  • How to align floated elements such that their bottoms match

    - by AJM
    I'm writing a web page where I show a title and a date over some text. My HTML: <div class="post"> <h2>Post 1</h2> <span class="date">February 28, 2011</span> <div class="post-content"> ... </div> </div> My css: .post h2 { float: left; } .date { float: right; } .post-content { clear: both; } What I want to do is vertically align the title and date such that their bottoms match. Right now they don't: I tried wrapping the two text elements in a div, setting the div's position to relative, and using absolute positioning on the two text elements (and taking out the float declarations). That didn't work because the top margin is not preserved due to the wrapper div collapsing, even though I gave it a clearfix class.

  • Dash surrounding text

    - by Brandon Hansen
    Given the above dynamically generated text (meaning that I can't just use an image), I am trying to recreate the design using just html and css selectors. I would like to just use a single h4 with the containing text, but am open to other solutions. I would prefer to not use absolute positioning, but again, if that is the only way, then so be it. I have tried surrounding with span tags, but those are inline elements that don't have an inherent width. The h4 will be nested within a div, though not always of the same class or id. Any ideas or resources to get me started?

  • mouse tracking on IE

    - by Gotys
    Consider the following snippet: $(document).bind('mousemove', function(e) { $('#someDiv').css({left: e.pageX+'px', top: e.pageY+'px'}); }); This should make #someDiv follow the mouse (tooltip), when the css value for "position" is set to absolute. Works as expected, except when you Zoom IN or OUT in IE7 ( dind't try other version of IE). Then the e.pageX gets completely off. The more you zoom in (using your mousewheel + CTRL), the more off the positioning gets. I've tried to break jQuery's UI demos (sliders) and it seems not even jQuery guys have this figured out. Is there any genius out there who knows how to fix this nasty thing? Thanks in advance!

  • jQuery Tooltip plugin error

    - by hd
    i have written this code to apply 'jQuery Tooltip plugin' to ajax loaded elements. i mean the row i want to show tooltip on its mouseover is loaded into page by ajax. here's the code: $("[id^=pane]").delegate("[id^=comm]","mouseover",function() { $(this).tooltip({ // each trashcan image works as a trigger tip: "#tooltip", // custom positioning position: "center right", // move tooltip a little bit to the right offset: [0, 15], // there is no delay when the mouse is moved away from the trigger delay: 0 }).dynamic({ bottom: { direction: "down", bounce: true } }); }); the tooltip is shown when mouseover but firebug report this error: "$(this).tooltip({tip: "#tooltip", position: "center right", offset: [0, 15], delay: 0}).dynamic is not a function" is it because of using $(this) ???

  • A depth (z-index) nightmare.

    - by JCOC611
    The best way to illustrate this question is with...a Fiddle! Before you visit the fiddle, notice there is text behind the grayest element, which is on top of a light gray element that has a border. There is a main wrapping div (root), and two wrapping divs inside (wrap1 and wrap2). The problem here is that I need the content of wrap2 (highlight) to be behind the content of wrap1 (text), but in front of the background of the root. This, however, must not change: The HTML, the elements and wraps should be left untouched. Excluding the order of wrap1 and wrap2 inside root. The highlight div must keep the absolute positioning. Styling highlight with background-color is not an option, the existence of highlight is a must. PS: the italics reference the id's of <div>s in the fiddle example, for whomever was too lazy to visit it.

  • How to change the pop-up position of the jQuery DatePicker control

    - by gfrizzle
    Any idea how to get the DatePicker to appear at the end of the associated text box instead of directly below it? What tends to happen is that the text box is towards the bottom of the page and the DatePicker shifts up to account for it and totally covers the text box. If the user wants to type the date instead of pick it, they can't. I'd rather have it appear just after the text box so it doesn't matter how it adjusts vertically. Any idea how to control the positioning? I didn't see any settings for the widget, and I haven't had any luck tweaking the CSS settings, but I could easily be missing something.

