• Linux Kernel not passing through multicast UDP packets

  Recently I've set up a new Ubuntu Server 10.04 and noticed my UDP server is no longer able to see any multicast data sent to the interface, even after joining the multicast group. I've got the exact same set up on two other Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS machines and there is no problem receiving data after joining the same multicast group. When I try to capture the traffic using a simple ruby UDP server I receive zero data! Here's a simple server that reads data send on port 15572 and prints the first two characters. This works on the two 8.04.4 Ubuntu Servers, but not the 10.04 server. require 'socket' s = UDPSocket.new s.bind("", 15572) 5.times do text, sender = s.recvfrom(2) puts text end If I send a UDP packet crafted in ruby to localhost, the server receives it and prints out the first two characters. At this point I'm stuck. I've confirmed the kernel config has multicast enabled. • SQL Server Log File Won't Shrink due cause "log are pending replication" on non replicated DB?

  I have a non Mission Critial DB 9am-5pm SQL Server database that I have set up to do nightly full backups and log backups every 30 minutes during business hours. The database is in full recovery and normally I have no reason to truncate/shrink logs unless I do some heavy maintenance. Log backups manage the size with no issue. However I have not been at this client for several weeks and upon inspection I noticed that the log had grown to about 10 times the size of the .mdf file. I poked around backups had been running and I had not gotten any severity error alerts (SQL mail). I attempted to put DB in simple recovery and shrink the log, this was no good. I precede to try a log backup and I got: The log was not truncated because records at the beginning of the log are pending replication or Change Data Capture. Ensure the Log Reader Agent or capture job is running or use sp_repldone to mark transactions as distributed or captured. Restart SQL Server rinse repeat same thing ... I said ??? Replication is not nor ever has been set up on this DB or database /server ??? So the log backups have not been flushing the .ldf. The solution seems to have been to run exec sp_repldone, more precisley EXEC sp_repldone @xactid = NULL, @xact_segno = NULL, @numtrans = 0, @time= 0, @reset = 1 This procedure can be used in emergency situations to allow truncation of the transaction log when transactions pending replication are present. Using this procedure prevents Microsoft SQL Server 2000 from replicating the database until the database is unpublished and republished. ~ MSDN When I do that I get the following Msg 18757, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_repldone, Line 1 Unable to execute procedure. The database is not published. Execute the procedure in a database that is published for replication. Which makes sense Because the DB has never been published for replication. I have several questions: A) First and foremost is, WTF is going on ? What is causeing this, I am interested in knowing the why here ? Is this genuinley a bug or is there some aspect of the backup that is not functioning properly that cause's the DB to mimick a replicated state ? Someone please edify me on this. B) Second ... Do I really have to publish / replicate this DB to exec this SP to fix this ??? Sounds crazy or is there some T-SQL that I can put it in a published state exec the proc and be on my way ... C) Third, if I do indeed have to publish this database to exec the SP to release this unneeded mis replicated/intended log , to get my .ldf file and backup back on track. How do I publish the database without an online host that it is asking for ??? I don't generally do this kind of database administration and need some guidance. Sorry if this is too verbose but just voicing the question helps me clarify it ... Thank you in advance for your help

