• CUDA & MSI GT60 with Optimus enabled GTX670M?

  I have a MSI GT60 Laptop with an Optimus enabled GTX 670M GPU, and I have been trying to get CUDA going in Ubuntu 12.04 environment. I realize that Optimus is not supported in Linux, but I have read the following post suggesting that CUDA works for hybrid GPUs. How can I get nVidia CUDA or OpenCL working on a laptop with nVidia discrete card/Intel Integrated Graphics? I installed the NVIDIA driver via sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current The resulting driver version is 302.17, and supposedly GTX 670M is supported since 295.59. I also downloaded CUDA 4.2 from the NVIDIA site, and compiled it against nvidia-current libraries. Unfortunately, when I run deviceQuery in the CUDA SDK, I get the following output cudaGetDeviceCount returned 38 -> no CUDA-capable device is detected Checking /proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0/information gives the following Model: GeForce GTX 670M IRQ: 16 GPU UUID: GPU-????????-????-????-????-???????????? • Restart and/or graphics problem in Ubuntu 12.04

  I having been using 12.04 for a couple of months now, with v. little problems. The other day I restarted my computer, and though I think it rebooted, the screen would be black. I could not even get a visual from a live cd. Finally, I was able to get it to load, but the resolution has been completely off. The computer thinks I have a laptop screen, when I actually have a ViewSonic VP2330wb, and it detects only two resolutions. And still, I have a problem with rebooting. If the screen locks after I leave it for a while, I can't get a visual back, and then when I force a shutdown, it takes 3 times for me to get a grub screen. Then I have to boot in recovery mode, and then finally in normal mode, but the screen is still always off. • How to deal with a valuable person going in all directions?

  I am working with someone producing user content to be included in a software application. He is not a coder, but rather an expert in his field, sharing the knowledge. His contribution, taken piece by piece is great, but he goes in all directions and has issues producing work sequentially. He works on 25 pieces of content at the same time, and as soon as he reads something 'interesting', he wants to rewrite some of his stuff to improve the quality of it. He does not converge naturally. He collects tons of informations, produces some valuable stuff, but in a completely unstructured way. We addressed this issue with him some time ago and in order to try to solve it, we created a document with the 100 items he had to fill. Problem is, it does not seem to work very well. How to deal with those people and collect information? I was thinking about a new technique: ask him to send his bits, out of order, little by little, as soon as they are ready, and keep a list of what remains to be done, and show him that list to give him direction. This situation is stressing the hell out of me. If his production was not good, I would not be trying so hard to make this work. If you have experience to share, it is welcome.

  I heard that Ubuntu can boot up around 30sec, but I take more than 60sec every time my Ubuntu boot. I also read some forum said need to post the dmesg and bootchart to identify which process slowing down the booting time, as I'm not expert in Ubuntu and wish to learn more about it, I humbly ask any pro here to teach me how. • Black login screen Ubuntu 12.04 if WGA cable pluged in on reboot

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.1, 64 bits, installed on a Z77 Pro4 (ASrock motherboard), crucial M4 SSD drive (sata 3), and intel i5 3570k (ivy bridge). I have this annoying problem : When I startup the computer, I get a CLI login prompt : At this moment, if I press enter, i get the usual CLI login prompt. If not, here is what I get : From now, if I login using CLI, i identify the lightdm processus, kill and start it : #ps -A | grep lightdm #sudo kill -9 1273 #sudo lightdm and miracle, these commands bring back the gui login screen. BUT It's very annoying as I have to repeat these steps at every boot, and the people using this desktop are not familiar with linux at all! So I tried to figure out the cause and here is what I found : If, when I shutdown the computer, the WGA cable is not pluged in, then Ubuntu will boot on GUI login screen without a glitch! But If the WGA cable is pluged in when shuting down, I will get CLI login prompt... Note 1: I installed linux kernel 3.4, but it hasn't solve the problem. Note 2: Is it linked to the new HD 4000 integrated graphic processor ? Note 3: If i boot on an USB stick (Ubuntu 12.04), NO problems ! Note 4: If booting on the SSD, when clicking "shutdown" button, the shutdown process never ends up (logout screen keep displaying and fans are still rolling). But if booting on USB stick, the shutdown action runs properly.