  • 3d movement around a sphere

    - by user578954
    Hey guys, Im working in 3d for the first time in a long time. Basically im rotating a sphere and projecting x y z cords to place things on the surface based on the spheres X and Y rotation. Heres the code im using: #define piover180 0.01745329252f GLfloat cosy = cos(yrot * piover180); island[i].x = rad * sin(xrot * piover180)* cosy; island[i].y = rad * sin(yrot * piover180); island[i].z = rad * cos(xrot * piover180) * cosy; Problem is the Xrot positioning works fine but the Yrot placement always draw the objects into the north and south pole so they all cross at the top, which isnt correct for rotating. I need a way to solve this. Heres a picture to help explain http://llllost.com/shuttle/47bcde62.jpg Any help would be greatly appreciated, let me know if you need any more information

  • Specific position for tooltip

    - by Fiona
    Hello, I have a layer which opens up as a tooltip everytime I hover a button. I simply did that by creating a JS function which displays or hides the layer. Now, I am not a pro in JavaScript. My problem is the following: when the button is scrolled towards the top oft he screen I want the tooltip opening below – and if the button is near the bottom of the screen I want the tooltip opening above. Right now I just did it with absolute positioning. But obviously that doesnt do the trick. Who can help? Thanks!

  • do people value information or aesthetic value of websites ? [closed]

    - by fwfwfw
    I'm thinking, why does the web have to be so colorful. meaning, all the information is buried deep beneath layers of flash, javascripts, html and images. Sure, a good positioning of these media files, create an aesthetic value but how important is it to the user ? moreover, aren't people looking for information after all ? why can't the internet be a uniform looking data warehouse ? now we've gotta digg through all the aesthetic junk, using shady web scraping techniques, unless RSS or API is provided. why can't we settle for just a dull grey button and framesets for navigation ? why can't all sites have navigation frame on the left and top ? why can't all sites put their damn data always in normalized table tag ?

  • How should i draw text and shapes in wpf and C#?

    - by peterhu
    I want to do basic WPF graphics, i.e. rectangles, lines, circles and text. When should I use Drawing and when should I use a DrawingVisual? I have some code that uses Drawing and I render those to a DrawingImage and display that in an image control. Is this the right way? I could not see how to add text to a drawing. I had trouble positioning it too. Should I be rendering to a Canvas? I have some code that uses DrawingVisual and writes to a DrawingContext. That is like WinForms. Is this the recommended way? Do you have any high level advice on which APIs to use for basic graphics and labels? Will they options work on Silver Light and Desktop?

  • Showing and hidding a DIV

    - by user1741568
    I'm in the process of building a gallery for my public art pieces. I was wondering if there was an easy way to show and hide a div? I only want the concept text to be seen on the first page of the following link: http://www.gerardtonti.com/PresentTense/PresentTense.html Right now I have the concept in a div called "concept" set to absolute positioning. Is there also a way for the text to conform relative to the size of the window like the background image? I've also tried using an iframe and colorbox instead of a div but had no idea how to make the iframe visible only on the first slide as well. Wether using an iframe or div, I was wondering if it was possible to hide either on the frames that follow the first slide. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Gerry

  • Analog of Java Form Layout in Qt

    - by Narek
    Once I have programmed GUI with Java and have used Form Layouts. Form layout (if I am not mistaken that is from SWT library) made possible to give right, left, top and bottom adges of any GUI element (widget) with respect to other widgets in the same widget (parent widget) or with respect to the adges of parent widget. So it was possible to control the future of widgets that are inside of another one, when that "another widget" is being resized. In Qt I have find the QFormLayout which is similar to Java one, but seems I can't handle with widgets as flexible in terms of relative positioning, as it was with Java's Form Layout. So are there any other means to give a widget position with respect to the others (without overloading resizeEvent function) as that was in Java? Thanks.

  • DIV appear differently in chrome only.