• Using Lightbox with _Screen

  Although, I have to admit that I discovered Bernard Bout's ideas and concepts about implementing a lightbox in Visual FoxPro quite a while ago, there was no "spare" time in active projects that allowed me to have a closer look into his solution(s). Luckily, these days I received a demand to focus a little bit more on this. This article describes the steps about how to integrate and make use of Bernard's lightbox class in combination with _Screen in Visual FoxPro. The requirement in this project was to be able to visually lock the whole application (_Screen area) and guide the user to an information that should not be ignored easily. Depending on the importance any current user activity should be interrupted and focus put onto the notification. Getting the "meat", eh, source code Please check out Bernard's blog on Foxite directly in order to get the latest and greatest version. As time of writing this article I use version 6.0 as described in this blog entry: The Fastest Lightbox Ever The Lightbox class is sub-classed from the imgCanvas class from the GdiPlusX project on VFPx and therefore you need to have the source code of GdiPlusX as well, and integrate it into your development environment. The version I use is available here: Release GDIPlusX 1.20 As soon as you open the bbGdiLightbox class the first it, VFP might ask you to update the reference to the gdiplusx.vcx. As we have the sources, no problem and you have access to Bernard's code. The class itself is pretty easy to understand, some properties that you do not need to change and three methods: Setup(), ShowLightbox() and BeforeDraw() The challenge - _Screen or not? Reading Bernard's article about the fastest lightbox ever, he states the following: "The class will only work on a form. It will not support any other containers" Really? And what about _Screen? Isn't that a form class, too? Yes, of course it is but nonetheless trying to use _Screen directly will fail. This.Visible = .F.ENDIF My first trials in using the class ended in an exception - GdiPlusError:OutOfMemory - thrown by the Bitmap object. Frankly speaking, this happened mainly because of my lack of knowledge about GdiPlusX. After reading some documentation, especially about the FromScreen() method I experimented a little bit. Capturing the visible area of _Screen actually was not the real problem but the dimensions I specified for the bitmap. The modifications - step by step First of all, it is to get rid of restrictive object references on Thisform and to change them into either This.Parent or more generic into This.oForm (even better: This.oControl). Although, Bernard says it clearly in his article: "Just drop the class on a form and call it as shown." It did not come clear to my mind in the first place with _Screen, but, yeah, he is right. Dropping the class on a form provides a permanent link between those two classes, it creates a valid This.Parent object reference. Bearing in mind that the lightbox class can not be "dropped" on the _Screen, we have to create the same type of binding during runtime execution like so: *====================================================================* Create global lightbox component*==================================================================== Local llOk, loException As Exception m.llOk = .F. m.loException = .Null. Ease your life: Use properties instead of constants Having a closer look at the BeforeDraw() method might wet your appetite to simplify the code a little bit. Looking at the sample screenshots in Bernard's article you see several forms in different colors. This got me to modify the code like so: *====================================================================* Apply the actual lightbox effect on the captured bitmap.*====================================================================If Vartype(This.CaptureBmp) == T_OBJECT Local loGfx As xfcGraphics loGfx = This.oGfx With _Screen.System.Drawing loGfx.DrawImage(This.CaptureBmp,This.Rectangle,This.Rectangle,.GraphicsUnit.Pixel) * change the colours as needed here * possible colours are (220,128,0,0),(220,0,0,128) etc. loBrush = .SolidBrush.New(.Color.FromArgb( ; This.Opacity, .Color.FromRGB(This.BorderColor))) loGfx.FillRectangle(loBrush,This.Rectangle) EndwithEndif Create an additional property Opacity to specify the grade of translucency you would like to have without the need to change the code in each instance of the class. This way you only need to change the values of Opacity and BorderColor to tweak the appearance of your lightbox. This could be quite helpful to signalize different levels of importance (ie. green, yellow, orange, red, etc...) of notifications to the users of the application. Final thoughts Using the lightbox concept in combination with _Screen instead of forms is possible. Already Jim Wiggins comments in Bernard's article to loop through the _Screen.Forms collection in order to cascade the lightbox visibility to all active forms. Good idea. But honestly, I believe that instead of looping all forms one could use _Screen.SetAll("ShowLightbox", .T./.F., "Form") with Form.ShowLightbox_Access method to gain more speed. The modifications described above might provide even more features to your applications while consuming less resources and performance. Additionally, the restrictions to capture only forms does not exist anymore. Using _Screen you are able to capture and cover anything. The captured area of _Screen does not include any toolbars, docked windows, or menus. Therefore, it is advised to take this concept on a higher level and to combine it with additional classes that handle the state of toolbars, docked windows and menus. Which I did for the customer's project.

  Today I bought a new gaming headset (Gx-Gaming Lychas), and when I tried to record some gameplay-comentary I noticed that there always is a static background noise, I just recorded an example so you • TCP RST Reset Every 5 Minutes on Windows 2003 sp2