• Checking for collisions on a 3D heightmap

  I have a 3D heightmap drawn using OpenGL (which isn't important). It's represented by a 2D array of height data. To draw this I go through the array using each point as a vertex. Three vertices are wound together to form a triangle, two triangles to make a quad. To stop the whole mesh being tiny I scale this by a certain amount called 'gridsize'. This produces a fairly nice and lumpy, angular terrain kind of similar to something you'd see in old Atari/Amiga or DOS '3D' games (think Virus/Zarch on the Atari ST). I'm now trying to work out how to do collision with the terrain, testing to see if the player is about to collide with a piece of scenery sticking upwards or fall into a hole. At the moment I am simply dividing the player's co-ordinates by the gridsize to find which vertex the player is on top of and it works well when the player is exactly over the corner of a triangle piece of terrain. However... How can I make it more accurate for the bits between the vertices? I get confused since they don't exist in my heightmap data, they're a product of the GPU trying to draw a triangle between three points. I can calculate the height of the point closest to the player, but not the space between them. I.e if the player is hovering over the centre of one of these 'quads', rather than over the corner vertex of one, how do I work out the height of the terrain below them? Later on I may want the player to slide down the slopes in the terrain.

• How to Structure a Trinary state in DB and Application

  How should I structure, in the DB especially, but also in the application, a trinary state? For instance, I have user feedback records which need to be reviewed before they are presented to the general public. This means a feedback reviewer must see the unreviewed feedback, then approve or reject them. I can think of a couple ways to represent this: Two boolean flags: Seen/Unseen and Approved/Rejected. This is the simplest and probably the smallest database solution (presumably boolean fields are simple bits). The downside is that there are really only three states I care about (unseen/approved/rejected) and this creates four states, including one I don't care about (a record which is seen but not approved or rejected is essentially unseen). String column in the DB with constants/enum in application. Using Rating::APPROVED_STATE within the application and letting it equal whatever it wants in the DB. This is a larger column in the db and I'm concerned about doing string comparisons whenever I need these records. Perhaps mitigatable with an index? Single boolean column, but allow nulls. A true is approved, a false is rejected. A null is unseen. Not sure the pros/cons of this solution. What are the rules I should use to guide my choice? I'm already thinking in terms of DB size and the cost of finding records based on state, as well as the readability of code the ends up using this structure.

• What's wrong with circular references?

  I was involved in a programming discussion today where I made some statements that basically assumed axiomatically that circular references (between modules, classes, whatever) are generally bad. Once I got through with my pitch, my coworker asked, "what's wrong with circular references?" I've got strong feelings on this, but it's hard for me to verbalize concisely and concretely. Any explanation that I may come up with tends to rely on other items that I too consider axioms ("can't use in isolation, so can't test", "unknown/undefined behavior as state mutates in the participating objects", etc.), but I'd love to hear a concise reason for why circular references are bad that don't take the kinds of leaps of faith that my own brain does, having spent many hours over the years untangling them to understand, fix, and extend various bits of code. Edit: I am not asking about homogenous circular references, like those in a doubly-linked list or pointer-to-parent. This question is really asking about "larger scope" circular references, like libA calling libB which calls back to libA. Substitute 'module' for 'lib' if you like. • Wireless connection disconnects and reconnects with a Netgear WNA1000

  Ever since I made the permanent switch from Vista to Ubuntu i've had wireless connectivity problems. From watching the network manager when it disconnects it seems like it turns off the receiver for some reason. Could it be bad drivers? I used their install software and the site doesn't really offer driver downloads. The adapter is a Netgear WNA1000 if memory serves, and I don't know much about the router except that it's a Motorola Surfboard. • Is there a (family of) monotonically non-decreasing noise function(s)?