    - by DreamWave
    I have a website at bgflirt.com that appears differently in FireFox and Chrome. This is how it looks in firefox: and here's how it looks in chrome: As you can see, in chrome (and safari) the page is not stretched to fit the entire screen. I'm using this code for positioning the div containing the flash on the right: <div style="width: 200px; position: absolute; right: 0px; top: 10px; overflow: hidden;"> </div> The page should look the way it does in firefox, in all browsers. Any ideas on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated !

  • How to achieve Bottom Align floated div that sizes to it's container.

    - by Davy8
    How can I achieve the following layout? Specifically the positioning of Image and DIV I've found that unless I set a specific width for the Div, it will just go on to the next line and take up the full width of the container. Additionally aligning it relative to the bottom of the image is giving me trouble. Currently they're both float:left Edit: The two solutions so far work if the image is a constant width which I guess I could work with, but it's going in a Wordpress theme for an author's profile page and it's possible that images would have slightly variable widths. Is there a solution that would have the Div right next to the image (minus padding) regardless of how wide or narrow the image is? Basically having the div adjust its width to accommodate the image width.

  • Cocoa (Touch) for Swing Developers #1: Where Are the Layouts?

    - by yar
    My iPhone SDK and Objective-C learning is moving ahead quickly, thanks to several great books and online help (including this one). But I do have some basic questions due to what I already know that will be answered eventually, but I'd rather get a heads-up now if possible :) Are there equivalents for LayoutManagers in Cocoa Touch? Are they used, or is absolute positioning used instead? I have seen some of the layout stuff in IB, but I'm not sure what to look at in code. Aside from using the IB, are UIControls added directly to UIView instances using the addSubview (like add in Swing)? These are just two concrete questions that I've thought of just now, but I would love to see any translation of Swing concepts to Cocoa Touch.

  • Jquery Flexslider - can't see navigational images (manualControl)

    - by Kim Thomas
    I've spent a lot of time looking at the post on 3/13/12 re: manual controls, but isn't getting me all the way there...probably because I don't know jquery. Sorry, newbie on board. I'm trying to get the right/left arrows to show, as well as the 1, 2, 3...at the bottom. They are there, I see the lists on Firebug, just don't know how to add them to the "hook" (?) so they appear. Here is the code I have in header: <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.1/jquery.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="jquery.flexslider.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"> $(window).load(function() { $('.flexslider').flexslider({ animation: "slide", slideshow: false, controlNav: true, manualControls: ".flex-control-nav li a", controlsContainer: ".flex-container" }); }); </script> Here is my html: <div class="flex-container"> <div class="flexslider"> <ul class="slides"> <li><img src="images/tah_home.jpg" alt="taylor art house home page" width="600" height="320"/> <p class="flex-caption">Taylor Art House Home Page</p></li> <li><img src="images/tah_blog.jpg" alt="taylor art house blog page" width="600" height="320" /> <p class="flex-caption">We created a blog that fits seemlessly into Taylor Art House's look</p></li> <li><img src="images/tah_artwork_page.jpg" alt="taylor art house art page" width="600" height="320" /> <p class="flex-caption">One of Taylor Art House's gallery pages, using a Wordpress plugin</p></li> <li><img src="images/tah_arch_portfolio.jpg" alt="jon taylor architecture portfolio page" width="600" height="320" /> <p class="flex-caption">We created links to toggle from TAH to Jon Taylor Architecture</p></li> </ul> </div><!--end flexsider--> </div><!--end flex-container--> Here is the Flexslider CSS: /* * jQuery FlexSlider v1.8 * http://www.woothemes.com/flexslider/ * * Copyright 2012 WooThemes * Free to use under the MIT license. * http://www.opensource.org/licenses/mit-license.php */ /* Browser Resets */ .flex-container a:active, .flexslider a:active, .flex-container a:focus, .flexslider a:focus {outline: none;} .slides, .flex-control-nav, .flex-direction-nav {margin: 0; padding: 0; list-style: none;} /* FlexSlider Necessary Styles *********************************/ .flexslider { width: 100%; margin: 0; padding: 0; } .flexslider .slides > li { display: none; -webkit-backface-visibility: hidden; } /* Hide the slides before the JS is loaded.   • Asp.net PopupControlExtender inside UpdatePabel