  Hey, Recently I had a web developer come to me and ask why he was receiving connection errors in his app that was accessing a sql database. So, I went through my normal trouble shooting steps to isolate or reproduce the issue. I discovered that if I connected to the database using Query Analyzer and let the connection idle for 5 minutes it would disconnect. Meaning... I would no longer be able to refresh my tables or any other object/node within the object browser in Query Analyzer. I would have to right click on the instance and refresh for it to re-establish the connection. Next I went to wireshark and ran a capture on the client pc's nic card. Sure enough it was receiving a TCP RST reset every 5 min if the connection idled longer than 5 min. I also ran a capture on the SQL Server and noticed the TCP RST reset command as well. Attached below is the capture from the client Machine. If someone could please assist... That would be great. -I checked all settings within SQL Server 2000 against another server and they all seem to be the same. -Issue does not occur if I connect to any other SQL server 2000 server. -Issue does not occur if connecting to SQL on the server itself... so only over the network. -I consulted with network team and this is the response back: There are no firewalls or proxies in between SQL Server and your desktop. The traffic flows like this: Desktop-Access Switch-Distro Switch-Core Switch-Datacenter Switch-SQL Server None of the switches have security ACL’s configured on them. Also they stated that NAT was not turned on. -Issue does not occur with SQL server Enterprise Manager. -Ran SQL Profiler at the same time and did not see anything out of the ordinary during the RST I HAVE SEARCHED HIGH AND LOW ON GOOGLE FOR A RESOLUTION FOR THIS ISSUE. NO LUCK! My questions are: What could be causing this? Wrong Sequence number? setting in a router or switch the network team may have over looked? Setting within Windows? I have written a custom search page that provides faster, more user friendly searches than the default Contacts view and also allows searching of Leads and Contacts simultaneously. Unfortunately it seems CRM's IIS configuration has the magic ability to capture this error before it ever gets back to my code. Using the debugger I never see it. It never gets to my catch blocks, but it's clearly happening in the SQL Data Source which is clearly (by the stack trace) being triggered by my GridView bind. Any ideas on this?   I had been using ADInsight from Sysinternals to trace Active Directory calls from my workstation, but the application has failed. Where previously the Active Directory events were traced and logged, now the window remains blank, whether the application is in capture mode or not. I have run as Administrator, rebooted, downloaded a new version; none of those actions has returned the program to a functional state. The Sysinternals forums don't offer much hope, since this tool is known to fail often. Is there tool that has similar functionality?   Hello, I'm trying to capture a rather large (100gigs) windows xp partition to a WIM file on an attached USB hard drive. Under 'Task Progress' it's saying 'Capturing Windows image Metadata', which is where it has been for a while (like 1.5 hours) - the blue bar is at the end of the screen, i.e. 100% I can move the windows around the screen so I suspect that the operation hasn't crashed yet but does this part of the process take a long time? I have only ever captured a 3gig partition before. Thanks.

  I am seeing very, very sluggish performance between my web server (which handles HTTP web services connections) and a separate server running Microsoft SQL Server 2008. I have been capturing packet traffic on the web server trying to understand why things are running so slowly. I am using Wireshark to capture the packet traffic. The apparent problem is that the web server is sending TDS packets to the data server--each packet followed by a response from the data server with Response Packet [Malformed Packet] in the Info field. The packet sent from the web server appears to have an invalid checksum. Has anyone seen this type of problem before? Any ideas?

  Is it possible to create another audio device and redirect only wanted input streams to it? Here's my concrete problem: I am broadcasting a game via XFire and it uses the Windows audio device to capture any audio I receive. As I am broadcasting, other users who watch the video stream are communicating with me over Skype, and they hear themselves back within the video stream and it is entirely logical since I am broadcasting the audio I hear. What I want to do is create another audio device within Windows and redirect (pipe) ONLY the audio input from that game and not the input reveived from Skype. I would then tell XFire to use that newly created "virtual" audio device to broadcast and therefore my partners won't hear themselves back. Is there any software that can do that or can it be achieved natively with Windows? (I am under Windows 7).

• How to fix "Xlib: extension "RECORD" missing on display :1" in vnc session?

  I am running a JNativeHook capture program on Ubuntu. When I run the session on default X session things are working fine. However when I run the same program from vnc session, it fails with "Xlib: extension "RECORD" missing on display". I checked that this extension is loaded in X which is started by display manager/init. However I am not sure if indeed is initialized during vncserver startup. I could not see anything related in the vnc log. I tried create custom xorg.conf with Module section, which explicitly loads RECORD extension as suggested by many posts but did not help. My environment: Xorg-server: 2.1.12.4-6 tightvncserver: 1.3.9 The same thing works fine on my CentOS 6.4 setup.

  Hi I would like to have a http POST request method CAPTURE filter I know it is easy to do it by display filter http.request.method==POST but I need tcpdump compatible I wrote tcp dst port 80 and (tcp[13] = 0x18) But it is not perfect... tcp dst port 80 and (tcp[((tcp[12:1] & 0xf0) 2):4] = 0x504f5354) works better, but... packages are not treated as a http packages, so I can not do my further display filters... and is there any way to not display frame, tcp, ip and http header information, only data-text-lines field value (content of POST)? or same thing in tcpdump, only dumping of POSTed html form content?