  I'd like a function to animate an object moving from point A to point B over time, such that it reaches B at some fixed time, but its position at any time is randomly perturbed in a continuous fashion, but never goes backwards. The objects move along straight lines, so I only need one dimension. Mathematically, that means I'm looking for some continuous f(x), x ? [0,1], such that: f(0) = 0 f(1) = 1 x < y ? f(x) = f(y) At "most" points f(x + d) - f(x) bears no obvious relation to d. (The function is not uniformly increasing or otherwise predictable; I think that's also equivalent to saying no degree of derivative is a constant.) Ideally, I would actually like some way to have a family of these functions, providing some seed state. I'd need at least 4 bits of seed (16 possible functions), for my current use, but since that's not much feel free to provide even more. To avoid various issues with accumulation errors, I'd prefer the function not require any kind of internal state. That is, I want it to be a real function, not a programming "function".

As part of the SQL 2012 launch activities, we are now making V2.0 available to everyone, following our tradition of providing a separate download page. • Couldn't pass the signin screen on ubuntu

  I have an issue here with my computer using ubuntu 10.10 on a 64 bits machine. When I start it, I have the login screen, I enter my credentials but instead of starting the session it reloads the login screen again. I checked the disc using fsck and it seems clean. How should I proceed to diagnose and repair this issue? Thanks! • SSD I/O extremely slow installing/booting Ubuntu 12.04

  These are some useful specs: Macbook Pro 7,1 OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 2,5" SATA SSD (120 GB). Has SandForce driver. Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop 32 bits. One 18 GB partition for GNU/Linux and 1.5 GB for SWAP. MD5 for the Ubuntu install CD is OK. I tried to install Ubuntu. It seems that everything is recognized, but there's a big problem: read and writes to the SSD are extremely slow. For example, the install process, which shouldn't take more than 20 minutes, it takes 7 hours. Then, booting up the computer takes about 20 minutes. I checked and the problem is definitely the SSD. Every access to any file is like 10 times slower than normal. I have tried to format the partition as Ext4 and Ext3 with the same problem. Trying to install other distros like Fedora 17, I have a similar problem. There's a "lag" with the SSD, but not so accused as in Ubuntu. Surprisingly, Debian 6.0 installs and works without any problem. Mac OS works pretty good as well in the other partition, so I discard it's an SSD problem. Thanks for your help!

• Google Chrome on Ubuntu 12.04 not rendering webpages correctly

  I am facing some serious web page rendering issues with Chrome. It is more prominent during javascript based animations and stuff on websites like youtube. I have tried removing chrome using (sudo apt-get purge google-chrome-stable) and then reinstalling it. But the problems still persist. The same webpages work correctly on firefox on ubuntu and chrome on windows. The problem only shows up when I use chrome on ubuntu. I think the issue has started after I updated to the latest version of Chrome. I have used Chrome previously on this machine without any problems. I have attached a image that demonstrates the issue. What could possibly be the problem? • Dim (NEARLY blank) laptop screen, secondary screen works - why?

  My laptop screen is (almost) black while my secondary screen is fine. I believe it to be backlight / brightness related. Problem description it starts when I start the laptop system loads and works fine, just screen has problems I can see the screen though very faintly / dimly - it's hard to see anything which ain't very white e.g. starting screen has big Thinkpad logo in white, large font - I can see it, though very dimly second screen works very well Official backligtht debugging: using acpi setting as prescribed there for Thinkpads didn't help I can see an entry in /sys/class/backlight/ and it changes when I press hotkeys for brightness (current backlight power for instance goes up or down) acpi-off didn't helpm neither did acpi_backlight=vendor Hardware data Laptop is Thinkpad Edge with glossy screen. 4 processors, 2 cores, exemplary CPU data from cat /proc/cpuinfo reports Genuine Intel i5 (M 480 @ 2.67GHz). • Ubuntu 14.04 install fails with Via S3 UniChrome Pro graphics

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro laptop(it's quite old yes, has about 30GB Hard Drive and I think 192mb of RAM) which currently has Windows XP installed (which I'd like to keep for the time being). I have downloaded the 32-bit Desktop ISO and used unetbootin to create a Live USB for this laptop. When I boot from USB, I arrive at the unetbootin Grey and Blue menu and pick either "Try Ubuntu without installing", or "Install Ubuntu". The menu goes away and an Ubuntu loadscreen showing UBUNTU and four dots which progressively change between white and orange. At about the second color changing cycle a white underscore symbol appears next to the fourth dot and flickers. There is some leftover text from the kernel boot still visible, but there is no graphical desktop. • Can't get Unity 3D to work in 11.10