    - by user296422
    Hi, So i use PopupControlExtender (to edit some of the fields) inside ListViewControl which itself is embeded inside an UpdatePanel. The problem is as follows whenever you cause partail postback the popup panels are created client side outside the updatepanel. And you get more clientside controls with the same clientside ID. When you postback with popup panel the server side control eg. Texbox has Text = clientsidecontrol1.text, clientsidecontrol2.text, clientsidecontrol.text3 Is there a way to prevent this. <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="Test.aspx.cs" Inherits="Secure_Test" %> <%@ Register assembly="AjaxControlToolkit" namespace="AjaxControlToolkit" tagprefix="cc1" %> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head runat="server"> <title></title> </head> <body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <cc1:ToolkitScriptManager ID="ToolkitScriptManager1" runat="server"> </cc1:ToolkitScriptManager> <div> <asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" runat="server"> <ContentTemplate> <asp:Label ID="InputLabel" runat="server" Text="Whatever you put in the textbox"></asp:Label> <br /> <asp:Label runat="server"> <%= DateTime.Now.ToString() %></asp:Label> <br /> <asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Refresh" /> <br /> <asp:LinkButton ID="PopupLB" runat="server">Popup</asp:LinkButton> <br /> <cc1:PopupControlExtender ID="PopupControlExtender1" runat="server" PopupControlID="Panel1" TargetControlID="PopupLB" CommitProperty="Value"> </cc1:PopupControlExtender> <asp:Panel ID="Panel1" runat="server"> <asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel2" runat="server"> <ContentTemplate> <asp:TextBox ID="InputTB" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> <asp:Button ID="SubmitBTN" runat="server" Text="Submit" onclick="SubmitBTN_Click" UseSubmitBehavior="false" /> </ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel> </asp:Panel> </ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel> </div> </form> </body> </html> using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using AjaxControlToolkit; public partial class Secure_Test : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { } protected void SubmitBTN_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { PopupControlExtender pce = AjaxControlToolkit.PopupControlExtender.GetProxyForCurrentPopup(Page); pce.Commit("Popup"); InputLabel.Text = InputTB.Text; } } To make it easier to test i post the code of an example page i used for testing.   • How to Use Images as Navigation with innerfade Slideshow?

