(); And that is not good regarding to the Law of Demeter ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_Demeter][1]). So if you like to remove two of the three dots, you need to use delegation and a couple of wrapper functions like this. class ZipCode { public: bool IsValid(); } class Address { public: ZipCode GetZipCode() const; bool IsZipCodeValid() {return GetZipCode()->IsValid()); } class Employee { public: FullName GetName() const; Address GetAddress() const; bool IsZipCodeValid() {return GetAddress()->IsZipCodeValid()); PhoneNumber GetWorkPhone() const; } employee.IsZipCodeValid(); But then again you have routines that has no logical connection.   • Decent simple SQL Server client

    Hi, does anyone know of a very simple SQL Server client tool - that does the same basic functions as Management Studio (i.e. choose a database and run a query - doesn't need an Object Explorer, or anything fancy)? Ideally it would be great to have a single exe or zip file version that I could take around on a USB key - anything to avoid installing the full set of SQL Server client tools all the time!   • Approaches to create a nested tree structure of NSDictionaries?

    I'm parsing some input which produces a tree structure containing NSDictionary instances on the branches and NSString instance at the nodes. After parsing, the whole structure should be immutable. I feel like I'm jumping through hoops to create the structure and then make sure it's immutable when it's returned from my method. We can probably all relate to the input I'm parsing, since it's a query string from a URL. In a string like this: a=foo&b=bar&a=zip We expect a structure like this: NSDictionary { "a" => NSDictionary { 0 => "foo", 1 => "zip" }, "b" => "bar" } I'm keeping it just two-dimensional in this example for brevity, though in the real-world we sometimes see var[key1][key2]=value&var[key1][key3]=value2 type structures. The code hasn't evolved that far just yet. Expensive and unnecessary? I'm not sure if there are any Cocoa-specific design patterns I can follow here?

Some peoplese said that string ZipConstants.DefaultCodePage = 866; But it not compile. I also use zip.UseUnicodeAsNecessary properties, and convert my file names to utf8 and utf7.

  • Storing third-party libraries in source control

    Should libraries that the application relies on be stored in source control? One part of me says it should and another part say's no. It feels wrong to add a 20mb library that dwarfs the entire app just because you rely on a couple of functions from it (albeit rather heavily). Should you just store the jar/dll or maybe even the distributed zip/tar of the project? What do other people do?

    Hello, I've been trying to use CDT with Eclipse 3.4 under Windows XP with cygwin. What do I need to do, in order to get startet? I used "eclipse-cpp-ganymede-SR1-win32.zip" found on the Eclipse homepage. Edit: The main problem is, that I cannot compile and run the code. In the run configuration, I tried gcc.exe for the C/C++ Application: After adding the path of make.exe to my $Path, and starting from scratch, it works perfectly.

    With IMFMediaSource and IMFByteStreamHandler I can access bytes from media source to determine media type and audio/video stream parameters, such as duration, quality, number of streams, etc. But can I replace these bytes and send them back to client? E.g. I receive zip file bytestream, extract actual media and send another bytestream with asf (for example) data. Is this possible?