• Wifi doesn't connect if I'm upstairs

  Hello there, I'm finding that Wifi connects when I'm in the living room, where the internet router etc is. But if I try to connect upstairs it is a no go. Booting in Windows 7 (dual boot :D ) I find that Wifi connects. I find this very confusing and have it since the install. Please help! • Career change: from programming into more human-oriented area [closed]

  I have been a software developer for approximately 9 years, starting with part-time work during my graduation year at uni. During these years I worked for number of companies, sometimes changing places twice or three times a year. They say it takes 10 years to reach 'expert' level, and while I don't think I am an expert by any measure and I have certainly met lots of people who are more knowledgeable, smarter and more focused than I am, I think I can safely say that I had my fair share of the whole programming trade and would like to move on to something else. Psychology and behaviour was always something I was interested in, especially the practical, applicable bits of it. Recently I've been to some communication skills training and I realised that I have been missing out on the great deal of fun stuff - how people work and communicate, especially in subconscious, non-verbal area. Currently I am thinking of making a career change - ideally to move somewhere my technical skill would still be beneficial in some shape or form, or at least could serve as a bridge while I am transitioning there, you know, the whole gradual, bit-by-bit approach versus swim-or-drown one. I would like to hear your thoughts on this matter and to learn from you what are the possible transitions I can take.

• Resume on 30 Days of SharePoint

  Dear readers, as you might have noticed... It was an organisational desaster on my end! Even though I continued my studies and research on Microsoft SharePoint 2013 during the last 30 days, I wasn't able to write an article a day to keep you posted on my progress. Nonetheless, I gathered a good number of additional blogs, mainly SharePoint MVP sites, and online forums which will be helpful in the next couple of weeks while I'm actually going to develop a C#-based client which will enable an existing 'legacy' application to SharePoint as a document management system (DMS) besides other already existing solutions. Finding excuses Well, no. Not really. I simply didn't block any or enough time every day to write down my progress during my own challenge. My log book on learning about SharePoint stands at 41 hours and 15 minutes during this month. Which means that I spent an average of more than 1 hour per day on getting into SharePoint. I know that might sound a little bit low but also keep in mind that I went for the challenge on top of my daily job and private responsibilities. During the same period there had been two priority 0 incidents from clients - external root cause - which took presedence over this leisure project. More to come Anyway, it was a first trial and despite the low level of reporting on my blog, I'm confident about what I learned during the last 30 days, and I'm ready to implement the client's requirements. At least, I would say that I have a better understanding about the road map or the path to walk during the next month. As time and secrecy allows I'm going to note down some bits and pieces... During the process of development, I'm going to 'cheat' on the challenge summary article and add links to those new entries. Just for the sake of completeness. Next challenge? Hmm, there had been ideas during the last meetup of the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (MSCC) regarding certifications in IT and eventually we might organise some kind of a study group for specific exams, most probably Microsoft exams towards MCSD Web Developer or Windows Developer.

• LiveCD not booting/can't install Ubuntu 11.04

  So, i got a new laptop somedays ago and as usualy, i went formated it to install Ubuntu. Download 11.04 and burned it on my pendrive using my old laptop (running 11.04). When i tryed to boot from the LiveUSB on my new laptop, it just showed me some weird graphics and if i select any option (can't see what im selecting), it gives me a black screen and that is all. Then i tryed to boot with this LiveUSB on my old laptop, and it worked just fine ._. Burned a CD with Ubuntu 11.04 (64bits) and the problem continue. Then i tought it could be my CD Driver, since the laptop is new and all... burned a Windows 7 64 bits DVD and it worked just fine. Also, if i check the CD/Pendrive inside Windows Seven, all the files there are ok. Anyone have any idea of what can be? I found lots of questions about this, but none of them had the weird menus i'm getting ._. oohh... i also get a "prefix is not set" before the weird menu appears :S My sis specs: Intel Core i5 2400 Intel HD 3000 4gb DDR3 If anyone can help, i will be really greatfull ._.