    I am very new to JavaScript and only have the most basic understanding of how it works, so please bear with me. :) I'm using the jquery.innerfade.js script to create a slideshow with fade transitions for a website I'm developing, and I have added navigation buttons (which are set as background-images) that navigate between the “slides”. The navigation buttons have three states: default/off, hover, and on (each state is a separate image). I created a separate JavaScript document to set the buttons to “on” when they are clicked. The “hover” state is achieved through the CSS. Both the slideshow and the navigation buttons work well. There is just one thing I want to add: I would like the appropriate navigation button to display as “on” while the related “slide” is “playing”. Here's the HTML: <div id="mainFeature"> <ul id="theFeature"> <li id="the1feature"><a href="#" name="#promo1"><img src="_images/carousel/promo1.jpg" /></a></li> <li id="the2feature"><a href="#" name="#promo2"><img src="_images/carousel/promo2.jpg" /></a></li> <li id="the3feature"><a href="#" name="#promo3"><img src="_images/carousel/promo3.jpg" /></a></li> </ul> <div id="promonav-con"> <div id="primarypromonav"> <ul class="links"> <li id="the1title" class="promotop"><a rel="1" href="#promo1" class="promo1" id="promo1" onMouseDown="promo1on()"><strong>Botox Cosmetic</strong></a></li> <li id="the2title" class="promotop"><a rel="2" href="#promo2" class="promo2" id="promo2" onMouseDown="promo2on()"><strong>Promo 2</strong></a></li> <li id="the3title" class="promotop"><a rel="3" href="#promo3" class="promo3" id="promo3" onMouseDown="promo3on()"><strong>Promo 3</strong></a></li> </ul> </div> </div> And here is the jquery.innerfade.js, with my changes: (function($) { $.fn.innerfade = function(options) { return this.each(function() { $.innerfade(this, options); }); }; $.innerfade = function(container, options) { var settings = { 'speed': 'normal', 'timeout': 2000, 'containerheight': 'auto', 'runningclass': 'innerfade', 'children': null }; if (options) $.extend(settings, options); if (settings.children === null) var elements = $(container).children(); else var elements = $(container).children(settings.children); if (elements.length > 1) { $(container).css('position', 'relative').css('height', settings.containerheight).addClass(settings.runningclass); for (var i = 0; i < elements.length; i++) { $(elements[i]).css('z-index', String(elements.length-i)).css('position', 'absolute').hide(); }; this.ifchanger = setTimeout(function() { $.innerfade.next(elements, settings, 1, 0); }, settings.timeout); $(elements[0]).show(); } }; $.innerfade.next = function(elements, settings, current, last) { $(elements[last]).fadeOut(settings.speed); $(elements[current]).fadeIn(settings.speed, function() { removeFilter($(this)[0]); }); if ((current + 1) < elements.length) { current = current + 1; last = current - 1; } else { current = 0; last = elements.length - 1; } this.ifchanger = setTimeout((function() { $.innerfade.next(elements, settings, current, last); }), settings.timeout); }; })(jQuery); // **** remove Opacity-Filter in ie **** function removeFilter(element) { if(element.style.removeAttribute){ element.style.removeAttribute('filter'); } } jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('ul#theFeature').innerfade({ speed: 1000, timeout: 7000, containerheight: '291px' }); // jQuery('#mainFeature .links').children('li').children('a').attr('href', 'javascript:void(0);'); jQuery('#mainFeature .links').children('li').children('a').click(function() { clearTimeout(jQuery.innerfade.ifchanger); for(i=1;i<5;i++) { jQuery('#the'+i+'feature').css("display", "none"); //jQuery('#the'+i+'title').children('a').css("background-color","#226478"); } // if(the_widths[(jQuery(this).attr('rel')-1)]==960) { // jQuery("#vic").hide(); // } else { // jQuery("#vic").show(); // } // jQuery('#the'+(jQuery(this).attr('rel'))+'title').css("background-color", "#286a7f"); jQuery('#the'+(jQuery(this).attr('rel'))+'feature').css("display", "block"); clearTimeout(jQuery.innerfade.ifchanger); }); }); And the separate JavaScript that I created: function promo1on() {document.getElementById("promo1").className="promo1on"; document.getElementById("promo2").className="promo2"; document.getElementById("promo2").className="promo2"; } function promo2on() {document.getElementById("promo2").className="promo2on"; document.getElementById("promo1").className="promo1"; document.getElementById("promo3").className="promo3"; } function promo3on() {document.getElementById("promo3").className="promo3on"; document.getElementById("promo1").className="promo1"; document.getElementById("promo2").className="promo2"; } And, finally, the CSS: #mainFeature {float: left; width: 672px; height: 290px; margin: 0 0 9px 0; list-style: none;} #mainFeature li {list-style: none;} #mainFeature #theFeature {margin: 0; padding: 0; position: relative;} #mainFeature #theFeature li {position: absolute; margin: 0; list-style: none; position: relative; font-family: arial, verdana, sans-serif; width: 463px; height: 26px;} #mainFeature .links li.promotop {list-style: none; display: block; float: left; display: inline; margin: 0; padding: 0;} #mainFeature .links li a {display: block; float: left; display: inline; height: 26px; text-decoration: none; margin: 0; padding: 0; cursor: pointer;} #mainFeature .links li a strong {margin-left: -9999px;} #mainFeature .links li a.promo1 {background: url(../_images/carouselnav/promo1.gif); width: 155px;} .promo3on {background: url(../_images/carouselnav/promo3_on.gif); width: 155px;} Hopefully this makes sense! Again, I'm very new to JavaScript/JQuery, so I apologize if this is a mess. I'm very grateful for any suggestions. Thanks!