• SQL 2008 Database tuning advisor won’t start

  For some reason I can't get DTA to connect to my development machine. It connects to a remote DB just fine but when I point it to my dev machine I get an error saying: Failed to initialize MSDB database for tuning (exit code: -1073741819). I'm pretty sure it's not a permissions issue since I've used profiler to capture what it's doing and all of the commands it's run so far look fine and are being run under my account which is associated with the sysadmin role, when I run them in sql management studio they go through fine. I'm pretty convinced that the problem is related to creating the objects in MSDB that are used by DTA but I tried creating these manually (I found scripts on the web) and it just seems to push the problem along the line slightly. I'm going out of my mind - have even tried reinstalling SQL but that's not fixed it. I'm using SQL 2008 with SP1 (10.0.2531) on windows server 2008 (patched up to date). SAVE ME!!!!!

• Logging a Daemon's Output with Upstart

  I have a custom daemon that is managed by upstart on my Ubuntu server. It works perfectly except that I need to capture (log) the daemon's output. The official stanzas page says that I can use console logged to do this, but what file does it log to? I've also read that console logged is no longer a valid stanza. I'm currently using 0.3.9 (Hardy) but will upgrade to 0.6.x (Lucid) in a few months. If console logged in fact won't work with later versions, what do I use instead?

• Canon LiDE 600F FAU on Snow Leopard?

  Hello, I have been able to use my Canon LiDE 600F scanner under Snow Leopard to scan paper sheet, after installing Canon's latest driver software. However, I cannot find a way to make the FAU (Film Adaptor Unit) to work: Canon's software want to calibrate it first and gives an error message "Calibration cannot be performed. Pull out the film. 182.0.0". (of course there is no film). Hamrick's VueScan doesn't seem to support the FAU Apple's Image Capture doesn't propose a film option either Did I miss something? Did somebody manage to scan film (positive or negative) using the LiDE 600F under Snow Leopard? Many thanks

• Windows performance monitor new instances

  Hi all, I am trying to configure performance monitor on 2003/2008R1&R2 to capture new instances of the counters without any luck. For example if I select counter Process\%Processor time (to monitor processor time per any instances of the process) everything works fine until I open or close any application. If in the meanwhile new application is open it will not be included in the monitoring processor, and old application instance will display zero for % processor time. The problem is performance monitor is not refreshing instances of the new applications/users/new terminal session/ or any other metrics that changes instances in the meanwhile. The solution is to stop/start log file, but I don't want to do that every sec and the logging will be split into two files. Anybody knows how do I accomplish to add all new instances? Any help greatly appreciated

I'm particularly interested in the following features: Open pcap files for editing and injecting into arbitrary network Change source and destination addresses/ports of UDP packets Change packet timing (with millisecond resolution) Edit packet contents, including modifying its length Has graphical front end for Windows or Linux (or Mac OS X) I've scanned a couple lists of potential tools (here and here), but nothing really fits my requirements. The closest tool might be Ostinato (http://code.google.com/p/ostinato/), but it doesn't appear to open packet capture files. Thanks for any help!

• Preserving URLs after CMS migration with redirect database and apache http?

  We will migrate an entire intranet from one CMS to another. All URLs will change in a non-predictable pattern, but I can capture a file with original,new URLs I can feed into anything. I have hundred thousands of URLs, not just a few hundred. What I would like to do: every URL that is not found (404) should be checked against the database and if a new URL found a 301/308 issued instead. Some trickery to suggest similar pages in the 404 message if the lookup was unsuccessful would be an added bonus. Is that the right approach or should I check redirection first all the time? How would I do that in Apache2? Is that a custom 404 module?

• Are there any tools for monitoring individual Apache virtual hosts in real-time?

  I'm looking for a way to monitor and record Apache traffic, separated by virtual host. I am currently using Munin to capture this and other data for the entire server however I can't seem to find a way to do this by vhost. This link describes using a module called mod_watch which is apparently no longer in development: http://www.freshnet.org/wordpress/2007/03/08/monitoring-apaches-virtualhost-with-munin/ The file that is listed as being compatible with Apache 2.x is reported to have problems with missing vhosts an reporting data correctly. Does anyone know of a reliable way to determine real-time traffic per vhost? If I can find this it should be easy enough to write a new Munin plugin. Edit: What I'd really like to see is something similar to the Apache server-status scoreboard page with the number of connections / requests separated by virtual host. This would give me the ability to check which vhost may be experiencing a spike in traffic in real time and would also provide the data needed for a Munin module (or some alternative performance monitoring / analysis system.)