  • Drop Down not even showing up in IE6

    - by blackessej
    I've got a drop down menu here that just plain won't show up in IE6. The site works perfectly in every other browser. Seems daft to lose sleep over IE6, I know, but the site is for a demographic who could very well still be using it. Here's the CSS: html { height:100%; } body, p, a, ul, li, ol, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 { margin:0; padding:0; } body { behavior:url("csshover3.htc"); font-size:14px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color:#d3d3d3; height:100%; } h1 { font-size:18px; color:#752eca; text-decoration:none; } h2 { font-size:14px; color:#909090; text-decoration:none!important; } p { text-indent:20px; color:#000; } p a { color:#000; text-decoration:underline; } p.foot { text-indent:0px; } p.link { font-size:18px; color:#30F; text-decoration:underline!important; } a { color:#4d2288; text-decoration:none; outline:none; } a:visited { color:#4d2288; } p a:hover { text-decoration:underline!important; } ul#nav { padding:5px; margin:0px auto; width:100%; } ul#nav li a { display:block; font-weight:bold; padding:2px 10px; background:#bacddb; } ul#nav li a:hover { background:#888; color:#fff; } li { list-style:none; float:left; position:relative; width:225px; text-align:center; margin:0px auto; margin-right:4px; border:1px solid #4d2288; } li ul { display:none; position:relative; width:auto; top:0; left:0; margin-left:-1px; } li>ul { top:auto; left:auto; border-top:none; } li:hover ul, li.over ul { display:block; } ul#nav li.current a { background:#b8ab28; } ul#nav li.current a:hover { background:#888; } img { margin:10px 0 5px; } *html img { margin:20px; } .coltextimg { position:relative; float:left; background-position:left bottom; padding:0px 20px 10px 0px; border:none; } #maincontent { width:940px; margin:0px auto; postition:absolute; } *html #maincontent { margin-left:42px; } #header { float:left; width:100%; height:auto!important; height:100%; min-height:100%; margin:0px auto; background-image:url(images/banner_test.jpg); background-repeat:no-repeat; border:2px solid #752eca; -webkit-border-top-left-radius:10px; -webkit-border-top-right-radius:10px; -moz-border-radius-topleft:10px; -moz-border-radius-topright:10px; border-top-left-radius:10px; border-top-right-radius:10px; } .colmask { position:relative; margin-top:160px; clear:both; float:left; width:100%; overflow:hidden; } .colright, .colmid { float:left; width:100%; position:relative; } .col1, .col2 { float:left; position:relative; padding:10px 0 1em 0; overflow:hidden; } .twocol { background:#fff; } .twocol .colmid { right:45%; background:#fff; } .twocol .col1 { width:51%; left:47%; text-align:justify; z-index:0; } .twocol .col2 { width:41%; left:51%; text-align:justify; z-index:0; } .twocol .colimg { border:2px solid #a0a0a0; } .twocol .colvid1 { width:360px; height:240px; } .twocol .colvid2 { width:360px; height:240px; } #footer { text-align:center; font-size:9px; padding:10px 0 1em 0; clear:both; width:100%; height:100%; } *html #footer { height:43px; } #footer p a { text-decoration:none; } #lyr_ddmenu { position:absolute; z-index:1; height:10px; top:120px; float:left; width:1000px; margin:0px auto; padding:5px; } #contact { position:absolute; float:right; font-size:10px; } A.Controls:link { color:#666666; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } A.Controls:visited { color:#666666; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } A.Controls:active { color:#666666; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } A.Controls:hover { color:#be0000; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } And here's the html I'm having the specific problem with: <div id="maincontent"> <div id="header"> <div id="lyr_ddmenu"> <ul id="nav"> <li class="current"><href here...</a> <ul class="sub"> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> </ul></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <ul class="sub"> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> </ul></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <ul class="sub"> <li><href here...</a></li> </ul></li> </ul> </div> Thanks!

  • What&rsquo;s new in RadChart for 2010 Q1 (Silverlight / WPF)

    Greetings, RadChart fans! It is with great pleasure that I present this short highlight of our accomplishments for the Q1 release :). Weve worked very hard to make the best silverlight and WPF charting product even better. Here is some of what we did during the past few months.   1) Zooming&Scrolling and the new sampling engine: Without a doubt one of the most important things we did. This new feature allows you to bind your chart to a very large set of data with blazing performance. Dont take my word for it give it a try!   2) New Smart Label Positioning and Spider-like labels feature: This new feature really helps with very busy graphs. You can play with the different settings we offer in this example.     3) Sorting and Filtering. Much like our RadGridview control the chart now allows you to sort and filter your data out of the box with a single line of code!   4) Legend improvements Weve also been paying attention to those of you who wanted a much improved legend. It is now possible to customize the look and feel of legend items and legend position with a single click.     5) Custom palette brushes. You have told us that you want to easily customize all palette colors using a single clean API from both XAML and code behind. The new custom palette brushes API does exactly that.   There are numerous other improvements as well, as much improved themes, performance optimizations and other features that we did. If you want to dig in further check the release notes and changes and backwards compatibility topics.   Feel free to share the pains and gains of working with RadChart. Our team is always open to receiving constructive feedback and beer :-)Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • Force.com presents Database.com SQL Azure/Amazon RDS unfazed

    - by Sarang
    At the DreamForce 2010 event in San Francisco Force.com unveiled their next big thing in the Fat SaaS portfolio "Database.com".  I am still wondering how would they would've shelled out for that domain name. Now why would a already established SaaS player foray into a key building block like Database? Potentially allowing enterprises to build apps that do not utilize the Force.com stack! One key reason is being seen as the Fat SaaS player with evey trick in the SaaS space under his belt. You want CRM come hither, want a custom development PaaS like solution welcome home (VMForce), want all your apps to talk to a cloud DB and minimize latency by having it reside closer to you cloud apps? You've come to the right place sire! Other is potentially killing foray of smaller DB players like Oracle (Not surprisingly, the Database.com offering is a highly customized and scalable Oracle database) from entering the lucrative SaaS db marketplace. The feature set promised looks great out of the box for someone who likes to visualize cool new architectures. The ground realities are certainly going to be a lot different considering the SOAP/REST style access patterns in lieu of the comfortable old shoe of SQL. Microsoft suffered heavily with SDS (SQL Data Services) offering in early 2009 and had to pull the plug on the product only to reintroduce as a simple SQL Server in the cloud, SQL Windows Azure. Though MSFT is playing cool by providing OData semantics to work with SQL Windows Azure satisfying atleast some needs of the Web-Style to a DB. The other features like Social data models including Profiles, Status updates, feeds seem interesting as well. (Although I beleive social is just one of the aspects of large scale collaborative computing). All these features start "Free" for devs its a good news but the good news stops here. The overall pricing model of $ per Users per Transactions / Month is highly disproportionate compared to Amazon RDS (Based on MySQL) or SQL Windows Azure (Based on MSSQL). Roger Jennigs of Oakleaf did an interesting comparo based on 3, 10, 100, 500 users and it turns out that Database.com going by current understanding is way too expensive for the services on offer. The offering may not impact the decision for DotNet shops mulling their cloud stategy or even some Java/MySQL shops thinking about Amazon RDS, however for enterprises having already invested in other force.com offerings this could be a very important piece in the cloud strategy jigsaw. One which would address a key cloud DB issue of "Latency" for them at least it will help having the DB in the neighborhood. The tooling and "SQL like" access provider drivers (Think ODBC/JDBC) will be available later this year. Progress Software has already announced their JDBC driver stack for Database.com. It remains to be seen how effective the overall solutions proves to be in the longer run but for starts its a important decision towards consolidating Force.com's already strong positioning in the SaaS space. As always contrasting views are welcome! :)
